Well, live by the sword, die by the sword. Here is a real world app that to the best of my knowledge does use T&L and has the option to toggle it on and off. THIS IS A REAL GAME YOU CAN BUY. Remember that. We see from the screens above that T&L on the nVidia GeForce is in NO WAY a help whatsoever. In fact it totally hinders the game in 32 bit if in fact the D3D HAL is running 32 bit. That is why I took the screenshots from the demo above in 32 bit. There is a big performance hit but not image quality enhancement that I can see.

Now is this the fault of the card or the game? Well I don't know, but still, it is a game that people are going to be playing that says it utilizes T&L and it does not do dick for the game. Now what we need is a REAL GAME to show us how well it CAN be utilized. Not a synthetic benchmark, because NOBODY is gonna be happy with that one apparently.

Until I see that, I have to think that the T&L hype that nVidia is simply that, HYPE. Please someone prove me wrong soon. We hardware freaks really want to know.

De New Yorkse rechter die de zaak tegen drie verspreiders van de DeCSS DVD copy software behandelt, veroordeelt het handelen van de hackers community. De rechter stoort zich aan het feit dat de hackers geprobeerd hebben om de DeCSS software zo wijd mogelijk te verspreiden (thanks Bram Heerink voor de tip):

In zijn 30 pagina's tellende einduitspraak, die donderdag gepubliceerd werd, zegt rechter Lewis Kaplan dat hij vindt dat de drie websitebeheerders met erg lichtzinnige argumenten komen. De filmindustrie, die de rechtszaak had aangespannen, heeft veel sterkere standpunten.

Kaplan stelde op 20 januari acht filmmaatschappijen, waaronder Universal Studios, MGM en Time Warner, in het gelijk. De rechter liet duidelijk merken zich te storen aan het feit dat hackers hebben geprobeerd om DeCSS zo wijd mogelijk te verspreiden. Zelfs op T-shirts verscheen de broncode van het Content Scrambling System.

Een harde beslissing, maar het is inderdaad wel heel erg omstreden. Aan de andere kant betekent dit wel de pest voor een goeie DVD speler onder Linux.

Mandrake Software heeft 64-bit port van haar Linux distributie uitgebracht voor de Sun UltraSPARC. Mandrake begint zich duidelijk steeds meer te profileren als een distributie met toekomst. Alleen snap ik nog niet echt wat een super user friendly OS moet op een Corporate server?

Abit have developed a fix for the High Point HPT366 controllers for running Maxtor drives.

ISSUE:

Some UDMA 66 drives exhibit multiple problems when connected to the High Point HPT366 onboard UDMA 66 controllers on the ABIT BE6 & BP6 motherboards. These are unique boards that contain four (4) onboard controllers; two that are UDMA/66 capable (HPT366) and two that are only UDMA/33 capable. It is important to note that the DiamondMax UDMA/66 drives will NOT exhibit hanging symptoms and function normally when attached to the UDMA/33 controller(s) found on the BE6 & BP6

motherboards. These symptoms are SPECIFIC to UDMA/66 controllers (HPT366) found on these motherboards.

Please note that this is a problem with the Highpoint drivers, not with the Maxtor drive.

SOLUTION:

Go to http://www.abit.com.tw/english/download/index.htm and down load the latest BIOS for your particular ABIT motherboard, which you find under 'BIOS Update'.

Also download a driver called 1200.exe, from the 'Drivers'---> 'Hot Rod66 and/or ABIT on-board UDMA/ATA/66 controller' directory.

Once these files are obtained you need to do the following:

1. Install the drive on the Primary UDMA 33 bus.

2. Install the operating system.

3. Perform the BIOS upgrade

4. Load the new driver from 1200.EXE.

5. Move the drive to the HTP366 (UDMA 66) bus.

This should resolve this problem with the Highpoint drivers.

We have also found that if there is also a SCSI adapter in the system, that this sometimes will conflict with the IRQ's and needs to be removed prior to installing the HTP366 drivers. Once the drive is working properly, you can re-install the SCSI card. The SCSI card and driver conflict may be slot sensitive, if so try the card in another slot.

