McMiGHtY bracht ons richting dit nieuwsbericht van InfoWorld NL, over de toekomst van de chipindustrie. Volgens de Semiconductor Industry Association, een belangenclub voor chipfabrikanten, zullen de prestaties van computerchips de komende jaren vrolijk blijven toenemen:

Technologiestrateeg Paolo Gargini van Intel zei tegenover de Amerikaanse krant The Wall Street Journal dat geheugenchips in het jaar 2014 bestaan uit 64 miljard transistors. Dit is duizend maal zoveel als de huidige geheugenchips bevatten. "De snelheid van de processors neemt daarnaast toe tot kloksnelheden van 3,6 gigahertz (ofwel 3600 MHz). De maximale snelheid ligt momenteel op ongeveer 750 MHz", aldus Gargini.

De gasten van Target PC hebben een water cooling guide in elkaar gedouwd. Na wat gepiel lukte het ze om een Celeron 433 op 728MHz te draaien. Helaas was het niet echt stabiel te noemen:

After some time for the CPU to get back to normal (sounds bizarre I know, but my 300a did the same thing. After first running it at 450 for a while it would no longer run 300 at default voltage. After a cpl of days it was fine..) we tried booting windows with the default L2 latency (5?) and it booted and ran perfectly. No weird errors, no crashes. Water in the reservoir is at 3degrees and slowly rising. After satisfying ourselves it was solid, numerous Synthetic CPU benches in 3DMark 99, and a cpl of runs through SiSoft Sandra 99 is enough for the moment, we tried for 6.5x112=728. Success! Of a sort. It POSTs at 728 every time, but won't boot windows. Ah well, might try again tomorrow with some actual PC100 ram. I really hope we can get this baby stable at 728. I haven't heard of *any* other 433 running over 700. Would be very sweet indeed.

Bij 3D Wars hebben ze eens gekeken naar de financiële positie van nVidia. In tegenstelling tot 3dfx gaat het aandeel nVidia errug lekker:

Nvidia is publicly traded on the NASDAQ under the symbol NVDA. Currently, Nvidia stock is being traded around the 37 Dollar per share mark. 37 Dollars is quite a bit for a graphics card company such as Nvidia. Well, needless to say, it hasn't always been this way. When Nvidia first went public in January of this year, their stock was being traded around 20 Dollars. That average is near the maximum amount that 3dfx's stock has ever been. Over the course of several months, it stayed the same. Yet, once Nvidia made the GeForce 256 GPU official, their stock took a major turn for the better. Booming up to about 35 dollars and rising, Nvidia's future began to look very good. However, as I stated in the previous Financial Update, stocks do not give an accurate depiction of a company's standing. Is there a difference in this case? Lets find out...

Although Nvidia would not comment on why their stock has been doing so well, it's pretty obvious to see. Even though it cannot be narrowed down to one reason alone, it has a big thing to do with timing. Nvidia has a product in the next generation line and 3dfx does not. Consumers want what is hot and they want it now, thus having a company that can provide for that will be a more affluent company. Easy enough...Nvidia is doing very well in this industry. However, this can't last forever...or can it?

29 nov, 11:38 - Europees commissaris voor Ondernemingsbeleid en informatiemaatschappij Erkki Liikanen wil zich gaan inzetten voor een .eu-domeinnaam. De Europese Commissie wil de regulator van domeinnamen, ICANN, vragen het nieuwe topleveldomein aan de commissie toe te wijzen. Het Britse advocatenkantoor Dibb Lupton Alsop (DLA) en de Europese organisatie van Internetproviders, EuroISPA, hebben Liikanen gewezen op de mogelijkheid om het .eu-domein te registeren.

DLA heeft, zo meldt Internetnieuwsdienst Silicon News, aan Liikanen een brief verzonden waarin hem het voorstel werd uitgelegd voor de .eu-domeinnaam: "Met meer dan zeven miljoen .com-domeinnamen is er vanuit bedrijven die aan e-commerce mee willen doen vraag naar nieuwe Internetadressen. Deze bedrijven lopen dikwijls tegen al in gebruikzijnde adressen aan. Er is dus dringend behoefte aan nieuwe internationale Internetadressen", aldus DLA. Volgens DLA worstelen Internetgebruikers daarnaast met de wirwar aan Europese domeinnaamextensies zoals .co.uk voor Groot-Brittannië en .nl voor Nederland.

