Abit mobo's en Coppermine support

Door Femme Taken, 15 december 1999 20:1813 reacties, bron: Overclockers' Wordbench

Overclockers' Workbench heeft wat info over Coppermine support in Abit mobo's bijeen gemaaid. Zo te lezen hebben BH6 1.0x, BX6 1.0x, ZM6, BM6, WX6 Rev 1.0 en BP6 gebruikers pech gehad:

Q: Do the BH6 Rev. 1.00, 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, etc. and up (BUT NOT 1.1 and above) boards and the BX6 Rev 1.00, 1.01, 1.02, etc. (BUT NOT BX6 Rev 2.0) boards support Coppermine CPUs?

A: No, the BH6 Rev. 1.00, 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, etc. and up (BUT NOT 1.1 and above) boards and the BX6 Rev 1.00, 1.01, 1.02, etc. (BUT NOT BX6 Rev 2.0) do not support Coppermine CPUs due to the native design of power for the CPU core voltage probably not being sufficient. So to avoid instability, we advise that the afore mentioned boards do not support Coppermine CPUs.

The BH6 1.1 boards can support the Coppermine CPUs but only with a 100MHz FSB

Q: Do the ZM6, BM6, WX6 Rev. 1.0 and BP6 boards support Coppermine CPUs?

A: Because the VTT and Reset signals of Coppermines are different from the current Socket 370 CPUs, the ZM6, BM6, WX6 Rev. 1.0 and BP6 boards will not support Coppermine CPUs.

Q: Does the BP6 support Coppermine CPUs?

A: No, not even in single mode as the circuitry for the dual configuration for Celerons of Socket 370 has used up extra pin outs that are needed by Coppermine.

Netscape Mail security bug ontdekt

A software-security firm warned that its researchers have found a potentially serious security flaw in the e-mail system used by Netscape's Web browser.

Reliable Software Technologies, a Sterling, Va., software-security company, said Tuesday that two RST engineers needed just eight hours to duplicate the mathematical algorithm Netscape Mail uses to scramble users' passwords. The company said the problem affects all current versions of Netscape.

Gary McGraw, vice president for corporate technology at RST, said the Netscape algorithm was "not an obvious sitting duck -- [the password] appears to be scrambled up in a good way, but it's not cryptographically strong." That would allow a determined hacker to reverse-engineer the algorithm and figure out the password.

According to RST, the engineers who found the security hole came upon it inadvertently. They were writing a program "to look for badly protected key material, like passwords," says Dr. McGraw, adding that to test the program's validity, they ran it against Netscape's e-mail system because it's a highly popular software system that millions of people use.

PIII-800 pas leverbaar in februari?

Door Femme Taken, 15 december 1999 20:0017 reacties, bron: The Register

Chip giant Intel will provide samples of 800MHz Pentium IIIs to its OEMs at the beginning of next week and will also announce several flavours of other of its desktop processors.

[...] Providing samples to its OEMs -- the major PC manufacturers -- is not the same as supplying the chip in volume. The experience of people attempting to buy a 733MHz Coppermine Pentium III since October 25 bears witness to that. PC vendors will take time to evaluate the processors before they can build the 800MHz chip into their machines.

[...] The 750MHz parts, however, will start to appear rather sooner than the 800MHz. We can expect to see 800MHz chips in machines round about February or March, in line with Intel's revised roadmap.

[...] Once more it appears that Intel has decided to take the marchitecture rather than the architecture route, possibly panicked into such action by AMD's success with the 750MHz Athlon which is available in large volumes.

Bleem! makers openen rechtszaak tegen Sony

Los Angeles-based Bleem claims Sony has unlawfully acquired, maintained, and extended its monopoly in the video game market through a combination of anti-competitive practices, including misuse of copyright, patents and other intellectual property. Bleem further asserts that the current lawsuit exemplifies these practices and is a "sham," brought in bad faith.

Further claims against Sony include combination or conspiracy in restraint of trade, intentional interference with contractual relations, defamation, and unfair competition with regard to Sony's well-publicized efforts to force show management to remove Bleem's booth from the E3 trade event last May.

Athlon originally had capacity for 72 in-flight instructions in the reorder buffer. This was bumped to 78 instructions in a recent version of the silicon since it was determined to be a bottleneck for performance. As a result, the current silicon can reorder a few more instructions than the original.

