Tom wist zich op het laatste moment toch nog een pers kaart te verschaffen en brengt daarom toch een verslag van de CeBIT 2000. Naast geblurb over Tom's eetgewoontes krijgen we informatie over Intel ('kleine stand, vies eten'), het Ziff-Davis persfeestje (saampjes op de foto), VIA ('voelt zich sterk'), 3dfx ('grote tieten ipv snelle chips') en AMD. Laatstgenoemde demonstreerde achter gesloten deuren een Thunderbird op 1116MHz (thanks Basb voor de tip):

In a funky glass room AMD showed the air-cooled Athlon 1100 that some of the journalists already knew from AMD's neighborhood-show to IDF. The system ran at exactly 1116 MHz and we took the chance of playing around with the system after the presenter had left the room for a few minutes. All software we could try and that was installed on the system ran without a problem. This time we had requested to look inside the case, to see what Thunderbird (Athlon with on-die L2-cache) actually looks like. I was very impressed to see everybody scramble and look for a screwdriver to fulfill my wish.

Uit een poll van The Register onder moederbord fabrikanten op de CeBIT is gebleken dat er onder fabrikanten weinig enthousiasme voor de i820 leeft. De verkopen van i820 plank blijken tegen te vallen (thanks insane ):

Soyo, Chaintech, Gigabyte, Asus and a clutch of other Taiwanese mobo manufacturers were displaying boards using the i820 chipset, but conversations with staff at these stands demonstrated a general lack of enthusiasm -- and weak sales -- for products based on the Intel solution.

[...] Staff at the different stands all said that sales of their boards using the current revision of the i820 were weak. One told us: "Write something nice about the i820 so we can sell more boards".

Verder heb ik ook gemerkt dat mobobakkers niet erg blij zijn met de wijze waarop zij i820 en Rambus door de strot gedouwd kregen. Ze staan dan ook vrolijk KX133 en Irongate borden te showen, dit terwijl de Athlon op de Comdex in november nog grotendeels genegeerd werd.

RikY schrijft: "BP6.com meldt dat Abit het QQ beta bios voor de BP6 wat verbeterd heeft. Het nieuwe bios heeft de orginele naam QQ-2. De problemen met ATi videokaarten zouden gefixed zijn, en er is een probleempje met CPU fan RPM verholpen.

Het QQ-2 beta bios is hier te downloaden."

Overclockers' Workbench brengt ons een review van de Epox 7KXA, een van de eerste KX133 moederborden die op de markt verschenen is. Qua overclocking wist de 7KXA een bussnelheid van 115MHz te trekken, helemaal niet slecht dus vergeleken met veel eerdere AMD Irongate plankjes. Hieronder wat meer info:

ZDNet heeft een artikel neer gemikt met wat meer info over Microsoft's game console, de X-Box. Er gaan sterke geruchten dat Bill deze bak zal gaan aankondigen op de Game Developer's Conference die over twee weken in San Jose gehouden wordt. Het feit dat xbox.com door MS gekocht is bevestigd dit alleen maar.

This week the software giant completed the purchase of the xbox.com domain name, lending that much more credence to the industry buzz that it's creating a next-generation gaming platform -- known as the "Xbox" -- to compete with Sony Electronics Inc.'s (NYSE: SNE) upcoming PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Ltd.'s device, code-named Dolphin. [...] Last August, Xbox sightings filtered in from the European Computer Trade Show, where Microsoft reportedly held closed-door demonstrations for software developers. With the expertise of its WebTV Networks Inc. subsidiary, the company could easily support Internet features, such as chat and multiplayer gaming, in the device as well. Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans expect the devices to use either Intel Corp.'s (Nasdaq: INTC) Celeron processor or Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s (NYSE: AMD) Athlon processor, in addition to 64MB of memory, a 4GB hard drive and the latest graphics chip from Nvidia Inc. VHware meldt dat bij 3DNow.org een aantal AMD nieuwtjes vanuit de CeBIT beurs in Hannover gepost zijn. Interessant is de pic van de Spitfire, een value versie van de Athlon met full-speed L2 cache die gebruik zal maken van Socket A. Hieronder de soep:

• No K6-2+ for the desktop, just mobile. Same for K6-III+. Both chips will have power reduction technology. I saw it working and it looks like good stuff.
• AMD had a 1116 MHz Athlon (copper chip from Dresden) running. This was a standard Athlon still, no Thunderbird. Nothing more shown than a 3D demo and the clock speed readout, though, to show that copper works.
• I saw the first sample of a Socket A Athlon, which obviously had to be a Spitfire with on-die cache. The chip surface has a greenish tint (as opposed to Coppermine's blue tint) and there are some little chips on top of the ceramics. Cool gold print of the AMD letters and some other writing. • Lots of KX133 and Irongate boards with many major manufacturers.
• Athlon 950 samples had been distributed to several OEMs
• FIC had a 1 GHz air cooled Athlon running
• Saw Voodoo5 in action but it was still alpha silicon, looked pretty spiffy on antialiasing, though

Insane stuurde een link op naar de (Duitse) site van c't waar een groot artikel is gepost over de VIA / Cyrix III 'Joshua' processor, inclusief een hele hoop benchmarks. Net als de Quake III benchmarks van Thresh's FiringSquad loopt de Cyrix hier duidelijk achter bij de Celeron en de K6-3, het verschil loopt op tot wel 40%. Volgens dit interview met een mannetje van VIA zal de uiteindelijke performance een stuk hoger liggen omdat er nog het een en ander gefixt zal worden voordat de processor echt in produktie gaat.
