Toch is de strijd nog niet gestreden. In de nu gestarte tweede ronde zijn alleen de eerste tien personen overgebleven en zijn de stemmen weer op 0 gezet. Er zal dus weer opnieuw gekozen moeten worden.

Electic Tech heeft een persbericht van Soyo klaarstaan waarin Soyo vertelt dat zij lucht hebben gekregen van 'fake' moederborden. Tot nu toe zijn deze moederborden, die verkocht worden onder de naam 'Soyo' maar geen officieel serienummer hebben, aangetroffen in Noord- en Zuid-Amerika, Canada en Azië. De moederborden worden voor lagere prijzen verkocht, maar zijn qua verpakking en handleiding niet van de originelen te onderscheiden. Soyo heeft aangekondigd acties te gaan ondernemen tegen de fabrikanten van de neppe moederborden:

SOYO Computer Inc. today advised its distributors, dealers and customers that fake SOYO motherboards are circulating through unauthorized channels. The company also issued a stern warning to anyone manufacturing imitation SOYO motherboards. SOYO has hired a legal investigation team, and will prosecute anyone who manufactures or knowingly sells fake SOYO product.

[...]SOYO is gathering evidence, and after it has finished its investigation, promises legal action against the fake manufacturers.

Tot nu toe zijn fakes gevonden van de volgende moederborden: SY-6VBA133, SY-5EHM/5 en SY-5SSM/5.

Bij Shugashack is wat informatie te vinden over de 3dfx Rampage. De informatie is gelekt van de 3dfx site waar de webmaster de grote fout maakte om de onderstaande termen op te nemen in hun Technology Glossary. We kunnen er dus van uit gaan dat de info correct is .

In de gelekte glossary komen we de termen M-Buffer, recursive textures en 52-bit color tegen. De M-Buffer lijkt een nieuwe smaak T-Buffer te zijn, maar dan een die effecten per pixel toe kan passen. Wat recursive textures zijn is me niet compleet duidelijk, maar het lijkt op iets waarmee je per pixel effecten kan bouwen op textures door middel van andere textures.

En last but not least vinden we 52-bit kleuren in het lijstje met termen terug. Deze feature is niet zoals je op het eerste gezicht zou denken compleet nutteloos, maar zelfs extreem handig als er gebruik wordt gemaakt van multi-texturing. Het is namelijk zo dat er bij elke extra texture laag het eindresultaat onnauwkeuriger wordt en dus een precisie krijgt die (veel) lager ligt dan 32-bit. Dat is natuurlijk niet wenselijk en dus gaan de nieuwe 3dfx chips intern op 52-bit werken :

- M-Buffer™ : "M" stands for multi-sample. ... in the multi-sampling method, used by Spectre, only one texture lookup per *pixel* (so that all subsamples use the same texture lookup value) is required. ...it reduces the amount of texture lookup by a factor of 4 compared to the VSA-100 method...
- Recursive textures : Texturing flexibility by supporting N (8 for Spectre) independent, unique textures applied per pixel in a single rendering pass... Also reflection on water.
- Overbright (52-bit color) : Increased internal precision of 52-bits (signed 13-bits per RGBA color component), generating rendered images of substantially higher quality. The higher dynamic range reduces darkening resulting in more vibrant and realistic images.

HardOCP heeft een review on line gezet van de Visiontek GeForce2 Ultra. Visiontek is een nieuwkomer op de retailmarkt voor videokaarten; voorheen maakte Visiontek alleen OEM-producten, maar nu willen ze ook wel eens in de spotlights staan. We zullen in de toekomst dus nog wel meer van deze fabrikant horen. Deze GeForce2 Ultra heeft 64MB DDR-RAM en is bijna gelijk aan nVidia's reference design. De Visiontek GeForce2 Ultra is geklokt op 250MHz core/458MHz memory. Overklokken lukte tot 318/515MHz, maar redelijk stabiel was het geheel bij 290/490MHz.

Well, there is not much to say except the Visiontek GeForce2 Ultra is one badass mofo. ( I want to see that quoted on their website!! ) Seriously though, this card is without a doubt the best card for the aggressive gamer that can be bought today. That is just all there is to it. It is the best. High rez, low rez, medium rez, it does it all. Couple that with Flat Panel support and digital video in and out features and I really don't know what else you could want in a Vid Card besides dual heads.

As we mentioned before though, who needs it? Really gamers only, and then it might be more than anyone needs. I would certainly love to wake up on Christmas morning and find one of these Visiontek cards stuffed in my stocking. While it hefts a big price in the neighborhood of US$400, it will give you braggin' rights and smooth gameplay for some time to come.

As fast as the products cycles happen nowadays (for NVIDIA at least), it is certain that the GeForce2 Ultra will not be the fastest card around here soon. If you are looking for an upgrade card from something equal or prior to a TNT2 or Voodoo3, I say go for it. You will be pleasantly surprised in the difference. If you currently have a Voodoo5, GeForce or GeForce2 card you might want to wait for the NEXT round of cards to come out. Not necessarily that you want to put down the money to buy one, but the next big thing will certainly erode the price of the GeForce2 Ultra to a more reasonable level.

Nadat eerder NEC al notebooks moest terug roepen vanwege productiefouten in de Transmeta Crusoe CPU, kunnen we nu bij The Register lezen dat ook Sony Viao notebooks mogelijk problemen hebben. Volgens Sony is het mogelijk dat bij zo'n 13.000 notebooks met de Crusoe TM5600 600MHz chip door productiefouten de L2-cache niet goed funtioneert.

