GA-Hardware heeft een review in elkaar gedraaid van de Creative Labs Nomad II 32MB, een mp3-speler met aan-boord FM radio. De reviewer is errug enthousiast over dit dingetje, en dan vooral over zijn features: voice-recording, radio, optioneel docking station en afstandsbediening. Ook ontvangt dit MP3-spelertje van hen een wopping 95% voor de geluidskwaliteit. Vooral de goede koptelefoon zorgde hiervoor:

MP3 music performance was very nice on the player. The headphone quality was better than the ones included with most other players, even if they do look rather odd. Most players come with the "earbud" style headphones, while the Nomad II has bigger sized headphones. They are an unusual style which is hard to describe if you haven't seen it. The headphone pads sit on your ears, and the plastic rails go over and around your ears, and around the back of your head. The only downside to this design is that you might have problems wearing certain sunglasses while wearing these, but it worked fine with the ones I normally wear.

One particularly nice thing about having larger sized headphones was that they definitely gave better bass response than any earbud set I have listened to. This combined with the DSP settings (as well as manual bass and treble control) really gave a good sound. Also they tended to do a little better job blocking outside sound. Depending on your personal feelings, this could be a plus or a minus. I appreciated it, as it widens where you can use the player. Even at the loudest volume settings, no MP3 player is really all that loud, so blocking some outside noise helps you hear the music better.

Op het moment staan de eerste 9 pagina's online. Hieronder een klein stukje over de kaart zelf, waarbij de lengte natuurlijk weer eens een probleem was. Als ander minpuntje noemt EH de afwezigheid van een manier om de kaart met een TV te verbinden, iets wat met DVD-films natuurlijk wel handig is.

The first thing that hit me about the Voodoo5 5500 is its size. At 9.75 inches long by 4 inches wide, it’s definitely the longest AGP card I’ve ever had my hands on. For comparison, a generic GeForce 256 card weighs in at 6.5 inches by 4 inches. I installed the Voodoo5 5500 in several reference cases and it fit in all of them, but not without a few issues. In professional cases like the Tornado 1000, the extra width allowed the Voodoo5 5500 to fit without a problem. Standard cases also have the necessary room, but you will find the Voodoo5 5500 sitting rather snugly against the 3.5" tray, as well as very close to the IDE cables.

One area that was quite surprising is the dearth of external video features on the Voodoo5 5500. With only an external VGA connector on the backplate, it in many ways resembles the entry-level Voodoo3 2000. After the V3 3000 and 3500 models, it’s sort of a letdown that the Voodoo5 5500 doesn’t even have a S-video or RCA connector for external TV output. Although the gamers who made use of an external TV might be low, the emergence of DVD-ROM as an entertainment medium has led to many home users simply attaching their PC to a television to watch DVD movies.

Ace's Hardware heeft een roundup tussen 4 videokaarten online gezet, te weten de TNT2, de GeForce DDR, de GeForce2 en de Voodoo5 5500. Ze concluderen het volgende: de GeForce DDR heeft de beste prijs/performance verhouding, de GeForce 2 de beste performance en de Voodoo5 is gewoon niet goed genoeg:

The Voodoo 5500 is built on innovative technology and proves that 3DFx has no intention to stop fighting in the gamer's video card market. Two sample FSAA is a very desirable feature for "adventure" and RPG games, and the Voodoo 5500 is strong enough to offer high framerates along with 2-sample FSAA.

Nevertheless, we feel that the Voodoo 5500 lacks a bit of power. It is priced as high as a geforce 2 GTS card, but it performs like a Geforce DDR, which costs up to 25% less. It offers beautiful 4 sample FSAA, but at frame rates which are (too) low. 3DFX has to solve three major problems before the Voodoo 5500 can seduce us:

3DFx should offer much better 3DNow! optimizations. Until then, we can only advise it to owners of high clocked PIII system.

3DFx should use a better process to manufacture the VSA chip. The VSA chip is less complex than the Geforce 2 and should run at (at least) the same speed as the Geforce 2 GTS. A voodoo 5500 at 200 MHz should have the power to run 4-sample FSAA at decent speeds, and would be able to compete with the Geforce 2GTS.

3DFX should lower the price of the V5500.

In our humble opinion, solutions based on the Savage 2000 or Geforce DDR offer a much better price/performance ratio. Competition between the different Geforce 2 GTS based videocard manufacturers will drive the price of those cards down, as witnessed by the price of the SUMA Geforce 2 GTS. We are excited to see that the battle for the video chip supremacy has started again. From here on out it can only get better...[break]Ace's Hardware heeft ook nog wat interessante benchmarks bij hun roundup gezet die goed illustreren dat TnL ook met een high-end CPU geen overbodige luxe is. In DMZG is de Voodoo5 namelijk evensnel in 640x480x16 als in 1024x786x32, iets wat maar een ding kan betekenen: de CPU is de limiterende factor:[/break]The Voodoo 5 wins the FSAA battle with a small advantage over the Geforce family. What about games with high polygon counts? FSAA is cool, but blocky monsters with FSAA are nothing more than smooth lined ... blocky monsters. Look at the dragon's wings in the previous screenshots. So, is the lack of a T&L unit a real problem for the Voodoo 5500? It should not be that way as we have tested the Voodoo 5500 with a very powerful CPU, the New Athlon 800. We used the Dagoth More Zoological Garden demo. This test should be considered "the worst case performance" for non-T&L cards, as the demo, which is based on a real game engine, is optimized for (nVidia's) T&L capable videocards.

Een groep Europese Linux-bedrijven stuurde vandaag naar British Telecom een brief om de telco te feliciteren met de recente claim dat het een patent bezit op hyperlinks. De EuroLinux Consortium, waar ook SuSE en Mandrake lid van zijn, vindt de actie van BT een goede zaak: het bedrijf verdient complimenten voor "het verschaffen van briljant bewijs dat software patenten absurd zijn."

Een paar dagen geleden schreef de Britse telecomoperator ISP's en bedrijven in de Verenigde Staten aan om hen een licentie op het gebruik van hyperlinks aan te bieden. De operator beweert dankzij een patent dat het in de jaren zeventig deponeerde eigenaar te zijn van de technologie.

Niet verrassend is British Telecom door de internetgemeenschap zwaar onder vuur genomen vanwege z'n claim. Het gaat hier niet alleen over het specifieke patent, maar ook over de bredere kwestie van softwarepatenten. In de V.S. kan je een patent nemen op software - de EU volgt vooralsnog niet deze trend - wat volgens tegenstanders een complete miskenning van het concept is. Patenten dienden oorspronkelijk om uitvindingen te beschermen, maar sinds geruime tijd worden in de Verenigde Staten ook vrij vage, abstracte ideeën aanvaard als onderwerp. Het gevolg is dat vele IT-bedrijven jaarlijks duizenden aanvragen indienen en dikwijls beschikken over reusachtige bibliotheken waar talloze patenten stof vergaren, voor het geval een andere partij een gelijkaardig idee zou uitwerken. De bedoeling is dan eerder achteraf geld te verdienen via een rechtzaak of licentie, dan wel het patent om te zetten naar een product.

De Duitse IT site Tec Channel wist prijzen van een aantal Itanium en Willamette modellen van de straat te rapen. De Itanium prijzen zijn op zich geen geheim meer, aangezien deze al enkele maanden worden genoemd in de roadmapjes die Intel aan zijn channel partners rondstuurt (die dingen zijn overigens niet bedoeld voor publieke consumptie, maar uiteraard lekt er altijd wel eentje uit ).

De Willamette prijzen zijn wel erg interessant aangezien hier tot op heden weinig informatie over bekend was. De cijfers die Tec Channel heeft gehoord zijn 795 dollar voor de 1,3GHz versie en $895 voor de exemplaren die van Intel op 1,4GHz mogen draaien. Goedkoop worden de Willies dus zeker niet, maar dat is iets wat mijn teddybeer vijftien jaar geleden ook al had kunnen voorspellen...

Intel will für den Pentium III-Nachfolger Willamette mit 1,4 GHz laut tecChannel vorliegenden Informationen 895 US-Dollar von den Herstellern verlangen. Der Itanium mit seiner 64-Bit-Architektur soll in der 800 MHz Version mit vier MByte Cache 4227 US-Dollar kosten.

Der Willamette startet laut einer tecChannel vorliegenden Roadmap in zwei Varianten: Mit 1,4 GHz und 400 MHz FSB und mit 1,3 GHz/400 MHz FSB. Die 1,3-GHz-Variante kostet in tausender Stückzahlen 795 US-Dollar. Mit der Auslieferung an die Hersteller dürfte im Oktober zu rechnen sein. Intel nennt kein exaktes Datum. Die technischen Details des Pentium-III-Nachfolgers mit dem Codenamen Willamette liefert ein tecChannel-Report.

Nadat AMD had aangekondigd te willen overstappen van Slot A naar Socket A was het even wachten op de eerste slotkets zoals we die van Intel processoren kennen. Het duitste bedrijf NMC-PE is de eerste die met een AMD slotket op de markt komt. Het stuk hieronder is met Babelfish even van het orgineel (brak) vertaald naar het Engels:
