In de test is gebruik gemaakt van een AMD Athlon 1,3GHz, die flink belast werd met RC5 en Prime95. Naast de test met de eigen fans, werd ook nog getest met een Delta fan van 7000rpm om zo de prestaties van de heatsinks afzonderlijk te kunnen meten. Wat koelingsprestaties betreft is de Vantec CCK-6035D de winnaar. Hieronder een gedeelte uit de conclusie van Overclockers Online:

If you ask me which heatsink has suprised me the most this time, I must answer the Dragon Orb 3. At first, I was a little sceptical about it, but it turned out to be a true overclockers cooler. That's a nice improvement over the Mini Copper Orb we reviewed last time and didn't turn out to be that much of a great cooler. If we think about the price/performance ratio of the coolers in this August shootout, we can come up with a TOP 3:

nV News schrijft dat er bij Clubic een diagram te vinden is van een bijzondere GeForce3 kaart. Het betreft hier een exemplaar van Suma met jumpers op de kaart om het voltage van de core en het geheugen in te stellen. Het voltage van de core kan verhoogd worden naar 1.5759V, 1.6278V en 1.6762V (standaard 1.5185V). Het geheugen kan 3.47, 3.55V, 3.59V en 3,65V gevoerd krijgen, waarbij het laagste voltage standaard is.

Verder heeft de kaart ook nog een filter aan boord om te zorgen voor een verbeterde 2D kwaliteit en is er jumper aanwezig om de kaart in een handomdraai om te toveren naar een Quadro. Of de kaart ooit op de markt komt is nog de vraag aangezien er niks officieel aangekondigd is en nVidia waarschijnlijk niet erg blij is met de features die de kaart biedt:

This shouldn't be taken as official as the card is yet to be announced from SUMA, and the old GF2 card that featured the Quadro jumper didn't seem to last very long until NVIDIA had talks with the manufacturer.

PC PowerZone heeft een review online gezet van wat wel eens de geek-gadget onder de casefans kan worden: de Ultra Cool 80mm clear-bladed casefan. Dit is niet een normale casefan, die veelal gefabriceerd zijn van suf grijs of zwart plastic, nee, deze past perfect bij een gemodificeerde kast: de blades zijn transparant.

Niet alleen een lust voor het oog, zo concludeert de reviewer, maar ook voor het oor:

These fans are great! Whisper quiet and pushing 29.51CFM each - that now gives me 59.02CFM of intake power! WOW - and I can barely hear them too! Does it make a difference if the fans are clear? Erm ... no. The clear blades are for looks alone - but they do look really nice and perform very well. Are they worth £9.40 each? Comparing these to the other 80mm fans that Tekheads sell - yes. Their PAPST fans are £14.10 and have similar specs, as do the Thermaltake fans.

Uiteraard is de kleur van de propellor niet van invloed op de geluidsproductie noch op de hoeveelheid verstouwde lucht. Maar voor casemodders zijn andere dingen belangrijker: de mooiste kast met de meeste geek-gadgets.

SocketA.com heeft een review van de Soyo K7V Dragon gemaakt, een Socket A plank gericht op de power user. De K7V Dragon heeft de VIA KT266 chipset aan boord, 1xAGP, 5xPCI, 3xDIMM, onboard CMedia 6 channel audio en een Promise RAID-controller. Om de fanatieke tweaker tevreden te stellen is er verder de nodige aandacht geschonken aan overklokbaarheid, denk aan FSB-instellingen in stappen van 1MHz, en multiplier en voltage settings in het Award BIOS. De hoogst haalbare bussnelheid was in dit geval 157MHz.

De benchmarks wijzen uit dat de Soyo K7V Dragon goed mee kan komen met de concurrentie, maar hij springt er niet bepaald tussenuit. Toch krijgt het bord een perfecte score van 100 punten, vanwege het complete pakket zijn goede eigenschappen:

The K7V Dragon excels in many respects. It has great overclocking features with 1MHz increment adjustments for the memory up to 233MHz which equates to a whopping 466MHz FSB. Sure, I only reached 157MHz, but that was with aggressive timings. It also includes the most complete manual I have ever seen. The software bundle is excellent, and I especially approve of the inclusion of WinDVD. The black PCB makes this quite an attractive board on the eyes and is certain to catch the attention of hardware enthusiasts. With the addition of both the onboard Promise RAID and CMedia 6 channel sound including a SPDIF digital connector the Dragon has an unmatched hardware features score. Don't forget the inclusion of a packet of heatsink grease and 4, count them 4, ATA 100 IDE cables.

The Soyo K7V Dragon is as close to the ultimate Athlon board as I've seen yet. With so many hardware features it will be a tough act to follow. You can tell that Soyo has taken extra care with the Dragon to create the ultimate board for hardware junkies. Here's to hoping that continues.

Bij TweakTown is een review verschenen van de nieuwe speakerset van Altec Lansing, de ADA890. Hoewel deze set slechts vier satellietspeakers en één subwoofer heeft, is dit volgens de reviewer toch een 5.1 speakerset. De ontbrekende centerspeaker wordt namelijk geëmuleerd door de voorste twee speakers. Het gevolg hiervan is wel dat je precies in het midden moet gaan zitten voor een optimaal geluid van de 'centerspeaker'.

De satellietjes beschikken ieder over 15 Watt (RMS) en de subwoofer over 60 Watt (RMS). Daarnaast is de ADA890 ook THX gecertificeerd, wat een hoge geluidskwaliteit moet garanderen. De bediening werkt door middel van het control panel op één van de speakers en met de bijgeleverde afstandsbediening. Over de prestaties van de ADA890 is men zeer goed te spreken; een klein minpuntje is de hoge prijs ($349).

It’s not very often I find myself giving products a review rating of 10 out of 10, but I feel very confident in giving a product like the Altec Lansing ADA890 speaker system this rare rating – And not only that, but I’m also giving this system the prestigious TweakTown Editor’s Choice award which is so stringently handed out to only a handful of products. As everybody who hears the ADA890 speaker system in action that visits my place, they would all agree with me in saying that this speaker system is quite extraordinary and indeed mind blowing and quite possibly the best they have ever heard from a home entertainment system. I personally feel honoured to have such a fantastic home entertainment system under my own roof, Altec Lansing have done another great job in the ADA890 speaker system.

Volgens The Register is Release Candidate 2 van Windows XP uitgerust met een 'feature' die het niet toestaat dat sommige populaire software geïnstalleerd wordt. Op het laatste moment heeft Microsoft namelijk het zogenaamde "Drive Blocking" ingebouwd, waardoor Windows XP sommige applicaties, zoals BlackIce en ZoneAlarm, van het systeem weert. Dit alles om de stabiliteit van het besturingssysteem te verhogen...

The authors of BlackIce and ZoneAlarm assured us that versions will be updated to take account of the major networking changes in WinXP. "We've been working closely with Microsoft - BlackIce is widely used inside Microsoft - in order to make sure it works well," Rob Graham, founder of NetworkIce told us. Graham is chief architect at Internet Security Systems, which acquired NetworkIce in June. Graham said version 3.0 of BlackIce would be released shortly which will be XP compliant.
