This is paired with an FM radio application, so you can listen to your favorite tunes as well. I didn’t really use the FM tuner much, as it was much easier to just use my PC to play mp3s when I wanted to listen to music. The two tuner program allow you to change their appearance via "skins" a refreshing change for those of us that are sick of the Microsoft way of looking at your applications.

Capturing video, and sending it back out to tape worked out quite well, using Video Studio’s included wizard. Not much to say here except that you are limited to a resolution of 320 by 240 for video capture. I thought that the quality of the capture was exceptional given this limitation.

Once installed, the AquaStealth performed well. It's designed to keep your CPU at around ambient temperature and is not meant to be a “super-cooling” device (a cooler that keeps your CPU below room temperature). While the AquaStealth does a good job at keeping the temperature down, do not expect miracles from your CPU. Keeping a CPU at around room temperature will give you just about the maximum potential it can offer, but not any more than the L2 cache, core or other system components can take. Every CPU is different, however, and your results may vary.

Overlooking the competition, there is not one single card capable of outperforming the WinFast DDR based board at the moment. If you were to purchase on a price/performance comparison, the only possible competitor would be the S3 Viper II IF they get their act together and strengthen those drivers to increase overall performance and enable T&L capabilities. The ATI Rage Fury MAXX may come to mind but the problem with this board is its hefty price tag that doesn't provide T&L just yet or proof that it's fill-rate performance will ever match that of the DDR GeForce. Other than that, there isn't much of a solution unless you're looking for a dirt-cheap card where 3D isn't that important. The Leadtek was the first officially released DDR GeForce board tested in our labs and I can safely say that I highly endorse the purchase of this card for the high-end gamer. The Leadtek WinFast 256 GeForce DDR board is a very powerful graphics card and is an awesome upgrade to any system that is used for 3D gaming applications. If this weren't the case, I wouldn't have one installed in my home system for my nightly Quake Arena frag-fest action .

Laurence Rogerson, a consultant and director at Web firm Hubcom, said yesterday that he had encountered several Y2K related problems with version 3.0 of VB.

He said: "If you open up the immediate window and type in ? Year("3/1/00"), it returns 1900". He said that testing he had performed on one application which was built with VB 3.0 and uses some old VBX support files, queried one database for names between October 1899 and January 1900. It then bombed out because none were returned, he said.

Rogerson added that VB 3.0 was used in many corporate environments to develop applications. "It surprised me when I discovered the problem as I just assumed it would apply the current century to a two digit date but it seems that it doesn't," he said. "It works OK with a 4 digit year though, e.g.: ? Year("2/1/2000") => 2000 as does ? Year(Now())."

In the end of winter and beginning of spring the graphics cards manufacturers presented the first results of their hard efforts not to be late with their solutions for the first chipset supporting AGP 4x, which was expected to come out in the beginning of summer. Everybody impatiently waited for i820. Here the most remarkable results showed S3, which appeared the first to announce its AGP 4x chip - Savage4 (and now remember who was the first in the end of summer to introduce a chip with the geometric coprocessor? We wonder if Savage2000 will accurately follow its predecessor in all other terms as well.).

At that time 3dfx was planning the Voodoo3 cards family. In March NVIDIA announced its new TNT2 - a 0.25 micron TNT version, a bit faster and a bit different from the previous one. The first graphics cards on TNT2 Ultra went for $200-230. ATI decided not to announce any new chips and simply added AGP 4x to its already existing family: Rage 128 GL 4X and Rage 128 VR 4X. This time when everybody started presenting faster chips, this company again went along the most pragmatic way: they introduced Rage Fury MAXX with the two already available Rage 128 Pro. In February Videologic announced Neon250. Having survived numerous delays it finally started selling in mass in the very end of August, exactly a year later than it had been initially planned.

Slashdot heeft een interview gepost met Steve Wozniak, mede oprichter van Apple. In goede Slashdot traditie werden de vragen samengesteld door /. bezoekers:

What's your take on the use of LinuxPPC vs. the MacOS? Many people say that Mac hardware is (and always has been) better than x86, but it's been held back by the OS. Do you think that LinuxPPC can change that?

