De Cascades beschikt over 256 Kb on-die L2 cache en draait op 667 Mhz. De prijs van 69.800 Yen is ongeveer F 1480,- en da's wel weinig voor een Xeon. De PPGA versie van de PIII 750 die op dezelfde site (hier) staat moet maar liefst 88.800 Yen (F 1885,-) opbrengen.

No big surprise here as the ATI, as usual, kicks the crap out of the GeForce under 32bit. 32Bit rendering is obviously an area that ATI has focused much efforts on as they have typically beat out other cards all the time in this mode. This is great news for gamers because more games, especially ones built on the Quake 3 engine, will be using true color textures.
I do hope that in time ATI will go back and re-optimize their drivers so they can also get better 16bit speed as there are still quite a bit of gamers that, for some lame-brain reason, still want to run their games in 16bit. Also because only the more recent games are supporting textures higher than 16bit.
The other thing that I guess we'll have to wait and see is how the Maxx will compare to the DDR-based GeForce cards that are now starting to hit the market. I could only imagine how the Maxx would perform if it were using DDR as well.

The A3D demos that come with the drivers are very impressive. Move behind a wall and you can hear the sound effects coming from behind the wall being occluded. But how does it handle in actual games? We tested the SonicVortex2 with Quake 3 Arena, which supports A3D 2.0. Quake 3 Arena already has some level of '3D sound' (more like stereo) built into the engine which makes it possible to hear directional sound effects. With A3D turned on, we found a huge drop in frame rate, but were able to hear gunfire being occluded behind corners. The drop in frame rate was quite substantial. The benchmarks tell us that with A3D turned on, rates drop by as much as 32%!

CGO bouwde een review rond de ATI Rage Fury Pro, een all-in videokaart met video in- en uitgang. Wat betreft performance stelt de Fury Pro niet zo gek veel voor, een oude TNT2 huppelt er met gemak voorbij:

Eurogamer verrijkt ons leven met een review van de Annihilator Pro. Zoals inmiddels bekend mag zijn is dit een GeForce 256 met 150MHz DDR SGRAM, wat 'm de snelste videokaart van dit moment maakt:

In game the Annihilator Pro is extremely fast, and while most games may not support T&L acceleration directly yet, there is a performance increase due to the increased fill rate of the GeForce. It is even possible to turn on every feature at high bit depth and resolution and still maintain a reasonable framerate in games like Quake 3 Arena, although no hardcore gamer would want to play at such a low frame rate.

It is interesting to note that the test system used is only a P2-450 based machine. It is surprising to see such a performance increase despite this CPU limitation. Hopefully we should be upgrading the test platform next year (fortunately only days away now), and it will be interesting to see how the Annihilator Pro performs with a "real" CPU.

It ain't easy for developers when hardware support is spotty and I just hope that the current lack of cross-brand standardization doesn't "bust a cap in bump mapping's boo-tay."
