Op DangerousDog is een review geparkeerd van de Zalman CNPS3100. Deze heatsink bestaat uit vijftig koperen plaatjes, die geplaatst zijn in een waaiervorm. In tegenstelling tot bijna alle andere koelers komt de Zalman met een 80mm fan die niet op de heatsink geschroefd moet worden, maar via een soort houder aan de zijkant van de kast naast de heatsink moet worden bevestigd. De Zalman is vergeleken met de TaiSol CGK742092 in zowel normal als noiseless mode. Zoals je in het grafiekje hieronder kunt zien wist de Zalman de TaiSol te verslaan in noiseless (stress). Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

My own conclusion is this is an excellent cooler able to perform with the best of them even though I don't think they were originally designed to. I haven't commented much on the noise this HSF makes and that's because, really, there isn't any. In normal mode the fan makes a very low humming sound, quieter than almost any cooler I have used - In noiseless mode it is exactly that. It is near impossible to hear the fan , all the noise I can hear coming from my system is from the PSU fan and the two Blue Orbs.

I am almost 100% happy with the CNPS3100 and I find it difficult to understand how it has been rated so poorly by some - this is an extremely good cooler which makes very little noise and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. The likes of the FOP/WBK-38 and the Thermoengine would no doubt keep the CPU cooler but, rest assured, this HSF will be staying in my system for some time...

Hoewel Microsoft al tijden plannen heeft liggen om voor software te laten betalen in de vorm van een abonnement in plaats van als eenmalige licentie, zal het volgens de laatste berichten bij Office XP nog allemaal loslopen. Voorlopig wil het bedrijf alleen in Australië, Nieuw-Zeeland en Brazilië gaan experimenteren met deze nieuwe manier van verkoop. Voor Europa en Amerika staan voorlopig geen abonnementen op de planning. Op C|Net staat dat grote bedrijven waarschijnlijk wel al de gevolgen van de nieuwe strategie zullen merken. De nieuwe massa-licenties zullen namelijk slechts drie jaar geldig zijn, waarna opnieuw betaald moet worden. Dit zou voor een bedrijf een goed moment zijn om te upgraden naar een nieuwere versie, iets wat op dit moment steeds minder gebeurt. Geschat wordt dat 60% van de gebruikers nog Office '95 of '97 draait, omdat men niet overtuigd is van de voordelen van upgraden:

We're confident that this is what Microsoft would want us to do; otherwise they'd have said something meaningful when they had the chance.

Our first guess is the most elementary: that beta-testers didn't trust the renewal scheme out of fear they'd get stuck buying a full version at some point in future, such as the day when MS decides that software subscriptions are an incredibly dumb, Bob-ish idea.

Guess number two is that the company needs cash to shore up its revenues for the next few quarters; and of course upgrading will bring in far more of it far sooner than long-term subscriptions. Office is a proven cash cow; and if MS is looking to lean on it a bit now, it's probably be because it's lost confidence that Windows XP and the X-Box can generate revenues sufficient to keep Wall Street off its back in the coming months.

For a third possibility, one could imagine that MS doesn't have a decent renewal mechanism in place and has decided not to solicit obligations it's unsure how to satisfy. In that case, look for long delays in getting the grand .NET scheme off the ground.

FullOn3D heeft acht pagina's volgeschreven over anti-aliasing, een feature dat al behoorlijk lang bestaat maar pas sinds kort binnen het bereik van de normale gamer ligt. Eerst wordt heel simpel uiteengezet wat aliasing is; het ontstaan van gekartelde randjes op plaatsen waar objecten elkaar overlappen. Daarna komen diverse technieken aan bod zoals supersampling, multisampling en in de GeForce3 geïntroduceerde variant genaamd Quincunx. Naast de uitgebreide technische uitleg zijn er natuurlijk ook veel screenshots te bekijken. Wat erg leuk gedaan is zijn de plaatjes die veranderen zodra de muis er overheen beweegt, op die manier kun je de verschillen met eigen ogen bestuderen:

Although this particular slope does not show off 4X OG mode particularly well, I think that the improvement in quality produced by the Quincunx mode over the standard 2X RG mode can just about be seen. Whether this slight improvement is worth the 15% in performance drop and the blurred texture detail, well, only you can decide. I still think my 4X RG arrangement produces the best quality, but at this time it comes at too great a performance hit to make it worth the trouble. Something for the future maybe.

In een bericht op The Register staat dat Intel de introductie van de Foster heeft uitgesteld naar het einde van de maand. Als reden voor de vertraging wordt gegeven dat op het laatste moment problemen met de verpakking van de chip zijn ontdekt. Volgens Intel is er al een oplossing voor het probleem gevonden, maar duurt het een paar weken om te implementeren. De nieuwe Xeon is gebaseerd op de Pentium 4 core en zou eigenlijk vandaag gereleased worden op snelheden van minstens 1,4GHz. De klanten zijn al gewaarschuwd:

According to Intel, the P4 Xeon was due to ship today at speeds of "equal to or greater than 1.4GHz". This CPU is aimed at single- and dual- processor systems.

According to the company's server and workstation processor roadmap, the multi-processor version is expected in Q4, at 1.6GHz and up and with 512KB or 1MB of on-die L3 cache.

