Van Tyan weet iedereen al een tijdje en de geruchten over Asus zullen de meeste mensen zich ook nog wel herinneren, maar dat MSI de derde is die meedoet was nog niet bekend. Hard|OCP meldt vandaag dat ook dit bedrijf op 4 juni een AMD 760MP moederbord zal introduceren. Dit bord zal waarschijnlijk iets aantrekkelijker geprijsd zijn dan de Thunder K7, waar in Duitsland 1700 Mark voor gevraagd wordt. Eerdere vertragingen van de release zouden veroorzaakt zijn omdat AMD bang was niet aan de Palomino vraag te kunnen voldoen. Op dit moment zou het bord helemaal af zijn en ingepakt en al liggen te wachten op tot de release:

The official announcement date is June 4th. Apparently, part of the delay is due to the fact that AMD is concerned that they might not be able to keep up with Palomino demand for them. So, armed with a little more knowledge, I went back to the Tyan table, and talked with them again. They seemed to warm up a lot more this time, and they eventually told me 2 important facts : large Canadian wholesalers (Ingram Micro for note) cued the SKU for the 760MP yesterday (which would have been the 16th), and that they expect wholesale price to be $500 US. Keep in mind that is WHOLESALE, so a reseller would put a mark up on that obviously.

De ruim een maand geleden geïntroduceerde MSI K7T Turbo Limited is gereviewed door VIA Hardware. Dit KT133A plankje heeft ten opzichte van de standaard K7T Turbo een rood PCB kleurtje en wordt geleverd met een "PC 2 PC" networking kit. Hiermee kun je eenvoudig twee PC's koppelen met behulp van een USB-kabel.

Tijdens het gebruik laat deze Limited-versie net als zijn broertje een prima performance zien, en ook op het gebied van overklokbaarheid blijft dit MSI bordje sterk. Toch wordt er geconcludeerd dat zijn toegevoegde waarde voor de meeste mensen gering blijft waardoor een lager geprijsde versie een betere optie is. Voor mensen die zich graag onderscheiden van de massa is het natuurlijk wél een interessante optie:

MSI realizes this and has tried to produce a motherboard that is unique and that can give them the edge in this market. It is very clear that the MSI K7T Turbo Limited will not be for everyone. However MSI has produced a board which should catch everyone's eye. The feature list on the K7T Turbo Limited is impressive and the Red PCB is beautiful. The documentation is also top notch, which is helpful even to a more advanced user. However despite these benefits, many users will not use features such as Fuzzy Logic, Live Bios updating, USB PC2PC networking, and will certainly not pay extra money to have those features. If you are in the market for a KT133A board and do not need all of these extras and are looking for a low price, I highly suggest the Abit KT7E.

X-Bit Labs heeft een grote tabel samengesteld met daarin uitgebreide specificaties van alle Epox moederborden die de komende maanden op de markt moeten komen. Deze maand is duidelijk de drukste; we vinden maar liefst zeven nieuwe Socket370 borden die geschikt zijn voor Tualatin plankjes, zowel met Intel 815 B-step als VIA 694T. Verder komt er alsnog een Pentium 4 bord met het 'oude' socket en een drietal nieuwe Socket A printplaten. In de periode juni/juli begint de overstap van de Intel Pentium 4 processor naar Socket478 en dat viert het bedrijf door meteen drie 845 Brookdale plankjes te introduceren met dit nieuwe socket. In augustus komen de eerste moederborden gebaseerd op de omstreden VIA P4X266 chipset uit, zowel Socket423 als Socket478:

• EPoX will still make a Socket423 Pentium 4 mainboard on Intel 850 chipset. In fact, it may still manage to pay back, because there is some time left before the launching of Socket478 processors.
• Among a great variety of mainboards there is only one model with an integrated IDE RAID controller. Well, it looks as if they were no longer popular...
• All the new mainboards on VIA chipsets do not have a single AMR, ACR or CNR slot onboard. What does it mean? :-)
• And in conclusion we would like to point out one more low-cost mainboards for AMD CPUs: EP-8KEM based on VIA KLE133 chipset (the cheapest chipset from VIA with the integrated Trident Blade 3D graphics core).

Uit de eerste reviews van de nieuwe Socket A DDR chipset SiS 735 is gebleken dat hij zeker niet onder doet voor oplossingen van gevestigde namen zoals AMD 760 en VIA KT266. Het grote probleem waar het bedrijf echter mee kampt is het ontbreken van vertrouwen aan de kant van moederbordontwerpers en klanten. Het was dus nog maar de vraag of hij ooit veel bekendheid zou krijgen; alleen de Chaintech 7SID zou voorzien worden van de chipset. Op de website van het bedrijf vinden we nu dat ook het gerespecteerde - en in Nederland te krijgen - MSI van plan is een moederbord op de markt te brengen met de nieuwe chipset. Naast de MS-6517 voor Socket A zal het bedrijf ook een MS-6515 voor Socket370 op de markt brengen, gebaseerd op de SiS 635T chipset. We wachten met spanning op de press release

Op de E3 gamesbeurs heeft iemand een gesprek gehad met de vice-president van productontwikkeling bij nVidia. Deze bleek bereid het een en ander los te laten over dingen waarover tot nu toe slechts gespeculeerd kon worden. Op het forum van Beyond3D kun je een kort verslag lezen van het gesprek. Men heeft het onder andere gehad over de ontwikkelingen voor de Xbox, die bijna twee jaar duurden en vertraging op het gebied van desktops opleverden. De chip in de Xbox is een hoger geklokte GeForce3 met twee T&L units. De opvolger van de GeForce3 zal extra features hebben en een nieuwe officiële Detonator moet deze week verschijnen op de website van het bedrijf. Hieronder nog wat leuke feitjes:

• Nvidia is currently not doing a tile-based architechture, but may if it's the right solution they may in the future
• No firm information on future plans. Did say there will be a fall 2001 line of products. Also strongly intimated "Geforce3 MX " would either be a spring 2002 or fall 2001 product.
• No plans at moment for Nvidia to enter the PC Audio market ala Creative Labs
• Nvidia and Intel co-developed the X-Box motherboard (never heard this one before)
• Geforce3 SUPPORTS 3d textures and Volumetric Texture Compression which they licensed to Microsoft. They may add a OpenGL ext to enable it soon.
• Nvidia has 5 product development teams working on products.

Heise Online meldt dat gehaaste snelbakkers binnenkort aan de slag kunnen met 24X Recordables van Mitsui en Ricoh. Voorlopig is het nog wel wachten op de eerste 24-speed CD-branders. Sanyo heeft inmiddels een 24-speed loopwerk aangekondigd en er gaan geruchten dat Plextor volgende maand een 24X brander uitbrengt, maar momenteel zijn deze drives nog niet verkrijgbaar:

Mitsui Advanced Media und Ricoh bieten mittlerweile CD-R-Medien an, die für Brenngeschwindigkeiten von bis zu 24X geeignet sein sollen. Mitsui ist nach eigenen Angaben der erste Hersteller, der die Händler mit den SG Ultra II getauften High-Speed-Medien beliefern kann. Bei Ricoh soll es in etwa zwei Wochen soweit sein. Immerhin liegt Ricohs neuem 20X-Brenner MP7200A bereits ein solcher Rohling (CDR80-24XPCE) bei. Einen Preis konnte bislang keines der beiden Unternehmen nennen. Was dem Kunden nun noch fehlt, sind die passenden 24X-Brenner, denn die lassen bislang noch auf sich warten.

De DVD+RW Alliance heeft aangekondigd dat het DVD+RW formaat is uitgebreid met een DVD+R 'Write-Once' mogelijkheid voor het eenmalig beschrijven van DVD discs. DVD+R is wat betreft functionaliteit vergelijkbaar met de welbekende CD-R, alleen biedt het zeven keer zoveel opslagcapaciteit. De schijfjes zijn leesbaar door het merendeel van de DVD-ROM drives en DVD Video spelers die tegenwoordig in gebruik zijn. Begin maart werd DVD+RW uitverkozen tot de universele standaard voor beschrijfbare DVD's. Daarvoor was er sprake van concurrentie met vier andere standaarden, namelijk DVD-R/RW, DVD-RW en DVD-RAM:

The DVD+RW Alliance, a group of companies committed to the benefits of the DVD+RW format, today announced the addition of write-once (DVD+R) capabilities to rewritable DVD+RW products slated to be introduced this summer. The DVD+RW Alliance discussed DVD+R during an Alliance-sponsored conference with software vendors in San Francisco.

``With rewritable CD technology, consumers preferred a choice between rewritable discs and those that can be written only once, for permanent storage,'' said John Spofford, vice president and general manager, HP Personal Storage Solutions. ``Given this, the DVD+RW Alliance will support a write-once DVD+R capability that allows consumers to safely archive their scanned documents, presentations, home videos, and photos.''

DVD+R discs will offer seven times the storage capacity of a CD-R, can be written and read by DVD+RW drives, and can be played back in the majority of DVD-ROM drives and DVD Video players in use today. Because of this, the DVD+RW Alliance believes DVD+R is the logical extension of CD-R technology and will enable a new level of convergence for digital video.

``CD-R and CD-RW gave the world a seamless media exchange between the personal computing and consumer electronics environments for data and music,'' said Spofford. ``Now, DVD+R and DVD+RW will do the same for digital video and images.''

Apple kondigt volgende week op de Worldwide Developer Conference waarschijnlijk een nieuwe versie aan van OS X voor servers, meldt News.com. Een indicatie voor de release datum van OS X Server werd door Apple reeds gegeven tijdens de lancering van MacOS X, toen opperhoofd Steve Jobs beloofde dat het bedrijf eind juni zou beginnen met de levering van een nieuwe versie. De speculaties over een aankondiging op de WWDC worden ondersteund door het feit dat Apple's online store is gestopt met de levering van computers met de oude versie van OS X Server:

In addition, Apple's online store has stopped selling computers with the older version of Mac OS X Server and promises that machines with Mac OS X Server are "coming soon."

The first version of Mac OS X Server was released in January 1999, offering some of the same technology used in the consumer version of Mac OS X but without the snazzy Aqua interface or compatibility with existing Mac applications.

Er is geen sprake van grote veranderingen in de voorraden bij de Apple distributeurs en het is daarom onwaarschijnlijk dat Apple de WWDC zal aangrijpen om nieuwe hardware te introduceren. De Appelaars werden begin mei gelukkig gemaakt met een nieuwe iBook en voor meer nieuwe spullen moeten zij waarschijnlijk wachten tot de Macworld Expo in juli.

The Register schrijft dat AMD tegenover Bloomberg heeft bevestigd dat de 1,4GHz Athlon begin juni wordt aangekondigd. Of de release samenvalt met de introductie van de 760MP chipset en de server/workstation versie van de Athlon 4 is vooralsnog onduidelijk. Beide producten worden naar verwachting op 4 juni gelanceerd. Sinds enkele dagen beginnen in de Pricewatch prijzen binnen te komen voor de 1,4GHz Thunderbird. Het komt dan ook niet als een verrassing dat de officiële aankondiging binnenkort zal plaatsvinden:

The confirmation came from an AMD spokeswoman in Hong Kong, Bloomberg reports. "The product will be announced early in June," she said.

[...] The part will launch at 1.4GHz, but Bloomberg also notes an SIS spokesman who claimed that "according to AMD's information, it will offer versions of the chip that run up to 1.7GHz".

An anonymous person has done a little fooling around with what appear to be a pair of Palomino chips (256KB L2) running on our favourite beery mobo, Guinness. This particular revision of the BIOS reports the chip as "Athlon Pro" (reminds me about how some BIOSes referred to the K6-2 as "K6 3D" initially). I've been told which sample batch of machines this is from, but I'm going to hold back on that, just to keep this person's identity a tinier bit more of a secret.

The chips are running at 1.20GHz, and completely subjective analysis suggests that they run cooler than 1.33GHz Thunderbirds. The notable words here are "remarkably cool to the touch", though again, it is subjective analysis here. Something that is not subjective: C Compilation of certain source code (I cannot say precisely what) on a dual 1.20GHz Pally runs about 10% faster than the same activity on a 4-way 550MHz P3XP (Pentium III Xeon).
