Bluescreenofdeth (hoe komen ze op die namen ) brengt ons een kleine vergelijking van een aantal 80mm fans. Getest worden fans van Delta, Evercool, Sunon, Thermaltake en YSTech, allen met 3-pins connectors. Deze worden met behulp van een 80mm / 60mm fan converter op een heatsink gemonteerd waarna ze de standaard 'hoe test ik een heatsink'-behandeling ondergaan .

De Delta komt (niet verrassend) als beste uit de test, gevolgd door de Thermaltake. De Evercool heeft moeite, in de woorden van de reviewer, rond te draaien :

"I NEED peformance, nothing else matters; who cares if i'm permenantly deafened or the neighbours complain about the noise.....PEFORMANCE!"

Go for the Delta 'Focused Flow' model then - this is about as good as performance gets in a 80mm fan, and you can save yourself getting a sound card - you woundn't be able to hear it anyway with noise levels competing with those of the 135CFM YSTech 120mmonster.

"I'm looking for a crappy fan that barely turns round and wouldn't be noticed by a tiny amoeba. It would be good if it also fairly unreliable so that my processor overheated every time it failed."

The Evercool 'Low Noise' model excells in this catagory, although the 'Unreliable' is only it's reputation, i have not tested this. However, given this i would not suggest using it on a processor, which is pretty much deaded if the fan fails.

JAMF stuurde ons richting een aantal reviews over de Nanotherm Ice & Blue koelprut. Deze koelprut is ontworpen als concurrent voor Arctic Silver en heeft als basis microscopische deeltjes keramisch materiaal. Het verschil tussen de Nanotherm Ice en de Nanotherm Blue is de kleur; de eerste is grijs en de laatste blauw. In de testen blijkt de pasta prima te presteren. In de meeste gevallen geeft Arctic Silver de beste temperatuur, maar de verschillen zijn erg klein. Al met al een prima alternatief volgens het merendeel van de reviewers:

From the clean non-smearing NanoTherm to its ability to keep up with the higher priced ASII, this may be the next big thing. Price is definitely an issue in my book. If you only plan to install one or two CPUs in your lifetime, purchasing a whole tube of thermal paste at a high price is not economical. With Nanotherm coming in about $5, many people may actually consider this as opposed to the common Radio Shack white goop. And considering the size of the tube you receive, this turns out to be the best bargain thus far. (Gideon Tech)

The Nanotherm is interesting and effective technology, especially for a non-silver based product. This idea of "Nanocomposite" materials and a thermally conductive filler matrix may sound a little farfetched but it performs as well as the original Arctic Silver and isn't far off the latest revision of the paste. Op de site van The Register staat dat er een nieuwe eis is in de rechtszaak tussen Hewlett-Packard en de Duitse platenmaatschappijen. Nadat in juni de onderhandelingen over een vaste afdracht voor iedere in de toekomst verkochte CD-recorder doodliepen, heeft de aanklager geëist dat HP nu alsnog rechten betaalt over iedere CD-recorder die HP de afgelopen drieëenhalf jaar heeft verkocht. De eerste stap in die eis is dat HP van de rechtbank de opdracht heeft gekregen aan te geven hoeveel CD-recorders ze in die periode heeft verkocht.

The case centred on the use of CD recording equipment to duplicate music CDs. Germany levies a per-unit fee on other types of recording equipment, and the music industry wanted computer-based drives to be included too.

However, HP has clearly since decided it doesn't want to pay up. It was sued again in June this year after negotiations to set the levy broke down.

Bij 3dXtreme is een review verschenen van de SIS 315 reference videokaart. De kaart beschikt over 32MB 166MHz SDRAM (maximaal 128MB) en de chip is eveneens op 166MHz geklokt. De kaart onderteunt AGP 4x en beschikt over een MPEG 1 en 2 decoder. Wat betreft de resultaten scoort de SIS 315 kaart in benchmarks toch wel een stuk lager dan de Geforce2 MX400. De kaart is getest op een 600MHz Pentium III, maar uit officiële benchmarks op een 1000Mhz Athlon Thunderbird blijkt dat een snellere CPU weinig invloed heeft op de prestaties van de referencekaart. Op de website van SIS wordt vermeldt dat de SIS 315 chipset Hyper FSAA ondersteunt maar in de meegeleverde drivers is die optie nog niet terug te vinden. Hieronder nog een stukje uit de conclusie:

mdheijer wees ons op het feit dat Creative Labs de roadmap heeft vrijgegeven wanneer de langverwachte Windows XP drivers worden gereleased. Je kunt je abonneren op een emailservice die je vertelt wanneer een specifieke driver is gereleased. Alle soundcards gebaseerd op de Ensoniq CT5880 (zoals de PCI 16 en de PCI 128), de Sound Blaster Live! serie en de nieuwe Audigy kaart worden voorzien van nieuwe Windows XP drivers. Alle overige kaarten moeten het doen met de drivers die al worden meegeleverd bij Windows XP. Het is te hopen dat Creative niet alleen de drivers van een nieuw jasje voorziet maar ze ook daadwerkelijk heeft geupdate.

