After setting the jumpers, I plugged it into my trusty Abit BH6. It came up without a hitch, and worked flawlessly. Now for the big test - I set the bus speed to 133mhz and held my breath. Again, it worked flawlessly. This is a big deal, since many slockets have problems with 133mhz bus speeds.

JC heeft een artikeltje geschreven over de processors die VIA / Cyrix komend jaar zal introduceren. Allereerst Joshua, een gefacelifte 6x86 met 256Kb L2 on-die cache, verbeterde floating point unit (dat was heel hard nodig) en 3DNow!:

Okay, there's one bit that might really, really tick you off. The Joshua (I'm making an effort to call it "Jedi" when referring to the core and "Joshua" when referring to the marketed product) will not be released at 433MHz. It is, essentially at heart, a 6x86 on a better process. And the process it is using is still rather crappy compared to the current processes of the two competing chipmakers in this market (I think they're still fabbing on NSM's grounds, and they're perhaps moving over eventually to TSMC -- either way, the 180nm process there is a bit subpar to say the least).

The Joshua will be released at a speed rating of 433, which I believe equates to 300MHz. I cannot prove this -- I'm kicking myself in the head (ow) because I can't find that dang PDF from a month or two ago. Okay, I did copy down the information, you can check it out here. The last bit of that news entry is what I'm talking about. This was info that was sent only to first level customers -- board makers and such. They have to be given accurate information in order for their products to be compatible, and given VIA's roadmap it is not very likely that the Joshua will be ever sold at frequencies out of that MHz range. I am sure about AMDs ability to produce multi processor and 64 bit in time based on the allies AMD has. Compact is an excellent ally, and this alliance will continue since AMD supplies chipsets and LDT technology to DEC Alpha. DEC is hepling AMD produce a 64 bit processor, and motorolas agreement to share technology means that AMD may gain access to the design for the extremly fast cach in the G4s, the SIMD instructions in the Velocity engine, the software concept in Alti-Vec, and a way of producing 128 bit CPUs like the G4.

We suspect that Abit has briefed OEMs on it, and barring any delays, the CH6 and CX6 should probably hit stores either this month or early in January. The CH6 will have ATA66 support, 3 DIMM sockets, AC'97 Audio, SoftMenu III, ATX form factor, 1AGP+5PCI+AMR and AGP 1X/2X/4X (Sideband) 1.5V/3.3V device support. The CX6, in comparison, will have ATA66 support, 2 RIMM sockets, AC'97 Audio, SoftMenu III, ATX form factor, 1AGP+5PCI+AMR and AGP 1X/2X/4X (Sideband) 1.5V/3.3V device support. Glancing, at the specs, we only see one difference between the BH6...err CH6 and CX6, the CH6 will support ordinary SDRAM, while the CX6 will support RDRAM. Based on these facts, we suspect that the CX6 will cost more than the CH6, but we'll have to wait and see...

Er wordt weer eens een poging gedaan om de criminaliteit op internet te beperken:

Microsoft heeft bevestigd dat de web-browser Internet Explorer een beveiligingslek heeft waardoor buitenstaanders ongemerkt de bestanden van gebruikers kunnen inzien. Een pasklare oplossing voor het probleem is er vooralsnog niet.

Bij CTNews is een review te vinden van de Guillemot 3D Prophet GeForce 256 kaart. In de review staan vrij veel benchmarks met o.a. een Annihilator en een Voodoo3 3000. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

We loved the 3D Prophet. There is a bunch of competition for it. We have looked at the Annihilator (Go here for that) and are going to review the ASUS V6600 Deluxe soon. We still haven't seen a Savage 2000 card (Diamonds Viper II) that ran correctly on all the games we want it to handle. They aren't likely to take the performance crown away from the GeForces anyway. Because it seems that this GeForce GPU has the horse power to pull any game that is out now. We tried it in Unreal Tournament at some crazy high resolutions like 1600x1280x32-bits to see if it would choke. As it turns out it's got a few soft spots, but with a driver update and the Guillemot and the cool overclocking utility you can really make this baby swing!

The only real downside to the Prophet is it doesn't have DDRAM. It will costs less than one of those will. The performance is really quite good. The last question is, do you replace your present video card for the Prophet? The answer is blowin' in the wind. As in how much money do you want to spend? At 250+/- dollars this isn't an easy choice. TNT2 Ultra owners might look at it, but there is no need. Matrox G400 owners might look at the DDR version or the NV15's coming in 6-8 months. Voodoo 3 owners might want the better looking 32-bit color and the speed increase over the 3500 is worth a check mark.

