Pentium III Coppermine produktie tekort?

We need to realize that Coppermine is very low volume now. This means that some people may not be able to purchase it soon. According to some reliable source, "Coppermine short" continues until next year. I don't know the reason why Copperine will be such a shortage situation.

I don't know when it will be solved .....

Ubisoft Rally Racing Simulation screenshots

Door Femme Taken, 22 oktober 1999 18:1217 reacties, bron: Behind the wheel racing

[3DU]. Duke Nukem 3D really did kick some serious ass, do you guys plan on having Duke talk like you did in Duke 3D?

[SM]. Do you really think we could shut Duke up!!! Expect him to say at least 10x as much as he said in Duke Nukem 3D. Other game characters will also have a lot to say.

[3DU]. What can you tell us about the engine of Duke Forever?

[SM]. We're using the Unreal Tournament version of the engine, but we've added a LOT of new technology to it. There's no doubt in my mind that our enhanced UT engine is one of the most powerful, impressive engines ever used, and will very much be leading-edge stuff when DNF comes out. In other words, this game will not in any way suffer from looking dated, which many gamers have expressed some concern about.

Athlon Multiplier tweaking in Asus K7M moederplank?

All that has changed this week as GamePC took delivery on their first batch of ASUS K7M Slot-A boards, which feature being able to directly control the Athlon CPU's clock multiplier through the mainboard's BIOS. On a final note, we'd like to point out that the much ballyhooed 'Intel Conspiracy Theory' (in which certain individuals believed we'd never see any good quality Athlon mainboards due to Intel allegedly pressuring the Taiwanese mainboard vendors regarding their Athlon support) dissolved as soon as the K7M appeared on American shores.

It's surprising the lengths some will go to in the quest to generate false controversy, but the presence of the K7M serves notice that regardless of which company manufacturers a strong CPU, Taiwan will indeed support it once it sells enough units as the Athlon now has.

AseTek Vapochill press release

ASETEKÔ, Danish manufacturer of active CPU cooling systems, announced final confirmation of its US patents application protecting its new VapoChillÔ product line. The system allows a CPU to run at temperatures as low as –20ºC, eliminating the heat barrier for system overclocking.

The second generation of the VapoChillÔ is offering 100% “do it yourself” integration, allowing the end user to use existing hardware or build up a complete system from their own demands. No hardware is shipped with the VapoChillÔ only an ATX tower case containing a power supply and cooling unit. A 12V compressor driven by the computers own power supply runs the system. The 12V technology makes the systems usable worldwide independent of 115/230V wall outlet. The systems are low noise; with a noise level at revolutionary 35db(A) the VapoChillÔ is setting new standards in this area as well.

The VapoChillÔ product line is compatible with all current IntelÒ processors and the AMDÒ AthlonÒ series of CPU’s, offering chilled speeds at above 800MHz. Within a short time ASETEKÔ expects speeds of above 1GHz. The cooling system is standard for all processors, and is only differentiated by a CPU-kit preventing condensed water from forming on the CPU. This makes the cooling system a one-time investment as the consumer can upgrade his CPU again and again. The systems are priced much lower than seen before in the sub zero cooling industry. Within the first fiscal quarter 2000 ASETEKÔ will launch its dual CPU product line, which offers similar performance but on dual processor systems.

Procuring these patents applications in the US and a series of other countries clears the way for ASETEKÔ to begin selling their systems all over the world. ASETEKÔ is currently in negotiations for distribution and marketing, and are actively seeking distributors and resellers. ASETEKÔ expects to begin shipping units within the next month. The supply will be limited until Q1 2000 however, while ASETEKÔ is restructuring and building up a complete new factory with larger production facilities. Therefore the primary focus until Q1 2000 will be to ship evaluation units to resellers and distributors.

Beta evaluation units have already been sent to a few hardware reviewers, and their comments should be widely available soon. Overclocker’s Shootout and OverclockingDK have already completed their review; which can be found at http://www.ocshoot.com/vapo.htm and http://www.overclocking.dk/asp/vapouk.asp Respectively. ComputerDK at http://www.computerdk.dk/artikler/supercool/Introduction-Supercool-UK.html is ready with a preview of the VapoChill dual. The first US review on-line will be HardOCP at http://www.hardocp.com in about two to four weeks.

