Bij Dan's Data is vandaag een uitgebreide review neergezet over het nieuwste uit de keuken van Logitech, de Cordless MouseMan Optical. Deze muis is zoals de naam aangeeft een lichtgevende muis zonder staartje. Om het stroomverbruik onder de duim te houden is de muis uitgerust met een slim systeem, afhankelijk van de activiteit schakelt de refreshrate tussen 1500, 100, 10 en 2 keer per seconde. Logitech claimt dat de muis dankzij deze technologie ongeveer 3 maanden met een setje batterijen kan doen, zeker geen slechte prestatie hoewel de reviewer een schatting van 2 maanden realistischer vindt.

Verder is de muis uitgerust met de gebruikelijke Logitech software en een USB aansluiting in combinatie met een USB -> PS2 verloopstekkertje. De muis is volgens de reviewer prettig in gebruik, alleen gamers zullen niet zo tevreden zijn met de refreshrate. Een aanrader, tenminste als je het geld er voor hebt en de muis prettig vindt werken :

Then again, the Cordless MouseMan Optical strikes me as a better sight-unseen bet than most sculpted mouses as far as user comfort goes, but that might just be me. It isn't huge or tiny, so it ought to match any right handed user pretty well. And it's not a really avant-garde design, like some mouses I could mention. But it is a funny shape, and you may just not care for it.

Assuming you don't mind the shape, this looks like a fine product for most users. There's a decent selection of buttons, there's OK support software, there's USB and PS/2 compatibility. And there is, of course, no cord. It's expensive, but it's quality.

If you're a hard-core action gamer for whom too much refresh rate is barely enough, no cordless mouse will suit you. 50Hz is fine for general mousing around, though. And if you want a cordless mouse that doesn't need cleaning, this one's the only current option - and will be a better option than any more cheaply engineered corded-mouses hacked into cordless ones without enough attention paid to reducing the power consumption.

If you can stand the price tag and you like the shape, the Cordless MouseMan Optical's a great general purpose input device.

Volgens deze informatie van The Register zal de volgende Matrox-kaart komende week aangekondigd worden en is hij in juni leverbaar. Helemaal zeker dat het hier daadwerkelijk de G550 betreft is het niet, maar omdat de G800 al eerder werd gecancelled is het wel zeer waarschijnlijk. Met een prijskaartje van $150 ~ $200 schijnt het kaartje o.a. te beschikken over 32MB DDR SDRAM geheugen, twee rendering pipelines met elk 3 texture units en een 360MHz RAMDAC. De gebruikte T&L-engine heeft echter slechts beperkte mogelijkheden. Hieronder vind je alvast een voorproefje:

Matrox is thought to be working on a single-chip version, the G550. It is said to offer the same 128-bit DDR support and dual rendering pipeline with three texture units per pipeline, but cuts back the T&L engine to provide just one or two commonly used features. There's matrix skinning and displacement mapping.

The G550 is expected to have a 200-250MHz clock and a 360MHz RAMDAC. The part will be fabbed at 0.18 micron and support AGP 1x, 2x and 4x. The Millennium G550 board will contain 32MB of DDR SDRAM.

According to the Matrox guy, the G550 will ship by the end of May, "at the latest". The chip will almost certainly appear under Matrox's Millennium brand and boards are expected to cost between $150 and $200.

Het databeveiligingsysteem van PrimaCryption is volgens directeur-eigenaar Tom van Rijn zo sterk dat het écht niet te kraken is. Dat hij er veel vertrouwen in heeft blijkt wel uit het feit dat hij een weddenschap durft aan te gaan. Begin juni zal hij namelijk een gecodeerd bestand online zetten; degene die erin slaagt de file te kraken zou mogen rekenen op een auto van fl. 100.000,- :