Intel OR840 mobo review

Overall, this board is very stable, and the whole system is pretty quick. Features such as 4 RDRAM slots, 6 fan connectors, built-in 10/100 NIC make this board a winner. Unfortunately, for most of us, the real qualities of this board only start to shine in heavily multithreaded multitasking applications. In the gaming environment, money is better spent elsewhere. I was disappointed in the overall gaming performance; I didn't notice too much speed difference from my personal machine (Celeron @ 567). I'm waiting for some serious next-level goods before I consider a major upgrade, and this machine doesn't meet that need. The higher FSB is very nice, and the additional RAM bandwidth is probably the biggest feature of this board.

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 review

Subjective heat and noise results for the Plus 40 are nothing less than enviable. The drive, both at idle and when seeking seems every bit as quiet as the DiamondMax 40, a drive we found to be commendably unobtrusive. The heat generated by the Plus 40 shows that 7200rpm drives have truly come of age as a mainstream product: barely warm to the touch after extended use, the drive's need for active cooling is nil.

If we seem a bit high on the DiamondMax Plus 40, well, we are! The drive combines unprecedented ATA performance, massive capacity, impressively low levels of heat and noise, and an affordable price. Combine this with the fact that none of the competition has even announced a similar product and you have a sure-fire winner for users looking to purchase anything above the cheapest of entry-level drives.

With this review, we're going to debut the StorageReview.com "Safe Buy" award. The fact is that many products from various manufacturers manage to raise the bar or at very least match the performance expected from the product's class at any given point in time. Though its not intended to be an exclusive award (that distinction remains with the Editor's Choice award; the DiamondMax Plus 40 is the leading candidate for our next one), we nonetheless feel that the Plus 40 is truly at the very least a "Safe Buy." Congratulations, Maxtor!

Rambus yields slechts 50%

Door Tweakers , 15 december 1999 18:386 reacties, bron: The Register

What a nice chap John Tu, one of the co-founders of Kingston Technology is. He wasn't at our breakfast meeting with the company this morning, but a prepared statement on the Rambus fiasco was.

In the statement, Tu says the following: "The new technology today is Rambus and the yield is only in the 50 per cent range. If current production lines are converted from today's technology to Rambus, and the yields on Rambus are not up to expectations, this is an overall reduction of current production. Overall volume is compromised during this transition period."

Very interesting. And so how is the availability for Rambus RIMMs getting on? According to two executives at Kingston, realistically we cannot expect to see too many RIMMs on the market until the beginning of next year.

Kingston also confirmed a story we wrote some days back confirming that unless you use the same type of RIMM in an 820 mobo, you may run into the sort of timing problems that made everyone decide to just use two RIMM sockets.

Quake 3 Arena gearriveerd in NL

Diamond Viper II Z200 review

Door Tweakers , 15 december 1999 18:180 reacties, bron: Savage World

So, how does the card measure up? Because of the limited speed of my CPU, it is difficult to give a good impression of the raw speed of the card. But, I wasn't disappointed with the performance in Q3A. Direct3D performance was not so good, however.

As for the delivery of promised features, full-scene antialiasing and anisotropic filtering are missing. In my opinion, those features aren't that important, so I won't miss them. More serious of course is the lack of T&L in the drivers. On my system, T&L could have made a big difference, because it would have handled the work the CPU has to do. As already said, OpenGL T&L support should be available in the near future, while the future of DirectX support for T&L isn't really clear

It's good to see that the drivers are really progressing. The recently released 9.01.09 DX6 drivers seem to have fixed many issues with 3D Winbench2000, and includes many promised features that weren't present in the retail drivers. The DX7 drivers still need some work, and my guess is that they therefore aren't available yet.

To mention what has become the S3 cliché, the card shows a lot of potential, but it needs some driver work to bring out that potential. In comparison with other cards, the Savage2000 seems to be situated between the TNT2 and GeForce.

Q3A CD-Key horror stories 12:50 AM (your time) Ben "PSX" Hamilton (52) Robert Colon fired over an e-mail to state that you should be checking your Q3 boxes for tampering in the event that someone opened the box and ganked your cd key before you bought it. Here is what he wrote: At my job people have been opening boxes of Quake 3 and tearing the CD Key sticker off of the back of the cases and then resealing the box tape. I think you should bring this to the attention of your readers to check their box seal for tampering because many stores have a no return once opened policy on software. This of course looks perfectly legal to ID's authentication servers since it isn't a cracked # but a legit one off of one of their CDs. This really hampers the fine individual that bought their game but has no CD key. I think this method of protection is one of the worst I have ever seen. Any kind of protection that hurts the customer is just wrong. Since no protection is 100% they should concentrate more on DETERRING would be pirates (even a small number of the jag-offs) and hurting 0% of the honest customers rather than hurting even just a few honest customers to stop many pirates. They try too hard to be 100% secure and hurt honest customers when there is no 100% secure no matter what. He brings up an interesting concept. So if you are planning on getting Q3 for christmas this year be sure to check the box, and return any boxes that have been tampered with.