De letters eu mogen tot nu toe alleen gebruikt worden voor de euro en voor de aandelenhandel. Wanneer de letters eu beschikbaar komen als domeinextensie is nog onbekend. Dit hangt af van het besluit van de Europese lidstaten, aldus een woordvoerder van de Europese Commissie.

Arjan stuurde een link naar dit nieuwsbericht van Planet Internet over de ADSL verbinding van KPN. De service zal in het begin (vanaf maart) alleen in de grotere steden aangeboden worden. Aan het eind van 2000 moeten veel meer steden zijn aangesloten en zullen ook World Online en Sonera met een ADSL abonnement komen.

AMSTERDAM (ANP) - De lange wachttijden op internet lijken voorbij. Telecombedrijf KPN heeft dinsdag de langverwachte komst van supersnelle internetverbindingen via de telefoonkabel aangekondigd. Vooralsnog beperkt KPN het snelle internet tot de grote steden.

In maart kunnen inwoners van Utrecht, Amsterdam en Rotterdam dankzij ADSL vliegensvlug het internet op. ADSL is minstens tien keer zo snel als de standaard telefoonmodemverbinding.

ADSL zal voorlopig niet landelijk dekkend worden, zegt KPN. Tegen het einde van 2000 moeten alle grote en middelgrote steden aangesloten zijn. Per telefooncentrale wordt bekeken of het genoeg plevert.

De telecomreus heeft met verschillende internetaanbieders afspraken gemaakt over het aanbieden van de nieuwe techniek. Niet alleen KPN-dochters Planet Internet en XS4ALL komen er begin volgend jaar mee, ook met World Online en Sonera is een overeenkomst gesloten.

ADSL is vooral interessant voor de zware gebruikers. Een abonnement gaat in totaal ongeveer 100 gulden per maand kosten. Een normale internetgebruiker kan voor dat geld 83 uur surfen. Bovendien vergt ADSL een speciaal modem dat ruim 300 gulden kost.

Voor KPN is de nieuwe internettechniek erg belangrijk. Beoogd topman P. Smits heeft hoge verwachtingen van het product. ,,De komende jaren investeren we meer dan 1,5 miljard gulden in ADSL.''

KPN gokt op 100.000 klanten tegen het eind van 2000. Hoeveel dat er uiteindelijk worden, weet Smits niet. ,,De hele internetbranche groeit als een jonge hond. Soms zijn de voorpoten groter dan de achterpoten.''

However, the classic argument once again rears its ugly head. Should I buy now? Should I upgrade? Should I wait for the next generation? Well, the SDR GeForce belongs to a certain classification of buyer.

Chances are, users purchasing a new system from an OEM will probably be interested in a powerful video card to compliment a powerful CPU and the GeForce delivers insane frame rates. On the other end of the spectrum, anyone with a Celeron system will have a nice liberation from the CPU bottleneck they are used to (with T&L enabled titles only, current generation DX 6 games will not improve much!).

However, hardcore gamers may want to wait for the DDR versions (should give you time to save up the extra $100) to further increase performance in 32-bit color and high resolutions. Seeing as T&L titles are in short supply right now, it would also probably be a good idea to wait and compare ATI's Rage Fury MAXX and S3's Diamond Viper II to the GeForce. We hope by that time (and after the release of the DDR versions) that the prices of the SDR cards will have dropped significantly.

If you just have to have the fastest card out today though, Leadtek's WinFast is a sure bet to save a few dollars and still have the newest technology to play with.

