GamePC legde 5 GeForce kaarten op elkaar en vroeg zich af welke de beste was. Onder de kandidaten bevinden zich de Guillemot 3D Prophet, VisionTek GeForce 256 (ken ik niet), Asus V6600 Deluxe, Creative Labs Annihilator en Hercules 3D Prophet DDR-DVI:

We would have liked to see a custom designed DDR board, but Guillemot and Creative have been in a race to see which company could get their DDR board out first, and such didn't decide to take time to design the boards themselves. Nvidia is riding out the millenium in style, and on top. We would have loved to seen some new 3dfx and S3 parts by the season's end, but the forces that be have allowed Nvidia to be the only game in town. This is just the tip of the iceberg for the GeForce chipset, remember how many TNT2 cards came out within the last year? Expect twice that with the GeForce, every company in the world will put out SDR and DDR GeForce cards, and why not? It's a fantastic chip which is being well received worldwide, it's just too bad Nvidia pegged it with such an annoying name.

Officially known as the "Athlon Ultra", Mustang is a Copper .18micron part with up to a 2MB, on-die L2 cache. Because Mustang is a server part, it must have lots of bandwidth. Thus Mustang will support a 133MHz DDR FSB (effectivly 266Mhz) and 400MHz DDR RDRAM delivering 2.1GB of available bandwidth. It has been commolny thought that VIA's KX133 would be the chipset to use with Mustang, but it was reported today by Ace's Hardware that the KX133 does infact not support a 133MHz DDR FSB, leaving the AMD760 as the only chipset capable of running Mustang.

When copying large files, throughput is the most important statistic. There is a lot of confusion about throughput of a drive. Here, throughput will refer to the internal transfer rate of the hard drive, the amount of data which the disk head can read into its cache per unit time.

In math terms, throughput is (rpm * 60 * density * 512 ) / 1 MB, where density is usually replaced by sectors-per-track, rpm refers to the spindle speed in RPM (i.e. is it a 5400RPM, 7200RPM, or what have you speed drive) and 1 MB is whatever unit of size you want, i.e. if you want how many real MB/sec can be transferred, we use 1,048,576bytes. We'll use 1,000,000bytes to simplify calculations.

One problem with this is that there is usually more sectors on the outer tracks than the inner tracks, because they are longer. Drives which employ this technique are said to use Zoned Bit Recording, or ZBR, and encompasses almost all new drives. The problem with this is that throughput varies drastically depending on the track used to record the data on. The reason it is called zoned bit recording has to do with the way tracks are arranged. Since there are many tracks on a drive with little space in between them, the efficiency loss is marginal if instead of optimizing the number of sectors for each track, which is difficult, to group together a certain number of tracks and then, for each track in this grouping, or zone, use a set number of sectors per track. The number of zones may vary from drive to drive. The Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 has 16 zones.

It is also important to note that throughput does not take into consideration fragmentation and track switch times. That stuff is encompassed in seek time. Therefore, while throughput is, in my opinion, a more useful statistic than seek time, both are essential to accurately estimate performance on specific types of data.

The speeds of today's processors are insane. Remember a Pentium 90? A 486? If you do, the latest Athlon 750 and Coppermine 733, manufactured at .18 microns seems like they belong in a science fiction novel and not in my Dell. Intel's first processor, the 4004 was almost archaic when compared to today's processors. It contained a measly 2300 transistors. Thirty years later, most processors have 5 œ million transistors and calculate millions of operations per second. With little competition, Intel managed to rapidly advance clock speeds and move the computing world to new heights and new capabilities. In February of 1992 a small company (relative to Intel) called Advanced Micro Devices ended a five year arbitration process with Intel, allowing them full rights to make and sell all Am386 processors. Then in March 1 of 1994 AMD won a lawsuit gaining them rights to Intel's 287-math coprocessor microcode. AMD would become Intel's toughest competition in years.

Game performance with the MS Gamepad Pro is very good, but not exceptional. Most of the issues arise from the unit’s D-Pad, which at times can be irritatingly hard to control. The Gravis Xterminator featured a separate D-Pad for both proportional and digital control, while the MS Gamepad Pro uses a single D-Pad for both duties. The design concessions in going this route are very evident and are such that the Gamepad Pro doesn’t really excel in either setting, and can be quite difficult to control in proportional mode. The Gamepad Pro’s D-Pad is functional, but its short range of motion does take a bit of getting used to. On the other hand, button placement is excellent and they have a nice tactile feel and give excellent response in high-speed action games. The MS Gamepad Pro’s trigger buttons are also very well designed and have large indentations to prevent finger slippage. Once I got a handle on the unit’s D-Pad, the MS Gamepad Pro performed very well in a variety of digital games, but fell short in most space sims and racing games, where excellent proportional support is a prerequisite.

Planet Multimedia bericht dat er weer een topman bij Microsoft is opgestapt. Greg Maffei verruilt zijn positie van chief financial officer bij Microsoft voor een job bij telecomtoko Worlwide Fiber, waar hij opperhoofd wordt:

BassaB schrijft: "Gisteren kwamen we volgens een onderzoek van International Monitoring nog goed uit de test. BSB Consulting zegt nu in een rapport dat de landen met een goede Y2K voorbereiding toch veel last van het millenniumprobleem zullen ondervinden. Dat wordt dus toch wel hamsteren ":

Ondanks de gigantische investeringen in oplossingen voor het Y2K-probleem zegt een nieuw rapport van BSC Consulting dat de overgang naar 2000 verre van vlekkeloos zal verlopen. Volgens hen ligt het probleem bij de verbindingen met andere landen. Anders gezegd, ook al heeft een land alle mogelijke voorbereidingen getroffen, dan zullen er toch infrastructurele problemen optreden omdat bijvoorbeeld een buurland dit niet heeft gedaan. Zo zouden er zogenaamde 'knock-on' effecten kunnen ontstaan, waardoor kleinere problemen groter worden.

Ace's Hardware heeft van bronnen bij Intel vernomen dat er problemen zijn met de trace-cache van de Willamette / Pentium IV. Verder zouden de op dit moment bereikte kloksnelheden erg laag zijn en zou het chippie vol bugs zitten:

Sources of ours told us today that Intel seems to be experiencing problems with the trace-cache in Intel's upcoming Pentium IV. The CPU taped out last month (November '99), 5 months later than planned.

Intel's 7th generation CPU seems to be reaching very low clock-speeds at this point in time. On top of that, Intel's engineers still have to sort out a lot of bugs. The Pentium IV does not seem to work properly right now ("they still don't have enough bugs out of it to sample it").

Our sources at Intel did not want to comment on this rumour, but they admitted that "Pentium IV is an extremely advanced design but is unfortunately not on schedule". I personally hope Intel engineers will sort it out on time, because it would unbelievably interesting to compare the Pentium IV and the Athlon Mustang clock for clock and see what technically makes them better or worse than their competitor (I am drooling here).

In fact, TNT2 Ultra and TNT2 Pro chipsets make up about a third of nVidia's overall production line.

De Power Gamerz hebben een review van de 40,8Gb dikke Maxtor DiamondMax Plus ATA66 schijf neer gelegd. De drive heeft een rotatiesnelheid van slechts 5400rpm, maar blijkt desondanks wat betreft performance voor te liggen op een 7200rpm Western Digital (= IBM) schijf:

Heat and noise were very low in this drive. At over 10 gigs a platter, I expected the noise level to be much higher, but even the sound of my case fan was able to knock out any sound the drive creates. As for heat, it performed very good, staying cool and not even getting extremely hot after the extended testing of the benchmarks. Still, a good HD fan is a valuable accessory for the peace of mind we are need with our expensive computer equipment.

Een 19-jarige student aan de KUL werd gisteren voor de Antwerpse rechtbank van eerste aanleg veroordeeld voor het op zijn website aanbieden van links naar MP3-bestanden. De site moet onherroepelijk dicht. Dit is de eerste maal dat er in België iemand een veroordeling oploopt voor het beschikken over illegale bestanden op een website. Ook het linken naar illegale bestanden die niet op de site staan, mag niet. De Antwerpse student W.B. had op zijn site 25.000 links naar MP3's. Lokaal stonden geen illegale bestanden. Initieel was de website gehost op een server van de KU Leuven, maar na een klacht van de Belgische afdeling van de International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), werd hij door de universiteit verwijderd.

Volgens IFPI was de site binnen de vier dagen terug on line, ditmaal op een server in de VS. De organisatie besloot toen gerechtelijke stappen tegen de man te ondernemen in de vorm van een kortgeding. Juist omdat het hier een kortgeding betreft, moet een uitspraak ten gronde nog volgen na een vordering van schadevergoeding door IFPI.

insane kwam aanwandelen met dit artikel van EBN Online. Intel blijkt geen trek te hebben in een tweede Rampbus fiasco en heeft met vijf belangrijke DRAM fabrikanten een alliantie bijeen geveegd, die moet leiden tot het de totstandkoming van een next-generation DRAM architectuur. Ergens in 2002-2003 zal deze standaard de huidige DDR SDRAM technologie opvolgen:

The partners include Hyundai MicroElectronics, Infineon Technologies, Micron Technology, the new NEC-Hitachi Memory combine, and Samsung Electronics, which together comprise more than 80% of the global DRAM market.

Sources said Intel wants early participation from memory makers to help define the DRAM architecture that will succeed DDR-2, an interface that is expected to replace DDR SDRAM sometime in 2002 or 2003. The follow-on technology, which Intel is referring to as Next-Generation DRAM, is slated to enter the market in 2004 or 2005, sources said.