Currently ASETEKÔ is targeted for technophiles who are driven to get the highest possible performance from their machines for the lowest possible price. It also has potential for use in hostile environments such as warehouses, where ambient heat would normally create instability when the machine is being run constantly. Later ASETEKÔ will introduce a product line targeting the professional market, offering systems for servers and high performance workstations. ASETEKÔ currently has no arrangements with chipmakers and is therefore not selling complete systems, containing CPU and motherboard. ASETEKÔ has ongoing negotiations with, and are seeking OEM’s making it possible for the customer to buy complete systems based on the VapoChillÔ cooling technology.

ASETEKÔ hopes to be a major supplier of active cooling systems to individuals, resellers, and manufacturers worldwide for as long as computers generate heat. All indications so far, are that the VapoChillÔ is an idea whose time has come.

Gigabyte GA-7IX Athlon mobo review #2

For those of you who must get an Athlon now (and I mean now, not 'in-a-week' now), we'd wholeheartedly recommend the GA-7IX. It's a brilliantly engineered board, with much more BIOS features that the Fester boards (never seen one in Hong Kong, doubt I ever will...) and Gigabyte's trademark stability. Gigabyte has taken extra steps in improving the board's usability by shifting the ATX power supply to the front of the Slot-A slot, a great improvement given the Athlon's girth (how the hell are we supposed to string the wires BEHIND the Athlon when it's so frickin' big?). It's a breeze to install, just like another other mobo (save the need for the AGP miniport). Just make sure you know how to deal with that stray capacitor, unless you get a smaller custom fan eliminating the need for the additional support.

So what's holding us back from giving it a better score? The lack of overclocking functions. Anyone who invests over HK$3000 into an Athlon platform will want to be able to push it beyond the rated speed. Right now, there are no boards featuring any true overclocking abilities - the FIC SD-11 is rumored to have FSB settings in its BIOS for 120Mhz and 133Mhz, but sources have indicated that few Athlons can take such a large boost in speed without reducing the multiplier, thus calling for dangerous modifications like our customized Athlon powerhouse. Asus's slot A board, K7M, should reach the market by the 19th Oct, and will feature a full selection of FSB speeds from 90Mhz up to a mindblowing 150Mhz, making it ‘the’ overclocker's Slot A board and becoming what Abit BH6 was to the Slot 1 market. And even then, the K7M will be limited to AGP2X as VIA's PX133 is still far off in the distant horizons. But until then, it goes without saying; the Gigabyte GA-7IX offers the best combination of usability, price, performance and stability available today.

Feeling rich? Get one of these mobos, slap on a nice Athlon 600, and enjoy steroid-jammed performance. You won't regret it.

Blow-hole how-to

Now I have a nice, really fast moving mapped flow, more because I am using a seperate AT power supply just for the fans and they are all running at 17v instead of the rated 12v. That gave me a few thousand more RPM's on each fan, translating to more cubic feet of air moved. This case is FREAKY cool now! With the system off and just the fans running, and with a room temperature of 75.6 deg. F., The inside of the case sat at a cozy 73.9 deg. F. !! Yes kiddies, actually a couple of degrees below room temp. I was stoked to say the least. Now to turn the bastard on and see what running temp was. With Win98 at idle, and only necessary processes running, I hade a temp of a whopping 77.9 deg. F. Oh my god, a whole 2.3 degrees above room temp at the heatsink on the CPU. Now that is sweet. I turned on my usuall toys (ICQ, Winproxy, Seti@home client, and Surf Express) and hit a totally outrages temp of 84.6 deg. F.

Zoiets als dit dus:

Microstar MS-6167 Athlon mobo review

With the MS-6167, MSI successfully demonstrates that a more economically oriented version of the original AMD Fester reference design can be successfully implemented into a production version of an Athlon board. With a slight increase of agility and additional features such as the USB ports and wake-on-LAN, the MS-6167 remains a very down-to-earth board with excellent stability and performance.