However, unlike NEC, whose recall of Crusoe-powered PCs alerted buyers to potential problems with Transmeta's chip, Sony said it will not recall its own computers. Users who suspect their machines contain the defect should contact Sony, the company said, who will test the chip and replace it if necessary.

After NEC admitted yesterday it would recall 284 Crusoe-based notebooks (all with serial numbers 'OY*****1A'), Transmeta said that there was "no clear evidence" that the problem affected other Crusoe customers.

In addition to Sony and NEC, Hitachi and Fujitsu are both putting the finishing touches to Crusoe-based machines. Hitachi said it is testing its systems for signs of the bug. Fujitsu said its tests showed neither of its two machines was affected. One model uses the TM5400 processor, the other the TM5600, but running at 533MHz not the problematic 600MHz. One of Hitachi's models does contain a 600MHz TM5600 - hence the company's concern.

Deze keer niet veel flushes van subteams, waardoor we helaas niet het miljoen meer dan TA gehaald hebben... Dat moet natuurlijk wel een dagelijkse gewoonte worden, dus assimileren iedereen!

Op WebWereld valt te lezen dat Linus Torvalds bezig is met een autobiografie. Het boek getiteld 'Just for fun, the story of an accidental revolutionary' moet in mei 2001 op de markt komen. Het boek zal natuurlijk gaan over het leven van Linus, maar ook over zijn bedrijfsfilosofie en het OS linux:

Het werk behandelt het leven van de Fin, zijn technisch inzicht en bedrijfsfilosofie en natuurlijk de groei van het door hem ontworpen revolutionaire open-source besturingssysteem Linux.

Torvalds ontwierp Linux bijna tien jaar geleden als goedkoop alternatief voor zakelijke softwareprogramma's. Momenteel wordt het besturingssysteem gebruikt door ongeveer twaalf miljoen mensen. Het OS neemt het tegenwoordig op tegen commerciële systemen zoals Windows en Unix.

X-Bit Labs heeft wat informatie over Iwill's DVD266-R moederbord. Dit is een dual Socket370 plankje gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset en dus heeft ondersteuning voor maximaal 4GB DDR RAM. Met AGP4x, 5x PCI, ACR, ATA-100, een extra RAID controller, onboard sound en naar eigen zeggen veel overklokmogelijkheden is dit bord niet alleen interessant voor entry-level servers, maar ook voor ons tweakers:

Overclockers Australia heeft een review geschreven over de PC-10 kast van Lian-Li. Deze kast bestaat voor een groot deel uit aluminium, wat hem erg licht (en duur) maakt. Handige features van het bord zijn de moederbordtray en de drie 80mm fans die er standaard inzitten. Verder krijg je voor $315 4 5.25" bays en 6 3.5" bays, waarvan 3 extern. Een PSU zul je er zelf echter bij moeten kopen:

Earlier on, I mentioned the 3-way sliding switch for controlling the speed of the 2 front 80mm ADDA fans. There is a definite difference in noise levels between the three settings, and a noticeable (using the highly accurate place-the-hand-in-the-airflow test) difference in airflow. However, I didn't notice any measurable difference in temperature inside the case, using the A7V's on-board sensor, or a thermometer I placed inside the case to get a case temperature reading. My system did, however, remain cool - at idle with my 650MHz Duron running at 850MHz, the system/case temperature was 27ºC, and 28ºC under full load, compared with 30ºC and 32ºC in my KF-45A case with a 120mm intake fan.



With the panels all on, and the PC running, this case is fairly quiet. It's hard to be objective here - I don't have a Decibel Meter to accurately measure the sound output, but considering this case has three 80mm fans, I think it's not too bad. When the intake fans are running at low speed, it's about on par with my KF-45A, with its quiet 120mm intake fan.

De kast is op een paar kleine puntjes na zeer makkelijk in gebruik en het koelsysteem bleek ook effectief te zijn. Een goed alternatief voor de Coolermaster kasten dus.

Bij Digit-Life is een review verschenen over de Asus V7700 Ultra. Deze kaart is uitgerust met een GeForce2 Ultra chip lopend op 250MHz en 64MB aan DDR geheugen lopend op 230MHz. Asus heeft bij deze kaart geen speciale features geplant zoals ze bij hun DeLuxe kaarten doen. Daarom is er eigenlijk erg weinig wat deze kaart onderscheid van de grijze massa en dus zijn er eigenlijk weinig redenen om hem te verkiezen boven bijvoorbeeld een GeForce2 Ultra van Creative. Niettemin is het een prima kaart en als je ca. 450 dollar over hebt voor mooie framerates dan is er eigenlijk geen reden om hem niet te kopen :

NVIDIA has released the most powerful graphics accelerator with a huge number of advantages. ASUSTeK company was first to release a video card on this chip which entirely corresponds to High-End class in the segment of game videocards. Undoubtedly, the working speed of this card in 3D is fabulous when working with modern games. If you are not a budget-conscious man, you can get it at $450.

Isn't it overprice for this 3D accelerator? You understand that GeForce2 Ultra based cards are not intended for the mass market, so the price is appropriate (besides, there is no any other competitors). Furthermore, there is some shortage of memory that works at 250 MHz. NVIDIA itself positions GeForce2 Ultra as High-End solution, so it's not affordable for the majority. Otherwise, NVIDIA offers the products within different price ranges, and you can choose not so expensive cards based on Pro, GTS or MX.

Today I advise to buy GeForce2 Ultra based cards only for those who can afford it really. Otherwise, get the boards on GeForce2 Pro, or at least wait until the New Year, when the prices should fall at least to $300.