Microsoft verlegd intussen zijn strategie naar de vercommercialisering van het internet en de achterliggende infrastructuur:

What are my conclusions? To me, it is obvious that Bill Gates and Microsoft have realized that the Windows monopoly days are drawing to a close. Further, they don't really care. Anyone with a bit of insight must have realized that we have reached a so-called inflection point in the software industry. Free software has reached a point where it can no longer be easily dismissed. The Internet and embedded devices are increasingly usurping the role of the traditional desktop computer. In a world where the desktop is relegated to a lesser role, a desktop monopoly becomes irrelevant.

Microsoft must also realize this. Of course, they will try to hold the line and maintain their Windows empire for as long as possible. But, by looking at their investment strategy, it becomes apparent they are focusing more on gaining a new monopoly on the new playing field.

Examine MSNBC, Hotmail.com, Expedia.com, MSN.com, and so on, for some insight into what the new focus really is. Most importantly though, is their multi-billion dollar investment in AT&T. Linux is already starting to make the operating system into a commodity. With the Internet turning into a gold rush atmosphere, the obvious place to strike it rich is not to "mine gold" by selling operating systems, but to sell "shovels and picks", owning the infrastructure the miners need to operate. Whoever owns the medium and the media of the Internet will make the most money. Simple fact.

PW: It runs at 2.5V and will consume somewhere from 70 to 80W.

VE: With 4 processors on the Voodoo 5, with support for 32, how are you dealing with heat? Active or will passive be sufficient?

PW: We’ll use fans on the devices.

VE: How will the memory allocation work with the V5 5000. Will 32 megs be enough to play a game well? With FSAA?

PW: You bet. It’s a unified frame buffer. Only the texture data has to be repeated for each VSA-100 chip. Remember that many games will also use texture compression, though 128MB is plenty even without texture compression!

VE: Will we ever see a DDR version of the V4/5?

PW: DDR is definitely the high-performance graphics memory of the future but we can’t comment on specific product plans.

Thresh en Kornuiten hebben net een review gepost van de Asus V6600 GeForce in de Deluxe versie, dus met TV inputs, TV output en een VR output voor je 3D bril. Verder is het een normale SDRAM versie met 32MB aan geheugen die op maximaal 195MHz kan draaien. De core haalt zo'n 145MHz.

The ASUS AGP-V6600 Deluxe isn't your average GeForce card. If you're just looking for a card that will give you the fastest scores in Quake3 and nothing else, you're better off looking elsewhere, but if you're looking for a well rounded video card that offers features that go beyond the mindless fragging of Quake3, you might want to consider the ASUS board.

In addition to 3D performance, the Deluxe AGP-V6600 video card has video editing capabilities and support for VR 3D. While many hardcore competitive gamers might scoff at 3D glasses, we have to admit that the glasses to offer a whole new immersive experience to games. 3D VR technology could work well with non-competitive RPG type games such as Final Fantasy 8.

The Deluxe AGP-V6600 is a good card for those who want more out of a video card than just 3D performance. Those who just want the fastest fps probably don't need the extra features, but the overclocking potential of the ASUS card is very promising. Cards are going to distributors this week, and should be available on store shelves in the beginning of December.

Bij Scott's Hardware hebben ze een review online geplant rondom de dikke Sony 420GS 19" Trinitron monitor. Deze bak heeft een maximale resolutie van 1600 x 1200 @ 75 Hz en een 0.25 - 0.27 variabele aperture grill. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

For a mid-line model, the Sony 420GS is a exceptional monitor with excellent clarity and sharpness. I could find no noticeable flaws with the display other than the standard two faint gray lines typical of the Trinitron line. These lines are actually damper wires which help support and stabilize the aperture grille, and are only noticeable when you have a very light background on screen. The CRT is also curved in the horizontal plane, although flat in the vertical plane, which is not quite as nice as the true flat screens on the market, but once again this is due to cost as this is a mid-range model.

The Sony 420GS is aimed at the corporate user market, as the inclusion of the front input port and selectable display mode options suggest, thus will be most beneficial for those types of users. If you are a graphic professional looking for a new work monitor, or hard core gamer that has money to burn and needs only the best, I would suggest staying with the top end models with the flat screens. For most general home users looking for a 19" monitor, and those with smaller budgets than the high end allow, this is still a great choice.

Overall I think the Sony 420GPS is an excellent value in its class, and would be a great addition for anyone looking to upgrade a general purpose monitor. The 420GS is a bit higher priced then that of similar monitors in the 19" line, so the Sony name and the quality behind it may, or may not, mean that much to you.

Sony provides a 3 year warranty on the 420GS which includes parts, labor and the CRT. The Sony CDP-420GD has a MSRP of $599, however can be found at a street price of $450.

Hardware Central heeft een review in elkaar getimmerd van de Abit BF6 mobo, de vervanger van de BH6. Met SoftMenu III en 119 FSB settings is dit echt een bord voor de overklokker! Alleen wel jammer dat ATA/66 ontbreekt...

Truly an excellent board. Aside from that nagging ATX power connector which seems to plague so many BX boards, the layout is really wonderful. Abit’s attention to detail is a refreshing and welcome change.

For the overclocker no other board can offer the degree of control afforded by Abit’s SoftMenu III. Voltage tweaking abilities, combined with the inclusion of the 1:4 PCI clock ratio and almost nauseating number of FSB settings, ensure that compulsive overclockers will be able to squeeze every drop of performance out of their processors (as if 3 more MHz will actually help anyone). Furthermore, the board is clearly geared toward the overclocker, with 2 fan headers for a dual fan near the DIMM slots and an added thermistor for extra temperature monitoring.

Since product availability has never been a problem for Abit, the only reason I can see not to opt for this board is the lack of a 1:2 AGP clock ratio. If, in fact, that’s something you require for your overclocking escapades, you won't find it on any board based on the i440BX chipset, leaving the Via Apollo Pro Plus as the only viable alternative.

Although the BF6 is intended to replace the BH6 as Abit’s economy model, there are still cheaper boards out there. If you’re building a bottom-line system and just need any old board, it’s definitely possible to find something a few bucks cheaper.

In summary: a well-designed, feature-rich board, for an affordable price. If you’re an intermediate to advanced user, you’ll simply love the control you get with the BF6. A word to the wise--if you’re interested in UDMA/66, check into the Abit BE6-II instead. Stay tuned for something on that board shortly, here at HardwareCentral.

The Register verblijdt ons met de mededeling dat Intel inderdaad op 12 december haar prijzen zal verlagen. Helaas nog geen specifieke info over de sterkte van de daling.

As reported here earlier, Intel has now confirmed to its distributor and dealer channel that it will cut prices on the 12th of December next.

That will also be the date that its boxed Rambus motherboard, the VC820, becomes widely available for sale.

In a letter to large dealers, dated yesterday, Intel said: "On December 12, 1999, Intel will be reducing prices on boxed Pentium® III processors sold through authorised distributors. With this price move, Intel is delivering higher performance and better value in the performance desktop market segment.

"We will have more information available the week of the price move. Please contact your authorized Intel distributor after December 12, 1999 for specific pricing and availability details"

Another letter to dealers last week said that the VC820 will become available in mid-December.

Valcon schreef dat de Telegraaf een bericht gepost heeft over de zogenaamde GSM-bende. Het schijnt nu dat de KPN zelf het gerucht in het leven geroepen heeft over het bestaan van deze GSM-bende die sim-kaarten zou kopiëren. (zie ook dit bericht).

De massale angst onder gsm-bezitters naar aanleiding van valse waarschuwingen voor een criminele bende die op grote schaal sim-kaarten kopieert, blijkt mede door KPN Telecom aangewakkerd te zijn.

Ruim een week geleden deed het bericht de ronde dat er een bende actief is in ons land die gsm-bezitters opbelt. Leden van de bende doen zich als medewerker van een gsm-aanbieder voor. Om het toestel 'te controleren' zouden zij vragen enkele cijfers in te toetsen. Volgens de alarmerende berichten zouden de criminelen daardoor de abonneegegevens kunnen kopiëren en op kosten van het slachtoffer kunnen bellen.