Woz: Many of the hardware advantages that Apple has is due to it's being more tightly controlled by Apple and in it's being more tightly integrated with the software. That allows Apple to make hardware changes and decisions that are more reliable than in the Wintel world. This has nothing to do with Linux and everything to do with MacOS. The basic plumbing is superior to Intel hardware in some ways (firewire on the motherboard for example) and a bit lacking in others (3D rendering hardware) but the basic performance advantage goes to the RISC architecture of the PowerPC processor. Intel's response to this is that even if RISC is 40% faster, that only amounts to a few months lead, according to Moore's Law.

If you consider attractiveness and other external qualities, you can't find any hardware that comes close to Apple's. That's because even companies like Sony, that truly care about the user experience, can't do much about the internal hardware (buying it from Intel like every other manufacturer). Also, companies like Sony are in competition with many very cutrate prices in a commodity market. The internal hardware supplier can't do much about the external quality either.

LinuxPPC certainly has the capability of improving the hardware efficiency and preventing some very bad things from happening and allowing software to behave in more expectable ways. It's hard to say that a great deal of the buyers are much influenced by these things or we wouldn't have so much successful crap around. The Macintosh market would probably be prime and ready for LinuxPPC but it probably needs more ease of setup. Also, other UNIX variants (Like Mach Ten) are available already and only marginally used by Macintosh owners. The performance of MacOS X Server is already quite incredible, and the [largely] Open Source MacOS X Client is coming in the summer.

GamePC heeft een review gepost van de Elsa Gloria II, een videokaart met nVidia Quadro chipset en 64Mb SDRAM. De bijgeleverde drivers werden door Elsa specifiek geoptimaliseerd voor 3D Modelling proggies zoals 3D Studio Max. Helaas heeft GamePC geen 3D Modelling benchmarks (wel een 3DMax render benchmark, maar daar wordt de videokaart niet voor gebruikt). In de game benchmarks presteert de Quadro ongeveer op vergelijkbaar niveau als de normale GeForce.

At first glance, we thought we were looking at the wrong card. The GLoria II is astonishingly small for a 64MB video card, usually 64MB+ professional video cards take up full length slots and barely fit in most cases. This card, with twice the RAM as a normal GeForce, is quite a bit smaller than any we've tested. Elsa's custom card design, combined with large 8MB memory chips (most video cards have 2 or 4 MB chips) allow for this card to be nice and small, while staying just as powerful. The heatsink/fan combination is a little larger than your standard video card cooling set, seems the higher clock speed calls for a slightly larger heatsink than GeForce cards.

Elsa has long been known for their custom driver sets, and of course, this tradition lives on with the GLoria. Elsa includes their PowerDraft drivers, for hardware acceleration for AutoCad 2K, as well as MAXExtreme, for accelerated 3D Studio performance. Elsa includes all of these in a single bundle, known as the Elsa WINMan Suite. We've seen better software suites, after all, this same software has been included with all of Elsa's previous boards, it's just modified a little bit for the GLoria.

Following the trend of many recent applications, namely digital audio players, Netscape Communicator 5.0 will support customization of its interface, using 'skins.' The Mozilla team is currently working on the feature and is expected to have it completed for the final release. At the moment, the user must put the images in the correct folder and edit the preferences file manually. However, the feature will eventually be an option within Navigator's preferences dialog and skins will function as a single file, much like Winamp does with WSZ.

3D Colony heeft een review van de Elsa Erazor X neer gemikt. Dit GeForce kaartje bleek met een maximale core/mem setting van 148/180Mhz redelijk goed overklokbaar te zijn:

This is usually the part you freaks like to read. I know, I'm one too. I'm sure you all know that overclocking you card might damage it! Atleast you reduce the lifespan of it. ELSA Erazor X did overclock pretty well! I tried first to raise it to 183MHz (maximum for this card) but saw instantly graphical anomalies on the desktop. The MHz was too high so I reduced it to 180MHz and everything seemed to work fine. Next up I started to raise the corespeed. I fired it up to 150MHz and ran the Q3A timedemo1 couple of times. The system locked up. I then reduced the core to 148MHz and no lockups occured anymore. So I got the ELSA Erazor X to run flawlessly at 148Mhz core and 180MHz memory. You will see in the benchmarks that overclocking this card gives you a slight performance boost in higher resolutions. In lower resolutions the results are pretty much the same with a non-overclocked card.