Supersnelheden via lichtnet?

Door Rick Jansen, 15 december 1999 15:3671 reacties, bron: CNet

Georgio schrijft: "Who needs ASDL?:

Dallas-based start-up Media Fusion has won a U.S. patent on a process it says can send data, video and voice over electric wires at speeds thousands of times faster than current high-speed Internet access technologies. Employing this system, a user could plug a computer or TV directly into an electrical grid through certain hardware technology to connect to the Internet at super-high speeds, the company claims. Bla Bla Bla even while keeping most details closely under wraps.

All in all, not a bad group of coolers. Even with their smaller size heatsinks and fans, the Cooler Master units stood the ground with the rest of them. I would also like to mention not a single one of these units made me change my OC'd settings of 567mhz. That is a great plus, as like some of you I hate to have to run slower than I know is possible. While this shows size does matter, we also see that it makes a big difference with effective case cooling. I beleive that in a bare stock case things would have been hotter of course and possibly a little more gap in the temps. GlobalWin's big badass FDP32 stole the contest coming in a "cool" 4 deg. Celcius below the hottest temp. For the money they are all a good deal, and I would use any one of them in a box without question. Again, I would like to say thanks to both companies for sending the demo units, check out their sites and gear. There is sure to be something at each you can use. Take it easy, and happy cooling to all.

Thrustmaster Nascar Charger Racing Wheel review

I found the Nascar Charger to be an excellent wheel/pedal bundle. It doesn't support the latest techologies, but it does offer extremely precise racing at a fraction of what some of the newer wheels cost. The wheel unit doesn't take up more than a square foot of desktop space, and looks pretty slick. The buttons are all conveniently placed and are not hard to find, no matter how fast you're racing. The only thing holding this product back from an FPS 3D Pure Power Product Award is the lack of features. The competition supports force feedback and USB, but the Charger does not. I still recommend this wheel to any racer, enthusiast or not. It is a simple, cost effective wheel that does the same great job as the more expensive ones, just without the latest features.

Choosing the right PC

When I somehow manage to grace a retail computer superstore, I listen. Most conversations near the system aisle tell me that the vast majority of buyers don’t have a clue as to what to plunk down their hard-earned cash on. Should I get this brand or that brand? What size monitor is big enough? Why do I see $300 video cards when entire systems cost less than that? Rarely do I ever recommend a store bought system when you can indeed have just what you need…or want. Just like those other twelve step programs, here is a computer buying twelve stepper.

3dfx Voodoo3 3500-TV review

What have 3dfx done with the Voodoo3 3500-TV? Well, they have created a very fast graphics card suited for hardcore gamers and added video features to it. It is important to keep in mind that 3dfx have always targetted gamers and will surely continue to do so. But with the 3500-TV they offered gamers the ability to view and capture video. Where the Marvel G400-TV succeeds in video capture and editing the 3500-TV succeeds in gaming performance. We were surprised over the good quality of the TV-output but was at the same time put down by the poor quality if the video input and the fact that video capture isn't accelerated in hardware will also make usability go down. With the release of nVIDIA's high-performing GeForce 256 for gaming and Matrox's new TurboGL (for all CPUs) one wonder where the 3500-TV stands. It does offer decent performance although lower than the GeForce 256 and it does offer ok video features although inferior to those found in the Marvel G400-TV.

If gaming is your thing and you need a new graphics card right now to keep you satisfied until the next wave of products then I recommend you getting a cheaper card such as the Voodoo3 3000. There's also always the choice of overclocking the Voodoo3 3000 to 3500 speeds (not uncommon) and you will get the same level of performance.

If video is what you live for and you want a good solution for your PC then stay away from the 3500-TV and look at other solutions such as the Matrox Marvel G400-TV or more professional systems offered by Pinnacle Systems (DV10 etc).

We like the concept behind the 3500-TV but feel that it is "too little, too late".

Consumentenbond bereidt offensief tegen Superweb

With Q3Test1 available on the Internet and being lauded by gamers around the world, the pressure was on for id to capitalize on the excitement and release the game. "It was definitely a tough situation with the bots," elucidates Devine. "We knew that if we didn't bring in someone to help us, there was no way this game was going to ship before 2000."

That someone was Jan-Paul Waveren, a 22-year-old student from the Netherlands, who, between studying for classes and playing Quake, managed to create the Gladiator bot add-on for Quake II. One day this past summer, Waveren received SOS e-mail from id. "Graeme e-mailed me and said, 'Would you be interested in coming over for a week to talk to us?'" explains Waveren, sounding a little shell-shocked by the fact that he now has an office at id Software and is considered part of the team. Before he knew it, he was on a plane to Dallas to meet id.