Ace's Hardware heeft vandaag deel 2 van het in-depth performance artikel afgemaakt, waarin de GeForce3 en Kyro II uitgebreid bekeken worden. De vorige keer werd vooral gekeken naar de resultaten van games. Dit keer gaat men dieper in op het schalen van de performance door snellere processors en de spellen van de toekomst, waarin 3DMark2001 een belangrijke rol speelt. Daarnaast geeft men resultaten van de verschillende kaarten in professionele OpenGL applicaties en heeft men een beeld van de stabiliteit op verschillende platformen. Zelfs DVD en 2D performance komen aan bod. De conclusie is dat de GeForce3 de beste investering is en dat de Kyro II het beste kan worden vergeleken met de GeForce2 MX. Voor deze kaart is de Kyro II een zeer geduchte concurrent, mits het alleen bij gamen blijft:

The GeForce 3 is far and away the most complete and future-proof 3D accelerator available today. It offers better performance than the best video cards out there, even with DirectX 7 games. Right now, the most important features are the bandwidth saving ones, but you can be sure that when DirectX 8 games begin to hit the streets, they will look better on the GeForce 3

[...] However, the KYRO II only performs well under certain conditions. While this doesn't have to be a problem, the future owner of a Kyro II should be well aware of these conditions. In order to achieve maximum performance:

• You should always disable anisotrophic filtering, even if it is the default filtering option for a particular game.
  
• You should get/have a strong CPU to make sure that upcoming games with high polygon counts run well. A Duron 850 or better is strongly advised.

The Kyro II is a pure gamers card, and the engineering student who wants to do a little gaming and 3D CAD on his system is better off with a GeForce 2 MX/MX400.

Chris Connolly heeft een review in elkaar geknutseld over de 1830KB LCD monitor van NEC. Deze monitor is uitgerust met een 18.1" TFT active matrix LCD scherm die een native resolutie van 1280x1024 bezit. Verder heeft ie een 0.28mm dot pitch en een tweetal analoge HD-15 aansluitingen. Volgens de reviewer is de beeldkwaliteit prima in orde en is het prijskaartje erg aantrekkelijk. Enige minpuntje is het ontbreken van een DVI aansluiting:

For it's low price of admission (under $1500 now), the NEC 1830 is a top notch LCD monitor. Of the batch of monitors that have come through our hands, we have yet to see one with a dead pixel, and each have had very good overall image quality. If you look around, you can still find generic 18" LCD monitors retailing for more than $2000-3000, which is why we were so surprised to see the price tag on this screen.

Plus, it's black! Let's face it, this monitor looks really good on a desk. Pair this bad boy up with some black speakers and a black Lian Li case, and you've got yourself a nice looking system.

NEC could certainly make this the end-all be-all LCD monitor on the market if they added DVI connectivity to the screen while maintaining the same price. NEC does make 20" LCD's with DVI connectivity through a Silicon Image (Panellink) chip. No doubt this chip is likely to be expensive, but I feel it would bring this monitor to up to the professional level. Even if the price tag was $100 or $200 more than it currently is, it would be worth it to have digital connectivity. Just think.. Digital 18" LCD powered by a GeForce3. Ahh, Heaven.

Op Mikhailtech is een Pentium 4 Heatsink roundup te vinden. Eerst krijg je wat info over het retention mechanisme van de Pentium 4. Vervolgens komen achtereenvolgens deze coolers aan de beurt: de Coolermaster DP4-6I11, de Globalwin WAW-38 and WAW-68, de Taisol CEP405092 en de EKL 20804011005. Vervolgens zijn deze coolers getest op verschillende wattages en dat resulteerde in de volgende conclusie:

Well, even if it’s not either the absolute best performer or the more silent cooler, the winner is without any doubt the Taisol CEP405092. Is about the same, noise-wise, of all the other coolers with a Delta Low Profile fan, but is really close in performance to the WAW-38 which uses a Delta Black Label fan. The pure noise winner is the EKL, thanks to its fan but its performance is pretty basic. This makes it a good cooler for a stock P4 up to 1.5 Ghz but not an overclocker's friend. The pure performance winner is the WAW-38 that manages to outperform every other cooler thanks to the Black Label fan.

De mannen van Virtual Hideout hebben vandaag een review gebakken over de Lian Li PC-30 kast. Deze kast is de kleine broer van de bekende PC-60 kast en in het bezit van twee 5.25" bays en zes 3.5" bays. Verder is er een redelijke koeling aanwezig in de vorm van twee 80mm fans samen met een soort van ingebouwde baybus. Perfect is de kast zeker niet: de plaatsing van de voeding is verre van ideaal en ook de prijs is aan de hoge kant. Maar als je een frequente lanner bent kan het een aantrekkelijke kast zijn:

The Mini PC30 is not a case for everybody, but rather appeals to a select group of users, namely the frequent LAN-Goers! The size and aluminium construction makes it very light and easy to carry around. Only two 5.25" bays is present in the case, but there's a total of 6 3.5" bays! Much more than you'll find in some of the Mid Tower cases out there. Cooling is decent, but could be better with a little mod for exhaust fans. Power supply unit mounting is a little awkward and due to that, some large HSF would be obstructed by it. It get's even worse if you have an Enermax PSU and you'll find that the extra fan on the PSU will face outwards instead of facing the CPU and sucking out the heat from it. The fan grill from the extra PSU fan would also cause an obstruction to some HSFs. Price is another factor to consider here. The Mini PC30 cost US$179.99 over at PCMods.Com's Products Page, but the larger and more popular PC60 will only set you back for another US$10! It's all up to you...

Doordat de keymaster van distributed.net gisteren een paar uur down is geweest hebben de stats erg lang op zich laten wachten. Nu ze er eindelijk zijn is het resultaat voor DPC niet echt geweldig, 2,5 miljoen blokjes, maar dat kan natuurlijk komen doordat de keymaster nog niet alle blokjes verwerkt heeft.

Maar om toch het zekere voor het onzekere te nemen zou het geen gek idee zijn om nog wat extra koetjes uit te zetten, en daarmee te voorkomen dat we deze score ooit nog eens terugzien.
