Ping times in Quake III Arena averaged 50-100ms better in gaming mode than standard mode, which is not bad, but also not incredible. Gaming mode is really the only playable option for myself, as the ISP I use has generally provided me with horrendous pings in all other modes. For users with existing 56k modems, the performance increase offered by the 3Com Internet Gaming Modem will be fairly insignificant, and hardly worth the cost (List price: $139). The bottom line is that this modem is an ideal upgrade for gamers who have older 28.8 or 33.6 modems, but for users of 56k modems, there just isn't enough of a boost.
