Op Little White Dog is een guide verschenen waarin stap voor stap wordt beschreven hoe je het trage opstarten van Windows 2000 wat minder saai kunt maken door je eigen plaatje te gebruiken. Het standaard logo zit in NTOSKRNL.EXE gebakken en kan dus in principe vervangen worden, maar het probleem is dat dit bestand wordt beschermd door Windows uit angst voor virussen. In de tekst wordt niet alleen beschreven hoe je zelf met behulp van een resource editor het logo in het bestand kunt vervangen, maar ook hoe je kunt voorkomen dat automatisch een backup wordt teruggezet:

I'm sure there's going to be a LOT of better boot logo's popping up in the near future than the one that was made here. This one was made just to show that it's possible to change the boot logo, and how to accomplish it. If anyone does venture out and try this on their own, I'd really like to see their finished products posted in our forums. Something else to keep in mind is.... this might be another item that will drive the office tech support person absolutely crazy trying to figure out what happened!? Not that I would condone or endorse such a thing though. Also, now that we all know how to change the logo, I would like someone to tell me how to do it without turning off Windows File Protection. If you do have the answer, either E-mail it to me, or post it at the forum link below so everyone will know how it's done. The curiosity is still driving me a little crazy. I hope some of you learned something new today, because in the end, that's what it's all about.

Bij Tom's Hardware Guide is een uitgebreide review verschenen waarin een tiental Socket370 DDR moederborden gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset worden vergeleken. De borden worden stuk voor stuk kort individueel besproken voor ze gebenchmarked worden in onder andere SysMark en Quake3. Waar mogelijk heeft Tom ook SDRAM in de plankjes geprikt en een Asus CUSL2 met i815 chipset dient als vergelijking. Na negentien pagina's komt hij tot een weinig verrassende conclusie. Het upgraden naar een DDR plankje voor de Pentium III is zo goed als nutteloos tenzij je het puur en alleen voor features als ATA100, AGP4x of USB wil doen:

This test of 10 boards with Apollo Pro 266 chipsets has proven that for your day-to-day business, using DDR SDRAM memory with the Pentium III doesn't offer any discernible advantages over using SDRAM memory (in combination with the Intel 815). Since Intel still only offers its own 815 chipsets for use with the Pentium III, the Apollo Pro 266 is a viable alternative.

Whoever wants to avail themselves of an appropriate board from this test series should select one of the combination boards. In this way, there is no need to purchase expensive DDR SDRAM memory. After all, you've got to spend $60 or more (especially for CL2) for a 128 MB DDR SDRAM module, whereas an SDRAM module only costs $30. In this case, the Shuttle AV32 is worth consideration. With all of its features and its combination interface, we heartily recommend this board.

In een bericht op The Inquirer wordt verder gegist naar de Kyro III videokaart. Volgens een eerder bericht zou deze worden voorzien van T&L en nieuwe aanwijzingen vanuit de arcade-wereld lijken deze ontwikkeling te bevestigen en werpen bovendien een nieuw licht op de methode die het bedrijf wil gebruiken. Het was reeds bekend dat het bedrijf voor de Naomi 2 serie aan een externe T&L chip genaamd 'Elan' werkt. Elan levert maximaal 10 miljoen polygonen per seconde en ondersteunt tot zes lichtbronnen in hardware, waardoor hij qua vermogen het beste te vergelijken is met de originele GeForce. Naomi 2 zal voorzien zijn van twee PowerVR chips met elk een eigen geheugeninterface en één Elan. Het ziet er dus naar uit dat het bedrijf de gedachtengang van 3dfx wil gaan volgen voor Kyro III en IV:

Elan will be used on Naomi and Naomi 2 consoles - something that's already well known - but what is interesting is that NAOMI 2 will combine two PowerVR chips, each with its own 800 MB/s memory interface, with a T&L geometry co-processor codenamed Elan.

Radeon 2 Maxx will not be alone. Kyro may use this technology to make a 3D beast with two Kyro 3 processors.

This two chip solution may well become the Kyro 4 card, which we have already seen on the roadmaps, and may become a real threat for both Graphzilla NV 27.5 - codename of the X Box graphic chip and NV 25-30 too.

Microsoft houdt nog steeds vast aan een release van Windows XP in de tweede helft van 2001. Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid kun je Windows XP in oktober op de schappen vinden. Release Candidate 2 staat voor begin juli gepland welke eind juli wordt opgevolgd door de Release to Manufacturing versie. Microsoft zelf geeft echter nog geen exacte datum en geeft aan het product op de markt te zetten wanneer deze daar geschikt voor is:

Internal schedules and reports from a variety of sources are now placing the retail availability of Windows XP in October, causing some analysts and pundits to claim that Microsoft has delayed its latest operating system. But Microsoft has denied these claims, stating that a firm release date had never been announced. "What we have said is that quality is the number one driver for the delivery of Windows XP," a Microsoft spokesperson said late Friday. "Nothing has changed from our standpoint of a release in the second half of 2001."

[..] So you're going to be hearing a lot this week about Windows XP delays. Don't believe a word of it. Internal schedules will continue to be adjusted, as they always are. Industry wags will get quoted, and those publications that rely on controversy will publish their Chicken Little stories of the week. But none of this changes one simple fact: Windows XP will ship in the second half of this year. That has never changed.

The Inquirer meldt dat het gebruiken van Thunderbird processors in dual opstelling geen enkel probleem is. AMD probeert de indruk te wekken dat alleen Palomino ondersteund wordt en dat andere processors 'zouden kunnen werken'. Bronnen van de site melden echter het tegenovergestelde; Tyan zou het hele dual Socket A bord rond de Thunderbird hebben ontworpen en op dit moment nog hard werken aan een speciale versie van de plank die met twee Palomino's kan werken.

Wellicht is dit de verklaring voor de mysterieuze 760MPX chipset, die terug te vinden is op het Tyan Thunder K7X moederbord. Deze plank heeft verder exact dezelfde specs heeft als de normale Thunder K7 met 760MP chipset. Binnen een week moeten de eerste samples van het bord naar reviewers gestuurd worden, maar deze mogen hun bevindingen pas bekend maken zodra de NDA wordt opgeheven:

According to this source, samples of the Tyan "Guinness" 760MP dual board and CPUs should arrive for testing in a week's time, but the benchmarks will be hedged about with the evil bane of computing known as a Monster NDA (non disclosure agreement).

[...] AMD tells everyone who will listen (the press and its channel), that the fine Guinness 760MP board may not only run Palomino chips. This would be fine and dandy, except that there are so-called Slotket things about for Socket A solutions too. Sort of an AMD Fugue for T'Birds and Palos. *

Ladies and Gentlemen: We think the Tyan rushing around means that we are likely to see Palominos probably late May or early June, in stockist everywhere, together with dual Guinness - not Foster - boards.

Electic Tech heeft een interview gehouden met Dan Wood, de vice-president van marketing bij Matrox. De vragen richten zich vooral op de eventuele terugkeer van het bedrijf naar de markt van de gamers. Het eerste antwoord is niet veelbelovend; de huidige G450 kan nog vrij redelijk meekomen. Daarna gaat het er echter een stuk beter uit zien. Het bedrijf beseft dat 3D steeds belangrijker wordt en dat het stom zou zijn om dat te negeren. Nieuwe snufjes worden continu geëvalueerd, zoals Voxel acceleration en 48 bit kleurverwerking. Wood sluit af door te zeggen dat het bedrijf misschien stil is, maar dat 400 man continu aan het werk zijn om nieuwe producten te ontwerpen:
