Uit de nieuwste cijfers van Netcraft blijkt dat het marktaandeel van de gratis Apache webserver over de maand november - na 5 achtereenvolgende maanden van verval - eindelijk weer is toegenomen . During the month promotion commenced for the second Apache conference to be run in Florida next March. It is interesting to see that Sun , traditionally thought of as tightly aligned with Netscape, is adopting a more encouraging outlook towards Apache and is a conference sponsor.

Large Scale Hosting

Last month we reported that webjump.com was one of the first large hosting systems [with well over 300,000 sites] to be deployed on NT. Several people have since pointed out that Webjump is actually a hybrid system with static content run from NT and dynamic content delivered from a conventional Solaris/Apache/perl system.

In the upshot of the publicity of the Webjump system, several companies changed their DNS configurations to enable Netcraft to retrieve DNS information for their web hosts and include their sites in the survey; the largest of these, hypermart.net was too late for inclusion in the November survey, but is likely to add several hundred thousand in December. hypermart.net provides free business site hosting on a Linux/Apache platform.

Intel based systems have done very well in hosting scenarios over the last two years, and this trend is likely to continue, both as a platform for the freely available Linux and FreeBSD operating systems and for Windows 2000 with the new Microsoft operating system now being heavily promoted as scaling to high availability and high performance hosting scenarios.

Ik zie dat de gasten van Overclockers Australia een review online geknikkerd hebben van de Asus V6600 Deluxe GeForce 256 videokaart. De reviewer kreeg de kaart zover dat hij op 160/210MHz een Quake 3 demo kon draaien, maar de performance winst is zo klein dat het het risico niet waard was (de kaart werd nogal warm). At the end of the day, I was left with an overall very good impression of the ASUS AGP-V6600 Deluxe. Performance wise, the higher factory default clock speeds certainly push it above the V6600 'Pure' version. The video input capabilities of the card are good enough for the odd snapshot or .AVI, and the output is great for Quaking on the big screen. The supplied video utilities are fairly comprehensive too. I would have liked the V6600 Deluxe to be fitted with DDR RAM, but ASUS are saving that for a V6800 board, which unfortunately will not include all the extra video functionality.

In the rapidly moving 3D video market, GeForce is the current 3D King, and the ASUS AGP-V6600 Deluxe is shaping into perhaps the best GeForce equipped board for overall functionality, flexibility, and performance. Keep an eye out at EYO Technologies for a release date and pricing. Keep in mind also that this was a pre-release model so there may be minor changes to the production unit.

Sench had te melden dat WebWereld een artikel gepost heeft over het Worm.ExploreZip, een variant van het Worm virus dat afgelopen zomer actief was.

In juni kreeg een destructief virus genaamd Worm.ExploreZip veel aandacht, zelfs dagbladen schreven erover (zie nieuws van 11 juni). In enigszins aangepaste vorm is deze worm bezig met een comeback. Antivirussoftware herkent de worm namelijk vaak nog niet.

Bedrijven als Network Associates, Trend Micro en McAfee zeggen veel meldingen van bedrijven te krijgen die al besmet zijn met de metabolische worm. Makers van antivirussoftware zijn dan ook in de hoogste staat van paraatheid.

Minizip – zoals de nieuwe versie heet – kan net als haar zomerse voorganger bestanden wissen en automatisch geïnfecteerde boodschappen sturen via e-mail. De boodschap luidt dan: "Hi (naam ontvanger)! I received your e-mail and I shall send you a reply ASAP. Till then, take a look at the attached zipped docs."

Als de naïeve ontvanger deze bestanden daadwerkelijk probeert te openen, begint de ellende. Alhoewel de computer mededeelt dat de bestanden niet kunnen worden geopend, gebeurt dit wel. Met als gevolg gewiste bestanden.

Veiligheidsexperts raden - zoals altijd - aan de laatste updates van antivirussoftware te downloaden. Verder is het natuurlijk altijd raadzaam geen bestanden die via verdachte e-mails worden verstuurd, te openen.

Deze schijf wordt door Western Digital als 'value-class' SCSI drive op de markt geplant, dit ondanks z'n hoge rotatiensnelheid van 10.000 toeren per minuut. Verder heeft-ie een 2Mb cache en een seek-time van 6,6ms

It's safe to say, of course, that WD didn't create the Vantage to compete against the Enterprise 10k or any other 10k rpm disk for that matter. The company is quick to emphasize that the drive is priced to compete with and top today's 7200rpm drives. The best-of-class 7200rpm drive as of this writing is the Quantum Atlas IV. So, how does the Vantage stack up?

WinBench99 tests under Windows 9x display modest gains, 3% increases in both the Business and High-End WinMarks. Differences under NT are a bit more meaty, yielding an 11% Business difference and 13% in the High-End. Likewise, ThreadMark shows differences in the teens, the Vantage leading the Atlas by 11% in Win9x and 16% in NT.

