The Register bericht dat zij van 'Japanse bronnen dicht bij Intel' gehoord hebben dat er wel eens heel weinig verschil zou kunnen zitten tussen de P4 en de Foster, de serverversie van de P4. Naast het feit dat de chipset voor de Foster (i870) ook DDR SDRAM ondersteunt, is het enige noembare verschil tussen de processoren zelf dat de Foster 4-way SMP ondersteunt. Dit betekent dat de Foster met 256k cache (Fosters met meer cache zijn veel later beschikbaar dan de introductie begin 2001), die waarschijnlijk veel meer gaat kosten dan een gelijkwaardige P4, alleen 4-way SMP biedt, een techniek die ook in de P4 core verwerkt zit, maar gewoon niet 'aanstaat'.

Gure3D heeft een paar Quake III en 3DMark2000 benchmarks gedraaid op de vrijdag uitgelekte Detonator 6.26 beta drivers van nVidia. In vergelijking met de 6.18 drivers blijken de nieuwe drivers in de meeste gevallen net een procentje sneller te zijn. De resultaten zijn niet bijzonder opwindend, maar het is toch leuk om te zien dat oude hardware sneller wordt met nieuwe drivers. De 6.26 drivers blijken bovendien behoorlijk stabiel te zijn:

Friday the 14th of August there was another Detonator drivers leak. This time with build 6.26 I decided to download and install them and Quite frankly I was impressed, the previous 6.18 drivers had shown a serious increase of performance. The new 6.26 promise a lot. Again there is a small increase in performance, not a lot .. but still noticeable.

[...] Stability - the previous 6.18 drivers had major bugs in the property-code. A lot of bugs have been reported to me about the fact the someone entered the display properties followed by a small software crash. This problem seems to be solved. Also the fast writes issue should be solved in this driver release. (Not confirmed though). In the previous drivers the Detonator drivers saw KX133 and KT133 chipsets as the same ID while data exchange was totally different, that's why so many problems have been reported with the new kt133 chipset. This should be fixed.

Dutch Power Cows is vandaag 1e en heeft een kans van één op 20 om de sleutel te vinden!

Kyle van HardOCP heeft een prototype in handen gekregen van de AAGK-1 koeler van Millennium ThermalSolutions en die eens op de pijnbank gelegd. De koeler ziet eruit alsof er goed over na is gedacht met koelribben in horizontale en verticale richting. De prestaties vallen nog een klein beetje tegen, maar dat kan natuurlijk nog veranderen aangezien dit een prototype is. Ook als de prestaties niet verbeteren koelt ie nog steeds aardig goed voor slechts 30 dollar:

This is the cooler that the review was based on so I saved it for last. To be a newbie entry in the HSF field we were happy to see the Mill Cooler do so well. At 104ºF, it is certainly not the coolest, but it is FAR away from being a bad performer. There is no doubt that a lot of engineering went into this cooler. I have a little reservation about the size of the cooler. Most mainboard manufacturers are now trying to take capacitor placement into consideration but it is still possible with a cooler that extends out over the edge of the socket that you could run into problems. Having a 7000 RPM fan on it does make the cooler a bit loud, but if performance is what you want this may be the cooler to keep your eye on. When we first discussed the cooler with the manufacturer we really expected better performance. Millennium ThermalSolutions tells us that we should have seen a temp more in the 94ºF range. I used multiple thermal pastes and reattached the cooler many times and got the same results.

[...] Giving Millennium the benefit of the doubt is not a problem. From talking to them, there is no question that they are very familiar with the laws of thermodynamics. However, the real world does not operate in a vacuum either. If their cooler will do what they say it will, then it will be one hella unit to have. Still even if it "only" performs as well as it did for us, it is still one of the best coolers produced. Next lies the big question of whether or not you can buy one. It seems as though this cooler will be ready to distribute sometime very soon, say within 60 days or so. At that point from what I was told there will be many of them in the market. The laws of supply and demand coupled with a decent wholesale price should leave this unit around the US$30 level. If all this works out and you can pick it up easily at the pricing we expect, it will be a great deal for OCers.