The Award BIOS does offer some possibility for adjusting the memory timing settings, and the overall manageability of the Award BIOS is more user friendly than the AMI BIOS used in the FIC SD11 and ASUS K7M. That still does not change the overall impression that a manual IRQ router would be more than desirable. As things stand at the moment, the MS-6167 is an excellent first generation SlotA board with enough expandability for about everything and the necessary stability to handle the demands of those of us who make a hobby out of torturing their systems. At an estimated street price of about $150 there is very little that could stand in the way of giving this board some serious consideration.

The Making of a Silicon Chip

It comes from one of the most common elements on earth: sand. Just as steel and coal powered our past, silicon made from sand has become the foundation of our future. After undergoing an extraordinary transformation, this simple element, mined from the earth, eventually becomes the silicon wafers from which microchips are built.

Beginning deep in the earth, quartz, which is believed to make up 28 percent of the earth's crust, is mined in quarries and then shipped to one of the few companies that specializes in processing this element into purified silicon. One of these companies is Wacker Siltronic in Germany, where electric arc furnaces transform the quartz to metallurgical-grade silicon. In a process designed to further weed out impurities, the silicon is converted to a liquid, distilled, and then redeposited in the form of semiconductor grade rods, which are, at that point, 99.999999 percent pure. These rods are then mechanically broken into chunks and packed into quartz crucibles, where they are melted at 2,593 degrees Fahrenheit.

Plextor Plexwriter 8/20 & UltraPlex 40Max review

8X recording for fastest record speed available in standard half-height form factor drives. At 8X speeds, in only ten minutes 650MB of data is recorded to CD-R media. Maximum of twenty and minimum of twelve speed data transfer during read. More data throughput than typical sixteen speed drives. Blazing 170ms access times combined with Fast SCSI burst transfer rates speed up multitasking operating systems such as Windows NT and Windows 95. Database searches also run faster. Optimized management of 4MB buffer results in use of less CPU resources and more reliable writing. More Reliability Solid construction and advanced components place the PLEXWRITER 8/20 a cut above the rest. Brushless motors with two bearings on cushioned suspension ensure minimal disc vibration and years of dependable service. Fast SCSI burst rates, low CPU utilization, added cooling, vibration dampening, large buffer, and synchronous data transfer add up to increased efficiency and more reliable CD writing. Furthermore, once a blank CD-R disc is recognized, the drive provides the optimum laser power and length of burn for that media.

Coppermine notebooks volgende week

A key benefit for consumers is that notebooks will come close to matching Pentium III desktop computers in performance. Notebook designers, like their desktop counterparts before them, will now eschew the aging Pentium II chip and concentrate on economy models with Celeron processors and high-end versions using the Pentium III.

Among the major manufacturers, Gateway will release a notebook for less than $2,000 based on the 450-MHz of the Pentium III. The Solo 2550 will be priced at $1,999 and come with a 13.3-inch screen and the improved 100-MHz bus.

Proving that Intel's brawniest chip can fit into a small, elegant design, NEC will introduce the Versa FX series of notebooks weighing only 3.5 pounds and less than an inch thick but packing in a 400-MHz Pentium III for $2,499. This will include a DVD-ROM drive and long-life batteries, according to sources familiar with the announcement.

IBM is planning to update its ThinkPad 600 line with the Pentium III and an updated graphics subsystem, according to sources. The 600 is a slim design but integrates a CD- or DVD-ROM drive.

Dell Computer will update both its Latitude line, aimed at corporations, and Inspiron models, targeted at consumers and small business, according to sources close to Dell.

Creative Labs DVD-RAM Kit review

This is not a DVD recorder.

I have to mention that up front, because I've gotten a number of questions on this issue. The Creative DVD-RAM drive can act as a DVD-ROM drive, but you can't take a DVD-RAM cartridge (or remove the disc from the cartridge) and read it in a DVD-ROM drive like those on most PCs.