Upon arriving at id, Waveren worked with programmer John Cash to bring the bots to life, a task that both programmers admit is an evolving science. "The hardest thing with the bots," explains Cash, "is developing the technology so they don't have perfect aim." Since the bots are technically part of the game, they could constantly point the rail gun at you and hit spot-on, no questions asked. "But we want to make the bots seem human," explains Cash, "and therefore we need to make them miss convincingly."

Balance was another key issue, and Waveren developed 50 different characteristics for the bots, including aim accuracy for each weapon, favorite weapon, aggression, and jump height. As a result, bots have developed personalities and character traits; for example, you'll want to get out of the way when the Grunt has the rail gun in his arsenal.

If there is one aspect of the bot code that Waveren is particularly proud of implementing into the game, it's his 3D area system. "A lot of our competitors use a waypoint system where you actually have to hand-place spots the bots can touch on the map," he explains in his European accent. "Well, if you play the game enough times, you get a feeling where the bots are likely to appear." Hence, Waveren developed an area system that actually takes a 3D representation of the entire arena and gives the data to the bot, eliminating the need for waypoints. "This way," he says with his finger pointing in the air as if to add emphasis, "the bots have no preordained path. They are just like human players, and they can go anywhere on the map."

Waveren's innovation didn't stop with his area system. In a feature that id did not reveal before the game shipped, Waveren also implemented the ability for you to actually chat and command fellow bots in teamplay modes, such as capture the flag. Pulling up the game on his computer to illustrate this new feature, Waveren spawns two bots and types in, "I am the team leader." Automatically, the bots recognize him as the leader. If you really want to get an edge on the competition, Waveren offers an important tip: "It's usually a good idea to make the bot your team leader and then just follow his commands!"

Quake III was shaping up to be the game that id had envisioned - but not without some expert help. All told, everyone inside of id admits that Waveren's involvement was key to putting the single-player project back on track. "It was really uncomfortable for me towards the end," admits Carmack, "because I'd been idling for a while, waiting for the bots to work." Although he says he considered just doing the bots himself, and "had a tough time holding back," Carmack is incredibly happy with the results. "In a lot of ways, Jan really saved us," says Carmack, in a tip of the hat to a fellow programmer. "Without Jan, we would have been at risk of missing Christmas."

Good job Jan-Paul!!

I think you see the characteristic difference between 3dfx's approach of accelerating the past, versus NVIDIA's approach of accelerating the past AND providing a platform for the future in this answer. Up until recently, the processor has not had a problem pushing triangles to the screen. So if you spend your time focusing on the past, on yesterday's titles, you would surely come to the conclusion that T&L wasn't needed.

Thankfully, NVIDIA's designers saw the need for T&L before it became a huge problem. One reason for this difference of vision is schedule. The VSA 100 was supposed to be a product some time ago, like last July (note it has TNT2 Ultra like performance in a single chip configuration: 166MHz, 333MegaTexels). In the time frame when they originally planned to launch it, T&L was not so critical.

For those of us who have seen the titles in the pipeline with T&L support, there is no second guessing. There is no waffling on its importance. If you buy a card with T&L support now, you get a great fill rate for the legacy apps, and you get great protection for the future apps. How long are you going to own your video card? 6 months, 1 year, 18 months? If you buy T&L today, you have the peace of mind that you have bought the fastest card you can own today, and you have the security that as more and more T&L titles ship, your experience won't suffer because your processor can't keep up. If you wait 6 months to buy a card that doesn't support T&L, you actually are in a bigger danger of the card being outdated by new content. Now wouldn't that frost you?

Intel Corp. has pulled the plug on a project , code-named Greendale, to develop a chipset to support a mobile version of Direct Rambus DRAM, according to industry sources.

An Intel spokesman, when asked about the veracity of this report, reiterated the company's policy of not commenting on unannounced programs in development. He said Intel still expects to see a mobile Direct Rambus chip come to market in 2000 or 2001, and added that the company will support all customer needs for mobile Direct Rambus DRAM.

Rambus Inc., the Mountain View, Calif.-based designer of the chip, said Direct Rambus DRAM is uniquely suited for mobile applications because of its several power-saving modes, including standby and nap.

#Auditorium.Room01 -> how about Doom 2000 and Wolfenstein 3D updated any hints?

A version of Wolfenstein using the Quake 3 engine is currently in development.

Awesome news.

...but not by id Software, under the DIRECTION of id Software.
