Dit bevestigd eerdere vermoedens over de prijs van de Voodoo5 5500. Het valt te betwijfelen of 3dfx veel afzet krijgt met een kaart die binnen een half jaar verouderd is en de prijs heeft van een low-budget PC.

The Tornado 1000 case also sports a very innovative design. While most PC cases have three removable panels, two on the side and one on the top, the Tornado 1000 has only two removable panels. The side panel accessing the motherboard and internal components is standard, but the usual top and side panels are integrated into a one-piece unit. When opening the case for a quick tweak or upgrade, this design is very stable and you don't have to worry about the other side panel falling off by accident. Hardware Central schreef een review over de Pentium III E en vroeg zich af of dit de nieuwe Celeron 300A is. Wat betreft overklokbaarheid bleken de 500E en 550E het prima te doen, met als grootste probleem dat er behoorlijk snel geheugen nodig is om hoge busspeeds te bereiken (thanks Insane voor de tip):

Sadly, while we were in fact able to accomplish the same kind of success as with the Celeron 300A (+50%), it’s not as easily done. Firstly, the processor required fairly heavy increases in voltage to attain this level, and was not perfectly stable. Secondly, to achieve stability at that level may be out of reach for some as it would require extremely high-quality memory, placing too much pressure other components. The fact of the matter is that the Celeron 300A was a rare phenomenon. Its success was due not only to extreme overclockability but to the timing of its introduction. It’s doubtful we’ll ever see another processor capable of that degree of success.

On the bright side, the 500E is still an excellent and above average overclocker. 600 MHz is a virtual certainty, with 667 MHz almost guaranteed as well, though this may require a small increase in voltage. 750 MHz is not out of reach, but requires a solid platform and will likely demand an increase in voltage.

While not officially tested here, we would expect very similar results from the 550E. Using the same bus speed settings, 660 MHz should be a fairly safe bet, and 733 MHz shouldn’t be too far off.

3D Wars heeft een comparison in elkaar geflanst tussen de Asus V6600 Deluxe en de Elsa Erazor X. Qua performance blijkt de V6600 nèt wat beter te presteren dan de Erazor, terwijl de 3D Revelator glasses van Elsa wel beter zijn (moet je wel los kopen). Hieronder een gedeelte:

Overall, both cards are high-end graphics boards and are not for everyone. If you are a basic gamer, I would still recommend you buy a Voodoo3 or TNT2 until you were really 'into' the video card scene. On the other hand, there are many users who want performance and they want it now. In that case, it comes down to pricing as well. The Asus card is a bit over 300 dollars in retail and just under on the street. For the Elsa board, it's fewer than 290 dollars at retail and well under 250 when bought at street price. If you wanted to add the 3D Revelators to that, you would be looking to spend just about the same price for the Asus board, if not less. All in all, the V6600 Deluxe is faster than the Erazor X, has more features and comes with a bigger bundle. On the flip side, the Erazor X is a decent card, not really 'filled-up' with items that many gamers don't use. Both cards are pretty easily overclockable, so if speed is your thing, go for whichever one has the features you want.

As one would expect, the card sounds great. Since it's based on the same DSP as it's other Live! brethren (the EMU10K1), sound quality is basically as the original SBLive series cards. No, what makes this card da ballz (pardon my French) has to be the Live! DRIVE. I simply love it. The 5 1/4" drive gives the Platinum more silicon on which to connect audiophile goodness, and even if it makes me the lamest person in the world, I absolutely, positively love being able to plug both my headphones and my mic right into the front of my box.

Of course, my love for the card is surely edified by the fact that I was privy to a nice pair of Cambridge Soundworks speakers x 2, which equals FourPoint sound sensations. Indeed, with this setup, my appreciation for the S/PDIF out was diminished to a certain extent. What need I had previously perceived for connecting my box to my stereo was more or less satiated by a combination of headphone intensity and quad-sound gaming. If this is the future, it sounds great under Win32.

Linux performance isn't up to par on the Surround Sound front, but I'd wager that that will be fixed shortly. Since the drivers were open sourced in early November, the developers have moved with lightning speed.

If there's any real complaint about the performance of the Live! Platinum to be made, it's gotta be the unimpressive amount of power they push to the headphone jack. Anyone with a quality set of KOSS or Sony headphones (just to name a few) might find themselves a tad disappointed. Just a tad, mind you.

Mike Andrawes van AnandTech schreef een review van de AOpen MX64 MicroATX mobo gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Met maar 3 PCI sloten is het moeilijk uitbreiden, maar de overklokbaarheid van dit plankie is wel erg goed te noemen.

Once again, we were able to push our testbed FC-PGA Pentium III 550E to 5.5 x 150 MHz = 825 MHz - faster than any production level Intel CPU at the time of publication. No core voltage adjustments were necessary for our CPU. For full details, read Part 1 and Part 2 of AnandTech's Overclocking the FC-PGA Coppermine article. At overclocked or non-overclocked speeds, the MX64 was rock solid, as we've come to expect from AOpen.

