LEEUWARDEN – De statenfractie van het CDA in Friesland vraagt software-ontwikkelaar Microsoft het Fries op te nemen in haar spellingcontrole. Frans Kuipers en Inne Heerma wijzen het bedrijf er op dat veel talen standaard in de programma's zijn opgenomen, zoals bijvoorbeeld de minderheidstalen Catalaans en Baskisch. Fries ontbreekt, terwijl het om de officiële tweede rijkstaal van Nederland gaat. Het CDA beseft dat de Fryske Akademy in 1997 al een Friese spellingcontrole heeft laten maken, maar gezien de steeds grotere invloed van de informatietechnologie kan Microsoft door middel van taalondersteuning een grote betekenis hebben, zo staat in de brief.

UPC Internet [break]Chello heeft ook een reaktie op hun website geplaatst over het gebruik van FuckUPC:[/break] De afgelopen dagen verschenen er in de pers berichten over een student in Hilversum, die zijn modemsoftware had gewijzigd om zichzelf meer bandbreedte toe te kennen en die instructies voor deze methode vervolgens op het Internet publiceerde.

UPC en chello benadrukken met klem dat deze methode niet aan alle gebruikers voordeel oplevert. In feite kan dit de snelheid aanzienlijk verslechteren voor de tienduizenden Nederlandse abonnees van chello broadband. UPC en chello zijn inmiddels gestart met het nemen van softwaremaatregelen waarmee de gepubliceerde methode onwerkzaam wordt.

Met de gepubliceerde methode wordt de snelheid van het modem, maar niet de snelheid van de chello-diensten verhoogd. De structuur van kabelnetwerken verschilt van de structuur van een vast telefoonnetwerk, waar iedere gebruiker een eigen lijn heeft. Een kabelnetwerk maakt gebruik van gedeelde bandbreedte: gebruikers uit dezelfde buurt delen samen de beschikbare bandbreedte. Om een analogie te gebruiken: dit komt op hetzelfde neer als een bewoner in een straat, die zijn waterleiding vervangt door dikkere pijpen en daarmee de hele watervoorraad van de buurt in beslag neemt. Eén gebruiker kan dan met gemak een compleet zwembad vullen, terwijl de rest van de buurt niet genoeg water heeft voor een douche.

Extreme Harwdare keek naar de IWill Slocket II converter, bedoeld om PPGA (Celeron) en FC-PGA (Pentium III E) processors op je Slot 1 plank te prikken. Net als eerdere reviews bleek het ding goed te werken:

Although there are some issues with the Iwill Slocket II, many of them can be attributed to trying to get a product to market fast enough to meet demand. Once you get around the rough edges, the Iwill Slocket II is a very functional, high-quality product. It performs flawlessly with FC-PGA Pentium III and S370 Celeron processors, is compatible Coppermine-ready Slot 1 motherboards, and is one of the few next-gen Slocket adaptors available. Just based on these points alone, I can recommend the Iwill Slocket II if you're in the market for a FC-PGA Pentium III, but want to use it with a higher performing Slot 1 motherboard.

Indeed, this Nero is the fastest burner software I tested, and it's seemingly coaster-proof. A true challenger to Easy CD Creator Deluxe 4.0 has been found, even if it is more aptly reflective of the great Augustus Caesar (*ahem*).

Nero is loaded with cool features and ability to control the burning process. It must have been written with the Ars Technica crowd in mind: the overclocker in you can even "overburn" your media past its published limit and snag up to 4 more minutes of data (at your own risk, of course). Rawkin'!

Like Easy CD Creator Deluxe 4.0, you can also burn audio discs straight from MP3, but Nero flames Easy CD to a crisp by decoding and burning on the fly, spitting out a 70 minute audio CD created from MP3s in only 12 minutes, as opposed to 25 (on my 6x SCSI burner). 12 minutes! Nero manhandled 630MB of data in 13 minutes, as opposed to 19 minutes for Easy CD. Woosh! Nero is just downright fast.

GA-Source heeft een review op het net geplakt van de nieuwe Monster Sound MX400 geluidskaart van Diamond. Het kaartje is gebaseerd op de Canyon 3DTM audio controller van ESS en heeft ondersteuning voor EAX 1.0, EAX 2.0 en A3D 1.0. Hoewel de geluidskwaliteit erg goed te noemen is constateerde GA-Source wel een vrij hoge CPU belasting:

Well there is a downside to arguably having what is the best 3D sound, and that is CPU utilization. Somewhat similarly to the MX300 when it hit the market, the MX400 has a fairly high CPU utilization. In my testing, I did notice that it scaled well with processors. On a 450mhz system, the MX400 had anywhere from 3% to 7% more CPU utilization than the SoundBlaster Live! which translated into a noticeable difference in some games. In Unreal for instance, that meant going from 34 frames per second down to 30, which was enough to tell. The good thing was that on my 600mhz system, the CPU utilization of the MX400 dropped significantly. On it it ran at most with only 2% more CPU utilization, and on that system the MX400 never slower by 2 frames per second in any games that I tried, which works for me.

As far as 2d and DVD performance goes, I thought the quality was great. For 2D audio, my only disappointment is that there are only 2 connectors internally, and one of the is mono only got a voice modem or case microphone. The actual sound quality itself was great, and I had no playback or other issues. The included Zoran SoftDVD sounded almost exactly the same through 4 speakers as a dedicated DVD player sounded through Dolby Digital. I ran Starship Troopers, Ronin and The Matrix through it, and they all sounded great.

WinDVD2000 is a great package because it has nifty features like four 2-speaker modes, not counting 4,5 and 6 speaker modes. When the picture quality was compared to other DVD programs, such as the OEM Zoran player, WinDVD2K was dramatically better. Iron Giant was a fabulous test for surround effects as the standard date movies (chick flicks) don’t lean towards big cracks and booms to take your mind off of what you’re really watching (your date!). In wide screen mode the picture quality was flawless at 1024x768x32-bit true color monitor resolution. Zero dropped frames, freezes, digital artifacts, or anti-aliasing jaggies.

Next, I viewed one of the greatest chick flicks ever—Meet Joe Black. The outdoor scenes gave a moderately realistic impression of being outdoors. In this case, the DVD format showed its aging NTSC limitations. Since HDTV can be easily obtained (at least in my area) and broadcasts of its type can be viewed nightly. I have serious reservations as to the life span of any NTSC based gear. Be that as it may, flesh tones were very true, especially in 32-bit color. At one point, with all the lights off, I thought I was watching the big screen.

Sharky Extreme maakt ons blij met hun review van de MidiLand S4 7100. Dit Dolby Digital 5.1 speakersetje wordt geleverd met een krachtige subwoofer, 5 satellite speakers en een 'control module' die je ook in je 5.25" drive bay kan leggen.

Using a Sound Blaster Live! audio card with the 7100 proved to be a good match, as the customization of the Live!'s software mated well with the dynamic range of the 7100 speakers.

In Half-Life and Quake III: Arena particularly, the 7100 provided a superior audio experience in our opinion to the older Cambridge Soundworks speaker systems we've used the past year.

The rapport of gunfire from Half-Life's base MP5 assault rifle is a great high-treble/high-bass test, and even at a volume that was painful to endure from a range of 18", the 7100 satellites performed well.

The 7100's subwoofer is fairly competent, able to handle a good amount of bass while not audibly distorting, although with some MP3 songs and certain bass-heavy CD based hip-hop tracks we were able to overwhelm the unit at higher volume ranges.

The satellite speakers also suffered from being overwhelmed by bass frequencies at the higher volumes, although they did exhibit higher tolerances than the speakers of competitor units did.

AnandTech bezorgt ons vandaag een review van de Asus V6800 Deluxe met DDR SGRAM, TV-out, S-Video input, S-Video output, composite output en support voor de bekende 3D shutterbril. De kaart bleek verder uitermate goed gekoeld te zijn waardoor hij zich tot 156/346MHz liet overklokken. Volgens Matthew Witheiler hebben we hier te maken met de snelste GeForce kaart van het moment.

When it all pans out, the ASUS V6800 Deluxe is the best GeForce based graphics card on the market albeit a very high price. The included VR features of the card are a plus, but the glasses remain useless after the gimmick factor wares off (unless, of course, you need some cool shades to sun bathe in). The high overclocked speed of the card says a lot about the quality of ASUS products, as inferior cards have never been able to reach these speeds. The need to buy this card depends on the person. If you would like a good gaming card with video features but are not willing to spend $339 after the holiday season, the lower priced ASUS V6600 Deluxe, which uses SDR RAM, is most likely the best card for you. If you are looking for a great game performer with few additional features, almost any DDR card will do. If you are looking for a great game performer with video features, the V6800 Deluxe is the card for you, even with such a high price tag.

De review van AMD Zone / SlotA.com over hun KX133 engineering sample moederbord is eindelijk online gezet. Ditmaal kreeg Chris Tom AGP 4X gelukkig wel zonder problemen aan de praat. Uit de benchmarks blijkt dat de KX133 het duidelijk wint van de AMD 751 chipset onder ZDNet's Winstone 99 and Content Creation en het programma stream, dat de geheugen bandbreedte voor CPU en FPU test. Het plankje bleef verder ook uitermate stabiel tijdens alle benchmarks:

I have to say that I am impressed by the KX133. The stability of the board was top notch. I had expected more problems with AGP 2X and 4X. I experienced no lockups with the TNT 2 and did not have to resort to registry hacks to enable 2X, 4X or side banding. It looks like Via has done an excellent job following the AGP spec.

I was also satisfied with the chipsets performance. Sure it lagged in some tests, but remember that the KX133 will excel when using applications that that access the memory heavily. This is why it pulled ahead of the AMD 751 with Winstone 99 and Content Creation. Gaming performance is a little bit trickier. While it held its own with the 751 I was hoping to see an improvement of some sort with AGP 4X enabled. In all of the testing I have done so far I have not seen a definite increase.

One thing to keep in mind also is that KX133 based boards should be a significant amount less costly than previous Athlon boards. They will only require a 4 layer PCB and it should cost Via less to manufacture than the 751. As for compatibility with other components like ram, power supplies, and video cards, only time will tell. I will try to test more components, including generic power supplies and ram. I hope that these boards will signal an end to Athlon system configuration nightmares.

Microsoft heeft bekend gemaakt dat de opvolger van Windows 98SE de naam 'Windows Millennium Edition' draagt. Windows Me staat gepland voor later dit jaar en heeft als meest opwindende 'feature' het ontbreken van ouwe rotte legacy code (thanks Diederik voor de tip):

Windows Me is so dubbed to alleviate what it terms "customer confusion" between the consumer and business editions of Windows. Windows 2000 is actually the successor to the enterprise OS Windows NT, rather than the consumer OS Windows 98, despite what the title implies.

"The name Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows Me, will help Microsoft to clearly identify this next iteration of the OS as the Windows version designed specifically with the home user in mind," said Shawn Sanford, Microsoft Windows Group Product Manager.

[...] The most important change to users will be Windows Me's dedication to 'PC Health,' in this case, ripping out more of the 'legacy' code dedicated to keep older MS-DOS-only programs running and optimizing existing code. The "Real Mode" functions -- which Windows 3.1 veterans will recall back when Windows was little more than a graphical interface for DOS -- are being removed, which the company says will speed the boot-up process and result in a more stable system.