Enkele account-managers van KPN Telecom stuurden vorige week naar aanleiding van de geruchten een waarschuwing naar hun relaties, met daarin de mededeling dat de politie Haaglanden het verhaal had bevestigd. De dienders in die regio kregen de afgelopen dagen vele honderden telefoontjes van verontruste mobiele bellers. De klantenservice van de telecom-gigant deed er vlak voor het weekend nog een schepje bovenop door het bericht ook onder haar relaties te verspreiden.

Volgens een voorlichter van KPN is het personeel enkele dagen geleden verteld dat de waarschuwingen onzin zijn. "Technisch gezien is het zelfs onmogelijk." KPN betreurt het dat haar medewerkers de onterechte paniek aangewakkerd of wellicht zelfs veroorzaakt hebben. "Ze hebben het bericht ongetwijfeld met goede bedoelingen doorgestuurd, maar het klopt natuurlijk niet dat de grootste gsm-aanbieder dit soort onzin verspreidt", aldus de woordvoerder.

Inmiddels verspreidt de waarschuwing zich, voornamelijk per e-mail, als een olievlek over ons land. Een grote winkelketen in kantoorartikelen heeft de waarschuwing voor de gsm-bende zelfs voor hun klanten opgehangen.

Van tijd tot tijd steken dergelijke onzin-waarschuwingen de kop op, vermoedelijk verspreid door grapjassen. Zo ontstond enige maanden geleden de nodige onrust door het verhaal dat er een virus in omloop was dat de sim-kaart van het gsm-toestel zou wissen.

hjs weet te melden dat Hardware One een review online gemikt heeft van de Creative 3D Blaster GeForce Pro met DDR geheugen. Helaas geen vergelijking met de SDRAM versie, maar wel veel resulaten van de kaart na hem te hebben overklokt tot 145/355MHz. Het lijkt erop dat met dit kaartje 60fps in Quake3 op 1024x768 @ 32bit mogelijk is:

I believe the numbers speak for themselves. And really, with frame-rates that high on 1024x768/32bit, any power gamer should be more than pleased. Seriously, this card ROCKS! But the only hindering factor is whether your wallets can shelve out the necessary dough for this 32bit beauty. I guess if you’re happy with 16-bit play, then the SDRAM version would do just fine. However, if you’re a “Quaker” or UT player like me, who unassumingly finds time to enjoy the 32-bit scenery periodically or simply cannot accept less than perfect Hi-Res textures, this is the card for you. I guess Savage 2000 may pose a formidable threat especially with its good bang-for-buck value in 32bit. But till I see it, I guess the GeForce Pro reigns for now….

Mark van Hastec mailde ons zojuist de allereerste (nederlandse) tests met de Diamond Viper II in vergelijking met de Viper V770 (Ultra), getest op een Pentium II 450 met 128Mb in Quake 3 1.08. Het ziet er indrukwekkend uit.

De resultaten zie je hier. De Viper II haalt op 1280*960@32-bit een 55% hogere framerate als de Viper V770 Ultra.

Two early targets: the Mozilla browser project and Sendmail Inc.

The Linux provider plans a major investment in Mozilla—which was created and funded by Netscape Communications Corp.—possibly as early as next month to accelerate future browser development, said sources close to Red Hat. I've been working on early research and development on a new engine, mainly focusing on the next-generation successor to UnrealScript for now. It's great fun to be back doing some blue-sky tech experimentation now, having been in crunch mode for basically the last two-and-a-half years: first it was "we must finish Unreal", then "we must fix the network code and Direct3D", then "we must finish Unreal Tournament".

The next engine will contain more new code than old; we'll have a 100% new renderer optimized for year 2000 hardware; we'll have a massively enhanced game and networking framework; and an all-new editor. But for now, the new scripting language seems like the best starting point, so that's what I'm focusing on now.

hjs schrijft dat Eric van Fast Graphics de Real World T&L performance van een GeForce kaart getest heeft, zowel met als zonder DDR Ram. Hierbij heeft hij gebruik gemaakt van 3D Winbench 2000 die hij vervolgens op een Athlon 700 systeem gedraaid heeft. Ter vergelijking zijn ook de scores van een TNT2 Ultra opgenomen. Hieronder wat over de resultaten, voor de rest moet je hier zijn.

The first benchmark, the "speedway" is a real T&L test. When you look at the results you see that the performance with T&L enabled is about 2-3 times better than without T&L. This clearly shows a CPU bottleneck when T&L is disabled: Even in the higher resolutions the non T&L scores remain virtually the same which means that the CPU cannot provide the T&L data fast enough (note that this a a 700 MHz Atlhon !!!)

The Rust Valley and Chamber scenes on the other hand are quite simple, thus depending little on the T&L engine and more on the card's fill-rate. The Rust Valley scene even runs better without T&L than with T&L enabled.. I'm not sure what causes this, but I guess that when T&L is done on chip, the fill-rate suffers somewhat because there's only so much data that can be processed per second. When T&L is done on-chip this means that an extra burden is put in the AGP bus, the GeForce chip itself and the memory interface on the GeForce. Again, this is only a guess, but I'll let you know as soon as I have more info on this issue.

When we look at the overall results, we see pretty much the same pictures for 640x480, 800x600 and 1024. All cards score lower when the resolution goes up, but the scale remains about the same.

Only 1600x1200 shows different results because this is where we hit the fill-rate limit. TNT2 Ultra has to give the GeForce DDR some more space here since it just can't provide the fill-rate anymore. Due to the that same fill-rate limitation we see that the T&L engine on the GeForce can't do miracles anymore as even GeForce is hitting it's fill-rate maximum and T&L is no longer the only bottleneck.

Internet chat rooms were humming with gossip about Corel and some traders attributed the frantic activity to day traders who dive in when momentum is strong.

Fund manager Duncan Stewart cited rumors that Red Hat might look at buying Corel, but said he was loathe to put too much credence in the gossip.

``I have heard that Red Hat might buy Corel,'' said Duncan Stewart, fund manager at Tera Capital in Toronto. He said it wasn't outside of the realm of possibility, given that Linux firm Red Hat has been criticized for not having a strong distribution network -- something Corel could offer.

A Microsoft rep once told us that there was a generally cold reception for aftermarket mice that offered no new innovation or gadgetry. Logitech pioneered the "gaming mouse," and the Razer Boomslang confidently marches down that path, with a custom-designed product that boasts being more than just a repackaged version of a discontinued rodent. Can it live up to its lofty goal of pleasing the treacherous swarms of "hardcore," "elite," and even "professional" players? Perhaps it can, if for one, users can overcome aversion to its wild and unorthodox shape. While claims of enhanced precision may or may not be noticed (our office was split on this point, but many agreed that smoother rolling could account for the feel), and that depends greatly on how acutely you measure mouse performance.

The Razer Boomslang 1000 and 2000 should become available as you read this preview, and all of us at FiringSquad are eager to get our hands on a production model to test out the changes that have been incorporated in the retail version. In its current form, the Razer Boomslang holds promise, but also has a number of challenges to overcome in becoming a reference product.

GamePC heeft een review gepost van Intel's <kuch>fantastische</kuch> Cape Cod moederplank met i820 chipset en DIMM slots. Het ding blijkt prima te werken, alleen valt de memory performance in sommige gevallen met 30 tot 40% terug dankzij de memory controller die het plankje geschikt maakt voor SDRAM:

It's pretty clear to us, the I820 chipset is nothing without Rambus, they're built for one another. In any case, the CC820 is definitely not suited for gamers, or tweakers, or serious business applications, pretty much whatever needs to be done can be done on a BX-board with better performance. Intel's really in a tough spot on this board. People demand a next-generation platform, but need legacy (SDRAM) support, as opposed to completely going to Rambus, which seems to be the next logical step computer buyers will need to make. So they have to cut-back performance to add an SDRAM board to the lineup, but when it doesn't perform up to par, people will get angry. It's a tough call to make, but the fact remains that the performance of this board doesn't live up to the hype that the I820 has generated. If you have SDRAM, stick with BX, but if you're buying I820, buy some Rambus with it.

