The news ends hope of an October 29th release, but this was looking increasingly unlikely as there was no word on the title 'going gold' with so little time left for duplication and distribution.

Onhand heeft details gepost van hun OnHand PC pols-computer die vanaf november verkrijgbaar zal zijn, zo schrijft Nobody:

Het resultaat waar het dan uiteindelijk om ging: een P III 450 @ 4,5 x 124 op 2.0 volt bij een temperatuur van 27 C. Op de temperatuur na valt dit natuurlijk ook met wat goede luchtkoeling te bereiken, maar verder overklokken kan ik momenteel niet vanwege m'n geheugen dat niet op snelheden hoger dan 124 Mhz wil werken. Binnenkort krijg ik echter PC133 geheugen, dus daarmee moeten de 600 Mhz en hoger makkelijk te halen zijn. BTW, m'n RC5 koe graast op deze snapshot nog niet maar als ie wel aanstaat blijft de CPU temp gewoon 27 C bij een kamertemperatuur van 24 C.

Opperhoofd Tom heeft een korte preview van de S3 Savage2000 op z'n site gezet. Hier een hap over hetgeen hij op de performance van de S2K aan te merken heeft:

From the list of benchmarks, I first chose none other than Quake Arena to make some observations. Upon running benchmarks, I noted that the visual quality wasn't exactly stunning (colors bleeding here and there as well as video corruption at times) and that at high resolution (regardless of color depth) the performance was slower than I had expected. I realize that the driver will be improved as time goes by but at high resolution you usually can get a good picture of what a card can do unless the driver has some very serious issues. Keep in mind at the fill-rates S3 is claiming, it shouldn't have too much of a problem running Quake Arena at 1600x1200x16 but it did. It barely hobbled in at less than 25 FPS. That seems particularly odd to me being that the S2000 claims to have this monstrous fill-rate in multi texturing scenarios. I also noted the z-buffer problem among other visual defects so I don't think providing numbers this early is fair to the S2000 or its competition. Hopefully as the driver fixes occur, there are no performance drops. Look for our full review later this month.

VIA en S3 hebben aangekondigd een joint venture te zullen oprichten, met als doel het produceren van chipsets met geïntegreerde graphics controllers:

The joint venture will produce chipsets which incorporate S3's 3D graphics technology. Chipsets are a vital component used on the main circuit board of all PCs. PCs with graphics integrated into the chipset cost less than PCs which use a separate graphics chip. Increasing competition in the markets for both chipsets and graphics chips is encouraging companies to cooperate.

VIA and S3 are already manufacturing samples of the new chipset, said CEO Wen-Chi Chen, and would start mass production "early next year." Different versions of the chipset will be available to support desktop and notebook PCs. A version which supports Advanced Micro Devices' Athlon CPU is also under development. Potashner said his company planned to integrate its next generation graphics technology into VIA chipsets, as the technology is developed.

Volgens The Register is de release van de gemankeerde i820 chipset (met ondersteuning voor slechts 2 RIMM banken) uitgesteld naar week 48, eind november:

First, it now appears that a 2+0 i820 Rambus motherboard, that is a board with two RIMM sockets to hold only two of the costly memory modules, will arrive in week 48. Week 48 is the last week in November.

Unfortunately, although that will help save face with Rambus and its cohorts, PC vendors are unlikely to jump up and down in delight.

A two RIMM solution is not good enough to satisfy the performance needs of people who want the most out of their motherboards (mobo, see glossary).

Over SMP wordt niets gezegd in het artikeltje. Het zou goed mogelijk zijn dat Intel het daarvoor benodigde SMP pinnetje niet naar buiten heeft gelegd en dat een dual Coppermine niet zal kunnen werken op een BP6.

Volgens The Register zal AMD in het vierde kwartaal een reorganisatie doorvoeren om de verliezen te beperken. De laatste tijd zijn de kosten gedaald maar het lukt het bedrijf niet genoeg geld te verdienen met de zogenaamde "core business", het fabriceren van state-of-the-art processoren. Dit ondanks het feit dat de vraag naar AMD-producten hoog is.

Het lijkt dat er iets flink scheef zit binnen dat bedrijf.

According to news service CNN, AMD has managed to reduce expenses but is still failing to make enough money from sales of its microprocessors.

That is despite demand for its Athlon and K6-III parts being strong. Last week we reported that it had run out of the K6-III/400 part.

As well as making CPUs, AMD also does sound and very profitable flash memory business, but earlier this year sold off its programmable logic division and also made a relatively small number of employees, mostly administrative, redundant.