The first thing that surpised me when I plugged this puppy in was that the wheel automatically calibrates itself. When you boot up, the wheel turns by itself all the way to one side, then the other, then to the center. For some reason I found that very cool. I guess I'm easily amused.

This wheel uses the I-Force system from a company called Immersion. Although I-Force is one of two standards (the other is from Microsoft), it's drivers work with just about any game that can use a force feedback controller. I tried it out with Need For Speed: High Stakes, and the included Sports Car GT, and also the demo version of Re-Volt. While it worked well in Re-Volt and Sports Car GT, the effects were most prominent in Need For Speed. Something I didn't even realize until playing Need For Speed with the wheel, is that when you do thing like hit trees, it actually damages your car. The car becomes harder to control (depending what is damaged), and you start to feel all sorts of strange bumps through the steering wheel. If you get too much damage, it can actually become quite difficult to steer properly. I found the force feedback effect in Need For Speed was too strong, and actually had to turn it down a bit, something which is quite easy to do.

My first thought on using the wheel in Need For Speed was "this is no easier than using the joystick", until I figured out why I was having so many problems. Trying to drive an F-50 down a winding country road without taking your foot off the gas, wheel or no wheel, you're going to hit the guardrail an awful lot. Once I learned to liberally apply the brake, my driving improved by orders of magnitude.

The feedback effects really are quite something. When the road turns to cobblestone, the wheel vibrates very realistically, and if you sideswipe a wall or a tree, it jerks the wheel to the side. Every bump in the road is felt, as well as the car's engine.

The truth though is that, compared to PC100 SDRAM, RDRAM works, and works well. Any time technology evolves to new levels it's often painful for the manufacturer and the consumer alike, and the royalties that must be paid by RDRAM manufacturers to 'license' the rights to produce the new memory can't have helped this process.

But the fact is that when games and other apps debut that offer visually enhanced play modes that require AGP4X support, PC100 and PC133 SDRAM using PCs won't come within 25% of the frame rates that an RDRAM-powered PC will be able to generate.

Uit de benchmarks blijkt dat de Vancouver 820 inderdaad zo'n 10% sneller is als het Cape Cod bord met SDRAM. Jammer dat er geen benchmarks van een plank met een BX of Apollo Pro 133 chipset bij zitten, want uit eerdere reviews van de CC820 is gebleken dat dit bord in vergelijking met de oude BX chipset eerder trager is dan sneller (dit vanwege de tussenliggende memory hub die de i820 chipset geschikt maakt voor SDRAM).

3dfx heeft nieuwe drivers gebakken voor de Voodoo3 2000/3000. Met deze release komen ze op versie 1.03.04. Hieronder een lijst met veranderingen:

Anand heeft een review van de 3DLabs Oxygen GVX1, een professionele 3D modelling kaart, op z'n site gezet. Interessant is de vergelijking met de veel goedkopere GeForce, die blijkt in veel genamelijk namelijk gewoon bruut sneller te zijn dan de Oxygen:

Unfortunately there is a threat to 3Dlabs and the GVX1, it is in the form of NVIDIA's GeForce. We have already made it clear that the GeForce obviously has some issues with wireframe AA rendering as well as dropping pixels in various rendering situations. A driver fix has yet to appear and we most likely won't see on for the GeForce, if one is even possible. NVIDIA doesn't want the GeForce competing on this level, instead they have another child to bring into the professional market, the Quadro.

The Quadro supposedly isn't plagued by the accuracy and quality problems of the GeForce, but the chip itself isn't very different from the GeForce at all. The main difference seems to be the drivers. NVIDIA isn't letting just anyone produce Quadro based cards either, only ELSA, a company that has a long history of specializing in workstation level products and drivers. So don't be too surprised if NVIDIA's Quadro comes out to be a very good competitor in this market, provided that the drivers are sound and capable of meeting the demands of professional users.

That report said that some Coppermine processors intermittently seize up between power-up and power-down cycles. The problem applies only to some Coppermine processors according to the report.

Now, an Intel representative has confirmed there is a problem with Coppermine processors and said the bug will be fixed in the next stepping (Intel calls chip bugs errata.) In the meantime, it is tightening up its quality control checks.