Alle beveiligingssystemen zijn te kraken: zoek de sleutel en gij zult vinden. "Dat is juist", zegt directeur-eigenaar Tom van Rijn van PrimaCryption, "behalve ons systeem voor databeveiliging." Hij verwedt er een auto van 100.000 gulden onder dat niemand zijn systeem kan kraken. Grootspraak? Begin juni zet Van Rijn een gecodeerd document op de website www.primacryption.com. Welke whizzkid verdient er even snel een ton? Voor deze beveiliging voor o.a. het e-mail verkeer wordt er gebruik gemaakt van een smartcard die ook voor particulier gebruik beschikbaar is.[break]Meer informatie hierover vind je in dit bericht van Ondernemen! Online:[/break]Omdat Van Rijn zich vooral richt op het midden- en kleinbedrijf is het systeem scherp geprijsd. Voor 180 gulden koop je al een smartcard voor puur persoonlijk gebruik: encrypten van documenten op je eigen harde schijf. Van Rijn legt uit hoe dat werkt: "De smartcard steek je in een kaartlezer die aan de computer is gekoppeld (deze lezer, die ook in het toetsenbord geïntegreerd kan zijn, kost circa 100 gulden, TvdV). Op het beeldscherm verschijnt dan een venster waarin je bestanden selecteert die je wilt beveiligen. Dat gebeurt vervolgens in enkele seconden."

De encrypte bestanden kunnen gewoon op de harde schijf blijven staan, beveiligd tegen iedere hacker die de computer binnendringt tijdens een internetverbinding, of tegen een collega of medewerker die niet alles mag of hoeft te weten. Zonder kaartje kom je er absoluut niet meer bij.

Volgens een anonieme bron van Ace's Hardware noemt AMD de nieuwe versie van de Athlon gebaseerd op de Palomino core in interne documenten "Athlon 4". Het lijkt er dus op dat dit de nieuwe naam gaat worden van de processor. Het cijfer vier in de naam is natuurlijk direct afgeleid van de directe concurrent: de Pentium 4. Net zoals bij de K6-2 en K6-III zou dit moeten helpen om minder technische klanten ervan te overtuigen dat de processor een volwaardig alternatief voor een chip van Intel is. In werkelijkheid is Palomino model 6 van de Athlon core; de huidige Thunderbird core is model 4. Volgens dit artikel (thanks Kaap) zal Palomino betere branch prediction, hardware prefetching en ondersteuning voor grotere caches hebben. Ook zou het stroomverbruik lager zijn dankzij het gebruik van puur silicium:

This is a rather logical step, as the K6-2 was positioned against the PII and the K6-III was aiming at the PIII. The "Athlon 4" name should convince the less technical inclined consumer that the Athlon is the alternative to the Pentium 4.

Max Page van FrostyTech trakteert ons vandaag op een review van de Swiftech MC462-A Rev1 heatsink. Deze heatsink heeft 261 aluminium pinnen en een 9mm dikke koperen basis. Het verschil met eerdere MC462 versies is dat de hoekjes een inkepinkje hebben, zodat je geen transistors hoeft te verbuigen om de koeler op je moederbord te plaatsen. Daarnaast is deze heatsink uitgerust met een nieuwe Sanyo Denki fan, welke goed is voor een airflow van 53 CFM en een geluidsproductie van 43dBa.

De koeler is getest op het FrostyTech Synthetic Temperature Test Platform (aluminium blokje dat 50 Watt warmte produceert). De koeler staat op nummer één in het lijstje van FrostyTech, boven de Zalman CNPS3100 en de GlobalWin WBK 38. De MC462-A Rev1 is uitstekend qua kwaliteit, maar kost ook wel aardig wat: 80 dollar. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

Of the many heatsinks we have tested out previously, the SwiftTech is one of the largest, if not the largest. Weighing in at 760 grams it is also one very heavy heatsink. Most of its weight comes from the thick copper base which gives it the ability to transfer heat laterally to its' many aluminum pins. While the MC462-A sits at a high price point, it can offer the performance user some very valuable cooling head room.

The fan on the MC462-A Rev1 is large, and at 43dBa noticeably louder than most other cooling solutions. Inside of a case tucked under a desk it shouldn't be too much of a problem. The RPM monitoring lead is a good feature for anyone of us, who in the past had to get used to not being able to monitor the speed of a fan plugged directly into the power supply Molex connectors.

[...] All in all, the MC462-A Rev1 is an excellent upgrade from its previous iteration, the MC462-A. By offering a large and powerful Sanyo Denki fan, notched corners for capacitor clearance, and that oh so smooth base Swift Tech have a winning heatsink on their hands. We should also mention that with a little modification this heatsink should be compatible with socket 423 Intel processors.

Als gevolg van een nieuw variant op het LoveLetter-virus hebben een aantal Nederlandse bedrijven hun mailserver op voorzorg afgesloten. De worm (VBS/Homepage-mm) verspreidt zichzelf via een .vbs attachment in een e-mail met als subject "Hi! You've got to see this page! It's really cool ;O)". Het lijkt er dus maar weer op dat veel mensen klakkeloos álles openen wat er in hun Outlook beland, want het virus heeft zich al weidelijk verspreidt. Echt schadelijk is het beestje gelukkig niet: na het vermenigvuldigen via het adresboek belaagt hij je Internet Explorer met wat pornosites. Meer info vind je bij Security.nl:

De redactie van Security.nl krijgt van verschillende kanten berichten dat het 'homepage virus' (VBS/SST.gen@MM) aan een opmars binnen Nederland bezig is. Het virus bereikt de gebruiker via email in een bericht met als subject Homepage en als de tekst Hi! You've got to see this page! It's really cool ;O) met een attachment genaamd homepage.HTML.vbs. Gebruikers die de 'handige' standaardinstelling 'bestandstype verbergen' aan hebben staan zien alleen 'homepage.HTML'. Bij aanklikken verspreid het virus zich via email naar alle emailadressen in het Microsoft Outlook adresboek. Daarna opent het virus in de Internet Explorer een aantal porno-sites. Het virus is gemaakt met dezelfde virusgenerator waarmee een jonge Snekenaar zich eerder dit jaar met het Anna Kournikova virus naar zijn '15 minutes of fame' klikte. Er zijn al bedrijven die de mailserver uit voorzorg hebben afgesloten.

CNet News meldt ons dat we nu Cisco Systems toe kunnen voegen aan het lijstje met IT-bedrijven die verlies hebben geleden de afgelopen tijd. De fabrikant van netwerkapparatuur maakte gisteren bekend dat het in het eerste kwartaal van 2001 een recordverlies van 2,69 miljard dollar heeft geleden. Vorig jaar werd er in de eerste 3 maanden nog een winst van 641 miljoen dollar behaald.

Gelukkig voor Cisco klinken de cijfers erger dan dat het is: zonder bijzondere lasten had het bedrijf zelfs 320 miljoen dollar winst gemaakt. Het verlies het grotendeels toe te schrijven aan de kosten van reorganisaties en afschrijving van overbodige inventaris. Dit alles kostte het bedrijf een slordige 3 miljard dollar.

Verder lijken investeerders toch tevreden met deze resultaten: de omzet daalde maar licht en bovendie was de winst nog iets hoger dan verwacht. Cisco verwacht verder dat het bedrijf verder blijft groeien. Op de lange termijn gaan ze uit van een gemiddelde omzetgroei van 30 a 50% per jaar.

Cisco reduced its inventory charge to about $2.25 billion from the $2.5 billion that was announced previously. Chief Financial Officer Larry Carter said the company does not expect to use the inventory in the next 12 months unless demand significantly improves, upon which the company would exclude the benefit from its pro forma margin results.

Chris Pittman komt met een vergelijking tussen de Palm M505 en de Handspring Visor Prism. Beide apparaatjes zijn voorzien van een 33MHz Motorola Dragonball VZ en 8 MB geheugen. De twee beestjes beschikken over een 16-bit display. De Prism gebruikt een active matrix screen met backlight. Palm gebruikt daarentegen een reflective color screen met een front light.

Uit de PocketMark benchmarks blijkt dat de handhelds bij de GraphMarks, PalmMarks en FloatMarks redelijk dicht bij elkaar liggen. De Palm M505 heeft echter een grote voorsprong bij de DBMarks en MemMarks. Dit zou ook aan een andere OS versie kunnen liggen. Hieronder de conclusie:

So, what does all this rambling mean? First off, color is not a necessity, but makes for the geek factor that we all cherish. You have to pay to play, though: at around $450, these PDA's aren't cheap. The Palm M505 has the Visor beat on size, expansion cost, screen flexibility, battery life, the cover (not a big deal, but I liked it), and the ability to flash the OS. The Visor wins in the expansion flexibility, screen brightness in low light and indoors, and the cradle category. If MemPlug gets their app out that allows programs to run from their expansion card, then the Prism will be more apt to compete in the cost of memory expansion department. I'm going to say the benchmarks are a wash and are for info only.

Looks to me like the Palm M505 kicks the hell out of the Handspring Visor Prism. OK, maybe it wasn't that bad, but the Palm is the clear winner. Not to say that the Prism didn't have its day. Before the M505, the Prism was the king of the hill. It's still a good contender and has its place when people don't care about size, won't use it in daylight, and would like the options that the Springboard platform provides. I don't think you will be disappointed with either the M505 or Prism, but the M505 just blends more features which makes it more attractive.

The Palm M505 is a great piece of equipment with all the features anyone needs in a Palm-based PDA in the near future. They put a lot of thought into the overall design, taking into account convenience, flexibility, and performance. My main gripe is the lack of contrast adjustment. Other than that I think Palm hit a home run. I bought the M505 and plan on letting it into a dear place in my heart. The Palm M505 is pcSCOOP's Excellence Award. Now we have a new champion. Who will step up to challenge it for the title?

Twee weken geleden meldden wij dat de WIGG (Wanadoo Internet Gebruikers Groep) een kort geding aanspande tegen Wanadoo. Men eiste dat een deel van het (teveel) betaalde abonnementsgeld moest worden terugbetaald en dat Wanadoo een minimumgarantieniveau moest noemen, waarmee surfen op een acceptabele wijze mogelijk gemaakt wordt.

De rechtbank in Den Haag heeft echter bepaald dat Wanadoo geen minimumsnelheid van haar internetverbinding hoeft te garanderen. De rechtbankpresident J. Holtrop vindt dat de aanbieder geen wanprestatie levert. "De WIGG kan niet van Wanadoo verlangen voor een dubbeltje op de eerste rij te zitten. Indien zij als internetgebruikers de factor snelheid van groot belang achten, zouden zij op de gedachte kunnen komen dat zij bij gedaagde niet aan het goede adres zijn", aldus de rechter:

Casema stelde tijdens het Kort Geding dat geen enkele garantie is te geven. Ook zegt Casema dat uit een representatief onderzoek is gebleken dat de meeste abonnees zeer tevreden zijn over het Casema internet. De klachten van de WIGG missen volgens Casema grond. De WIGG telt slechts circa 2200 leden en de overige ca 55.000 abonnees zouden tevreden zijn.

PCWold.com bericht dat een verdrievoudiging van de CD-R prijzen komende zomer wordt verwacht. De prijzen van CD-RW schijfjes zullen geen grote verandering ondergaan. Gevolg van deze komende drastische prijsstijging is een flinke onderproductie. In 1999 was er een overproductie van ongeveer 1 miljard CD-R’tjes, waardoor veel fabrikanten CD-R’tjes voor erg weinig verkochten. Nu is een groot deel van deze fabrikanten uit de business gegaan en een ander deel van de fabrikanten draait niet meer op volle kracht:

This summer, discs are expected to cost 30 to 35 cents on average, after being "down as low as 10 cents a disc" on a spindle, says Peter Brown, removable-storage analyst at IDC.

While that percentage increase seems like a lot, it's still less than last year's average cost for CD-R media, pegged by IDC at 47 cents per disc.

However, the increase in CD-R media prices lowers pressure on CD-Rewritable media, which should stay around current prices (about 70 cents per disc) instead of dropping. The reason is that CD-RW media is less affected by market fluctuations; the formulation of rewritable discs is a costlier process. Plus, adds Brown, "the volumes are still not going to be quite as much as you're seeing with CD-R media."

Announcements of price hikes are pending from CD media sellers Memorex, TDK, and Verbatim, a subsidiary of Japanese giant Mitsubishi Chemical. A TDK spokesperson declines to say how soon consumers will notice the hike, but says it will be substantial in relation to where the prices are now.

A computer chattered to itself in alarm as it noticed an airlock open and close itself for no apparent reason. This was because Reason was in fact out to lunch. A hole had just appeared in the Galaxy. It was exactly a nothingth of a second long, a nothingth of an inch wide, and quite a lot of millions of light years from end to end.

As it closed up, lots of paper hats and party balloons fell out of it and drifted off through the Universe. A team of seven three-foot-high market analysts fell out of it and died, partly of asphyxiation, partly of surprise. Two hundred and thirty-nine thousand lightly fried eggs fell out of it too, materializing in a large wobbly heap on the famine-struck land of Poghril in the Pansel system. The whole Poghril tribe had died out from famine except for one last man who died of cholesterol poisoning some weeks later.

On a small insignificant planet named Earth 3.486.442 finished RC5-64 workunits arrived at a master keyserver somewere in a Network Operations Center in the USA obliterating every other team with 1.324.419 advantage. What did not appear though was a fresh warm cup of coffee right here next to my keyboard. Bummer.