Koen Crijns, bekend van Hardwareinfo.net heeft een round-up gepost van vier 8-speed CD-ReWriters. In de test zijn opgenomen de HP 9110i (IDE) en de HP 9210i (SCSI) en van Sony de CRX140E (IDE) en CRX140S (SCSI). Uit de test bleek dat de drives vrijwel gelijk presteerden en dat de IDE versies geen problemen hebben met het branden op 8-voudige snelheid. Hieronder een gedeelte:

Een tijdje terug kondigden plotsklaps vele hardware fabrikanten een nieuwe reeks 8-speed CD-writers aan. Een 4-speed CD-writer is ondertussen "standaard" geworden, zodat er in de markt zeker plaats is voor wat duurdere, maar vooral snellere 8-speed modellen. Met de komst van 8-speed CD-writers is de tijd van lang wachten voorbij. Een cd-rom is in een 8-speed writer binnen tien minuten helemaal vol gebrand. Dit is natuurlijk niet alleen handig voor mensen die er "productiewerk" mee doen, maar ook voor personen die afhankelijk zijn van slechts één PC: na amper 10 minuten kun je weer verder met andere zaken.

In dit artikel zal ik een aantal van de nieuwe 8-speed branders beschrijven. Zowel van HP als van Sony ontvingen wij een IDE en SCSI versie van hun nieuwe 8-speed CD-writers. Bij HP zijn dit de 9110i (IDE) en de 9120i (SCSI), en bij Sony de CRX140E (IDE) en de CRX140S (SCSI). De marktprijzen voor de beide merken zijn vrijwel gelijk. De IDE uitvoeringen zien we overal voor ca. Fl. 650,-- en de SCSI uitvoeringen voor ca. Fl. 200,-- meer. De relatief hoge meerprijs maakt de drempel voor SCSI helaas weer een stukje hoger. Zeker als je bedenkt dat je voor de SCSI writers ook nog een extra controller van minimaal Fl. 100,-- nodig hebt. Tijdens de test bleek echter dat de nieuwe 8-speed CD-writers op de IDE bus vrijwel net zo stabiel functioneren als de SCSI-tegenhangers. Door de integratie van het Ultra ATA/33 protocol bij CD-writers is het prestatie- en stabiliteitsverschil tussen SCSI en IDE voor een groot gedeelte weggeëbd. Het enige functionele verschil tussen IDE en SCSI modellen was dat het bij IDE niet mogelijk was om audio-cd's 1-op-1 te kopiëren op 8-speed. Uiteraard was het wel zo dat de SCSI-writers een stuk minder CPU-belastend waren.

PC Arena heeft een review gepost van de Creative Labs 3D Blaster Annihilator Pro met 32MB DDR geheugen. Helaas geen overclocking resultaten, wel een zooitje benchmarks van de kaart op een P2-300 en een P3-500.

As you have noticed, the Double Data Rate memory did significantly help along performance. The SDRAM version of the Annihilator only brought in about 75 fps on the 300MHz processor. Also, the performance of the P3-500 matches in TL accelerated benchmarks an Athlon with a Voodoo3 or TNT2 Ultra. We can set to rest, all the Quakers out there will instantly fall in love with this board. I found that even the lowly P2-300 can chug along on a 80 thousand-triangle scene at about 25-30 fps. Currently the fastest CPU in the world, the Athlon, has a lot of trouble doing a scene like that with the intensive lighting effects presented in the demos.

The TL engine on the GeForce256 is here to stay; processor bound users need this board more than any other. Let’s say a new game ships, and this game supports TL acceleration but is designed to run on current non-TL accelerated boards. Now, let’s also say that the typical scene has 40 thousand triangles per scene. The P2-300 users are automatically excluded from such a game if they own a Voodoo3 or even the upcoming Voodoo4/5, a P2-300 user is still excluded no matter how high the fillrate of the board is. If a P2-300 was coupled with a GeForce256 based video board, a 40k triangle scene is no sweat, and they can now play this game with ease. In addition, they could play this game at a much higher framerate than that of users on a non-TL accelerated video board.

Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) on Tuesday announced that it will co-develop a Linux-based handwriting recognition and electronic-signature software development kit that company officials believe could result in the creation of a range of different products for several categories of wireless Internet appliances.

Based around CIC's Jot handwriting system and its InkTools development kit, CIC and Middlesoft, a San Francisco-based start-up, jointly will integrate the finished products into Middlesoft's graphical user interface.

Middlesoft's interface is specifically crafted for handheld devices and other Internet information appliances and can also be integrated with widget frameworks on Linux such as QT and GTK.

ZDNet Nederland meldt in dit nieuwsbericht dat de aandelen van Corel het niet echt lekker doen op het moment. Investeerders zijn ook niet echt overtuigd over een snelle verbetering:

Softwaremaker Corel mocht dan wel vorige week op de beurs beloond zijn met de bedoeling de Linux-markt verder te omarmen, vandaag konden zij op minder genade rekenen. De cijfers voor de verkoop van hun softwarepakketten voor Windows liggen heel wat lager dan verwacht.

Maar Corels CEO Michael Cowpland ziet het niet somber in, en verwacht dat de totale omzet door de verkoop van Linux-software terug zal stijgen. De recente waardetoename van Corel-aandelen was vooral het gevolg van de Linux-hype die even de beurs overheerste. De onderneming wil zich in de toekomst meer richten op Linux-gebruikers, en investeert aanzienlijk in bedrijven die werken rond het besturingssysteem. Zo nam Corel nog deze week een participatie van 33 percent in LinuxForce, een dienstenfirma gespecialiseerd in Linux.