Twee jaar gevangenisstraf, beperkte toegang tot het internet en urine steekproeven, dat is de straf die de Amerikaanse G.Levy heeft gekregen. Levy had een illegale MP3 site waar ook illegale software zoals Adobes Photoshop kon worden gedownload. Toch is Levy niet ontevreden, "het had nog erger gekund" aldus Levy's advokaat. Tegen Levy was drie jaar tuchthuis en vier miljoen dollar geëist. De totale waarde van aangeboden MP3's ( meer dan 1000) en software op Levy's site bedroeg meer dan 70 000 dollar. De reden dat Levy ook veroordeeld is tot het ondergaan van urinesteekproeven heeft te maken met de vondst van enkele marihuana sigaretten bij hem thuis. Levy is de eerste in een rij van aangeklaagde software piraten in Amerika. Nog 25 andere MP3piraten zijn ondertussen door de Business Software Alliance aangeklaagd.

the "InPos >= Size" error means that the file it was trying to load off disk had been corrupted somehow. Please try the following things:

- Uninstall UT, and then delete the c:\unrealtournament directory afterwards.

- Run scandisk on your drive to make sure here are no FAT etc errors. Reboot.

- Copy the entire UT CD to a temporary folder on your hard drive (if you've got enough disk space).

- Install UT from that folder on your hard drive.

The other thing you could try is taking your CD to the store and getting it swapped, as the CD could possibly be corrupted. Another way to tell if it's the CD or your computer would be to try installing the same CD on another computer.

Adviesgroep vraagt EU om boycot Pentium III

In een rapport over elektronische surveillance pleit een adviesgroep van de EU voor een boycot van de Pentium III-chip. De privacyrisico's voor de Europese burger zouden te groot zijn.

De commotie rond het Processor Serial Number (PSN) van Intel leek te zijn geluwd, maar met de publicatie van een rapport van een EU-adviesgroep is het privacyvraagstuk weer actueel.

Het Science and Technology Options Assesment Panel (STOA) presenteerde onlangs aan het Europees Parlement een rapport over elektronische surveillancetechnieken. Hierin vraagt STOA leden van het europarlement een boycot van de chip te overwegen.

Het Europees Parlement zou legale maatregelen moeten nemen die 'moeten voorkomen dat Pentium III-chips in computers van Europese burgers worden geïnstalleerd', zo schrijf STOA. Het panel maakt zich zorgen over de privacy van de consument.

Hiermee wordt de rel rond het Processor Serial Number van de Pentium III weer opgerakeld. Begin dit jaar vielen diverse privacy-groeperingen over Intel heen vanwege dit identificatienummer (zie nieuws van 2 februari). Volgens Intel kon het PSN worden gebruikt om e-commerce te vergemakkelijken. Privacybeschermers meenden echter dat het nummer misbruikt zou kunnen worden om websurfers te identificeren.

Intel kwam haar critici vervolgens tegemoet door het serienummer standaard op 'uit' te zetten. Dit bood ook geen soelaas daar experts er al snel in slaagden het ID-nummer te kraken (zie nieuws van 11 maart).

In haar rapport – genaamd 'Encryption and Cryptosystems in Electronic Surveillance: A Survey of the Technology Assessment Issues' – noemt STOA ook Amerikaanse overheidsinstellingen als de National Security Agency (NSA) en de FBI. De adviesgroep verlangt van deze instellingen informatie over hun rol in het ontstaan van het Processor Serial Number.

STOA is een groep gespecialiseerd in privacy-vraagstukken en adviseert de Europese Unie hierover. De adviesgroep wijst al tijden op het gevaar van elektronische surveillancetechnieken die door Europese regeringen worden geëntameerd, zoals het aftappen van internetverkeer.

Het Europees Parlement zal pas besluiten over de door STOA geadviseerde maatregelen nadat een groep technische experts de veiligheidsricicos's van de chip heeft onderzocht.