The Crusoe is fabricated and packaged by IBM's Microelectronic Division on a .22 micron process. Both chips have an integrated northbridge, which is usually a separate part. The integrated northbridge supplies the PCI interface, the memory controller, and a serial I/O port for reading software from ROM (more on the ROM later).

Elizabeth Connor (nieuw ?) heeft bij Tom's Hardware Guide een een kleine preview neergemikt over de verschillende Transmeta Crusoe processoren die we kunnen gaan verwachten. Hieronder vast een plak over de TM3120 en TM5400:

According to Transmeta the first two Crusoe models, the TM3120 and TM5400, were designed for minimal space and power consumption. By eliminating roughly 75 % of the logic transistors that would be required for an all-hardware design of similar performance, it was also possible to reduce the die size of the chip and thus the power dissipation. The difference is quite substantial: at comparable clock frequencies without active cooling a Pentium III sizzles at 105 C (221 F) when playing a DVD, the TM5400 only reaches 48 C (118 F). Another feature of the TM5400 is a power-saving technology called LongRun: it allows the TM5400 to adjust its power consumption without turning itself off but by adjusting its clock frequency on the fly.

Targeted at Web pads and mobile clients the TM3120 features 96 KB of L1 cache, a die size of 77 mm² and runs Mobile Linux in ROM. It is immediately available costing $65 for the 333 MHz and $89 for the 400 MHz version. The TM5400 is sampling and is supposed to be shipping by mid 2000. It comes with 128 KB L1 cache, 256 KB L2 cache, runs Microsoft Windows and NT, is aimed at ultra-light mobile PCs and costs $119 for the 500 MHz and $329 for the 700 MHz version. The die size is 73 mm². Both processors have an integrated Northbridge. As a fabless semiconductor company Transmeta needed a manufacturing partner: IBM produces the chips in 0.22 and possibly 0.18-micron technology, respectively. Transmeta has no plans to license the core or to open source the Code Morphing software. The company is selling to OEMs and system manufacturers directly.

Hardware Pros vond het een goed idee om een review te bakken van de Elsa Erazor X2 GeForce kaart met DDR geheugen en een S-Video uitgang. Hieronder eens een keer wat info over zijn DVD Playback kwaliteiten:

We tested the GeForce's motion compensation with a Pioneer DVD-103S (6X ATAPI) drive and compared it to the TNT2's playback.

With our TNT2 card and a Celeron 570, CPU usage was around 90% and there were no skipped frames or slowdowns. On the ELSA ERAZOR X2 , CPU usage on the same system hovered in the 60-70% range, so there is a noticeable improvement but still not as much as a dedicated hardware MPEG2 decoder card. The image quality between the ERAZOR X2 and the TNT2 were very close with the GeForce only slightly coming out on top with a less visual artifacts.

Hardware Guru Tom Pabst heeft zijn review van het KX133 reference moederbord online gezet. Tom ontdekte dat de KX133 vooral onder 3D games een vrij redelijke voorsprong heeft ten opzichte van de AMD Irongate chipset. Niet geheel onverwacht is dit niet te wijten aan AGP 4x, maar meer aan PC133 geheugen.

Verder iets vrij opmerkelijks: uit de SPECviewperf benchmarks bleek dat (totaal tegen de verwachtingen in) de KX133 erg slecht presteert onder NT, terwijl onder het brakke Win98 de scores veel hoger liggen. Nu draait elke workstation haar OpenGL-software onder NT, dus dit kan gezien worden als een vrij groot probleem. Tom vermoedt dan ook dat er hier sprake is van bewuste manipulatie:

I can't help it, but that really stinks! Coppermine scores higher under NT than under Win98, which is what everybody would expect. It also scores way higher than Athlon under NT, something nobody would expect. Running SPECviewperf under Windows98 (what no sane person would ever do) reveals that Athlon's Win98-scores are not only higher than Coppermine's Win98-scores, they are even higher than some of Coppermine's NT-scores! Athlon's Win98-scores prove that this processor can run OpenGL-software on GeForce very well, but under NT, where those scores are important, Athlon performs miserably. Could it be that somebody who doesn't want Athlon to look good on workstations is trying to make sure that either GeForce's (and thus Quadro's) NT-driver runs really bad as soon as it detects an Athlon-processor, or is there some strange anti-Athlon-software in WindowsNT's latest service pack? Many of you will know that Quadro, a NVIDIA GeForce-chip with 64 MB DDR-memory, is an extremely good high-end OpenGL-performer and will thus sell very well in the workstation area. Making sure that Athlon performs really badly with this graphics card almost means barring Athlon's well-deserved way into the workstation-segment. The SPECviewperf-scores under Windows98 prove that there's certainly no hardware problem between GeForce and Athlon. They also prove that Athlon is actually performing better than Coppermine in OpenGL. The fishy scores under NT raise some serious questions towards NVIDIA, Microsoft and also AMD, since nobody there seems to have noticed this issue early enough. [break]Hieronder de eindconclusie van Tom; moeten we de KX133 allemaal gaan kopen?'[/break]If you are an end-user you certainly want to know if I recommend motherboards with this chipset. My answer is simple. If you are planning to buy an Athlon platform you should not possibly miss it. If you already own an Athlon-system with AMD's 750 chipset and if you mainly run office applications or web-software then I can't see any reason why you would have to swap your current motherboard with a KX133-board. Office applications hardly benefit from higher memory-throughput, something that makes Intel-platforms with i820 or i840 chipsets completely unattractive to office users as well. Gamers have to decide if the 5-7% in gaming performance offered by KX133 are reason enough to say goodbye to their old Irongate-boards.

Virtual Zone brengt ons een nieuwe Intel Roadmap. Volgens onderstaande tekeningetje mogen we rond de komende jaarwisseling een 1.4GHz Willamette processor verwelkomen. Een 700Mhz Coppermine-128K Celeron komt ergens in het midden van dit jaar. De eerste 1GHz P3 Coppermine volgt pas in Q4. Verder komt ook de Tinma processor dit jaar op de markt. Deze 'pc on a chip' heeft geïntegreerde 3D graphics en memory controller en zal ook in het 4e kwartaal leverbaar worden, in snelheden vanaf 600MHz. Klik op de roadmap voor de uitvergroting.

Volgens Riva Extreme is er een Guillemot 3D Prophet 'SE' in omloop waarbij er geen 5ns, maar 7ns geheugen is gebruikt! De kaart is dan ook lager geklokt, 110/143MHz in plaats van de normale 120/166MHz.

I recently purchased one of the $169 Prophet 3D cards from Micro Pro in Cleveland, which is listing the card for $169 on pricewatch (I live in Cleveland and picked it up).

IT IS NOT A PROPHET 3D! It is a Prophet 3D SE with 7nsec ram instead of 5.5 nsec ram. If you go into the overclocking panel it is being run at 110/143 instead of 120/166.

Please let your readers and all of the other Geforce sites know about this. They are not selling what they are advertising. I informed them of this, and I'm sure that the technical wizards that they were, they will not change the pricewatch information. I obviously took it back.

Bij AnandTech is een review online geplaatst van de Leadtek WinFast GeForce 256 SDR kaart met S-Video out. Net als veel van zijn collega's is de Leadtek WinFast gebaseerd op nVidia's reference design. Klein puntje van kritiek is de wat matige cooling waardoor de core niet boven de 130MHz uitkomt.

Due to the fact that the fan and processor are essentially placed on top of one another without the use of any thermal compound, as well as the fact that the GeForce chip is cooled via the rather small and inefficient fan that we see on most reference boards, the Leadtek WinFast GeForce 256 SDR was only able to reach a maximum core speed of 130 MHz and a memory clock speed of 195 MHz. While it may seem that the RAM speed falls short of the 200 MHz it is produced to run at, it is most likely due to a poor yield on the batch of RAM on our specific card. As we have noted in the past, it is very likely that other cards with the EliteMT 5 Ns chips could be pushed higher. The maximum core speed, on the other hand, is not likely to change as long as the fan remains loose on the processor. A GeForce card running at 130/195 is nothing to be ashamed of, as the higher memory speed produces a faster card, but not as fast as some others that can reach higher core speeds as well.

