Ups & Downs of Upgrading

There are a number of ways to save yourself headaches during an upgrade process. Over the 18 years of computer buying and upgrading I've done, I've learned a number of things about this process I'd like to share with you. The "wisdom" in this article applies to building a computer from scratch as well, so if you are going to be building one for yourself, or for friends and family, you definitely want to read this.

Note: This article does not apply to you if you are Bill Gates, Steve Forbes, or an NFL player. This article is about upgrading your computer for a reasonable price and getting maximum value for each dollar you put in. It's better to have a machine that is constantly playable for all games that come out for a reasonable cost, rather than have one that is great for a short while but costs you so much money that you are stuck with the same hardware for the next two years. One other side benefit of this is that, overall, it will leave you with more money to buy games, as well as leaving you with a computer you can play them on. This is kind of a maintenance program for your computer. You probably don't go out and buy a new car every year, so why should you buy a new computer that often? With regular "maintenance," just like your car, your computer can serve you well for quite a long while... without costing you an arm and a leg.

I-Storm harddrive cooler review

nter the I-Storm, a hard drive cooling device which attaches to the front of a hard drive, and mounts at the front of your case in a standard 5.25" drive bay. I-Storm uses a cylindrical fan (similar to the blower devices used in central air and heating systems) to pull air into the case and blow it over your hard drive. The I-Storm uses a standard power supply Y-adapter which connects to one of your power supply's drive connectors, without requiring one of its own (i.e.- unplug the power connector from a drive, plug the connector into one end of the I-Storm adapter, then plug the other end of the I-storm adapter back into the drive).

Nieuwe BX6 BIOS

Filename: BX6HV.EXE

Date: 01/25/1999

ID: HV

NOTE:

Fixes the NEC ATAPI ZIP drive incompatibility problem.

Supports the Intel Pentium III 450 and 500 Mhz (Katmai) CPU.

Supports the Intel Celeron 366 Mhz up to 400 Mhz compliance.

Supports up to an 8x clock multiplier.

Solves the problem of Windows98 not being able to shut-down properly when the ACPI function is enabled.

Supports DMI 2.3 . You have to input the parameter "/CD" to Clear DMI pool data while updating the BIOS. (e.g. A:\AWDFLASH NEWBIOS /PY /SN /CC /CD)

EXTRA NOTE:

For Pentium III (Katmai) users, the BIOS will indicate PII EVEN if it is a PIII because the code was finished just prior to the unveiling of the new PIII name for the Katmai. This will be corrected in the next BIOS.

Je kunt 'm hier pakken.

Simcity 3000 review

Another new feature to SC3K is the neighbor system. By connecting yourself to bordering cities you will be able to set up deals with them. For example, if your citizens are drowning in a sea of their own garbage, you can strike up a deal with the mayor next door and have them take away all your garbage... for a price, of course. On the other hand, a city with large amounts of reserve water can sell that excess to another city for a nice monthly fee. Aside from deals by your neighbors, you'll also be asked to build casinos, prisons, shopping malls, and more by people offering you monthly fees for your land.

PC Nut just received a batch of C300a's and he reports they are testing OK at 450, so if you're still looking give Humphrey a call. The supply of good ones is rapidly disappearing so act now - In my view buying a pre-tested chip is the only way to go. According to PC Nut "Slot one version of C300As has been discontinued, and one supplier just changed the flags on socket 370 version of C300As from Active to Phase Out as well, so it looks like Intel is taking both versions out of their Celeron lineup. There are plenty of OEM C300As in the channels right now (too many in fact), but we had real bad luck with OEM chips lately, so we are sticking with retail C300As if possible."

The systems run Intel Pentium lucrative static random access memory (SRAM) L2 cache market is about to become a memory. The market watchers predict discrete L2 cache will be almost completely phased out, at least on the desktop, by 2002.

L2 cache is memory installed logically between a processor and a machine's main RAM. The cache chip is used to hold recently used data, making repetitive operations faster than if the processor had to go into main RAM and search for the same data bits over and over. But L2-equivalent cache is increasingly being engineered onto the processors themselves, making external cache unnecessary.

The Semico study, titled "SRAM: Soon Cache Will Be Just An Embedded Memory," predicts that merchant market revenues will decline nearly $1.5 billion by 2002, while units shipped will decline at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -15 percent during the period 1997 through 2003. All in all, says the market research firm, the SRAM cache market is becoming a difficult place to live and it won't get any easier.