Like other Apollo Pro 133/133A boards, the MX64 supports an "asynchronous" memory clock, meaning that it can run at a different speed than the FSB. Options include FSB clock and FSB clock +/- 33 MHz. When using the 133 MHz bus, FSB + 33 MHz is not available, nor is FSB - 33MHz when using a 66MHz FSB. It should also be noted that the setting labeled +/- 33 MHz is actually adding or subtracting the PCI bus speed. So if you're running a 150 MHz FSB, with the memory clock set for FSB - 33 MHz, you're actually getting 150 - 37.5 = 112.5 MHz (FSB = 150 MHz, PCI clock = 150/4=37.5 MHz). This is also a function of the VIA chipset rather than something unique to AOpen.

The BIOS options may come as a bit of a surprise for those that have never used a VIA based board before, as there are a number of options not found on Intel chipset-based systems. The most obvious is the memory setting mentioned above. As with other VIA Apollo Pro 133A boards, the AOpen offers the ability to enable or disable AGP 4X support from the Chipset Features Setup. Interestingly enough, there was no option for enabling/disabling AGP Fast Writes.

Bij Beyond 3D is een review te vinden van de Diamond Viper II gebaseerd op de Savage 2000 chip van S3. Tsja, en ook hier dezelfde conclusie: leuk kaartje, maar door de manke drivers is de performance vaak ver onder de maat.

The future of the Viper II is very questionable. While it is certainly true that the drivers are very immature, is that the only thing holding it back from it's full potential? Or is bandwidth the real issue? As 3D accelerators are becoming more and more powerful, bandwidth is becoming more and more important. There is certainly a lot of potential behind the Viper II even if a bandwidth limitation exists. Driver optimization is really the key for S3 right now. A primary focus for them needs to be reducing the amount of time the CPU is forced to deal with the drivers. If they can do that, performance will certainly go up for everyone, especially ones who don't have the absolute fastest CPU. And of course if S3 can/does get T&L going on the Viper II, that will also take the geometry load off of the CPU in supporting games.

So is the Viper II for you? That is the big question, and I don't think anyone can honestly answer it right now. There is certainly a lot of potential with it, if S3 can get the drivers in line and up to speed and the T&L engine active. That is the big thing. S3 certainly doesn't have the best reputation for drivers, but with Diamond now a part of them hopefully they can get things together and deliver some very solid ones soon. If they can do that, they'll have a great product. However, if they can't, they'll have seriously hurt their reputation and will make their next round of products a much harder sell.

The Register bericht dat AMD volgens een onderzoek van Mercury Research nu 17% van de x86 markt in handen heeft, een toename van 36% in 3 maanden:

US market research company Mercury is reporting that AMD now has a 17 per cent share of the x.86 market, a jump of nearly five per cent in a quarter.

That will give Intel room for thought as it digests how well it performed in its Q4 results, reported yesterday evening.

A report in today's Wall Street Journal says that Intel's share for the x.86 microprocessor market slipped during the quarter, while AMD's showed gains. The last quarter Mercury Research reported showed that AMD had 12.5 per cent market share.

Bij Overclockers Australia hebben ze een comparison neer gemikt tussen 4 nieuwe Pentium 3 coolers, de UltraCool UC-S2, UltraCool UC-S2 modified, RDJD P301 en de RDJD P302. De aangepaste UC-S2 van Ultracool bleek het best uit de test:

Well, the RDJD units show themselves to be quite respectable if not spectacular. The P302 is about a degree cooler than the P301 so it appears there really is a difference between the units. The fan RDJD uses is loud though, there's a definite low-pitched buzzing sound. Given they're the same cost as the standard UltraCool unit which is better and quieter, it's hard to recommend them.

Reversing the fan didn't have a positive effect on any of the units, noise or cooling-wise.. There's some wind noise from the big fan on the modified UltraCool, of course, but it's a fairly unobtrusive hiss - and the cooling performance is very impressive. In fact, even in standard form the unit offers surprisingly good cooling. If you wanted to go for the big monster (another for the clear perspex case?) the modified UltraCool, or "Mega 80mm P3 Cooler" as it's called on the website, is probably a pretty good buy.

Onze kleine vriend Anand heeft een review op zijn site gemikt van Elsa's Erazor X2 GeForce DDR videokaart. Hieronder wat over zijn overklokbaarheid, die niet echt opgeilend schijnt te zijn:

Unlike their ERAZOR X drivers, the ERAZOR X2 drivers did not come with an overclocking utility which forced us to use Power Strip to attempt to overclock the card. As with all overclocking, the standard disclaimer, your mileage may vary, must be issued. In the case of the ERAZOR X2, you’re going to be hoping that your mileage does in fact vary as we were only able to increase the core clock speed of the GeForce to 130MHz from the 120MHz default setting.

While the chip was able to reach 135MHz core, the test system would lock up under Quake III Arena after a few loops of any demo. This indicates that the problem was most likely a heat related issue, adding a bit of thermal compound or a superior heatsink/fan could help achieve this speed.

At 130MHz, the performance gains are minimal. While this does increase the peak fill rate of the GeForce from 480 Mpixel/s to 520 Mpixel/s, it doesn’t make that big of a difference in real world gaming performance.

