Modern CPUs produce a lot of heat. The AMD Athlon is known for that, it consumes nearly 50W at 600MHz. An overclocked CPU produces a lot more heat, because we must raise the Core-Voltage to keep the CPU stable. So we need better cooling, using bigger heatsinks. Well, the problem is, that most companies design their Athlon mainboards like AMD did it with the 'Fester' board, where the ATX-connector is placed between the Slot-A and the DIMM-Slots. Big heatsinks will not fit in there. In the following guide I combined some Athlon boards with several coolers, to find out, which cooler will fit on which board. I didn't test the performance of the coolers. Also I didn't compare the boards to find out which is the best. This will be done in a seperate test in some days.[break]Hierboven dus een klein stukje uit de Engelse versie van het artikel. Ow ja, en de verklaring voor die Pentium II[/break]You will find all tested combinations in the table. Please don't send me emails about the used CPU. I didn't want to stress the Athlon with changing heatsinks and mainboards very often. So I used an empty (no PCB) Pentium-2 case. This SECC1-case is the same the Athlon uses, so the coolers and mainboards fit perfectly.