Well, for those people are wondering about backward compatibility when the new PC platforms switches to DDR SDRAMs, well it seems that the motherboard will have to have two types of sockets to let you use your PC100 or PC133 RAMs. From micron's pdf on the 184pin DDR SDRAM DIMM and 168pin SDRAM DIMM, the physical dimension would prevent using the 168pin DIMM in the 184pin socket, or let 184pin DIMM to get in the 168pin socket.

Volgens Digitimes Taiwan zal AMD in januari volgend jaar de K6-2+ op de markt planten. Deze evolutie van de K6-2 heeft 128Kb on-die cache, draait mogelijk op 133MHz FSB en wordt gebakken met behulp van 0,18micron technologie, zo schrijft Ace's Hardware:

According to Digitimes Taiwan, AMD revealed in a recent document to motherboard makers that K6-2+ will debut in Jan, 2000. K6-2+ will debut at 500 Mhz running at 100 Mhz FSB. The report also mentions that K6-2+ can run up to 533 Mhz, which makes me think that there may also be 133-Mhz-FSB version of K6-2+. The K6-2+ will be manufactured using 0.18 micron technology, thus shrinking its die to about 80 square mm. From what we have heard earlier, K6-2+ will have 128K L2 cache on-die. AMD has reportedly sent K6-2+ samples to motherboard makers for testing, and will start producing K6-2+ in quantity by December this year. The report also says that AMD will continue to sell K6-2 and K6-III line of processors once K6-2+ is released, but K6-2+ will have priority over the both K6-2 and K6-III. AMD also expects to sell the K6-2+ line of processors into year 2001.

More details on the K6-2+ are expected to surface soon at some AMD techical/marketing meeting. And I am wondering if that could be the AMD analyst meeting that is coming up on November 11. If you have more information on that, please let me know. TIA!

Philips Semiconductors today announced the world's first single-chip solution for 12-speed (12x) DVD-ROM drives. In addition to high-speed DVD performance, the highly-integrated SAA7811 supports 56x CD-ROM access, making it ideal for use in high-end CD/DVD combination drives.

``The ability to reliably read DVD disks at 12 times normal speed depends on the quality of the drive's servo control loops,'' said Yasuo Suzuki, Philips Semiconductors' product marketing manager for DVD products. ``Philips Semiconductors' wealth of experience in the design of the servo mechanisms and their control electronics has enabled us to maintain the lead in high-performance DVD systems.''

Packaged in a single 208-lead quad flat pack, the SAA7811 combines a channel decoder, block decoder, servo control and microcontroller functions. Even in lower speed drives, this level of functionality previously required the use of several ICs. Built-in multimedia functions include playback of audio CDs at speeds greater than 1x using a DRAM buffer, IEC 60958 digital audio interfacing, and audio playback via an on-chip DAC with a 4x over-sampling filter and digitally controlled volume/muting.

Additionally, the host interface supports ATA/ATA-2 PIO and ATA/ATAPI-4 Ultra-DMA data transfer modes, which can also be configured as a generic DMA interface for special applications. The spindle motor control for Constant Angular Velocity (CAV), Constant Linear Velocity (CLV) and pseudo-CLV modes enables the SAA7811 to read a wide range of disk formats, including CD-ROM, CD-DA, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM and DVD-Video.

Pricing and Availability

The SAA7811 one chip DVD-ROM is priced at $10.00 in quantities 100,000. Samples are available now and production will be in Q4 1999.

The digital audio imaging company, Aureal, reported today that it intends to announce one new A3D-enabled game each business day between now and Jan. 1. The new games will appear each day at a3d.com. The new A3D-enabled titles will take full advantage of the features included in Aureal's recently announced retail sound card products, the Vortex SQ1500 and the Vortex2 SQ2500. Each of the models is available with software bundles that include Drakan, Heretic II and Slave Zero.

This is all I can confirm at this time:

-We are working on an open source, cross platform sound architecture which will include all the advanced features (e.g. 3D/positional audio, reverb, etc) which Windows games have.

-Creative has committed resources to help us get this project out the door and to ensure that our sound architecture will be supported on their cards under Linux.

-The project will be wide open. Any one will be able to contribute, and we hope to garner widespread hardware support.

It's still very early on here, so people need to be a little patient. That said, I hope to be able to ship all of our Q1 products using the new architecture.

GA-Source bericht dat Creative Labs Open Source Linux drivers voor de Soundblaster Live! heeft gereleased:

As promised last Friday, Creative has today released version emu10k1of their Linux Sound Blaster Live! drivers. Of note is that these drivers have been released under the GPL license.

Along with the driver they have also launched their Open Source website that contains a FAQ, links to their CVS and Bugzilla.

The board will have either 6 PCI slots, with 1 ISA and 1 AMR, or the more convential 5/2 arrangement. Still only 3 DIMM's although the onboard AC97 is still included. The worst fear of movie studios has been realized: DVD movie encryption has been broken.

A utility called DeCSS is currently floating around on the Net that will read a DVD movie disc and save the file on a hard disk, minus the encryption. All that’s required is a DVD-ROM drive -- since CD-ROM drives can’t read the 4.7GB DVD movie discs -- and a lot of disc space. The faster the CPU, the faster it will process the file. It takes around 10 minutes to process a .VOB file on a 500MHz Pentium III.

The particular model reviewed here is their external DP30. This drive is capable of a massive 30GB (15GB native, 30GB compressed) for a mere $399. OnStream also offers an internal IDE model which features the same amount of space, or an internal SCSI version which supports up to 50GB cartridges. The DP30 is way past the days of Iomega's Ditto drives. Think back when backing up your hard drive took what seemed like ages, and slowed your system down to a pathetic crawl, while still making a horrible screeching noise almost like a dot-matrix printer. OnStream's drives do none of those. With a transfer rate of 2.5GB/hour (3.6GB/hour IDE, 7.2GB/hour SCSI) you can back up your entire 10GB hard drive in 4 hours, while your sleeping. That's right, since the DP30 is rather silent, you most likely won't even notice it if your computer is in the same room as you.

Winmag bracht onlangs het nieuws naar buiten dat Microsoft vanaf volgend jaar geen OEM CD's meer zal leveren met Windows installs die op nieuwe computers worden geleverd. OSOpinion heeft een artikeltje geschreven over deze idiote maatregel:

Last week, Winmag broke the story that as of 2000, Microsoft won't include the CD to the OEMs given to the customers who buy new computers. According to Winmag, this included Win 9x, Millennium and NT 4 and 5.

Apparently the only way that Microsoft will give the CDs is if the OEMs introduce a BIOS locking mechanism so that the Windows CD will only work for the computer in question. Why has Microsoft come up with such an insane demand?

It appears that MS loses money with each new computer purchase because the buyer uses his old CD or installs the only copy to 8 machines. Let me pause here and take out a Kleenex and clear away those tears.

Yamaha heeft een officieel Dolby Surround certificaat verworven voor hun nieuwe XG-Movie 5.1 geluidskaart, zo schijft AVault:

Fragging in Dolby surround has become a reality. Dolby has completed its engineering studies and sent approval and certification to Yamaha for the XG-Movie 5.1 Digital Surround Card. The Yamaha XG-Movie 5.1, targeted at PC enthusiasts and gamers, includes Yamaha's YMF744 and YSS912 audio chips, which support Dolby Digital, and DTS Digital Surround. The new card provides a variety of surround effects such as church, jazz, hall, disco, live, stadium and theatre using a sub-DSP (digital signal processor) in the Yamaha YSS912.

The Yamaha XG-Movie 5.1 is a high fidelity, PCI sound card that outputs 6 channels of audio (left, right, left-surround, right-surround, center and LFE, sometimes referred to as subwoofer) and delivers cinema quality effects. The card accepts both analog and digital input sources and provides both analog and digital output. Signal to noise ratio (S/N) is greater than 96 dB. The XG-Movie 5.1 sound card will ship to OEMs and distributors this month. The expected retail price is $199.

Als we nVidia mogen geloven (de benchmarks komen direkt van nVidia zelf, dus er is geen reden om aan te nemen dat ze betrouwbaar zijn ) dan gaat de Quadro hard regeren: professionele kaarten van Intergraph, HP en SGI gaat-ie met gemakt voorbij.

This latest product from NVIDIA completes the industry's first and only top-to-bottom product family, offering graphics products suited for the demanding professional workstation all the way down to the sub-$1000 PC market. By allowing engineers to achieve higher levels of real-time interactivity and image quality; engineers, animators and other creative professionals overall design time and costs will decrease dramatically.

Storage Review bericht dat Quantum binnenkort de Atlas V, opvolger van de IV 7200rpm SCSI drive, aan zal kondigen:

Though I don't see it yet posted on their website, today Quantum will announce the succesor to the Leaderboard-rated Atlas IV. Quantum's latest 7200rpm SCSI unit, the Atlas V, increases its specs across the board. Seek time has been shaved to 6.3ms. The drive packs over 9 gigs of data per platter. Buffer size has been increaed to 4 megs.

The drive is slated for 1Q 2000 availability, in capacities of 9.1 GB, 18.2 GB, and 36.4 GB.
