Don't be prepared to sit down and upgrade to Windows 2000 in a few minutes, it's a long process, usually taking at least 45 minutes to an hour. As of yet, we've had hardly any problems upgrading current work machines to Windows 2000, but there are some bumps in the road that need to be addressed before you take the plunge and install this massive OS. First off, have a lot of free hard drive space before you upgrade, Microsoft states 650 MB minimum to be available, we recommend at least 1 GB. Windows 2000 IS a space hog, no doubt about it, but with 20 and 30GB hard drives being standard nowadays, it doesn't seem that out of the question. The actual Windows 2000 CD is a bootable CD via your motherboard's BIOS, meaning you can install the OS without already having an OS on your computer (just like Windows NT and Win98SE). After running through a few questions, the installation will allow to either upgrade your current OS (Win95/98/NT to Windows2000), or to install a clean copy of the OS. Installing a clean copy is the best way to go for most users, especially those who are worried about their programs or hardware not working. You can install a clean copy, which will automatically setup a dual-boot system, allowing you to test out hardware in Win2000, and if there are a lot of problems, you can quickly boot back into Windows 98 and download drivers/repair system files, etc

RgR kwam een linkje afgeven naar Camex, een nieuwe 0909-dialup internetprovider die vanaf 1 maart zal beginnen met haar service in Nederland en België. Net als Superweb betaal je er dus geen directe telefoonkosten, wel 23 Euro per maand abo en 0,25 Eurocent inbelkosten per sessie. Camex maakt gebruik van een directe satelliet verbinding met de Internet backbone in Amerika en de UUNet backbone in Nederland. Check voor meer info www.camex.nl.

Het abonnement
Met het 0909-dialup account kunt u onbeperkt surfen op het Internet. U krijgt de beschikking over een POP3 account met max. 3 e-mail aliassen. Wij hebben onze eigen nieuwsserver die u mag gebruiken. Er worden geen poorten geblokkeerd, waardoor u ook gebruik kan maken van bijvoorbeeld ICQ en IRC.

De beperkingen
Het 0909-dialup abonnement kent een aantal beperkingen. Zo hanteren wij een maximum online tijd van 4 uur per sessie. Na deze 4 uur wordt de verbinding verbroken. U kunt overigens direct opnieuw inbellen. Dit is om te voorkomen dat mensen denken via ons een gratis huurlijn met het Internet te kunnen krijgen. Het 0909-dialup abonnement is alleen voor partikulieren en niet voor bedrijven.

De kosten
Het 0909-dialup abonnement kost Euro 23,- per maand. Dit bedrag wordt maandelijks automatisch van uw bankrekening afgeschreven. U betaalt éénmalig een setupfee van Euro 35,-
Daarnaast betaalt u per login +/- Euro 0,25 aan uw telecom operator.

Bereikbaarheid en Snelheid
Wij doen er alles aan om de capaciteit van onze inbelpunten op niveau te houden. U krijgt van ons de garantie dat wij niet meer gebruikers zullen aansluiten dan nodig is. Ook is de snelheid van ons netwerk gelijk aan het netwerk van betere providers.

Bij Voodoo Extreme lees ik dat er nieuwe drivers zijn gereleased voor Savage4 based videokaarten. Windows 95 gebruikers kunnen versie 8.10.33 hier neerhalen, Windows 98 gebruikers moeten hier zijn.

Daarnaast heeft ook Guillemot nieuwe drivers in elkaar geklust. Er zijn nieuwe drivers beschikbaar voor zowel de 3D Prophet SDR en DDR versie. De soep is gebaseerd op nVidia's detonator 3.72 drivers.

Bij iXBT-Hardware wordt gemeld dat 3dfx op de CeBit beurs (ergens later deze maand) samples van haar Voodoo4 en 5 zal gaan showen. Het is echter wel alleen voor distribiteurs bedoeld .

According to our sources 3dfx will demonstrate samples of the cards from Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 product lines at CeBIT show. But they are going to do it privately only for main distributors. And even this fact means that they meet the schedule.

ZDNet Nederland meldt in dit bericht dat alle 350.000 Ford-arbeiders in de komende 12 maanden een PC met printer en internetaanlsuiting mee naar huis kunnen krijgen. Hewlett-Packard zal de PC's gaan leveren, UUNet neemt de internet kant voor zijn rekening. Internettende Mondeo verkopers zullen na het inloggen op het WWW wel eerst begroet worden door een advertentie schermpie:

Hoewel het onduidelijk is wat voor een toestel er in België en Nederland verdeeld wordt, zullen de 100.000 werknemers in de VS uitgerust worden met een Hewlett-Packard Pavilion PC met een 500-MHz Pentium III, 64 MB geheugen, een harde schijf van 4,3 GB en een 15-inch scherm. Mits het betalen van een alsnog onbekend bedrag zullen de arbeiders en bedienden de kans krijgen om het systeem te upgraden. De overeenkomst zou voor een periode van drie jaar zijn, zolang de gebruiker werknemer bij Ford blijft natuurlijk. Omdat voor de toestellen in de VS een nominaal bedrag van vijf dollar wordt betaald, worden de computers niet voor privé-gebruik beschouwd en zal het autobedrijf de computers kunnen aanrekenen. Over hoe de fiscale regeling in België zal verlopen, zal pas later in het jaar bekend zijn.

Toevallig, naast Ultimate Chaos heeft Dan's Data vandaag ook een P3 Coppermine overclocking artikel online geplant. Net als het volk van Ultimate Chaos bereikte Dan trouwens ook 700MHz, alleen had hij er maar een P3-500E nodig. Het artikel is vrij lang geworden vanwege de zeer uitgebreide uitleg. It's important to bear in mind that the Coppermine P-III 500E at 700MHz is, as I mention in the slotket review, not only faster than processors with a list price more than twice the $AUD500 or so the 500E will set you back, but faster than any Intel processor you can probably currently buy. Stocks of faster P-IIIs are notoriously short, and the highest speed models, announced by Intel to compete with AMD's well-and-truly-available top spec Athlons, just don't presently exist outside of marketing people's fantasies.

Is a 500E at 700MHz the fastest PC CPU you can buy these days? Nope; you can overclock Athlons, too, and they're faster at the same clock speed than P-IIIs. They're not much more expensive, either. But Athlon overclocking requires extra hardware and the courage to crack their case open, while P-III overclocking just requires a board like the BF6. It doesn't even look as if you need an after-market heatsink.

If you're after more CPU speed on the cheap, a 500E, a slotket and a BF6 make an attractive package. The P-III 550E is also available at the moment, though harder to find than the 500E; it sells for about $AUD600, and its 5.5 multiplier helps keep FSB speeds a bit more reasonable.

We hear rumours that ATI's Rage Fury MAXX can give it a good run for its money, since ATI haven't sent us a card we can't attest to this. However like it or not, agree with it or hate it, The 'Guillemot GeForce Prophet-SDR' is the single most impressive card we have seen to date. With S3's Savage2000 and 3dfx's VooDoo4/5 coming along, it'll certainly be interesting to see who wins out.

For now, Guillemots card remains the best we have seen when it comes to cost and performance on an equal scale. However there is one drawback, owners of Athlon Boards may come across problems, from games hanging in mid play too the 3D Speed being very slow (still faster than TNT2-Ultra). This is due to a bug in the AMD AGP bus that can only be truly fixed by disabling AGP transfers. It happens the worst on VIA boards like the Asus K7M but still occurs on most others.

Ultimate Chaos heeft een artikel geschreven over zijn overclocking ervaringen met de Intel Pentium III 550E processor. De CPU was in combinatie met een Abit BE6-2 en een IWill Slocket II converter goed voor 704MHz (default voltage en cooling). Leuk aan dit artikel is dat het hele overklokproces met plaatjes geïllustreerd is.

Yep, five beers. This CPU is just awesome. With a better heatsink/fan, 732MHz is a sure bet. 700MHz out of a 550MHz chip, at DEFAULT voltage? Awesome. For the money, this is definitely the CPU to have.

I'll have to live with "only" 700MHz until my new 30mm Alpha PAL-6030 arrives from Millisec. I chose the 30mm version over the 35mm because it won't interfere with ALL the DIMM slots on the BE6-II.

I didn't do any formal testing, but this is one smokin-fast rig. At 700MHz, and with my Voodoo3 3000 clocked at 185MHz, there isn't a single game that doesn't run liquid-smooth. I can't wait to strap on that Alpha and see what this machine can do.

WebWereld meldt dat IBM bezig is met het ontwerpen van 4,5GHz chips. Deze snelheid zou kunnen worden bereikt door middel van "distributed clock function", een technologie waarmee circuits binnen een chip op verschillende kloksnelheden kunnen werken, afzonderlijk van de rekenkracht die benodigd is. Het verschil met de bestaande processors is dat er nu helft minder energie nodig is om tot dezelfde prestaties te komen. Check WebWereld voor meer info.

Het nieuwe ontwerp zal deze week gepresenteerd worden op de International Solid-State Circuits Conference. Het duurt nog even voordat een 4,5 GHz-chip op de markt komt. In eerste instantie moet men het doen met een 1 GHz-variant.

De serie chips waaraan gewerkt wordt, maakt gebruik van conventionele silicium-transistoren, zo meldt persbureau Reuters. Het verschil met bestaande chips – zoals de Intel Pentium III en AMD Athlon – is dat er vijftig procent minder energie nodig is om tot dezelfde prestaties te komen.

IBM maakt hiertoe gebruik van een technologie genaamd distributed clock function. Verschillende circuits binnen een chip kunnen hiermee draaien op verschillende kloksnelheden, afhankelijk van de benodigde rekenkracht. Dit zou veel energie besparen en bovendien grotere snelheden tot gevolg hebben.

De nieuwe processors zijn volgens Reuters vooral bedoeld voor webservers. Binnen een jaar is de 1 GHz-variant te koop. Op een chip met 4,5 GHz moet iets langer worden gewacht; deze ligt over een jaar of vier in de winkel, stelt IBM.

The Tech Zone brengt ons een review van het Monsoon MM-700 flat panel speakersetje. In vergelijking met zijn kleine broer, de MH-500, blijkt deze set erg goed geluid te produceren:

I tested the Monsoon MM-700 at The Tech Zone LAN party using games like Quake 3, some music CDs plus a few MP3s as well. The sound card used was a Sound Blaster Live! Since I still had the Monsoon MH-500 kicking around, I ran them side by side to see what an extra $25 buys you.

The first thing you notice when listening to the MM-700 and MH-500 is the base response. The MM-700 has a lot more and can get louder. No doubt because its sub woofer is bigger. What I didn't expect however was the openness of the MM-700 over the MH-500. Music tracks sound very lively and spacious with good open air and a very deep sound stage. It was quite a bit better than the MH-500.

I used several musical selections, ranging from classical to dance and also made use of various 3D hardware accelerated games such as Unreal Tournament and Quake2. Immediately, I was aware that the high frequencies, particularly in the 10KHz-20KHz range were completely missing. Quickly switching back to the 48’s, I verified that tweeters do indeed make the satellites sound more "airy" and lifelike. Not much actually happens in that range though, so don’t think that lack of extreme highs knocks this contender out.

The 45.2’s have what many, but not all, speakers have—a "fun" frequency response. A fun frequency response is one that deliberately deviates from flat in order to emphasize particular aspects relating to their intended application. If executed properly, this curve mangling can give the user a feeling of closeness or excitement when using the product. What is to be avoided at all costs, is a sound that provokes the listener to turn them off. Headaches after several hours of listening usually indicate problems. The Altec’s had no such problems, even after 3 hours of stupidly high level listening.

Het volk achter Overclockin.com heeft een review van de Trinity Micro Northwind online gebracht. De Northwind is een verbeterde revisie van Trinity Micro's Athlon Gold Finger Device en heeft niet langer een ranzig met de hand gesoldeerd printplaatje. Verder doet het apparaatje nog steeds wat een GFD moet doen: multiplier en voltage settings tweaken:

The Northwind GFD from Trinity Micro worked like a charm. I had no problems cranking this processor up to its maximum speed, 750MHz. To start off, I set the card for the default speed and voltage of the processor (500MHz and 1.6V), popped the power cable into the connector, plugged the card onto the connector on the processor, and fired up the system. No problem. I then tried every setting up to 750MHz and again had no problems. The processor was recognized properly each time. I also played around with the voltage settings and they worked properly as well. There was no need to use them with this processor because it is stable at 750MHz at 1.6V, but I did need to make sure that the voltage changed properly.

In navolging van SlotA.com en Tom's Hardware Guide heeft ook AnandTech een review van de KX133 chipset gepubliceerd. In tegenstelling tot Tom heeft Anand wel vergelijkende benchmarks van de AMD 750 chipset met SuperBypass enabled. De KX133 blijkt in alle benchmarks sneller te zijn dan de AMD 750 zonder SuperBypass. Met SuperBypass enabled zijn de resultaten wisselend, soms in het voordeel van de AMD 750 en soms in het voordeel van de KX133. Het is in ieder geval duidelijk dat het zwaar overhypete AGP4X bij de game benchmarks totaal niet boeit, een conclusie die we trouwens ook al uit eerdere i820 vs 440BX benchmarks konden trekken:

The performance of the KX133 isn’t noticeably slower than the AMD 750 either, and for a user looking to build a new Athlon system, going with the KX133 chipset will open them up to a variety of motherboards that wouldn’t be options if they were opting for a board based on the AMD 750 chipset. The true test will have to be when other manufacturers begin shipping their KX133 boards. It will be interesting to see if, with a few BIOS tweaks, the performance of the KX133 can be improved.

The AGP 4X support of the KX133 isn’t a big deal, it’s mainly a marketing ploy. From our tests, the difference between AGP 4X and AGP 2X is negligible. The biggest performance benefit of the KX133 is its PC133 SDRAM support which can come in handy for applications that are very dependent on memory transfers (such as professional level applications, image editing software, voice recognition, etc…).