SysOpt.com kreeg het dankzij de FreeSpeed Athlon GFD van Ninja Micro voor mekaar om een Athlon 700 richting 800MHz te pushen. Hier een sampletje uit hun review:

Using our Athlon 700MHz processor, I pried the rear cover off of the processor in preparation for connecting the FreeSpeed module. Then, I configured the module for 750MHz operation, initially with the default 1.6v. The module connected to the processor easily, and I finished the process by connecting the case power connector to the module. The system booted at 750MHz, and loaded Windows, but was unstable. Thus, I shut down the system and upped the voltage to 1.65v, and voila, perfectly stable. I repeated the process for 800MHz, which needed 1.70v to be stable. For those of you not familiar with overclocking, trial and error of multipliers and voltage settings is inherent to the process, and this went much more smoothly than it often does. Unfortunately, I could not run the system well at 850MHz, even at 1.80v, but results will vary from processor to processor and definitely depends on the speed at which your processor is rated.

VNUNet.com schrijft dat Microsoft in een briefing heeft laten weten dat het overweegt om een Linux versie van z'n Mediaspelertje uit te brengen:

Paul Boudreau, Microsoft's programme manager for music and entertainment, said at a briefing on the software giant's plans for digital media: "We see a need for Unix players and are working in that direction, including Linux."

However, Boudreau said that the Apple Macintosh was more important today because it is used for "relevant content creation", and he confirmed that Media Player for the Mac would have digital rights management (DRM) software built-in.

BXBoards heeft een review gepost van de Soyo SY-6VBA133, een slot-1 moederplank met VIA Apollo Pro 133 chipset. Net als andere borden van Soyo is dit weer een erg leuke plank voor overklokkers. Dankzij de 1/2 AGP divider van de Apollo Pro 133 chipset hoeven PIII overklokkers zich niet ongerust te maken over een mogelijk te hoge AGP clock. Verder is er keuze uit maar liefst 29 busspeeds en kunnen de Vcore en L2 cache latency settings vanuit het BIOS getweakt worden. De prestaties van de plank geven helaas geen reden tot blijheid: uit benchmarks blijkt dat de Soyo SY-6BA+ IV met BX chipset duidelijk sneller is:

he Soyo SY-6VBA133 is derived from the 6ba+ range of Soyo boards, and therefore its lineage is beyond comparison. While the chipset has changed for this particular iteration, the class of the product remains, and Soyo's quality shines through. While some users wanting raw performance over all else will rightly choose the Soyo SY-6BA+ IV over its VIA PC133 based brother, the overclocker with an eye to AGP stability at 133 MHz speeds would be foolish to dismiss this board on slight performance issues alone.

Once again, Soyo show that right now they are producing the best overclocking boards on the market, and the SY-6VBA133 is a strong and compelling product. If VIA could improve the performance of its chipset, and Soyo reissue the board to use a PC133A part, this would be one of the hottest products on the market.

We doubt if anyone will wish to play at lower resolutions with FSAA effect, because the image will be evidently too blurred, which can surely make not the best impression. In fact, the optimal resolution for any game using FSAA is 1024x768 especially since the fillrate of Voodoo5 should be just enough for playing at such resolutions. However, if the user disables T-Buffer, he will be able to feel very comfortable when playing at the resolutions up to 1600x1200 at 60fps. Besides, at higher resolutions the detailization is also higher that is why FSAA is no longer so important there. And what will an average user prefer? Hard to tell. We can only remind you that most ordinary gamers are still playing at resolutions up to 1024x768. Of course, some users can boast larger monitors. Probably some of you can even afford to buy a graphics card for 600 bucks, which will allow using all T-Buffer effects at an acceptable level of performance. But we really doubt that there will be many users like that. The owners of such monitors, the so called hardcore gamers, will most probably prefer high resolution to lower resolution with FSAA. As a result, with a graphics card for $600 they will never use all its features. In other words, Voodoo5 seems to have a very gloomy future.

Extreme Hardware heeft een review van de ACT Labs RS Shifter versnellingsknuppel neer gemikt. Voor de (momenteel 3) games die het ondersteunen heeft de bak 7 of 6 versnellingen vooruit en eentje achteruit. In andere spellen kun je schakelen door de pook simpelweg vooruit of achteruit te duwen:

Ford Racing, Sports Car GT, Viper Racing, and Rally Championship (of which a two-level demo is included with the shifter) are currently the only titles that directly support the RS shifter for multi-position shifting. (Ed Note: We've heard that a plethora of future titles will support the RS Shifter, but we have yet to hear any official word yet.) In these games, the RS shifter’s performance is phenomenal. Each shift has the right amount of resistance and clicks nicely into place. The added realism of a real gear shifter is simply amazing. I would go so far as to rank the benefit of multi-position gear shifting right up there with force feedback. Once you’ve tried the RS shifter, you’ll never want to go back to a simple up/down control.

