Jeremy van AGN heeft een aantal Matrox G400 benchmarks gepost. De Quake2 en 3DMark99 resultaten laten het inmiddels bekende beeld zien:
- G400 sterk bij zware processors
- G400 snelst bij 32-bit rendering (met snelle CPU)
- Q2 Crusher framerates zijn laag, G400 heeft moeite met complexe geometrie
- G400 véél sneller op extreem hoge resoluties
Dat is zo'n beetje wat ik er uit kan halen. De benchmarks vind je hier.
3DConcept (zwitserse site) heeft speculaties gepost over de S3 GX4, opvolger van de Savage4:
Gemäss id-Entwickler gehört S3 neben nVidia und 3dfx zu den Firmen, welche an T&L-Lösungen arbeiten. Man nehme nun einmal an, der GX4 - Chip integriere 2 komplette Savage4-Kerne sowie eine Transforms & Lighting - Einheit und selbstverständlich höhere Taktfrequenzen. Damit würde der Chip bei Multitexturingspielen zum Quadrenderer, da jede seiner zwei Pipelines mit 2 TMUs ausgestattet wären. Da S3 traditionsgemäss stets auf aktuelle Fertigungsstrukturen zurückgreift, könnte man dem in 0.18u gefertigten GX4 auch 128bit Pfade verpassen, ohne die zulässige maximale Anzahl Transistoren zu überschreiten. Mit einer solchen Konfiguration wäre S3 durchaus wieder mit dabei, beim Spiel um den besten 3D-Chip. Seien wir gespannt. Der Spätherbst 99 wird bestimmt spannender als der Frühling 99, der uns nur lauwarme Aufgüsse bestehender Architekturen brachte.

Intel zal in 2002 overstappen op een koper produktietechnologie met een 0,13micron fabricageproces, wat zal resulteren in kleinere en snellere chips met lagere produktiekosten:

On a broad scale, the announcement means that a chip battle in the next millennium is beginning to take shape. Intel said today it will use larger "wafers" to reduce manufacturing costs by 30 percent. Intel will also move to the next generation of production technology called "0.13." Motorola also said today that together with Infineon Technologies it has transitioned successfully to bigger wafers on a pilot line for making memory chips. GamePC.com heeft een review gebouwd rondom de Guillemot Xentor 32 met TNT2 chip op 175/183Mhz, iets hoger geklokt dan de Ultra TNT2 kaarten van o.a. Diamond en Asus. Helaas valt er in de review geen info te vinden over het overklokken van de Xentor32. Wel hebben ze een vergelijking met de Creative 3DBlaster TNT2 Ultra (op 150/183Mhz):
After the Blaster TNT2 Ultra turned in some dissappointing numbers during its testing, Guillemot's Xentor32 shows the performance increase that the increased core speed brings. The jump in core speed from 150 to 175 MHz is about 17%. While that did not translate directly into benchmark increases (expect at the 3D Mark 99 at 1280x1024 with 32-bit color), the Xentor32 shows a marked improvement over its bretheren. A roughly 10% increase in performance at higher resolutions (1024x768 and higher) is obtained with the faster Xentor32. Using Brett "3-Fingers" Jacob's Crusher demo, we can see how the TNT2 Ultra is indeed CPU limited. Since all the benchmarks are relatively the same at the lower 800x600 resolution, its obvious that the card is no longer the limiting factor. The CPU now becomes a bottleneck.

The digital DIN is a very nice feature of these speakers. It allows you to connect them to a SoundBlaster Live (not value) through the digital connector. So what’s that mean? Well, basically it means the sound is kept in digital form rather than analog. Which gets you a slightly "cleaner" sound. No noise on these speakers. The difference in sound quality is almost negligible, but it provides an easy way to connect it. It’s just simpler to me to plug one cable in than to make sure I have front and back in the correct plugs, and have to change it if it’s wrong. If you weren’t planning on a new soundcard should you buy the Live just for these speakers? No way

Oddly enough, the same clouds were evident in the sample taken from a Tamarack scanner we reviewed in our first roundup more than a year ago, but the problem doesn't occur on scans from any other manufacturer. With grayscale scans, the images were extremely dark and grainy.

