Nieuwe Quake 3 Demo binnenkort

I’m working on updating the full demo today. We’ll bash on it a bit and get it out there over the next few days. Once it’s out there I’ll be updating the cdkey authorize server to the final version. Unfortunately this is not compatible with the demo test, so you’ll need to upgrade to either the full version of Q3A (woo hoo!) or download the new demo.

Intel's Frequency ID Utility review

I'm sure most of you out there have heard of the nightmares that CPU manufacturers and system integrators face in regards to counterfeit CPU's. By counterfeit I'm talking of CPU's that are remarked to reflect a different speed or CPU model that the part wasn't intended to be. Why would someone bother to do this? There is a simple reason. The company that remarks these CPU's can collect more money for their remarked parts by selling them as higher speed parts. Most computer nuts are all in favor of multiplier-clocking CPUs. However, they would be extremely upset if they went and purchased a CPU with the idea of over-clocking it a bit when in fact the part is really a 300MHz CPU marked as being a 450MHz. Unfortunately, remarked CPU's will probably always be a part of the computer industry. Although Intel can't control the remarking of CPU's, they have provided a clever CPU Frequency ID Utility that can provide the user with a report of what their CPU actually is.

Door Femme Taken, 23 november 1999 20:012 reacties, bron: Network World Fusion

"We feel that by combining Red Hat's strengths in servers and workstation technology with Cygnus' expertise in small devices, we're creating a compelling story for the post-PC world," Troan says. "We think it will be very important in future enterprise networks to have smaller devices talking back to servers on the back end," as small networked devices begin to take the place of portable PCs for some remote computing tasks, he says.

Troan [Red Hat director of engineering] says having the technology for Linux server and handheld devices under one roof will speed development of Linux-based applications for the two platforms.

"We will now offer a single set of APIs, libraries and programming tools for everything from systems such as palm-tops and handheld devices to powerful servers," Troan says. This will help programmers because they will have one set of APIs to write to for both platforms.

Chenming Hu, a professor electrical engineering and computer sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, said the tiny transistor was much smaller than any other ever developed.

[...] The Berkeley breakthrough, announced in a news release, changed the design of the "gate", or switch, on the transistor which controls the flow of electric current in electronic devices.

While previously this gate was a flat conductor that controlled only one side of the passage through which the current flows, the Berkeley team has redesigned it as a fork-shaped prong straddling both sides of the passage.

This gives much better control and reduced current leakage, meaning the transistor can be made much smaller.

Hu said the FinFET's gate is 18 nanometers long, or about the width of 100 atoms. While far too small to be viewed by the naked eye, it is visible through a scanning electron microscope.

Check ZDNet voor het volledite nieuwsartikel.

Leadtek Winfast GeForce 256 review

The board looks pretty standard and ships with 32MB of 200MHz (5ns) single data rate SDRAM. The control panel provides a clock-rate utility, but even clocking the card up didn't seem to affect game performance much. We were able to run at speeds as high as 135MHz at the core clock and 200MHz at the memory clock, and the card ran stable for hours. (Note that all benchmarks are run at the card's default speed settings of 120MHz core clock and 166MHz memory clock.)

Novell, the network software giant, is taking a plunge into open source. The company is putting the finishing touches on a new open source license -- dubbed the Novell Cooperative License -- and reportedly is close to receiving the approval of the open source community, Wide Open News has learned. "Open source is very much part of the future of software and Novell wants to participate in this movement," said Novell CEO Eric Schmidt.

[...] Novell's open source efforts are sure to involve its NDS directory, which will face stiff competition from Microsoft's Active Directory when Windows 2000 is finally released. Novell is not yet ready to say which pieces of its source code will be opened. Still, the move appears to be the real thing.

Taking a look at the higher end chipsets we will see the arrival of KX133 based motherboards, which offers PC133, 2 GB memory max, 4 DIMM slots, supports 4 USB ports, AGP 4X and AC97. The release of KX133 is scheduled for the beginning of 2000, so that we should not have to wait for long anymore. From what I hear through the grapevine, AMD is working closely with VIA to make sure the performance of this chipset is optimal. With the addition of all these features, the Athlon based systems take a big jump not only in performance but feature-set. It is only a matter of time before this chipset sees modifications to support DDR memory sometime next year. It seems that ABIT was a bit unhappy with AMD being that it had not selected ABIT as an Athlon motherboard launch partner. ABIT went on to explain that it felt tossed aside because it had given AMD a helping hand in the early days of K5 and had not been acknowledged since. Maybe this explains the non-existent support for Super7 on ABITs part. Whatever the case may be, ABIT has decided to work on an Athlon solution but it appears that AMD has decided to give them the cold shoulder. I personally think that there is more to this story than this but speculation won't bring us Athlon support. I hope ABIT and AMD can settle their differences because the only real losers in this fight are the consumers.