GamePC heeft een vergelijkende review van de IBM Deskstar 34GXP en Quantum Fireball KX neer geplant. Beide schijven hebben een toerental van 7200rpm, de IBM doet het echter met vier keer zoveel cache als de Quantum. Niet geheel onverwacht bleek de IBM dan ook net iets beter te presteren:

The IBM Deskstar did not out perform the Quantum Fireball Plus KX by much. Leaving to understand IBM’s larger buffer advantage does not increase the overall performance by much. Overall, the Fireball Plus stays close behind in many of the tests due to his slightly quicker reading access time. A person may thing, oh .5 MS difference, what a big whoopdee doo but in fact that .5 MS makes up for the lower buffer size and how it can still stay and play with the big boys. Another thing to note is how quite both drives ran when testing the two. Both drives were actually quieter then the case fans. As for heat produced by the two spinning at 7200 RPM’s, the Deskstar did run considerably warmer (which is no surprise since I have the 22GXP and it too runs fairly warm) over the KX. Cooling is probably not needed for both drives, but if data safety is on your priority list, then something like the Bay Cooler or Cool Drive should do just perfectly.

I fired up the system to see what I could get from it. I'm not using a peltier at the moment as I don't want to seal the jacket/chip/slocket assembly up just yet and I don't want to run a peltier in these hot and humid Sydney summer days without decent sealing. I used the Soyo SY6-VBA-133 motherboard, of course, because it can monitor the internal temperature diode of the CPU. Using the same C366 as in my water-cooling and peltier experiments, I was able to run stably at 616MHz @2.2v for an entire day, looping the Unreal flyby with SETI@HOME in the background. This CPU is only capable of 583@2.1 normally with a GlobalWin FDP-32 (big heatsink/fan) on it. The temperature in my room hit a high of 27C during the 8 or 9 hours it was running and the reported on-die temperature was consistently about 9 degrees above ambient. The radiator and the water in the reservoir never felt noticeably warm. The jacket felt slightly warm. I tried it the next day with a C400. It was stable at 630MHz at 2.3v, the ambient temperature was a little warmer, hitting 28.5 degrees in my room for about 2 hours in the middle of the day. Again, the on-die temperature never rose more than 10 above ambient. With the FDP-32, and at 600MHz, this chip usually sits at about 43C.

AGN Hardware heeft een column geschreven over het recente falen van Intel, met als climax de complete stop op de levering van Pentium III processors in de maand februari. Volgens de schrijver heeft Intel vier fatale Fehlers gemacht: het doordrukken van Rambus, de slechte performance van de i820 chipset met SDRAM, de vertraagde release van de i820 chipset en de slechte levering van Coppermine processors:

Years of being at the top with no challenger that could even come close to touching them made them lower their guard. They started to care less for the consumer and instead focused on locking down the microprocessor market. Of course, this meant that their new processors contained less and less innovation. Subsequent processor upgrades where accompanied only by increases in the clock frequency, while containing little in the way of extraordinary new features.

So how did Intel go from being the leader of an industry that everybody was trying to catch up to, to finding themselves lagging behind one of their fiercest rivals? Lots of bad luck, poor judgment, product development problems, and for the first time, a company that actually had better technology than Intel.

Ik fietste gisteren toevallig over de download-site van Corel en daar zag ik dat er eindelijk weer eens een nieuw service pack voor de WP 8 suite uit was in het Nederlands. De laatste daarvoor was Service Pack 4, Corel vond het kennelijk niet nodig om meer te doen aan ons kikkerlandje. Maar goed, SP7 is er dan eindelijk, en volgens de Readme zijn er heel wat dingen verbeterd aan de stabiliteit:

• De instabiliteit die werd veroorzaakt door de macro-opdracht ThirdPartyFindByID is verholpen.
• Er treedt geen probleem meer op tijdens het plakken met OLE-automatisering.
• Er zijn geen wijzigingrechten meer nodig om bestanden op te slaan op een Netware-station.
• De problemen waarbij sommige QuickCorrect-woorden niet worden vervangen als er meerdere gebruikerswoordenlijsten zijn gemarkeerd, zijn opgelost.
• De instabiliteit van de naamconventies voor stijlen is verholpen.
• Bij het vergelijken van documenten worden speciale tekens niet meer verwijderd. Bovendien zijn de resultaten van de vergelijking consistenter.
• Er treedt geen probleem meer op wanneer u tags van de referentielijst verwijdert uit voetnoten.
• Geïmporteerde spreadsheettabellen overschrijden niet meer de rechtermarge.