The Quantum Atlas IV turned in the best scores to date from a 7200rpm SCSI drive, in most cases besting the previous champ, the Western Digital Enterprise WDE18300. Business Disk WinMark results run under Windows 95 place the Quantum 8% faster than the Western Digital drive. High-End WinMark tests yield similar results, with the Atlas outgunning the WD drive by 9%.

Intel confirmed today it made price cuts on Celerons and its 400MHz Pentium II last weekend.The price cuts have come a month earlier than anticipated.
The Celeron 466 now costs $147/1000, the 433MHz part $113/1000, and the 400MHz Celeron $93. The 366MHz part drops to $69/1000.
The PII/400 now costs $173/1000, a ten per cent reduction.
Further price reductions will now come mid-July. Our pricing roadmap should now be viewed with these changes in mind.

Sources said that AMD will formally introduce its K7 processor on the 28th of June and will have one processor running at 600MHz.There will also be 500MHz and 550MHz flavours, as previously revealed.
Processors will ship to system integrators on the 3rd of August. In the first two weeks of August, there will be volume shipments of the product, and at introduction time, AMD will also have tier one vendors demoing machines based on the K7.
As you might expect, the K7 will not be called the K7. It could be called the Alereon (see earlier story), but we hope to have more details on this later today.
In August, distributors will be carrying stocks of the product, we can confirm. The ramp will be sufficient to supply some end user needs.
The K7 at 600MHz will be the first time AMD has ever introduced a processor which beats an Intel chip.
The significance of this will not be lost on OEMs and PC manufacturers, who are likely to queue up to use the processor. Gateway is a definite, and it is likely Compaq will not be far behind.
Yesterday, AMD tried to persuade us to sign a non-disclosure agreement but instead we decided to take the K7 challenge and accumulate info elsewhere.
AMD will not comment on the details above.

For testing purposes of the backup, I decided to add all of the data in my office onto the tape. The machine with the drive is my testing system, while my main system and laptop were also copied by the Onstream drive. The backup from my main system to the drive averaged 45MB per minute for the backup, which means that the 9GB of data took about 3.3 hours. Considering the fact that my old Ditto backup drive took about 8 hours for 3GB, this drive is a speed demon.

It's simply incredible. For the first time you almost feel as if your monitor is merely a small window that looks into the game's world! I felt compelled to peek "into" my monitor. I think a lot of Tomb Raider fans will be bumping their hands into the monitor a lot! The 3D here doesn't make your graphics float way out like those red/blue 3D glasses of that bygone era, but makes what you see on your screen have depth and it simply fools your eyes remarkably well.

De jongens & meisje van Thresh's Firingsquad hebben de Hercules Dynamite TNT2 gereviewed. Dit is dus weer de non-Ultra TNT2 versie op 145/170MHz. In tegenstelling tot de review van GA-Source, eerder vandaag, heeft Firingsquad wél info over het overklokken van de kaart:
Well, after the trial and error (and many reboots), we came to rest at 170MHz on the core side, and 190MHz for the memory clock. Quite a feat! This puts the Hercules Dynamite TNT2 effectively 36% faster than the nVidia default for the core speed, and 26.7% faster than default on the memory side. Considering what you pay for it, this is an amazing feat, as it puts the clock and memory speeds higher than the nVidia default TNT2 Ultra speeds, and almost at the 175/200 speeds that Hercules is using for their own Dynamite TNT2 Ultra line. Of course Hercules only guarantees that the card will run at 145/170. No more, no less. As ever, overclocking varies widely from case to case. We sincerely hope that all of you out there are able to hit the same speeds that we were able to hit, or even higher, but realize that if you buy the card expecting to hit 170/190, then you may be fooling yourself.