The Carmel Group - een media onderzoek bedrijf - verwacht dat wereldwijd gezien het aantal mobiele telefoons in 2006 groter zal zijn dan het aantal vaste lijnen, meldt IDG.net. Met Azië en Europa als koplopers in het adopteren van draadloze technologie, zullen er rond 2006 zo'n 1,6 miljard mobiele abonnees zijn, tegen slechts 963 miljoen vaste telefoonlijn klanten. De verschuiving naar een intensiever gebruik van mobiele toestellen kan de productiviteit van werknemers verder doen toenemen, omdat men dan vrijwel onmiddelijk toegang heeft tot allerlei vormen van informatie, ongeacht waar men zich bevindt, zei Jimmy Schaeffler - voorzitter en CEO van The Carmel Group. Maar om deze toename van snel beschikbare informatie efficiënt te kunnen benutten, zullen gebruikers nieuwe methodes moeten aanleren, waarschuwt hij. Het besluitvormingsproces zelf wordt door de toename van mobiele technologie niet zomaar verbeterd:

"The increase in cellular technology will not contribute to improving the decision-making process," Schaeffler said. "It may help people access more data, but it does not help in analyzing and synthesizing data."

As the mobile telecommunication industry expands, the current world order in the industry is not likely to change, Schaeffler said. Countries such as Korea, Japan and China are likely to maintain their places as leading makers of cellular hardware and profit from their position accordingly. Similarly, European cellular phone makers that have shown a talent for advancing wireless technology capabilities such as boosting data transfer speeds should witness a boon to their bottom lines as well.

schumache stuurde ons door naar Envy news, waar men de nieuwste draadloze optische muis van Logitech reviewt. De Logitech Cordless Optical Mouse [waarom lijken al die productnamen van Logitech toch zo sterk op elkaar? -ed.] is weer nét even anders, dan de al eerder dit jaar verschenen Cordless Mouseman Optical. Twee verschillen springen het meest in het oog; Een prijs die een stuk lager ligt - de Cordless Optical Mouse heeft een adviesprijs van $49,95 - en een symmetrische vormgeving, waardoor de muis zowel links- als rechtshandig te bedienen is. De muis heeft een meer zilverkleurige behuizing, is met 131 gram ietsje lichter dan zijn oudere broertje en heeft volgens de reviewer een prettig in de hand liggende vormgeving.

Deze muis vertoonde echter nog steeds hetzelfde kwaaltje, bij snelle horizontale bewegingen, die de Cordless MouseMan Optical voorheen ookal vertoonde. Ook op een witte ondergrond hadden beide draadloze optische muizen last van een lichte 'vertraging'. Iets waar de optische muis mét staart geen last van had, aldus de reviewer. Hij wijst in dat verband suggestief naar de 3V/100mA LED in de draadloze modellen, ten opzichte van de 5V/100mA LED in het model mét staart:

As for operating system and platform compatibility, this one's a real champ. The Cordless Optical Mouse works in DOS, Windows 3.1, Win95, 98, 98se, ME, NT, 2000 Pro, and Mac OS 8.6 right through to v9.2.1. As far as 'advanced OS support' goes, it works flawlessly on Windows XP Pro build 2600 and Mac OS X 10.0.4.

The only other issue that bothers me with it is that the mouse buttons could be a bit wider towards the front of the mouse. My large hands cause my index and fore fingers to spread apart enough that the second mouse button is a bit too narrow for my taste. However, as with the previous Cordless MouseMan, this newer one has been widened.

Due to its digital radio technology, the mouse has an optimal range of six feet. It's low-power micro-controller unit and LED Emitter design helps to extend 'AA' battery life to three months based on typical computer use (as decreed by Logitech through studies, I'm sure). Logitech was kind enough to include a USB-to-PS/2 gender bender for those that prefer to use a PS/2 port. The Digital-RF Transceiver is the same C-BA4-MSE model as the previous Cordless MouseMan Optical and has a 4-foot cable length. As with the older sibling, Logitech kept the same 800 DPI resolution. Perhaps at a later time when the technology and energy efficiency is improved, Logitech will offer a 1200 or 1600 DPI mouse - but for now, that is all that can be done to make the product viable and reliable today. To top it all off, this rodent comes with a 5-year warranty.