As we mentioned earlier the card featured 6ns DDR SGRAM memory manufactured by Infineon. The 6ns rating would ideally allow for clock speeds up to 166MHz, which when operating in DDR mode would produce an effective transfer rate equal to that of 333MHz SGRAM.

The 166MHz setting was the highest we were able to push the 6ns Infineon DDR SGRAM to which was pretty much expected. The performance improvement was noticeable but not tremendous but since it came without the sacrifice of stability you can consider it to be something for nothing.

DemoNews heeft een review in elkaar gedraaid over een vrij onbekende GeForce kaart, de Outrageous 3D GeForce 256 met DDR geheugen, die pas rond deze tijd leverbaar wordt. Voor $325 Dollar is hij vrij prijzig te noemen, je krijgt er echter wel 3 games naar keuze bij .

You can actually buy 3 of these titles for just £54.99 or four of them for £64.99. And the best of all, you can pick on for FREE if you buy this card. That's a great deal you get there.

Along with the board you get 3 OEM titles and WINDVD+MP3 Software.

Features and such
Well, the Outrageous 3D GeForce 256 cards is featured with an s-video out port on the back. Many card manufactors doesn't send the needed s-video cable, but Absolute Multimedia does and that's a good sign of a thoughtful company who wants the buyer to be pleased and able to use all the features the card have. Many of those who buy a graphic card never goes to the closest computer store and tries to find the special cable that is needed, now you don't have to do that and it's just for you to plug the cable into your video tape recorder and start playing on your big TV.

Computer Games Online heeft een review klaarliggen van de Hercules 3D Prophet DDR-DVI GeForce videokaart. De kaart wordt hier vergeleken met een Baseline TNT2 Ultra videokaart, helaas geen overclocking resultaten.

The 3D Prophet delivers the same superb level of image quality we've come to expect from GeForce-based products. Colors are clean and texture filtering is very good. DVD playback quality is excellent, and the included Xing DVD player software works quite well. Driver stability is also quite good, with no weird conflicts or crashes evident after lots of testing (at least, no more than we normally see from buggy games or windows errors).

This is the Rolls Royce of video cards, in a way. It's based on the fastest video chip around with DDR memory, and includes both a DVI connector and TV output. You've got to pay through the nose for it, though. After the $20 mail-in rebate the card still costs $300, and there's no value added from the skimpy software bundle, which consists of DVD player software and demos for four already released Ubi Soft games. If you're building a no-holds-barred, price-is-no-object machine, this is the card to put in it. Most users will probably rather go with something a little more economical, though.

Hullie wilde even kwijt dat je bij Deafening Silence een performance vergelijking kan vinden tussen een GeForce kaart met verschillende Detonator drivers (3.53, 3.62, 3.65 en 3.68). Het blijkt dat de 3.53 drivers het snelste zijn met zo'n 6% gemiddeld (gemeten onder 3DMark 2000). Dit verschil kan nu echter verklaard worden doordat dynamic lighting in die versie niet werkte.

It's surprising but the 3.53 drivers significantly outperformed the other detonator drivers (6% faster). After I completed all the tests, I retested the 3.53 drivers to make sure I didn't make a mistake. Nope, no mistakes...they are faster. A good portion of that increase may be attributed to the much higher CPU Marks. What did they do differently? All the drivers since then have performed about the same. Unfortunately, the Elsa drivers take another 6% performance hit. However, the 3.53 and Elsa drivers have much better 2D quality at the 1152x864 that I normally use. With the exception of the 3.53 drivers (which exhibited some tearing in Quake 3 demo), there were no game problems with any of the other drivers. Ultimately, every system is different and drivers may act differently on your system.

Update 1: It appears that the performance increase seen with the 3.53 drivers is because dynamic lighting was broken. When nVidia fixed dynamic lighting in the 3.6X drivers, there was a corresponding performance drop. However, in many games, dynamic lighting is crucial, looks great and therefore worth the hit.

Update 2: Ignoring the 3.53 drivers, with the tests that 3D Mark 2000 uses, there "appears" to be no performance improvements in each new driver release. I say "appears" because there may be things happening beneath the hood. I guess I'll have to test the drivers again and look at things like fill rate and polygon throughput.

Intel turned in good gains for its financial quarter to the end of its fourth quarter, with revenues rising by eight per cent to $8.2 billion, compared to $7.61 billion for the equivalent quarter last year.

Net profit for the quarter amounted to $2.11 billion, compared to $2.06 billion for the equivalent period in the last quarter last year.

Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel, said that his company's networking, wireless and internet businesses were likely to grow by as much as 50 per cent during the course of this year.

Barrett, however, warned that seasonal factors would make Intel's Q1 this year slightly weaker than the results for Q4.

Those seasonal factors are likely to be insufficiency of Intel's new Coppermine processors.

But chief financial officer Andy Bryant said that Intel's current inventory was not what the company desired during the period, although the .18 micron Coppermine process had successfully ramped during the period.

Plans for the coming year included the introduction of .13 micron technology, he said in a conference call.