He said: "An intermittent issue which resulted in failure to start the boot process was reported in lab environments on a very small number of "Coppermine" (0.18-micron) Pentium® III processor-based systems. The issue does not result in any data corruption." [break] Verder kwam ik bij JC nog wat handig Coppermine/Athlon/Gateway nieuws tegen: [/break] "We have heard that yields, even as of a few weeks ago, were running at unacceptably low levels". 2CPU.com heeft een artikel in elkaar geklust met benchmarks van Q3Test onder Windows Millenium build 2419 en Win2k RC2 build 2128. Onder Windows 2000 werd gekeken naar het voordeel van de "r_smp 1" setting. Op hogere resoluties blijkt er nauwelijks verschil te zijn en is Windows Millenium zelfs sneller dan Windows 2000 met SMP:

I hope all of you jumping on the Win2k bandwagon will test your frame rates in both Win98 and Win2k especially if you do not have 2 processors. 15fps is a pretty hefty difference between you getting a frag or becoming one. With 2 processors the story changes a little at low resolutions, Being able to break 100+fps is quite nice too bad the results are not as stellar at higher resolutions. I expect these numbers will be pushed higher when Win2k goes gold. Then Nvidia can optimize its drivers and Id will have chance to tweak Q3 for Win2k.

Nemesis stuurde een link naar dit artikel waarin ze uitleggen hoe je een Alpha P3125 cooler passend op je Asus K7M plank kan planten. Dit is normaal gesproken niet mogelijk door de plaatsing van de ATX power connector aan de verkeerde kant.

The main problem with Asus K7M is the ATX power connector is on the wrong side of the slot one rail. Big coolers like the Alpha P125 or Global Win FKK32 will completely block off the power connector. Since moving power connector is not an option (well, it is but I'm not going to try it), I came up with a new way to get the Alpha on the Athlon and clear that ATX connector.

The easiest way to get an Alpha to an Athlon would be to use an Alpha P125 because it snaps right in with no modifications required. This is because the Athlon uses the same mounting system as the Pentium II and the Alpha P125 is a PII cooler. However using a P125 on the Athlon and an Asus K7M is not an option because that ATX power connector is in the way.

The solution I came up with is to use an Alpha P3125 that was recently reviewed. The reason will become clear in a bit. Since the P3125 was designed for Pentium IIIs and not Athlon CPUs, I had to modify the heatsink so it would work with the AMD CPU. The end results is one cool running Athlon.

Het is dus niet zo dat OpenGL niet werkt onder Win2k, maar 3dfx en nVidia e.d. zullen de OpenGL support zelf in de drivers moeten gooien.

Ok, I've done a bit more investigation on the Quake3 release date. As we know Christian from id was quoted yesterday as saying 'next week' (Christian followed up with comment #307) which differs from the original given date from Activision of the 12th. I've been hearing rumbles everywhere from retailers however claiming that they will have Quake3 on shelves as early as this friday. I just got off the phone with one of the 'higher-ups' at Activision who made it pretty clear that they can not give any comments on the release, it was a pretty strange conversation with me trying ten different ways to squeeze any kind of release info out of him. The id CEO (Todd) is out of the country right now so I cant get a hold of him, sorry.

Basically, several signs are pointing at a release date of Quake3 this Friday or through the weekend and showing up on Monday. What is also interesting is the Activision rep told me that an initial run of 1,000,000 copies of Quake3 being sent out for distribution would 'not be surprising given the market'. Koen Crijns, bekend van Hardwareinfo.net, heeft weer een nieuwe review in elkaar gedraaid van een Athlon plaat, ditmaal de Asus K7M. Qua overklokkken kwam Koen iets verder dan gemiddeld, 113MHz was het maximale wat eruit te persen was:

Aangezien het K7M moederbord het eerste AMD Athlon moederbord is dat overklokken mogelijk maakt, was ik natuurlijk erg benieuwd tot hoever onze AMD Athlon 600 MHz CPU het zou uithouden. ASUS heeft gelukkig alle businstellingen tussen de 100 MHz en de 125 MHz geïntegreerd (op de 1 MHz nauwkeurig) zodat je makkelijk op zoek kunt gaan naar de beste instellingen. Persoonlijk bleef ik steken bij de 110 MHz, wat een AMD Athlon 660 MHz als resultaat heeft. Bij 111 MHz werkte Windows verre van stabiel en bij 113 MHz weigerde het systeem überhaupt op te starten. Met het toepassen van Voltage Tweaking bleef de CPU zelfs t/m 113 MHz stabiel werken. Hier was een voltage van 1.8 Volt voor nodig. 114 MHz was met 1.8 Volt niet haalbaar en verdere Voltage Tweaking voer ik persoonlijk liever niet uit. De FSB van 113 MHz zorgt voor een AMD Athlon 678 MHz. De CPU draaide echt 100% stabiel op 113 MHz FSB (hij heeft de nodige uren RC5 blokjes staan kraken, voor de insiders). Wat wel opviel is dat het moederbord bij het booten altijd de verkeerde CPU-snelheid aangaf. In het geval van 660 MHz vond de BIOS dat er een 666 MHz aanwezig was en bij 678 MHz zei de BIOS zelfs 700 MHz. Het programma WCPUID (downloadbaar van www.h-oda.com) brengt echter altijd uitkomst.