The Creative PC-DVD DVD-RAM drive (say that fast, five times) is a pricey alternative to other backup methods. It requires an SCSI host adapter, which means it's really only suited for high-end SCSI-based systems - though you can always just drop in a cheap SCSI card and use it as a backup drive. Measuring performance for this drive is a little tricky - do you measure the drive as if it were a CD-ROM or a backup device? We did both.

The DVD-RAM drive ships with one double-sided cartridge. Note that although it's touted as a "5.2GB drive," the cartridges are really double-sided. Each side is 2.6GB unformatted and about 2.5GB formatted. Note that these are "hard drive" megabytes - Windows 98 will report about 2.3GB of space. Storage devices believe that a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes, whereas computer systems believe that a megabyte is 1,048,576 bytes. You have to manually flip the cartridge over to get the other 2.6GB.

Guillemot introduceert MAXI CD-RW 4X-4X-32X

Unreal Tournament bugs list

Direct3D
[addition to the first item on TNT1/2 etc with less than 128MB]:

Update: I've just tried the newly released 3.53 Detenator drivers on my TNT2 machine, and played with all the D3D advanced options, and the drivers still appear to be page-locking around 16-20MB of physical RAM. If you find settings which improve the situation, please drop us an email at utbugs348@epicgames.com.

Networking
* People are reporting netplay is laggier or they are experiencing more packet loss with this version. The netplay code has not been changed. This is because there are not that many servers running at the moment (200 vs over 400 before). Server operators *please* upgrade! Audio
* A3D weapon sounds are reported to be a lot more muffled sounding in A3D than in the previous release. We are looking into this. * The loud buzzing sound in the DM-MorpheusDemo map with 3D sound enabled is still there - sorry, we forgot to update this map for the demo release. The offending sound has been removed for the full version of the game.

Visuals * The "predator" style crosshair has a red box around it if you set your crosshair color to have any red in it. This corrupted texture has been fixed.

2*RIMM Camino relaunch begin december

Door Femme Taken, 22 oktober 1999 13:571 reactie, bron: Ace's Hardware

Eind november of toch december?

According to this Ctech Taiwan report , Intel will likely relaunch i820 by this coming December, featuring either 2 RIMM slots or 2 DIMM slots onboard. In a related Ctech Taiwan report , ALI, SiS and VIA are saying that they will probably not join in to support Rambust until H2 2000 the earliest. Not too surprisingly, VIA is quoted as saying that Rambust popularity has been crippled by the i820 disaster and that they don't hold an optimistic view about the future of Rambust. SiS is quoted as saying that they have already obtained the rights to Rambust 4 years ago but they are still taking a wait-and-see attitude in supporting Rambust because they don't believe Rambust really benefits the consumers too much. ALI is quoted as saying that the cost of Rambust is too high and so they are unwilling to rush ahead of Intel to support Rambust, and that they don't expect to see increase in Rambust popularity in the short future.

Compaq / API Alpha 21464 info

Door Femme Taken, 22 oktober 1999 13:513 reacties, bron: The Australian

Called the EV8 - and known in techspeak as the 21464 - this is a fifth generation of the Alpha processor family, and will be manufactured using a 0.13 micron process, running with a clock speed between 1.2 and 2Ghz. The EV8 uses a new CPU core, and delivers twice the performance of the EV7 (21364), which was announced at last year's forum, delivering twice the performance of the 1Ghz EV68 (21264).

Compaq vice-president and Alpha Processor technology general manager Jesse Lipcon says, on the single instruction stream benchmarks, the EV8 will deliver twice the performance per megahertz clock rate relative to EV68 and EV7. More importantly, the SMT allows for a performance improvement factor of two in real workloads and that is the main technology innovation.

