1) Unreal Tournament- WoW. You have to try it for yourself to understand where I am coming from, but for the first time I can tell exactly where an enemy is coming from, and the sounds seem to come alive, and you are even more drawn into the environment. Effect was so good that at first I found myself quite disoriented.

2) Slave Zero- The effect was 3D sound for sure, but not as good as in Unreal Tournament.

3) Grand Theft Auto 2- The sounds were great in 3D. There does remain a problem with judging from GTA2, that the only sound will be, up down left and right, something that can be produced almost identically with any stereo sound, but without all the reflections ect...

4) Drakan: Order of the Flame- The sound was great great. You could tell where the enemy was, and the rivers, and environment sounds stood out. Not as good as UT though

5) Half Life- By far the game where A3D is the best. You hear sounds distinctly behind and to the side, and echoes, reflections, and occlusions are done perfectly. When you hear a scientist begin to talk, run around him in circles to hear the 3D, then go in corners, and go next to metal, wood, and plastic surfaces to hear the change in echo, then go behind objects and become really impressed. The weapons are great sounding in full 3D too.

I used A3D on lots more games, but these were the ones I felt like talking about, and they were a great experience.

AK72 is ATX M/B, MK72 is MicroATX, both utilize a KX133 chipset. Good news for you who want to overclockable Athlon M/B is that AK72 can change the FSB up to 150MHz. It seems second overclockable M/B since K7M. Can Coppermine compete?

That's the question isn't it? Intel doesn't have to worry about AMD for now, but Intel needs to retake the speed throne before AMD is able to fix the small compatibility problems and gain market acceptance. Intel's new Coppermine technology will allow the semiconductor manufacturer to produce faster P3 processors that will hopefully keep them in the race with AMD.

Intel isn't relying solely on Coppermine to bring performance on par with the Athlon. The new 820 and 840 motherboards are also very important. In our Coppermine preview we tested our chip on a normal 810e motherboard with normal SDRAM, and the scores weren't all that impressive. Then again, the 810e chipset wasn't exactly designed for performance.

This time we managed to procure a real Coppermine setup. No, we didn't get some sissy single processor system. We got our hands on a dual Coppermine P3 733 (engineering samples) system with PC800 Rambus memory and an 840 motherboard. Check the ID pics. Read on to find out more about what's new with Coppermine and how the dual system performed in our benchmarks.

AMD's introduction of the 750MHz Athlon is likely to see some price adjustments on the other members of its high end family. As we reported last Friday, Intel will cut the price of its new Coppermine parts on the 12th of December partly, we understand, to counter the effects of recent AMD wins.

Of the two, I prefer the Leadtek board. It's significantly cheaper, and it comes with TV out and DVD player software. If you just want a board to use with a DVD-ROM drive for movies, you needn't get a GeForce; there are lots of cheaper cards that can do the job just as well. But it's a nice addition to an already great card. The Leadtek software bundle is otherwise not very exciting, but aside from the nifty demos and a couple of pretty old games the ASUS bundle has nothing going for it, either.

This time he has overclocked his PIII 733E all the way to 1264Mhz!!! Look at the amazing FSB speed of 181Mhz!! I wonder how he managed to get his system running at this incredible speed as he doesn't reveal a thing how he did it. Nevertheless he is using liquid nitrogen to cool his processor and Abit BH6 rev 1.2 with VCore set to 1.9V to run at this insane speed.

Modern CPUs produce a lot of heat. The AMD Athlon is known for that, it consumes nearly 50W at 600MHz. An overclocked CPU produces a lot more heat, because we must raise the Core-Voltage to keep the CPU stable. So we need better cooling, using bigger heatsinks. Well, the problem is, that most companies design their Athlon mainboards like AMD did it with the 'Fester' board, where the ATX-connector is placed between the Slot-A and the DIMM-Slots. Big heatsinks will not fit in there.

In the following guide I combined some Athlon boards with several coolers, to find out, which cooler will fit on which board. I didn't test the performance of the coolers. Three months after PHP 4.0 Beta 2 was released, Beta 3 is finally here. This release has a lot of changes, including a "pure" automake/libtool-based build system, Java support and lots of other stuff. All 4.0 beta users are encouraged to upgrade.

A propaganda war has already started and both sides will continue to release a flurry of benchmarks, white papers, and endorsements from \"independent\" market analysts in their favor.

Do the early adopters of Rambus-based PCs get value for their money, or simply get expensive memory with high clock rates but little to show for it? To a large extent that depends on how you use your computer. My personal opinion is that for the vast majority of users the evolutionary path (PC100 to PC133 to DDR) will be both cheaper and offer better performance for conventionally architected PCs (i.e. chipset based systems with powerful graphics cards incorporating large, high bandwidth local memories). Vision Online heeft een foto gepost van een Intel sheet waaruit opgemaakt kan worden dat midden volgend jaar de ATA66 standaard zal worden opgevolgd door ATA99, met een theoretische transfer rate van 99Mb/sec. Before you all rush out and buy a 3D Blaster Annihilator, is there anything to think about? Sure there is… As with any SDRAM based GeForce 256, it's not going to be the 'fastest 3D card' on the market for long. One can already pre-order the more expensive DDR-SGRAM GeForce 256 and Creative is also set to release a 'PRO' version of the Annihilator.

