De tweede MP3 speler in het nieuws vandaag is de Compaq iPAQ Personal Audio Player. In deze review van MP3.com kunnen we lezen dat de speler wordt geleverd met 64MB geheugen en plaats heeft voor twee extra modules van 32MB. Twee AAA-batterijen ('kleine' penlites) zorgen voor zo'n negen uur power. De iPAQ kan niet alleen MP3 aan, maar ook WMA en AAC. De MP3's moeten wel een maximum bitrate hebben van 256kbps. Naast ID3 tag ondersteuning, is er een USB-aansluiting voor het uploaden van songs, een voice recorder functie en een AM/FM tuner. De iPAQ is voor $249 nu nog alleen in de VS verkrijgbaar.

There are preset equalizer levels for jazz, rock and classical music, as well as bass and treble control. Other playback controls are shuffle and repeat. At its highest volume, louder than most of us can stand, the iPAQ still sounds exceptional.

No complaints about the included RioPort Audio Manager software. Our guess is most first-time users will figure out the process of transferring songs to the player without ever referring to help. The software also lets you record your CDs in various formats and bitrates. Maximum is 256kbps for MP3s. We also liked the speedy file-transfer rate (from hard drive to player) of about one minute for a four-minute song.

Buttons are clear and instantly mastered. The jumbo play/pause button gives you fidget-free control while the iPAQ is deep in your pocket.

Other accessories included are a standard pair of earphones and a USB cable. Besides MP3s, the iPAQ supports WMA and AAC audio formats.

More than just talk, or music. It's what's inside that counts. 64MB of memory provides enough space for up to two hours of digital-quality music, plus you have room to upgrade. Onze Russische kameraden van XBit-Labs kregen van hun bronnen te horen dat Soyo in januari begint met de levering van een nieuw Socket 370 plankje op basis van de VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset. Dit bord met de bijzonder creatieve naam SY-7VPA266 heeft 3 184-pins DIMM slots, 5 PCI slots en een AGP slot. Soyo gebruikt de VIA VT8233 southbridge, die onder meer support heeft voor AC97 sound, 4 USB poorten en een FireWire poort:

Our sources told us that SOYO is planning to ship its FC-PGA/Socket370 mainboard supporting DDR SDRAM and based on VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset – SY-7VPA266 in January. Note that we mean not the announcement but the shipments, which is totally different thing. The mainboard will have VT8233 South Bridge, which is an enhanced version of VIA686B.

This will be an ATX mainboard with VT8633 North Bridge and VT8233 South Bridge, supporting 2 ATA/100 channels, IEEE1394 Link, 4 USB ports, AC97 sound, APIC, APM, Super I/O with HW monitoring and HSP modem. Viking Components meldt in een press release dat het erin is geslaagd om een 56K modem in een piepklein CompactFlash kaartje samen te prakken. Dromer schrijft dat er nu al weer benchmarks beschikbaar zijn van de definitieve versie van DirectX 8.0, die sinds vandaag op Microsoft's site te downloaden is. Bij Ctrl-Alt-Del is te lezen dat de verwachte snelheidswinst absoluut niet terug te vinden is in de nieuwe dll'tjes. Uit het plaatje met de 3DMark 2000 resultaten is zelfs af te leiden dat DirectX 7.0 sneller was in de meeste gevallen. Verder is ook de hardware T&L niet in goede staat volgens de auteur van het artikel. Kortom, nog geen reden om snel te updaten:

Why are the triangles scores (except for the 1light count) equal and in some cases better when using P3 optimization? Is this to say that T&L is not functioning as it should and is indeed broken under DirectX 8.0 as some say? Perhaps it is the benchmarking applications since they are written with DirectX 7 in mind. Perhaps the drivers need more tuning to work under DirectX 8.0. Perhaps it is a combination. To me it would seem that T&L is not functioning, as it should.

My question is what happened to the performance boost in DirectX 8.0 BETA 146? Why was that performance boost not maintained in DirectX 8.0 final? The increase in performance from DirectX 8.0 BETA 146 plus the performance increase from NVIDIA driver 6.47/7.17 would have been an enormous performance increase. Unfortunately BETA 146 is expired.

When shopping for a new motherboard there a few things that must be considered.

1. Quality! This is the very foundation that your whole computer is based on, so DON'T buy a cheap motherboard that has a lot of gimmicky frills or a poor quality rating. Remember you get what you pay for. If you buy a no name motherboard for $50 from someone who convinced you that it was the best thing since sliced bread and it had a real pretty box, don't come crying to me when you computer wont boot or you smell smoke.

2. Features. What is important to you. UDMA, USB, AGP, gaming, internet ? All of the above? If you are like me then you want it all!

3. How far do you want to go and what is the intended purpose? i.e. Workstation, Server, Ultimate Gaming Rig ect.. There are big differences as to how far you can safely take your CPU and peripherals and the motherboard play a big part in it.

4. If you are building a new computer, and want to get the most out of your new FC-PGA, consider gearing it toward the newer Intel or VIA chipsets, and be sure it offers "Official 133MHz Support." Not only will it remain upgradeable longer, but it will allow you to overclock further due to the 1/2 clock divider.

Bedrijven als Intel, AMD, VIA en Transmeta doen hun uiterste best om meer en meer snelheid uit hun ontwerpen te slepen. Helaas begint op dit moment de natuurkunde tegen te werken, het wordt namelijk steeds moeilijker om de chips te verkleinen. Er worden tijdelijke oplossingen uit de kast getrokken zoals het gebruik van koper, maar zo'n beetje alle analisten zijn het er over eens dat men nooit efficiënt onder de 0.10 micron kan produceren met de huidige methodes. IBM heeft daarvoor een oplossing bedacht: Silicon-On-Insulator, een techniek die het mogelijk moet maken om over een paar jaar 5GHz processors te kunnen maken die ook nog eens zuinig zijn met stroom. SysOpt.com heeft er een artikel over geschreven, waarin wordt uitgelegd waarom SOI nodig is, wat de voordelen zijn en hoe het tot stand is gekomen:

The MOS circuit is slower because a capacitance develops between the impurity layers and the silicon substrate. This boundary area is known as the junction capacitance layer. In 2002 zou de techniek op de markt moeten verschijnen. Motorola en Compaq (Alpha) hebben al SOI chips, respectievelijk de G4e en de 21264E. AMD is van plan om voor haar 0.13 micron process ook SOI te gebruiken.

Sagem, een Franse producent van mobiele telefoons, en Microsoft, kondigen de SAGEM WA3050 aan. Deze Pocket PC is uniek: het is de eerste massa geproduceerde Pocket PC met geïntegreerde dualband GSM/GPRS mobiele telefoon. Het grote voordeel, van deze Pocket PC tegenover andere Pocket PC's of mobiele telefoons, is dat je totaal geen draden of expansiesloten meer nodig hebt. Het apparaat is, in tegenstelling tot de meeste nieuwe apparaten, eerst in Europa te koop, en zal pas later naar de VS verhuizen . Ook leuk aan deze pocket PC is dat je hem makkelijk in een MP3 speler kan omtoveren:

Over de prijs wordt in dit artikel niets gezegt, en in hun online winkel heb ik nog niets kunnen vinden, maar ik verwacht dat je voor die prijs een leuk desktop systeempje kan kopen .