AnandTech heeft een review van de ATi Rage Fury MAXX gepost. Deze kaart maakt gebruik van twee Rage Pro chips die ieder een frame tegelijkertijd renderen. Hierdoor ontstaat er in theorie een kleine lag omdat de relatief trage Rage Pro tweemaal zo lang over een frame doet als een GeForce:

We'll first state that a number of gamers were given the opportunity to play a few games of Quake 3 on the MAXX, followed by a game on an NVIDIA GeForce. None of them noticed any lag issues, whether they were on a LAN game or a modem game (of course the modem itself introduced lag). Playing at high resolutions or low resolutions did not have any effect either. In fact, even with all this talk on the internet, we've yet to see claims of anyone actually feeling the lag - it has all been theoretical so far.

Our take on the situation is this: a "normal" 3D card is actually already rendering the next frame while the current one is being displayed. This technique is called double buffering and is used by all current 3D accelerators. An optional mode of many cards is the use of triple buffering, where one frame is being displayed while two more are being rendered. Sound of kind of like the MAXX? You bet. In essence, you can think of the MAXX as performing a complex version of triple buffering. Of course, there have never been any complaints or issues with triple buffering, so there shouldn't be any with the MAXX either. As far as we're concerned, the issue of lag is a no longer an issue with the MAXX.

Firingsquad heeft een review van de Hercules / Guillemot 3D Prophet DDR-DVI online gezet. Het exemplaar dat door Firingsquad werd getest bleek, net als 3D Prophet's uit eerdere reviews, uitermate goed overklokbaar te zijn:

We enthusiastically began our overclocking tests, eager to see how high our 3D Prophet DDR would go. Since the overclocking slider runs up to a very generous 380MHz memory and 160MHz core, we knew we'd have to start off with something easier, like the 150 core/183 memory our Elsa board ran at. As testing went on and the card continued to run stable, we found ourselves clocking the card higher and higher. By the time overclocking tests were complete, our 3D Prophet DDR-DVI clocked to 160MHz core/360MHz memory! Did Guillemot slip us a golden sample? If so, thanks, we appreciate it!

The Select PC line, which will be for consumers and small businesses, will offer a range of Athlon speeds, sources said. However, details on the exact configurations and pricing were not available at press time.

The announcement will give consumers a wider range of choice among vendors from which they can purchase Athlon-based PCs. At the same time, it renews the relationship between AMD (NYSE: AMD) and Gateway, giving Gateway a second source for high-performance PC processors.

CPU Review heeft een artikel gepost over het nieuws van EETimes dat UMC begin volgend jaar een 0,13micron koper produktieproces in gebruik zal nemen. CPU Review speculeert dat dit proces mogelijk gebruikt zal worden door Transmeta, VIA of zelfs AMD (thanks AVL voor de link):

The following is purely speculation, but maybe they will fab for Transmeta? That's a potential match made in heaven; 0.13um devices could be used for low-power applications, which Transmeta appears to be targeting - not to mention that it would allow for some truly impressive clock rates!

Don't forget, there is also Rise and Via; they could use access to such a process for their processors! Heck, even AMD might want to use some of the production capacity of that plant.

It seems that the AMD Northbridge chip on the motherboard gets very hot very quickly in intensive graphics apps (games). Having a very large CPU cooler OVER THE TOP of this chip doesn`t aid cooling! Getting a CPU cooler which doesnt cover the Northbridge chip seems to keep this chip cooler. Also, reduce memory/pci voltage down to 3.3v (default is 3.4volts).
