Ik lees bij Ace's Hardware dat Hardwarelab.de een aantal vergelijkbare benchmarks heeft gepost van een Athlon, Celeron, K6-III en K6-2 op 400MHz. De tests werden gedraaid op een TNT2 Ultra @ 175/183MHz met de Detonator 3.53 drivers:

De Quake benchmarks maken duidelijk dat Athlon een superieure FPU performance heeft. FPU Mark is een niet bepaald betrouwbare benchmark, wat ook uit de resultaten naar voren komt. Uit eerdere 3D en rendering benchmarks is gebleken dat de Athlon duidelijk sneller is dan de Celeron en PII/PIII (Klamath, Deschutes en Katmai).

De resultaten van de Winstone applicatiebenchmark beloofd veel voor de toekomst: de K6-III heeft duidelijk veel profijt van z'n full speed L2 cache. Als we deze winst ook terugzien in de Thunderbird en Mustang dan zal de Athlon weer een duidelijk performance lead ten opzichte van de Coppermine krijgen.

Een PDA die MP3 aankan is niet nieuw, Compaq had zoiets al langer. Helaas zijn de meeste PDA's voorzien van slechts 16 Mb geheugen, dus daar kan je niet zoveel mee. Samsung doet geen mededelingen over het geheugen.
Maar het ding ziet er inderdaad bijzonder cool uit

AMD heeft meteen gereageerd op de opmerkingen van Dell dat AMD-producten niet goed genoeg zouden zijn voor Dell-klanten. Verder is er commentaar van analisten. Men zegt dat het probleem van AMD niet zozeer de processor zelf is, maar de chipset en het beperkte aantal ontwerpen. Je kunt maar één type Athlon kiezen, terwijl er van vrijwel elke Pentium III meerdere versies bestaan. (wederom, thanx Arjan voor de tip!)

AMD and Analysts respond to Michael Dell's comments on AMD architecture

In an interview Thursday, Michael Dell spoke of fragility within "the AMD environment" that could undermine the integrity of his company's brand. Speaking specifically about the work his engineers had done with the Athlon processor, Dell said reliability was utmost on his mind and that his customers demanded reliable systems. AMD, he said, could not offer that reliability.

Keith Diefendorff, Editor in Chief of the internationally renowned Microprocessor Report, told ZDNet Thursday night that as far as he was aware there were "no concerns about compatibility with the Athlon" that he had heard of, but he knew there were concerns over the chipsets for the Athlon range. "The chipset thing is AMD's biggest issue" said Diefendorff, "although they don't see it that way.

"The problem for AMD is that the PC industry is changing: new memory systems, new techniques etc. and Intel has a lot of people working to design the latest and best chipsets and, more importantly, it comes out with lots of designs. With AMD there is a limited choice."

Asked whether he thought Dell's comments would have a negative affect on AMD's perception in the PC arena he said: "Actually no, I don't. However I do think it illustrates clearly a point about AMD and the problems it has faced in the past. AMD has always had a very hard time breaking into the corporate arena... And that has a lot to do with Intel's position in this market: it's big, it's able to deal with problems better in the minds of the corporates. I think what's important here is that AMD continues to deliver products that are good and reliable." Diefendorff recently awarded AMD's Athlon with the prestigious MDR microprocessor of the year award.

In the past Dell has said AMD's inability to deliver the goods was the problem, but incompatibility is the main concern, ZDNet Editor, Richard Barry, reports Dell, the world's leading PC manufacturer, finally ended the debate regarding its choice of microprocessors Thursday when CEO, Michael Dell, outlined his concerns over AMD's microprocessors.

In an interview held in London, Dell told ZDNet UK News that although AMD was making good progress with its processor range, the technology it offered "was too fragile" for Dell customers. Asked if by 'too fragile' he meant there were incompatibility issues with AMD architecture Dell said, "Yes, and that's vital."

Describing some of his customers as being at the "lunatic fringe" of computer use -- those users who are happy to remove and replace peripherals such as sound or video cards -- Dell said: "We found the AMD environment to be much more fragile... than equivalent Intel systems." He went on, "These are system issues that underlie the integrity of our own brand."

The comments are damaging to AMD which has invested much time and effort in building up the Athlon brand. But Dell did not stop there. Fielding questions about his company's long term allegiance to Intel, he went on, "I don't give a whatever about whose chip I use... what matters to us is that we deliver to our customers something that is reliable and it's not just the processor. The chipset is just as important and that needs to be addressed (by AMD)."

The console game arena is big business. PlayStation game console sales, for example, currently exceed 60 million units per year. In hopes of building on that base, Sony will be launching its long-awaited PlayStation2 "computer entertainment system" in the U.S. this fall, following a March 4 launch in Japan — and it features a version of Linux as its OS.

According to Sony, PlayStation2 will combine movies, games, music, and Net access in one console, and is expecting to ship one million units in the first week. The system will support both audio CD and DVD-video formats, and will even be backward-compatible with the original PlayStation. The unit is expected to have more graphics power than PCs and to cost less, as well.

The lack of licensing fees and large numbers of Linux developers were, in part, what convinced Sony to use Linux in Playstation2. And since then, Linux has been encroaching on territory that Microsoft hoped to own with its grand plans for family entertainment.

Ace's Hardware heeft uit "betrouwbare bron" de specificaties van de Asus K7V-RM vernomen. Het blijkt dat het bordje op Micro-ATX formaat is en derhalve niet meer dan 3 PCI-slots en 3 DIMM-sockets kan bevatten. ISA slots zitten er al helemaal niet op.