Bear in mind that Diamond is also set to release a cheaper Savage 2000 based Viper II by the end of this month. This board has already shown that it can compete in some arenas very well and also has hardware T&L capabilities (more on this one next week folks). Then there's the new darkhorse in ATI and their Aurora (which is also due out before the end of the year.

Thus as a consumer, you're faced with the same old story. Think of this analogy (shamelessly stolen from The Clash)- Should I stay (a TNT2 Ultra) or should I go (dump the TNT2U in favor of a GeForce SDRAM) now, if I stay there will be trouble (can't play T&L games with a decent fps), if I go it will double (after spending $250 the Savage 2000 & Aurora end up being faster). Complicated? Maybe so, but it's never been an easy task for the consumer who turns up at his/her local Fry's only to be \'pounced' upon by a 'know it all' salesperson.

3dfx boasts about their full scene anti-aliasing, but both the GeForce and the Savage 2000 will do that.

Do not believe the hype; I have yet to see a card that handles full-scene anti-aliasing acceptably. Everyone has been bragging about that feature as well as bump mapping on their boxes for over 12 months, yet nobody has delivered. 3dfx may well be the first one to deliver on that promise with the Voodoo4 and their s-buffer optimizations, though I since do not have a card, I am unable to judge it.

Stevemasonshadow linkte naar deze review van 3D Accelerated Gaming, over de Alpha heatsink van 3DfxCool.

So, how does it perform? Well, it took my Celeron 433 (previously running at 488) to about 84 degress (F). It allowed me to even take the 433 up to 541mHZ, running at 84-87 degress (F, 84 degress when browsing or idling, 87 when gaming). With that kind of cooling, you can really press the envelope. I imagine that if you kept your case open, that would even come down some.

This is a great fan. There's no getting around that. Then why aren't all fans built like this? Well, the price is the largest obstacle. While this unit is excellent, it'll cost you $50. Kindof steep, but all in all I definitely think it's worth it.

Major PC manufacturers Fujitsu Siemens and, we learn, Compaq have selected an AMD Athlon processor for a machine they hope to sell in volume before Christmas.

That follows reports from The Register earlier this month that Fujitsu Siemens was being forced to re-adjust its Christmas schedules because it was unable to obtain enough fast Coppermines from Intel.

It also coincides with outrage expressed by another major PC supplier, loyal to Intel, about problems with yields on the Coppermine processors.

[...] Over the last two weeks, hardware site AMD Zone has run persistent rumours from a number of sources that Gateway will also introduce a machine using the AMD Athlon processor in the near future.

Dark serveert nieuwe nVidia Win9x reference drivers, met versienummer 3.62. Op de site van nVidia lijken de drivers nog niet bekend te zijn, want daar verwijzen ze nog steeds naar 3.53. Heb je trek, dan haal je ze hier neer.

Harry stuurde een link naar de zogenaamde Episode I Stabilizer van Freeway (die japanse tent van de rode K7M OEM boards). Met deze paal kunnen we onze zwaar met heatsinks overladen PCI en AGP kaarten stutten:

Ik heb het volledige spel inmiddels ook kunnen spelen en het kickt stevig ass. De graphics zijn goed, de wagen rijdt lekker (met keyboard, moet m'n Digital Edge stuur nog uit het stof halen) en de tracks zijn super realistisch. Zoals Kenneth als zegt: het gevoel voor snelheid is grandioos. Met 200 per uur over een asfalt weggetje scheuren geeft een beangstigend gevoel, net zoals in het echt (denk ik, /me heeft geen rijbewijs ). Dus check Kenneth's review en dan koop je dat spel vanzelf.

JanKees schrijft: "Alle eerdere berichten spraken mekaar behoorlijk tegen, maar eindelijk durft iemand gewoon te zeggen wat er aan de hand is. Tom Browne van S3Planet (hebben nu een "sabbatical" ) stuurde de Savage sites een mailtje: de T&L heeft een aantal bugs in de hardware maar met wat work-arounds in de driver kan de T&L engine nog wel degelijk nuttig werk verrichten. De gefixte driver wordt over een week of zes verwacht. Alle eerdere berichten waren dus allemaal een beetje waar ":

and, for your information...

4. The intended all .18 micron version of the Savage2000 to be produced in the future _may_ have improved T&L circuitry, which would negate the need for workarounds.

gdew stuurde deze link richting Swiftech, waar men een Athlon overclock kit verkoopt die gebruikt maakt van de MC1000 peltier cooler. Het probleem met de in de weg zittende power connector van de Asus K7M werd hierbij op leuke wijze opgelost:

We built this machine because of the challenge presented by fitting our MC1000 in the K7M motherboard. The ATX connector is positioned so close to the CPU slot, that our cooler would sit right on top of it, preventing to mount the ATX array from the power supply. So we took an ATX extension and stripped the female end from its plastic casing, leaving us with 20 free wires. Each pin was then bent at a 90 degree angle, and isolated with a shrink tube. Here is how the final project looks (click to enlarge):

Thanks to this setup, the MC1000 now fits nice and snug into this wonderful Asus K7M Motherboard. It took a couple of hours to perform this modif on the ATX, but it was well worth it!