CyberJunk86 stuurde dit nieuwsberichtje van Nu.nl, meer meer info over de ellende die A2000 powers met de migratie naar Chello over zich heen gekieperd krijgen:

Zo zou Chello concrete plannen hebben om de upstream snelheid voor de Internet-gebruikers te verlagen naar 128 kilobit/seconde, waardoor het versturen van mail, surfen, downloaden, ICQ en het posten in nieuwsgroepen, aanzienlijk vertraagd zou worden. Ook zouden de abonnees nieuwe, minder duidelijke, email-adressen krijgen, die door UPC zonder inbreng van de gebruiker worden gegenereerd. Voorts is de Avgk verbolgen over de communicatie met UPC/chello. Eind deze week krijgen alle A2000 Power abonnees een brief van UPC/Chello waarin de migratie wordt aangekondigd. Zij worden voor de keuze gesteld: overgaan naar Chello en minder 'waar' voor hetzelfde geld of opzeggen en het kabelmodem inleveren."

De Agvk vermoedt dat individuele abonnees naar de rechter zullen stappen wegen wanprestatie/contractbreuk. Ook de Agvk zelf sluit een gang naar de rechter niet uit.

Hilko schrijft: "Speciaal voor de systemen die in kleine kasten worden ingebouwd (lees: zeer kleine desktopjes) is er een nieuwe specificatie voor PCI sloten gedefinieerd. Bij deze spec is het slot lager uitgevoerd, zodat de kaarten rechtop in de kast ingebouwd kunnen worden. PCI Special Interest Group announced that Low Profile PCI, a new, shorter PCI card form factor definition, has been released to the PCI SIG membership for member review. Low Profile PCI is a standard for shorter-height cards with the same as PCI v2.2 electrical characteristics, functionality, PC signals and software drivers. This standard may simplify the system design (and decrease overall cost) by eliminating the need for a riser card in many low profile/thin systems.

Firingsquad heeft een review neer gemikt van de Soyo 6BA+IV, inmiddels al weer de vierde incarnatie van Soyo's 440BX plank. Het bord heeft 4 DIMM slots, 5xPCI, 2xISA, onboard ATA66 controller en een jumperless CPU setup met keuze uit een brede sloot van 28 busspeeds. De resultaten die Firingsquad met een PIII-500E boekte waren desondanks teleurstellend:

Since the 6BA+IV supports Intel's Coppermine processor, we next installed our trusty 500E and IWILL Slocket II for overclocking tests. In previous tests we were able to clock our 500E to 620MHz (5x124) and assumed we'd get similar results with the 6BA+IV. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case, as the system hung during POST regardless of CPU voltage.

Disappointed, we next dialed in the next lowest setting, 122MHz. With a fixed multiplier of 5.0 and the front side bus set to 122MHz, our system ran fine. We encountered no problems while testing at the 610MHz 122x5 offers.

Remember, overclocking is by no means a science, perhaps our 6BA+IV wasn't the sharpest unit off Soyo's lot. Just because the 500E overclocked 10MHz better on another board doesn't mean a different 6BA+IV would perform the same.

PG: On the subject of anti-aliasing support, it was mentioned during a recent chat with Bjorn's 3D World that NVIDIA will be adding support in it's spring release drivers. Will this be full-scene anti-aliasing (similar to that being p1mped by 3dfx lately) or a different technique? What type of speed hit are we likely to see when enabled AA in applications/games on the GeForce (and NV15)?

MH: Our implementation of AA will be full-scene with various levels of sampling. This will let the user control frame rate and quality. AA is a pixel-bandwidth killer no matter the configuration. So you can either add more hardware and rack up the cost, or go down in resolution to maintain frame rate. There is no exact answer since some of it will also depend on the application (i.e. amount of multitexturing, etc.). I think the sweet spot for AA for next year will be 800 x 600 x 32 @ 60fps AA. That's going to look sweet!

Trouwens, over AA: ik heb gisteren een leuk CD'tje van 3dfx binnengekregen met een aantal AA screenshots. Die ga ik binnenkort in een artikeltje neerplanten.

Hardware One heeft een review gepost van de PlexWriter 8/4/32A, de eerste Plextor writer die op de ordinaire ATAPI interface werkt. De drive blijkt prima te werken, alleen de hoge CPU utilization kan een nadeel zijn:

Well, having taken the PX-W8432Ti for a test-spin, I must say that I have no qualms recommending the drive at all. From a practical perspective, the only physical benchmarks that had me concerned were the anomalous transfer speeds (probably due to some erroneous setting hopefully) and the high CPU utilization (which is probably representative of most IDE drives). In any case, the former isn’t that important unless you’re planning to use the drive for regular CD-ROM reading as well (not advisable as CD-R/RW drives have typically shorter MTBFs than plain CD-ROMs). Similarly, unless you plan to do some serious processor crunching jobs whilst writing, I don’t believe the CPU utilization is that big a deal afterall. Furthermore, my experience showed that the drive still manages to cope just fine (esp with its 4MB buffer) and usage doesn’t bog down drastically.

In terms of practical writing capabilities and speeds, it excels and performs up to par expected of Plextor drives. However, admittedly I do not have experience yet with other upcoming CD-RW drives from competitors to do a detailed comparison.