SMT allows the processor to run up to four separate instruction streams or threads in parallel, using the same shared pool of eight integer and four floating-point execution units. To the software, this system appears as if it is a four-way SMP (symmetric multi-processing) system, but is actually a single CPU.

nVidia Detonator 2.17 vs 3.52 drivers

Door Femme Taken, 22 oktober 1999 13:163 reacties, bron: the link

There have been a lot of 3.xx Nvidia beta drives floating around the web lately and I managed to get my hands on some drivers which were version 3.52. So I thought I'd take a look at the 3d performance compared with the old standby 2.08 drivers and what I've seen ain't pretty. These drivers are actually slightly slower than the 2.08 ones. All tests were run with core 145 and memory 180 on a Diamond Viper770 and a Celeron 300A overclocked to 527. the memory can go higher on this card, much higher, but for the sake of eliminating stability variables I brought it down from 205 which is the normal spot. Anyway I'll make this snappy. Here's what I saw in Quake3:

ASETEK has a huge advantage when considering your upgrade choices. You can basicly use whatever CPU/motherboard combination suits you best. Only limitation at the moment is that it has to be a Slot 1/A motherboard. If you have a Socket370 CPU, you can use a slot converter. ASETEK currently has systems based on Celeron, Pentium III and Athlon. ASETEK has already said they will support Coppermine from the moment it is introduced. They are the only company which offers a dual-CPU system. Kryotech is talking about having a dual Athlon ready around late Q1 2000, early Q2. If you buy a dual system from ASETEK, you would be able to change to dual Athlon the very same day dual Athlon motherboards are available (let it be soon.... The only thing you need is a CPU kit which costs around USD30. It is up to you if you want to change the CPU(s) yourself or let ASETEK do it for you. It is still not quite as cheap and easy as upgrading a non-cooled machine but it comes close.

Kryotechs system cannot be upgraded. You are flat out of luck, which makes a somewhat grotesque investment for the average gamer. (We did not manage to get an answer from ComCool before deadline as to whether they were able to upgrade the machine for you and if so, what it would cost).

AOpen centraliseert distributie in Nederland!

Door Femme Taken, 22 oktober 1999 11:592 reacties, bron: The Register

Jippie, Nederland in het nieuws bij The Register: AOpen gaat z'n wereldwijde distributie in Nederland samenplanten:

Acer plans to consolidate its worldwide warehouse operations into one plant in Holland. The vendor said it would stop shipping notebooks from its Taiwanese base to warehouses in each individual country from January, and PCs from mid-2000.

Instead, it intends to send incomplete product from Taiwan to its assembly plant in Tilburg, Holland. All orders will be assembled in Holland, and from there shipped directly to distributors and resellers worldwide.

Acer will also offer to ship kit straight to customer addresses, although users will still have to place orders through the channel.

The scheme will also involve changes to Acer's Internet operations. From January, Acer's resellers will have a direct link to the vendor's Web site, which will be able to immediately trigger orders in the Dutch factory.

"The aim is to touch product as little as possible. Every time it is handled, we lose money," said: Dion Weisler, Acer UK MD.

"Resellers will be able to track goods wherever they are in the supply chain. Costs will be reduced. And customers will get their products faster."

ATI Rage Fury MAXX Interview

Dave- Let's talk about the hardware now (our favorite part at HotHardware, of course!) Your design utilizes two Rage128 Pro chips running in parallel, to achieve fantastic performance numbers, can you tell us a little bit about the rest of the architecture and the ASIC technology you use to join these two engines together?

ATI- Our Dual ASIC technology allows us to utilize two .25 Micron Rage128 Pro chips and two independent 32MB SDRAM frame buffers populated on a single AGP card. This technology is implemented within our proprietary software and no additional components are needed to allow the two ASICs to work together. Also, each Rage128 Pro has its own on board DAC and Triangle Set Up Engine. The Dual ASIC technology is only engaged when playing full screen 3D games. When in a desktop environment, only one Rage128 Pro chip is utilized.

Dave- What type of memory subsystem will the card use? SGRAM, SDRAM, DDR-SDRAM?

ATI- We will be utilizing standard 6 or 7ns. SDRAM which is the most cost effective and available graphics memory today. Since we have two processing engines and two independent frame buffers, the total aggregate bandwidth produced will effectively be double thus negating the need to go to a more expensive memory like DDR SDRAM.