Je krijg er $0,40 per uur voor dat klinkt misschien niet veel, maar als je aan de kabel zit kan je best wel ff een scriptje in elkaar draaien om volledig automatisch te surfen,
en dan tikt het aardig aan als je hem dag en nacht aan hebt.
Alleen jammer dat het vooralsnog alleen in de USA beschikbaar is.

With the advancements in 3D rendering there have come a lot of new effects like bump-mapping, anisotropic filtering, and others which most cards will support. There is a difference though, between the two main cards which are sure to dominate. Voodoo3 and TNT2 fans have been debating the merits of the 16/22 VS 24/32 bit output, and the support for 256*256 VS 2048*2048 large textures.I've been thinking a lot about the last discussion, and I wanted to see with my own eyes what the difference was between 256*256 and 2048*2048, and what S3TC (S3 Texture Compression) and Vector Quantization Texture Compression were. To test these things, I used Quake III Arena as a reference point. I have had the test running here for a while now (Linux) and I’m sure many of you are now playing the Windows version. Quake III Arena (Q3A) uses textures up to 512*512*24.

Huge amounts of memory and large, fast caches makes these creative applications fly. On the contrary to what the Intel PIII evaluation benchmarks let you think, photo editing mostly integer intensive not FPU intensive. Only a few filters are really FPU intensive, and these filters are shown in a lot of photoshop benchmarks. I used photoshop 4.0, and recorded the time that some filters took. You should combine this with the photoshop 5.02 results from Anand to get the whole truth.Photoshop 5.02 benefits from ISSE because ISSE contains better MMX instructions, not because it is always FPU intensive. Photoshop 4.02 benchmarks show that photo editing needs integer power combined with large caches.
i-XBT Labs heeft een review gepost van het Intel SR440BX moederbord met geïntegreerde TNT en Creative ES1317 soundchip. Zoals alle Intel borden is het ding absoluut ongeschikt voor overklokken, de plank kent alleen de standaard 66 en 100MHz busspeeds:
If you have read that far, you are very unlikely to be an overclocker. Overclockers are not fond of Intel mainboards, they are even allergic to them! And that is quite understandable: you can't overclock the processor on SR440BX mainboard. The FSB frequency is set automatically either to 66 or to 100MHz. No other options. That's why if you have just become a happy owner of SR440BX, forget about overclocking.Oh, wait! We have absolutely left out another beautiful component just perfect for overclocking - the graphics accelerator. Strange as it might seem, but Riva TNT on SR440BX is overclockable. The default working frequencies are non-standard 85/100MHz, i.e. the chip and the memory are slightly slowed down. Well, it turns out already the second case with Riva TNT integrated mainboards, so, we suppose that this retardation is caused by some forcible reasons. For example, it may be the result of other system components overheating.
However, the on-board TNT can be overclocked up to 110MHz core and 125MHz memory frequency, which is actually very similar to the results shown by most ordinary graphics cards based on this chip.
3DHardware.net heeft een review gepost van de Guillemot Maxi DVD Theater. De set bestaat uit een 4 speed Hitachi DVD drive met een RealMagic Hollywood MPEG-2 decoder kaart (hé, heeft Jeroen daar vorige maand geen review van gedaan?). De reviewer doet erg blij over de performance van de set:
As we say in Sweden, S-VHS can throw itself into the wall. DVD offers supreme image quality, whether it’s viewed on a TV screen or a monitor. The Hollywood Plus card decodes the video with an excellent, clear image, and without the slightest choppiness. Even on a Pentium II / 233 system it ran smoothly in even the most intensive scenes, something a Pentium II / 450 couldn’t do with software decoding.As for the sound, the sound, it was excellent. AC-3, 5.1 sound is about as exciting as it gets and really gives your living room true cinema sound. Hale to the subwoofer!
Ik kwam via Hardware-One bij deze bandwidth meter van MSN Computing Central, waarmee je kunt zien hoe snel je verbinding is. Is denk ik wel leuk om eens uit te proberen. Zoals je ziet haal ik 500Kbps op de erg blije SURFnet verbinding hier op de HKU .

GA-Source heeft een review gepost van de Hercules Dynamite TNT2, dus de non-Ultra versie op 145/170MHz met 16Meg onboard RAM. GA-Source heeft helaas geen info over het overklokken van de kaart, wel een stukje over de drivers:
Each time I receive a piece of hardware, I test it with the drivers that the manufacturer provides me. I specifically DO NOT go out scouring the web for any possible little tweaks and changes that I could make to my registry, etc for the card. As far as I am concerned, this gives you the most realistic picture of what the hardware will do, the day you buy it, and pop it in the computer. No research time, no downloading time. To some extent, this particular review makes that policy look somewhat questionable. After all, the $149 regular TNT/2 from Hercules beat their own Ultra TNT/2 in some tests. This was SOLELY due to the difference in drivers (which just does tell you how much difference they make). So you may ask, Why didn't I retest all of the cards with newer drivers?

Microsoft today announced a licensing agreement with Creative Technology Ltd. for a number of recording studio-quality audio effects found in Creative's Environmental Audio Extensions (EAX), anapplication programming interface (API) used to add environmental sound effects to 3-D games. The licensed effects include flange, chorus, EQ and environmental reverberation.
Microsoft plans to incorporate these EAX effects into its next version of the Microsoft DirectX API, the multimedia technology behind the Windows operating system.
Hehe... Alles kan overgeklokt worden, zo bewijst Hardware-One maar eens. Mocht je je Palm te traag vinden, dan moet je hun Palm overclocking report maar eens door lezen:
As you can see above, a 20Mhz Palm III would about just match the performance of the Palm IIIx and Palm V at default speeds. I was able to push my Palm III quite a bit further to 26Mhz, obtaining a 143% relative timing to a IIIx. Not bad indeed!However, after extended period of use at 26Mhz, very very minor character corruption would appear onscreen. So I tuned it a notch lower to 25Mhz and have since used it for weeks without problems. At 137% the relative speed of a IIIx, this is good performance!
Bij 3DRage.com hebben ze een review van de Creative Labs 3D Blaster Savage4 in elkaar gedraaid. Het ding draait op een magere 110MHz:
Wait just a minute, wasn't that the default clock speed of chips 6 months ago? I thought this was supposed to be a next-generation chipset. Diamond set their StealthIII to 125Mhz clock speed which is the default setting anyway, why didn't Creative?The answer is probably in order to keep profits high at the $100 price tag, Creative made a special deal with S3 to buy their chipsets at discount price. But the bad news is the chips that Creative purchased are the chips that didn't pass Savage4's internal testing which means they were the chips that didn't hit 125Mhz in preliminary testing. Sucks, doesn't it?
De overklokbaarheid is ook niet om over naar huis te schrijven: het maximale dat 3DRage eruit kreeg was 117Mhz...

Magnetic Fields is doing a great job on the audio part, but they haven't forget the visual thing. Every vehicle in the game is manual carefully designed in a CAD program. To have all the needed data from the cars, a group of Magnetic Fields went to a workplace of rally-cars, and they took the measures of several cars. They also took pictures of the cars, so they could use these as textures. Specifically to mention: the several weather-effects. The rain and other weather behaviours are done really impressive. Every raindrop is a single 3D object, which falls on the windscreen. If the windscreen wipers touch that raindrop, it simply wipes it off. Really cool, I haven't seen such a thing before in any other race game!

My results show this runs cool. The limits of the clocking seems to be the memory chips, not the 3dfx chip. I cranked it from 143Mhz to 168Mhz where it ran stable. At 172Mhz I start to see artifacts though it runs okay. It is not stable when it is greater than172Mhz and will lock at ~180Mhz. (RAM is also the same on the V3 3000 board).