Bij Envy News is een review verschenen van de optische Logitech Mouseman Wheel. Deze muis heeft natuurlijk alle voor- en nadelen van een optische muis (geen stof, maar niet draadloos). De reviewer is overwegend positief over de muis, maar een nadeel is wel dat je buiten de boot valt als je linkshandig bent. Afgezien daarvan heeft de muis een goed ontwerp, en ziet hij er erg leuk uit :

The MouseMan Wheel is a revision of their older MouseMan. This new iteration adds the optical sensor, a dark-blue metallic color (from the USB connector to the underside sticker), and a blue-iridescent glow to the aft section of the mouse. Last but not least, the Logitech emblem is backlit in blue - making it a very cool mouse in a darkened study. The sensor is red in color, much like Microsoft's IntelliMouse series, Logitech's other products, and Apple's Pro Mouse. Reports of a blue sensor is inaccurate; the only blue lighting is from the 'backlighting' for the emblem that radiates throughout the rest of the mouse's housing. Lastly, the grip sections around the mouse are rubberized as is the wheel control. This makes for a very pleasing feel when handling the mouse.

[...] Closer inspection of the 'guts' of the mouse shows us some rather clever thinking. A weight was added near the top of the mouse, presumably as the mouse was initially too light. No rubber-coated iron balls means less mass; less mass, and the cable becomes a hassle. Studies have shown that people generally prefer heavier things in their hands; it's no secret that people interpret lighter items as being 'cheap' or low-cost. The added mass creates a more 'commanding presence' and in turn rewards the consumer with a psychological boost that what they bought is in effect high-quality. Sounds odd, but this hits it right on the nail. It's no wonder that a growing number of industrial designers and visual interaction designers also have psychology degrees.

IMME liet weten dat de 1GHz PIII eindelijk zijn opwachting heeft gemaakt in onze eigen Pricewatch. Erg goedkoop is het ding niet, want de enige en dus ook laagste prijs is op dit moment FL 3089,- bij Montana Computers. De AMD Thunderbird is een flink stuk goedkoper: de 1GHz Athlon kost FL 1489,- en de 1,1GHz Athlon heeft een laagste prijs van 2179 gulden. Op Pricewatch.com wordt de Gigahertz PIII aangeboden voor een prijs van 715 dollar, omgerekend zo'n 2150 gulden.

JC brengt ons een nieuwe dosis AMD nieuws van het AMD Reseller Seminar. Op dit feestje heeft AMD bekend gemaakt dat er in de tweede helft van 2001 (lekker vraag, reken op Q4) een nieuwe chipset met 400MHz EV6 bus wordt gereleased. Zoals je waarschijnlijk weet, werd er vorig jaar bij de release van de Athlon al aangegeven dat de EV6 bus in staat is om te scalen naar 2*200MHz. Op deze snelheid heeft de bus een bandbreedte van 3,2GB/s, gelijk aan de nieuwe quad pumped bus van de Pentium 4.

In navolging van Intel heeft ook AMD gekozen voor trendy benamingen voor de componenten die tot nu toe de northbridge, southbridge en BIOS chip werden genoemd. De northbridge heet voortaan 'Memory Hub' (Intel: Memory Controller Hub), de southbridge mogen we 'I/O Hub' noemen (Intel: I/O Controller Hub) en de BIOS chipje draagt tegenwoordig de naam 'Firmware Hub' (zelfde benaming als Intel).

Verder heeft JC wat interessante info over de Lightning Data Transport bus. Deze heeft een kloksnelheid van 800MHz en later 1,6GHz. De bandbreedte is 6,4GB/s (het is niet duidelijk of dit op 800MHz of 1,6GHz is, maar ik vermoed het laatste). De LDT bus zal gebruikt worden om de northbridge (euh, Memory Hub) te verbinden met de southbridge en andere I/O subsystems zoals een PCI-X bus. Een tweede erg interessante toepassing is die in multiprocessor systemen, waarbij de LDT bus wordt gebruikt om meerdere northbridges via een crossbar switch aan mekaar te linken. Op die fiets kunnen er 4, 8 of zelfs 16 CPU's worden ondersteund. Dergelijke configuraties kunnen we halverwege 2001 op de markt verwachten.

AMD blijkt plannen te hebben om nog dit jaar USB2.0 en Firewire (IEEE 1394) te ondersteunen. USB2.0 heeft een bandbreedte van 480Mbit/s, terwijl Firewire snelheden van 400 (1394a) tot 800Mb/s (1394b) ondersteund.