Gigabyte GA-7IX Athlon mobo review

EPOX Slot-A bord eind November!

Doing some tests on the GEforce256 we have, using SoF, I saw a considerable speed improvement. I ran a few quick tests on two machines:

#1: W2K, PIII 550, TNT2
#2: NT4, PII 300, GEforce256

Running at 1280x960, turning detail texturing fully on (i.e. every world polygon has detail on it) would result in a frame rendering difference of ~15ms for #1. #2, it was only a difference of ~6 ms. In other words, the slower machine with the GEforce256 could render detail texturing with a much less of a performance hit (i.e. better fill rate). Before you go quoting these numbers too much, note that one machine is Windows2000 (which is my main dev machine), and that both systems are using "alpha" drivers.

SoF also has a hardware lighting mode for ghoul models (as of this morning ), which takes full advantage of the hardware lighting of the GEforce256. This resulted in a significant improvement in framerate, plus also allowing us to throw many more light sources at the models.

Once the drivers have finalized, I'll put out some accurate numbers testing on the same computer. [break] Ook interessant is een eerdere .plan update van Jake Simpson: [/break] About this whole T&L vs Fill rate thing. I'm gonna add my $0.02 here, since there's a lot of info and opinions flying around about this, not all of them backed up by any facts and/or experience. From our experience with the new GEforce256 card, we are seeing some fairly decent results. SOF ran a full 25% faster with the card, with no new coding at all. Now there's a lot that affects this, so lets talk about those factors.

With an OpenGL game, you only get acceleration if you pass your geometry transforms through the OpenGL driver. This in itself is a weak spot, since there are more than a few OpenGL drivers out there that, quite frankly, suck when it comes to doing the transforms in a timely manner. So a lot of games developers do the transforms/lighting themselves before handing it off to the card. This way, they know its being done in the fastest manner possible, and you can take lots of short cuts with lighting and so on, and *you can know exactly how its being done everytime*. Now the problem with this is although you get a more standard response across video cards, it means its still main CPU bound, rather than being off loaded to a separate T&L processor when its available. The real solution is to have both, detect if there is a T&L processor around, and if there is, use that, else use your own transform pipeline. More work, but a better situation for the gamer, which is what its all about, right?

Now, faster fill rates over T&L? Well, it all really depends on what you are doing with the card in the first place. If your game puts out a standard number of polys, but has a ton of procedural textures (Textures that are changed in some way every frame - like the Water in Unreal Tournament) then you are still going to be wacking those textures across the bus to the card every frame, and T&L is not going to make any difference there at all. Also, if you are doing a spell game, and wacking out a ton of magical effects with a ton of overdraw going on, then faster fill rates make all the difference. There is an argument that having T&L means you require a heavier fill rate, since you are pushing more polys through a scene. More polys = more pixels drawn on screen = more fill rate required. While this is an argument, experience shows its really not a good one, and here's why. More polys does not always equal more pixels. Dependant on what the more polys are used for, its entirely possible that more polys can equal less pixels.

The purpose of this review is two-fold. The first and foremost is to determine the performance of the GeForce 256 using an extensive series of benchmark tests. The benchmark suite in this review includes OpenGL and Direct 3D based games, synthetic benchmarks, and those supplied by NVIDIA which are geared towards showing the advanced capabilities of the GeForce 256.

A second part of this review is to compare the performance of the GeForce 256 to both the TNT and TNT2. There are many existing TNT owners who bypassed upgrading to the TNT2 in anticipation of the GeForce 256.

Videologic DigiTheatre review

With a price of approximately $400 it's an expensive system by PC sound standards. However as I have noted time and time again the DigiTheatre system delivers a fantastic sound experience for DD 5.1 movies. So good that it will rival many more expensive home theater systems. The only real flaw is the lack of proper 4-speaker gaming mode and a minor flaw is the lack of a headphone jack (which is an all too common flaw). This system offers by far the best DD 5.1 experience of any speaker systems we have tested and without doubt get our Surge of Approval award.