In een ander artikel wordt geschreven dat het tekort aan PIII processors inmiddels gevolgen heeft voor geheugen fabrikanten: de geheugen prijzen dalen als gevolg van de afnamende vraag. De Athlon beleeft ondertussen een uitstekende afzet: een aantal PC bouwers heeft besloten om hun high-end systemen van Athlon processors te voorzien: [/break] Meanwhile a source at a large Korean dealer claimed that the country has not seen even hide-nor-hair of Coppermines.

He said: "Prices on P3 500, 550, and 600's have gone up about 14 per cent in the last three weeks. The vendors claim they will continue to go up. No reason is given.

The Register denkt de oorzaak van de leveringsproblemen gevonden te hebben in geruchten dat Intel inmiddels met de produktie van de Willamette begonnen zou zijn, een processor waarvan de release eigenlijk voor het eind van dit jaar gepland staat. Nogal wilde speculaties die ik niet al te serieus zou nemen: The Register faalde eind vorig jaar glashard toen het dacht dat Willamette eind 1999 zou komen, bleek uiteindelijk een jaartje later te moeten zijn.

De KX133 review van AMD Zone / SlotA.com staat op dit moment nog niet online, wel mag je sabbelen op deze posting die Chris Tom (AMD Zone opperhoofd) op zijn forum heeft geplaatst. Het door hem geteste bord blijkt een KX133 engineering sample van VIA te zijn. AGP4x is op deze proefplank nog niet functioneel:

The board is an engineering sample from via. Tt was made by them for testing for companies. it is not a released product. I am also not sure whether this will be the same revision of the chipset as will be shipped with the final product. for an engineering sample, things could of been a lot worse. Also, the numbers there are agp 2x. not 4x. those will come later. Pne thing I was happy with was that agp 2x was enabled with the 3.62 drivers. there was no tweaking to be done. That alone makes it seem worth it to me. Also I expect the via chipset to probably cost a bit less than the amd 751. also, the first board i recieved was damaged, and would not display video, it came all the way from taiwan so that can be expected. i recieved this board yesterday, and thankfully it worked, with so far one problem that i was able to work around. that explains why you don't see more tests. i was slated to get a replacement sooner, but microsoft grabbed all of the boards they had up. via has been very helpful, i talked to the engineer that set up the board, but we were unable to get video output. kind of hard to do much benchbenchmarking without video.

Revisies van de Asus P3C-2000 die voor eind januari zijn verscheept (basicly alle borden die nu in de handel liggen) blijken problemen te vertonen met GeForce kaarten. Asus heeft een .pdf docje met een beschrijving van het probleem in elkaar gedrukt, deze file kun je wegtanken op Hardware.fr. Hier een hap:

Some distributors reported that systems built with ASUS P3C-2000 motherboards and NVIDIA GeForce256 based AGP VGA adapters seemed to expose system malfunction running 3D application when the systems were heavily loaded. After looking into the problem, we have with the following conclusions:

This problem was not found with systems built with 133MHz FSB CPUs. Neither was it observed with other AGP 4X capable graphics controllers such as Matrox G400 and S3 Savage4. But for 100MHz/100MHz CPU FSB/SDRAM configuration, the problem would occur with the noise introduced by the combination of GeForce256 AGP graphics controller configured in AGP 4X mode and part of the P3C-2000 motherboards delivered before end of January. It is recommended to enable the reserved test mode by bridging the cap on 2-3 first for the JP5 jumper on the motherboard whenever applicable. The test mode is designed to increase the noise margin and most systems were proved in our lab to workaround this problem in the test mode.