Maar investeerders zijn niet overtuigd: Corel heeft een twijfelachtige reputatie op de beurs. In het verleden omhelsde het softwarebedrijf vaak de nieuwste technologieën, die dan vaak eerder een bron van verliezen dan wel van winsten waren. Java en handhelds zijn zo notoire ex-stokpaardjes van Corel.

De aankondiging van de groepen Verb0 en Hackers in Paradise (HiP) verscheen heel toepasselijk op een aantal gehackte sites. Ze volgen op hun manier dus de oproep van de VS-regering. Een adviseur van Clinton had aan de hackergemeenschap gevraagd om hun activiteiten te staken in het weekend van de overgang naar 2000. Dit om te vermijden dat zwaar op de proef gestelde computersystemen er totaal onderdoor zouden gaan.

Verb0 liet op een aantal sites, waaronder de on line gaming-site Echolon Entertainment, de oproep "STOP HACKING FOR ONE DAY, FROM 31th DECEMBER 1999 TO 1st JANUARY 2000" achter.

De groep Hackers in Paradise koos voor een langer, hoofdletterrijk epistel: "Hackers in Paradise Will NOT Be Defacing Web Pages From At least Dec 31 to Jan 2! We Can't Speak For Any Other Groups Or Individuals, But It Is Our Hope That Others Will Also Abstain From Defacing, Until The Y2K Hysteria Has Settled Down."

Hoewel de oproep van de VS eerder gericht was op professionele hackers die zich specialiseren in netwerken, is de respons van groepen die zich bezighouden met het vervangen van websites door hun eigen versies toch welkom nieuws.

Maar Verb0 en HiP zouden de uitzondering kunnen zijn. Volgens Brian Jones, een medewerker van de hackers-fansite Attrition.org, is dit het geval. "We hebben gesproken met verschillende hackers, en hebben het gevoel dat er een race zal zijn voor de eerste grote hack in het nieuwe millennium."

Bij Target PC is wat meer info te vinden rondom de nieuwe Joshua processor van Cyrix (overgenomen voor VIA). Met features zoals support voor 66, 100 en 133MHz en unlocked clock multipliers kan dit weleens een erg goed overklokbaar CPU'tje worden :

First off the Joshua is in a socket 370 format which means it uses existing formats (slot 1 with converter card). Next is the support for 66-100-133 Mhz FSB, you know what this means, the clock multiplier is not locked. This processor can be used on mainboards with chipsets ranging from LX chipsets right up to the latest i840, using a slot converter card. Now Cyrix has entered the Intel only territory, pretty gutsy move don’t ya think?

The technical specs indicate the Joshua is as technically advanced as it’s competition, On die full speed L2 Cache (more on that later), .018u fabrication process, 3dnow!™ Technology, and "Enhanced dual pipelined MMX™ and FPU"!

The .018 fabrication process should pretty well guarantee that the Joshua would be an overclocker’s dream. The processor is supposed to be launched at a paltry 433 Mhz, why 433 you ask? This could be the backdoor attack that could bring Intel to its knees. The processor will be classed as an entry level CPU and it’s primary target is the Intel Celeron™, since the Celerons are .025u technology CPU’s the Joshua should become the new hotrod in the entry level arena. After all the Celeron wasn’t a popular processor until it was realized that they had overclocking potential that put them in the performance arena with their bigger brothers the PII-PIII. The Joshua should have a core tolerance of speeds in excess of 700+ Mhz. The best the Celeron cores can do is 600 Mhz on rare occasion. Hey! 700Mhz for the price of a 433? Now that is something that would catch the eyes of a lot of gamers/power junkies/ Overclockers, and hopefully PC manufacturers.

The L2 Cache is Full speed on die that is "Mutually exclusive". Well what the heck does that mean? It means that the 64kb L1 cache can share the 256k L2 cache’s memory, and vice versa. Now you have a 320K full speed cache that acts like a big L1 cache AND L2 Cache. Integer performance should be out of this world, and with the enhanced dual pipelined FPU (hopefully) the Trait that killed national semi conductor, could be gone.

This "new" version of Win98 (Code named Millennium) is set to be released sometime next year (summer seems to be the rumor right now) and will offer not only some much needed upgrades to some of the core components such as dial-up, built in DLL protection, Internet Connection Sharing, plus several other upgrades but most importantly, stability of the OS as a whole is getting a huge boost.

MS will also be adding some new features such as Games which you can play on-line through the MS Gaming Zone, plus a new utility called System Restore. System Restore works works a lot like some of the utilities you have seen on the market such as Go Back which allow you to bring back a saved configuration from earlier in a session or from a different day entirely. Also included will be a huge upgrade to the Internet Connection Wizard. This new wizard combines what could have been several wizards in to one easy to use wizard. This along with everything else I have talk about here will be covered in this review.