JC, bekend van het informatieve JC's News'n'Links, heeft een interessante posting geplaatst in een Slashdot thread over de Intel Northwood (waarvan inmiddels bekend is dat het de codenaam is voor mobile Willamette):

The Willamette is Intel's first new core since the P6 back in the mid 90s, which found itself inside the Pentium Pro, II, III, and Celeron. Rumours and admissions declare the below to be its likely improvements:

A deeper (or smoother, at least) instruction pipeline for stronger frequency ramping

Added execution pipelines and functional units (eg, allowing it to issue more instructions per cycle)

A "trace cache", to optimize the order in which instructions are fed into the pipelines (I admit, I could be screwing up this particular explanation) variable frequency units -- this one's a leap of faith, but tentatively according to some sources, different parts of the cpu will be clocked at different rates. A 2GHz Willamette chip might have a 2GHz integer unit, a 1.7GHz fpu, and a 1.5GHz SSE unit (mind you, this is a speculative example, with numbers picked out of the air)

An improved motherboard bus, capable of 200MT/s (100MHz, double pumped) but also 128-bit, twice the width of the Athlon's EV-6, allowing for twice the peak bandwidth. Also, quadruple pumped (400MT/s) for the later server version, codenamed Foster. On the other hand, it will still be a shared bus, which is supposedly less "clean" than a point to point protocol that the Athlon uses, meaning that high-way SMP may get lots of collisions and degraded performance on Willamette.

Het was al bekend dat Willamette gebruik zou maken van een 'trace cache' en een 128-bit double data rate bus. Dat gedeelte over variabele frequency units is nieuw voor mij, klinkt erg interessant.

Deze posting op SiliconInvestor.com suggereert dat de X-Box (game console van Microsoft) gebruik maak van de VIA Apollo KX133 chipset. Het gaat hier om pure speculatie, maar aangezien we over de X-Box überhaupt nog niets concreets hebben gehoord kunnen deze geruchten er ook nog wel tussen:

A: Interesting comment. You may remember that Chris Tom from slota.com had this to say about the kx133 he tested:

"also, the first board i recieved was damaged, and would not display video, it came all the way from taiwan so that can be expected. i recieved this board yesterday, and thankfully it worked, with so far one problem that i was able to work around. that explains why you don't see more tests. i was slated to get a replacement sooner, but microsoft grabbed all of the boards they had up. via has been very helpful"

Also, I listened to the Activision conf. call yesterday and while the company is under a NDA, they were able to confirm they are developing for the X-Box.

Via VE fietste ik tegen dit linkje naar DVD Genie, een proggie waarmee je de regio code's en een aantal ongedocumenteerde features in o.a. Software Cinemaster, PowerDVD en WinDVD kunt tweaken. Check de description:

DVD Genie allows you to modify the region code for popular software-based DVD Players such as Software Cinemaster, PowerDVD and WinDVD (among a few). It also allows you to tweak these programs with undocumented features to better fit your system.

DVD Genie will also allow you to select which program runs when a DVD Disc is inserted into the drive and contains support for fullscreen Zooming on widescreen movies with certain players.

The Register schrijft in een (zoals gewoonlijk) vaag artikeltje dat de Intel Willamette op 1 oktober geïntroduceerd zal worden. Willamette zal vergezeld worden van de Tahama chipset. Volgens onze vrienden van het Register heeft deze een geheugen bandwidth van 3,2Gb/s heeft, wat mij doet denken aan dual Rambus. Eerder schreef ZDNet al dat Willamette Rambus support heeft. Dit is enigzins opvallend aangezien Intel de laatste tijd meer richting het DDR kamp leek te trekken. De release date van 1 oktober lijkt me in ieder geval realistisch:

What do we actually know about Willamette so far? Well, piecing together the jigsaw puzzle, we have the following: The chipset supporting it, Tahama, will include some screaming Sindie like additional instructions called Willamette New Instructions. Screaming Sindie will include 64-bit FPU instructions, but Willamette itself will support 128-bit MMX instructions.

Tahama will support AGP 4X, and include 3.2GBps memory bus bandwidth and 3.2GBps system bus bandwidth. Initially, it will have 256K of on chip cache, but our information is this will rapidly rise.

It may debut at 1.0GHz, it could be 1.2GHz or 1.4GHz, but at any rate its slated launch date is 1 October this year.

Joepie (ahum), ik ontving de Cursor, je weet wel, e-zine van het jaar (bij deze nog gefeliciteerd ) en daarin konden we weer het laatste nieuws lezen, ook stond erin dat de EU eindelijk het ermee eens is dat er een EU domein moet komen, naja je leest het hieronder:
