Hard OCP heeft een artikeltje in elkaar gedraaid over de Afterburner Athlon overclocking device van Outside Loop Computers. De Afterburner is een van de betere apparaatjes in zijn soort, de voltage en kloksnelheden zijn makkelijk in te stellen via drie draai knoppies:

If you want to OC your Athlon without the risk of destroying it, I would say that this is what you want. As long as the specs stay the same on the K7, which it most likely will for a little while, the Afterburner is an upgrade you can take with you to your next CPU. We were able to dial a 500 to 800MHz and a 600 Athlon to 750MHz quite easily while applying voltage tweaks along the way.

One other thing that should be VERY IMPORTANT in your decision is whether or not you will have room in your case for a Golden Fingers mod. Every other mod I have seen on the market is designed so that it sticks up instead of lying across the top of the processor like the Afterburner. Now in a full tower this may not be a problem, but with a mid or mini, you may find your power supply or something else in the way. I would be very careful about this.

One last argument is gonna be the price on this baby. It is surely not cheap but neither is the quality of the product. One does not go out and have a professional printed circuit board made in small quantity for no cash at all. Rest assured that you will be getting a good unit for your greenbacks though. And as with all things, someone is bound to come whore up the market for the honest folks sooner or later anyway.

You wanna OC your Athlon? The Afterburner is something you don't want to be without.

As all video cards from this company, V6600 PURE meets customers demand for the quality and reliability. V6600 has an excellent 2D/3D performance and great OpenGL ICD. Although DVD performance is much better when compared to TNT2 but you still need a very powerful CPU to get a smooth DVD playback.

All in all, so far no other cards in its price range does your every day job better than V6600 Pure. With the on board TnL capability and good driver support, this feature rich card is today's king of the hill and even in the future, it will hold its own against next-gen products from the likes of 3dfx, ATI, or S3.

Over bij DeezTech is een review te lezen van de Swiftech MC 370-2 cooler voor op je Celeron PPGA en FC-PGA Coppermine's. Over de performance zijn ze best wel te spreken, een Celly 366 draaide er stabiel op 605MHz.

So, to answer the original question. How does the MC 370-2 stack up against Swiftech's MC 2000 and MC 1000. Well, I believe it stacks up very well considering it has a lot less heatsink area to work with. The MC 370-2 did allow us to go the extra step in our overclocking quest. The big question that remains, is it all worth the $85.00 premium that Swiftech charges for these babies? I think this is a matter of opinion and it will vary from individual to individual. Consider the fact that Alpha based passive cooling solutions would set you back about $50.00, it seems an extra $35.00 for a heavy duty TEC that comes with the MC 370 is not that bad of a deal. Would I personally purchase one? Yes, I would. Keep in mind that the MC 370 is not only for Celeron processors, but it can also be used for the new socketed Intel Pentium III Coppermines. Unfortunately, we didn't have a Coppermine in our test labs for this review. The MC 370 delivers what it promises as long as you take the extra effort to prepare your system for the installation. As far as I'm concerned this is top notch product that deserves your consideration.

Gamers Depot maakt ons vandaag blij met een review van de bekende Aureal Vortex II SQ2500 soundkaart. Hieronder een plakkie:

The SQ2500 has 4 1/4" plugs on the back for front and rear speakers, a mic, and line inputs. These are complimented by your standard game/midi port, and a Coaxial S/PDIF output which lets you hook up to digitally equipped speakers for a pure digital signal.

The installation was a snap, and even after installing the drivers we didn't have to reboot. While there currently isn't support for Windows NT or Linux, the Windows 98 drivers ran rock solid. The drivers give you an array of tools including a handy 10-band EQ which lets you customize the sound from any source.

We tested the SQ2500 with various speaker sets, including our "Reference" Klipsch v.204 speakers. From any source, the SQ2500 gave us great sound with incredible clarity, and no apparent signal loss. Everything was just fine until we fired up some midi files. The midi was so bad it didn't sound much better than FM Synthesis, which will definitely keep this card out of the hands of home musicians.

Under games that support A3D, namely 2.0, your ears will be in for quite a treat. Using precise 3D audio like obtrusions, sounds will appear to sound like they should in real life. If you have an enemy walking behind a wall to you left-rear, then that's precisely where he's placed in the game. This can be a freaky experience for those not familiar with 3D sound this precise.

Over all we were very impressed with how well A3D 2.0 executed and are only disappointed that more games don't support this technology. Aureal has also made the SQ2500 compatible with EAX 1.0, so you're not totally left in the cold if you play titles that support EAX.

Het volk van Thresh's FiringSquad heeft een artikel online gezet met wat overclocking resultaten van een Intel P3-600 FC-PGA engineering sample. Omdat deze samples geen multiplier lock hebben draaide de processor stabiel op 750MHz (7.5 x 100MHz). Uit de benchmark resultaten blijkt dat hij daarmee ietsie sneller is dan een Athlon 750. Hieronder een stukkie:

Our overclocked processor put up impressive numbers, but the overclocking success rate is still a question. Only one processor out of our three was able to reach 750MHz. Of course, our results are in no way indicative of what to expect from all P3-600 FC-PGA overclocking. We only tested a very small sample of non-producion processors.

The 600MHz Pentium 3 processors are still on the expensive side with prices hovering near $430, but the 600E might be the best Coppermine P3 processor for overclocking. The 500E's 5X multiplier will require extremely high FSB speeds in order to overclock to a decent 650MHz+ level. The 600E's 6X multiplier will fit in perfectly with the popular 124MHz FSB for a nice 744MHz overclocked speed.

The future looks bright for Pentium III overclocking. As chip yields improve we can expect to see higher attainable overclocked speeds especially now that we don't have to worry about any discrete L2 cache chips holding us back.

Intel gaat een surfplank bouwen die volledig zal draaien op non-Microsoft software. Het apparaat wordt aangekacheld door een Celeron processor, met Linux als operating system en Mozilla als webbrowser (getipt door Arjen):

Het nieuwe apparaat van Intel komt vanaf deze zomer in verschillende varianten op de markt. De prijzen variëren in de VS tussen de 300 en 700 dollar. Volgens Intel moet haar webcomputer niet worden gezien als een potentiële vervanger van PC's, maar meer als een uitgebreide telefoon. De fabrikant richt zich dan ook met name op de huishoudens die nog geen computer hebben. Liefhebbers van nieuwe snufjes zijn echter ook een doelgroep.

De Digital Stad heeft bekend gemaakt dat het commercieel gaat. De huidige stichting zal opgesplitst worden in 3 vennootschappen (thanks P. van der Ven voor de tip):

AMSTERDAM (ANP) - De ideële internetprovider De Digitale Stad (DDS) gaat commercieel. Het bestuur en management van DDS nemen het bedrijf in februari over van de stichting die nu De Stad beheert. Dat maakte DDS woensdag bekend. Hoeveel geld er met de overdracht is gemoeid, wilde een woordvoerster niet zeggen.

De Stad wordt straks opgedeeld in drie vennootschappen. Bewoners kunnen in een van de onderdelen, De Digitale Stad City, een belang van 5 procent krijgen. Volgens DDS kan het bedrijf niet meer op de oude manier funcioneren. ,,De wijzigingen zijn ingegeven door de snelle ontwikkelingen op internetgebied'', aldus DDS. ,,De onderneming kan straks duurzaan concurreren.''

Volgens DDS zullen klanten de wijziging merken doordat er meer diensten komen en prijzen dalen. De nieuwe eigenaren zullen flink investeren en op zoek gaan naar samenwerkingsverbanden. De commerciële activiteiten hebben volgens DDS altijd de basis gevormd voor de financiering van activiteiten. ,,Met de omzetting hoopt DDS haar commerciële basis te versterken.''

De Digitale Stad is zes jaar geleden opgezet door een klein groepje mensen uit de computerkrakerswereld, dat gratis toegang tot internet voor iedereen als doel had gesteld. Inmiddels heeft DDS meer dan 100.000 bewoners.

Overclockin.com heeft een Socket 7 / 370 heatsink roundup in elkaar gedraaid, met een vergelijking van de Alpha socket370 cooler en GlobalWin FEP32, CPM25603-32 en VFP32 heatsinks. Winnaar van de test is de FEP32, die zelfs de gerespecteerde Alpha cooler achter zich laat:

As far as the processor temperature goes, the heatsink doesn't seem to make much difference until you get above 100MHz, with the VFP32 outperforming the CPM32, and the FEP32 beating out the Alpha. Unfortunately, the BP6 doesn't have any bus settings between 110 and 124, so I couldn't take the testing any further for the bigger heatsinks. Since the slug is sanded off of this processor, it likely throws off the results as far as the cutoff temperature at which the heatsink you're using matters, but I think we can still see which heatsinks are better. For the smaller sized, thus cheaper heatsinks, the VFP appears to be the better of the two choices (not by a whole lot, but better is better). For the bigger heatsinks, the FEP clearly beats the Alpha at higher FSB's, again, I wish I could take them a little further to get a fuller effect, but that's all I can throw at it right now. The next step would be to test them out with a wattage range of Peltiers (coming soon???).

Sleeve bearing fans are usually less expensive and often quieter, but they are often less reliable. The cheapest kind of sleeve bearing simply consists of a ring made of a porous material, dipped in a lubricant. The fan motor's shaft rotates inside this ring, and is lubricated by the lubricant stored inside the porous material.

Ball bearing fans are a bit more expensive, and sometimes also louder, but they are generally more reliable. Just in case you're not familiar with bearing types: "Ball bearing" means that the rotating shaft is surrounded by tiny balls, which allow smooth rotation with hardly any wear and tear.

System Logic heeft een review gepost van de Benwin BW2000 flat panel speakers. Wat betreft hoge tonen blijkt het setje goed te presteren. De 6Watt subwoofer blijkt echter erg zwak te zijn:

The Benwin BW2000 did an impressive job in the music department but not in games because the subwoofer simply cannot deliver the punch that is needed. There is a upside to this though, if you’re a gamer who doesn’t turn sound up high, then you’ll get along great with these speakers. Music on the other hand is what these excel at, having the high frequencies down to the cent.. The 3D feature sets these apart from it’s competitors though and that sounds great too. I can tell the Benwin put a lot of research into these speakers before releasing them and they have a good first generation product on their hands. Flat panels are a revolution in audio technology and expect to see a lot more of these reviews in the future.

I discovered/realized that the changes made to the psearch code will end up requiring some changes in the statproc code as well. This is always a bit of a hassle, since there are two copies of statproc code, one for each contest. Instead of making the changes in both places, I decided to make the changes necessary to allow the two scripts I changed to work for both contests.

Unfortunately I didn't realize the RC5 statsrun was still happening.

Net result is that the ranking portion of the RC5 code is now re- running. Unfortunately, I lost yesterday's overall email ranking in the process, so everyone will show up as having moved 0 places overall in tommorow's stats. The ranking will be back to normal tomorrow.

Until I get these changes finished, the participant search function may stop working for a short time after the rc5 statsrun (it will only stop working for rc5 folks). CSC *should* be ok.

The good news is that I am working on (and making progress on) allowing Nugget, Bruce, and myself to have small-scale copies of the stats database that we can tinker with. This should help eliminate some of these problems that we've been having as of late.

Gaming mode is really the only playable option for myself, as the ISP I use has generally provided me with horrendous pings in all other modes. For users with existing 56k modems, the performance increase offered by the 3Com Internet Gaming Modem will be fairly insignificant, and hardly worth the cost (List price: $139). The bottom line is that this modem is an ideal upgrade for gamers who have older 28.8 or 33.6 modems, but for users of 56k modems, there just isn't enough of a boost.

Cool Computing deed onderzoek naar de werking van de Hibernate standby mode in Windows 2000. Uit de benchmarks blijkt dat opstarten vanuit Hibernate meer dan twee keer zo snel kan zijn als een normale startup (thanks ChUcKiE voor de tip):

Windows 98 was supposed to bring about superior power management via the Standby and Hibernate features. When the computer goes into Standby it enters into a lower-power consumption state by turning off hard drives and the monitor. A simple movement of the mouse or a tap on the keyboard should bring the computer back into full-power and operational mode. As many people discovered, however, this was far from the case in Windows 98 (and Second Edition). Often times people found their computers not being able to wake up from Standby, especially if the machine had entered Standby a second time. As for the Hibernate mode, even fewer people were able to get it to work. Only computers equipped with ACPI BIOS with hard drives formatted using FAT16 would have some sort of chance of getting Hibernate to work properly. From testing the Release-to-Manufacturing version of Windows 2000 Professional, however, it is apparent that Microsoft has made great strides in the areas of power management.

Tech Review heeft een review gebouwd rond hun naar 900MHz overgeklokte Athlon 800. De performance van deze 'Athlon 900' blijkt in alle benchmarks uitstekend te scalen t.o.v. de Athlon 750 en 800 (beide met 2/5 L2 cache divider):

How's this for a conclusion: This thing rocks! This processor has turned in some of the most impressive scores that anyone has seen out of an x86 processor, and it has needed nothing more to keep its cool than the fan/heatsink it was born with. If our suspicions are correct and AMD can more or less roll out new clock speeds at will, it's going to be a long, long year for Intel. The scores we've seen here prove not only that the chips can hit the MHz numbers, but the design of the core has the legs to hit the performance numbers. Can you imagine what it's going to be like when AMD starts making these things with on-die L2 cache running at full core speed? Umm, yeah, like I said--a long, long year for Intel. I can't wait.

Na een lange periode van stilte is er eindelijk weer nieuws van het Celeron front. De Celeron 533 werd gisteren door Intel gereleased, voor een prijs van 167 dollar per 1000. Hier wat blij geblaat uit de press release:

No. 1 computer chip maker Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) said on Tuesday that it has introduced the fastest version yet of its Celeron family, a 533 megahertz processor, for PCs costing less than $1,000.

The Intel Celeron processor running at a clock speed of 533 megahertz is priced at $167 in 1,000-unit quantities, it said. Processors are available today in systems from major PC manufacturers and individually from Intel product dealers and resellers.

Previously, the fastest Celeron processor was the 500 megahertz version. Intel said it plans to remain aggressive in the low-cost segment of the PC market, where it has regained share from rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD - news).

Zoiets gebruikte ik ook om m'n slot-1 Celeron te koelen met koude buitenlucht (alleen dat dingetje van mij was gemaakt van karton, zag er niet zo mooi uit ).

Zoals je ziet lijkt het sprekend op een Socket 370, alleen heeft Socket A 462 pinnetjes. Socket A zal gebruikt worden voor de AMD Spitfire, die in de eerste helft van dit jaar uit moet komen.