Intel Roadmap scoop

  • The original Slot 1 platform is due to expire by next April (2000)
  • The Pentium III is expected to be available at 800 MHz in March
  • PIII/866 due at the end of Q2 2000 and PIII/933 due at the end of Q3 2000
  • We should see the P7 (Willamette) in the early part of Q4 2000, along with a new host platform (not GTL+)
  • The PIII/750 is due out in January for $745. The PIII/800 and 866 will initially sell for $775
  • The 533, 566, and 600 MHz Celerons will sell for $170 at the time of their release [break] Update: Ace's Hardware heeft nog meer info uit dat Hardware.fr artikel: [/break] Basically, the information was taken from Intel's November roadmap. According to this, 25% of the Pentium IIIs will be shipping as FC-PGA/socketed versions in January, 50% in February, and 75% in March. In January, the PIIIs will also be available in 100 MHz or 133 MHz versions, and it's interesting to note that the BX chipset is apparently on the roadmap until the end of 2000. BX is supposed to be phased out by i820. "i820 2," on the other hand, is due to appear around Fall 2000, though I don't have any details on the feature set.

The Celeron will be available at 533 MHz in January (as mentioned before), though the .18 micron Celerons will not appear until February (also at 533 MHz). The 566 MHz version will show up in March, with the 600 MHz chip in the summer, and finally the 633 in the fall.

According to this article, the P7 is also supposed to be using the EPIC architecture (ala IA-64), though it will be a 32-bit chip (I am questioning this, however).

Responding to a rumor flying around that Quake III Arena is not actually gold, we contacted Activision. According to Activision, the game's publisher, when the game is gold, they will issue a formal press release - which they haven't done as of yet. This does not mean that id hasn't signed off on the game, it simply means that the publisher hasn't, and that the game won't be appearing on store shelves until they do.

    Ahhhh....

I am very happy with how Q3 turned out. Probably more than any game we have done before, it's final form was very close to its initial envisioning.

I will be getting all the Q3 code we are going to release together over the next week or so. I will write some overview documentation to give a little context, and since you can do game mods without needing a commercial compiler now, I will write a brief step-by-step to modifying the game code.

I'm looking forward to what comes out of the community with Q3. The rough outline of what I am going to be working on now:

We will be supporting Q3 for quite some time. Any problems we have will get fixed, and some new features my sneak in.

I have two rendering technologies that I intend to write research engines for.

I am going to spend some time on computer vision problems. I think the cheap little web cams have some interesting possibilities.

I am going to explore some possibilities with generalizing 3D game engines into more powerful environments with broader uses. I think that a lot of trends are coming to the point where a "cyberspace" as it is often imagined is begining to be feasible.

I am going to spend more time on some Free Software projects. I have been stealing a few hours here and there to work on the matrox glx project for a while now, and it has been pretty rewarding. People with an interest in the guts of a 3D driver might want to look at the project archives at http://glx.on.openprojects.net/. The web pages aren't very up to date, but the mailing list covers some good techie information.

    Hardwareinfo.net Comdex verslag

Linux has made many leaps and bounds in the past year. One of the flaws that made Linux a poor alternative to traditional UNIX workstations is the lack of mature (fast, stable, and compatible) OpenGL libraries. The Mesa group has done a wonderful job with their OpenGL clone, but it doesn't stack up against SGI workstations; after all, it is only software rendering, and what hardware rendering existed was buggy, a pain to get working, and generally a mess. All this is about to change.

To be fair, it was not any one person's fault for the problems of the OpenGL implementations. Most of the problems with speed were encountered because X does not let applications write directly to the screen, and what protocols did exist for 3d rendering were so complex that it took ages to write and debug a driver. The complexity of X and the protocols used for rendering caused bugs to be both numerous and hard to find.

But in the past year, the foundation has been laid for full hardware OpenGL support in Linux. Precision Insight Inc. introduced a new infrastructure for 3D rendering called DRI, which allows faster rendering with less overhead, NVIDIA announced full Linux support for its current and upcoming graphics cards, and 3Dfx has released the source code for a Voodoo3 DRI implementation. These being drastic improvements and all, many of you are probably asking why this is important.

For the professional graphics artist, it would be nice to have a free software environment that has 3D acceleration. For the home user, 3D support is used most commonly in games, so if you don't play them, you probably won't need it. But it is always nice to relieve some stress by playing Quake 3 when the day is over, and not having to reboot to do so is a major plus. For software developers, it means that you can write 3D applications in Linux and not have to worry about only a few people can run the end product. All in all, this is a Good Thing (TM).

Can Linux survive without 3D support? Probably, after all it did survive for how long without it. But 3D support is welcome, as it opens the platform up to new software that could not run on it, from games to CAD applications.

Hyundai MicroElectronics today moved its family ofdouble-date-rate SDRAMdevices into volume production with a 64-Mbit chip line for high-end graphics cards.

[...] Hyundai MicroElectronics is also moving to launch 128- and 256-Mbit DDR SDRAM products that will be targeted at servers, workstations, PCs, and other applications.

[...] Hyundai expects about 85 percent of next year's DRAM market will be composed of PC100 and PC133 SDRAM, with DDR accounting for about 10 percent and Rambus DRAM making up about 5 percent of sales. In 2001, however, DDR will grow to 25 percent of the market, while Rambus is predicted to move up to about 8 percent, according to the company.

    SuSE Linux 6.1 review

Installation of SuSE is quite easy and extremely flexible, although not entirely automated--SuSE begins with a default (base) package and allows you to modify package selection to suit your needs. You can also load a few pre-configured selections (with the usual server, workstation, and complete installation options), though one ought to customize even these configurations. It is easiest just to have three or four pre-configured installations (as with Caldera), but SuSE probably has a number of reasons for taking the custom installation approach. For one thing, SuSE is more complete than most other distributions (five CD-ROMs is a lot of software, and the new 6.2 apparently has six) and customization makes more sense when dealing with so much software. Also, SuSE does not aim to be ``Linux for Idiots'' and would lose much of its flexibility were it dumbed down for people who can't decide what software they want.

One benefit of SuSE's devotion to custom installation is that SuSE has developed a system which incorporates many packages into the menuing system of KDE. In addition, YaST knows what dependencies the packages (numbering about 1000 for 6.1 and 1300 for the brand-new 6.2) have, and can automatically install these dependencies. YaST keeps track of redundancies to warn a user against installing software packages that are too similar or would be unused. Also, YaST has good descriptions of the software packages, so you always know what you're going to get (well, except for the occasional !! HIER FEHLT DAS LABEL !!). In these areas, SuSE is unique. For example, Red Hat offers far fewer packages and mostly does not incorporate selected programs into menuing systems. Caldera also offers fewer packages, and while it effectively incorporates programs into KDE, it offers four installation packages and no custom option. However, Caldera's installation program, Lizard, is probably the easiest.

TargetPC over CD-ROM X speed rating

For sometime now, I've been a loyal Mitsumi buyer and now I have proof. Overall, the Mitsumi drives read very consistently with audio and data. The real loser here is the Acer, which I'm told also sells these drives under the AOpen name. Initially, when I took the Acer out of the box, it was running firmware revision 50DT and audio discs wouldn't even play without skipping let alone do digital audio extraction (DAE) properly. After flashing the firmware to 50FT, I could then perform all the data and audio tests without any hitches. The Afreey drive has suffered many a bashing of late, with people saying that it won't read their CDs at all. I've tested two versions of this drive, differing only in firmware revision. The MagicSpin with revision 10 and an Afreey OEM drive with revision 12. Both drives operated exactly the same.

Judging by the numbers, the Afreey 56X (also known as the MagicSpin 56X) is the overall winner. If you're the type of person who needs a DAE player for your 8X writer, then this drive is for you. It easily rips audio far beyond the required 8X minimum rate.

    Mid-tower case roundup

The A500 features a sliding motherboard tray, which is a great option when you first install or remove any motherboard. The tray does hold many types of ATX style motherboards, but shows signs of a tight fit for bigger boards like ASUS’s P2B-DS. As for cooling, there is only one fan slot for a 80mm case fan, which is located on the bottom front of the case. Accessibility for internal components is a little troublesome since this case does not have the swing open or slide off side panels but rather a three-sided cover that needs to be unscrewed in 5 places.

Depending on the motherboard used in this case, the power supply may block the view of the CPU(s) and/or memory, which is where the slide out try comes in play. The only problem with that is in order to get full access to the motherboard, the wires that plug into the motherboard will need to be unplugged. The A500 also has an option for a pad or key lock for security measures.

The world\'s largest dynamic random access memory (DRAM) maker Hyundai Electronics Industries Co said on Monday it has agreed to supply one million double data rate (DDR) synchronous DRAM chips to U.S.-based NVIDIA Corp (NasdaqNM:NVDA - news) this year.

``The first deliveries of DDR SDRAMs are being shipped to NVIDIA Corporation and will be used to support their industry-leading high performance graphics processors,\'\' Hyundai said in a statement.

[...] Hyundai said it expected to reach an additional deal next year with the Santa Clara, California-based graphics processor developer to supply 1.5 million units of the chips per month.

The company said it expects its global sales of DDR synchronous DRAMs to reach some $800 million next year, accounting for about 30 percent of a world market seen at about $2.7 billion.

    Aureal over A3D3.0 beta drivers

A3D 3.0 is not yet released, neither to the public nor the wider development community. Several developers, including Shiny and id, are currently in the process of dropping 3.0 into their games. I do not have a complete list of developers and games using 3.0, but the ones I can mention are Messiah, Unreal Tournament and Quake III. These are unannounced, but were shown by us at Comdex.

The features of 3.0--geometry reverb, volumetric sound sources, MP3 decoding and Dolby Digital--will work on any existing Vortex2 card but they will be performed in software. Full hardware acceleration will require our new Vortex2 SQ3500 Turbo, just announced at Comdex.

The SDK will be released to everyone shortly and we expect that most, if not all, of our 2.0 developers will be writing to 3.0. The transition is quite simple. For example, only a couple of additional API calls are required to turn on geometry-based reverb.