The researchers attribute the erosion of demand for discrete SRAM to embedded SRAM in L2 cache and other applications. Non-commodity parts for specialized chips will still offer profits to SRAM makers that have sufficiently advanced technology, says the firm, citing double data rate (DDR) chips, late-write SRAMs and copper interconnects as innovations that will help SRAM meet the speed-demon requirements of high-end networks and workstations.

Still, the erosion of the commodity SRAM market will not reverse itself, predicts Semico. The firm says total megabits shipped will decline 25 percent, CAGR, between now and 2003, even while the cost-per-megabit decreases from $3.15 to $0.68 by the end of the same six-year time frame. In terms of units, the picture is just as bleak for SRAM cache makers. Units shipped will drop by about 240 million units and revenues will fall approximately $1.6 billion during the entire forecast period, predicts the firm.

The researchers give a roadmap for L2 cache market erosion. Desktop and notebook computers will see L2 cache integrated first, say the researchers, and discrete SRAM consumption for those machines will nosedive from $2 billion this year to only $15 million in 2002. On the other hand, servers and workstations will still use discrete SRAM through 2003, says the firm, since it will take more time to integrate L2 cache in the high densities such computers need.

Looking ahead, from 2001 to 2003, revenues will come mainly from 4 megabyte (MB), 8 Mb and 16 Mb parts, boosted a bit by the introduction of 32 Mb parts toward the end of the forecast period.

Lycos krijgt MP3 database

Riding the grassroots popularity of online music, Web portal Lycos and Norwegian download site FAST today launched a new resource for downloads using controversial MP3 technology.

The service, called MP3 Search, allows users to search databases of MP3 audio files. It will be featured on the Lycos site and use FAST technology to search the Web for music files.

[...]The advent of an MP3 offering on a Web portal is not surprising given the high volume of music download queries most search engines receive. MP3 proponents say the term "MP3" is one of the most popular terms that surfers search for.

The format's exploding popularity has not pleased everyone, however. The RIAA, the music industry's lobbying arm, views the technology as promoting pirated music. The organization has taken several measures to curb the use of MP3 and other technologies that it says encourage distribution of music that is in violation of copyright laws.

Speaking at the World Economics Forum at Davos, Switzerland, Gates said anyone buying Microsoft shares at 60-70 times annual earnings, typically the multiple at which the company's stock trades, were taking a very long-term risk, today's Times reported.

"Statistically our chances of still being one of the top 25 companies in America 25 years from now are not very high," Gates went on to say. "I certainly hope we will still be there, but that will take at least three or four miracles."

That's remarkably similar to the line trotted out by Microsoft VP Nathan Myrvold, speaking a few weeks ago on BBC Radio 4's In Business programme. While his statement that the successor to Windows would emerge within the next five years raised no eyebrows, what he said after did:

"In the next five years the successor to Windows will come about... something may already exist. Maybe it's Linux, maybe it's Netscape Navigator -- they've had a plan to turn that into an operating system -- maybe its the Java operating system. We, of course, at Microsoft hope we're behind [the successor to Windows]. But if we don't work very hard, someone else will be."

So, first we get Myrvold suggesting that the world's biggest software company, whose OS runs on over 80 per cent of the world's personal computers, might just miss the ball over the next five years. Then we get his boss, saying the company's long term survival will take "miracles".

Not quite the bullish language we've come to expect from Redmond, but one that very clearly de-emphasises Microsoft's role as industry dominator and suggests the company might just end up the underdog -- 'Hey, guys, we're really fallible, you know.' That's always been a possibility (albeit a slim one) in an industry as swiftly moving as the IT business, but it is telling that Microsoft's senior executives are choosing to point it out.

Windows 2000 might be delayed a bit, but that's hardly likely to hit Microsoft too hard. Linux may nab a lot of server OS market share, but it's unlikely to make it too big in the personal computer space. Or perhaps Gates and co. are more concerned about Apple's revival continuing to the point where everyone's using a Mac?

Ever hanker for some more tweaking that your BIOS allows? Well, I've been hearing a few good reports of a couple of interesting programs that allow to to change your FSB speed from within Windows. I've heard a few reports that this will allow people to run at say 124Mhz, when normally their hard drives can't handle this boot process! The solution - whack up your FSB after boot. Does'nt help for me but I thought I'd pass it on...

The second toy allows you to change your Level 2 cache latency. Apparently some people managed to get their SL2W8's running at 504 by moving the latency up to around 8. The loss of performance is outweighed by the gain from 450Mhz to 504Mhz.

I've tried both and they don't seem to do a lot of good, but no harm either so they may be worth a trip. The readme's seem to be in Japanese, but they are pretty easy to work :) You can go to the Home Page of these apps. here!

For each slocket, we covered the test system with a plastic bag, and ran it overclocked for 2 hours in a room at 24 degrees C, looping through Winstone 99 and the Quake II crusher demo. The CPU temperature on each converter card rose to 48.5 degrees C at 2.10v, but there were no freezes, errors, or other such anomalies. From our testing, it seems as if the socket-to-slot converters are the real deal - no performance hit, no added instabilities, and no detriment to overclocking.

found the Diamond Sonic Impact to have sharper and crisper sound as compared to the Ensoniq AudioPCI and Yamaha OP3L-SAx sound cards that I tested.  The A3D makes a huge difference when playing such games as Unreal or Jedi Knight - Dark Forces II that utilize its technology.  3D gaming is a whole new experience with the positional 3D audio that drags you into the surrealism of the game.

One problem that I incurred while testing the card is how much raw CPU power the A3D needed while playing Unreal.  The K6-233 didn't have enough horsepower to maintain both the video and sound which made the sound quite choppy.  When I put the card into a Celeron 450A system, everything was smooth and much more playable.

Creative DVD Encore 5x review

We're dawning on a new age of audio and video technology. Everyone knew at some point the VCR would be replaced, and everyone knew the CD-ROM would be replaced, but by what? The answer is DVD. Digital Versatile Disc allows immense amounts of information to be stored on one 5.25" disc, which resembles a CD but in fact is much much more. When CD's were first introduced to the computer world, they were great because they could hold incredible amounts of data and were easy to store. Nowadays it just isn't the same, simply because software is becoming much larger and many titles are being shipped with more than one CD. DVD, with its storage capacity of 8.5 GB (generation 2) per side of a disc has opened up new doors for the computing and the home entertainment world. Not only can computers take advantage of this new opportunity, home theaters can too. DVD discs can hold entire movies on each side, with incredible digital sound and many extra features. The DVD titles which you will find in stores now often have extra movie clips, trailers, cut scenes, as well as a widescreen version on one side and a standard "modified for your TV" version on the other. The greatest thing about this new technology is with just one DVD drive in your computer and a decoder card, you can take advantage of both applications of a DVD disc, computer data and movies. Creative Labs does an excellent job of making this happen with their new PC-DVD Encore 5x kit.

S3 Savage4 PR

Door Femme Taken, 1 februari 1999 19:560 reacties, bron: AGNhardware

S3 heeft nu officeel de nieuwe Savage4 videochip aangekondigd. Hier wat stuff uit de press release:

Spanning all volume mainstream PC price segments, Savage4 comes in two configurations: the Savage4 PRO and the Savage4 GT. Targeted for mid-range volume PC markets, the Savage4 PRO offers industry-first AGP 4X technology, 143MHz memory support and up to a 32MB local frame buffer, while the Savage4 GT offers AGP 2X technology, 125MHz memory support and up to a 16MB local frame buffer for low-end PC markets.

Based on its feature set, expected performance level and price point, S3 believes that the Savage4 accelerator is the mainstream graphics platform to beat in 1999.

"Savage4 takes S3 back to what it does best -- high-end performance and features at competitive price points and the stability that volume PC manufacturers require," said Jon Peddie, president, Jon Peddie Associates (Tiburon, CA.). "I expect to see Savage4 gain widespread market acceptance in 1999."

Diamond Multimedia Systems, Inc. today announced that the company plans to develop one of the PC market's first AGP 4X graphics accelerators based on S3's new Savage4 architecture.

The AGP 4X technology allows for the transfer of twice as many 3D textures versus previous generation AGP 2X implementations. Furthermore, Diamond's Savage4-based product will take advantage of S3 Texture Compression, or S3TC, for 3D graphics featuring larger, more realistic textures. Diamond's next-generation product is expected to provide uncompromised 2D and 3D graphics acceleration and digital video playback performance for the mainstream PC gaming and consumer markets at an engaging price point.

``Diamond is partnering with S3 to deliver a feature-rich graphics solution to PC consumers and OEMs,'' said Scott Vouri, vice president and general manager of core graphics at Diamond Multimedia. ``Diamond plans to capitalize on its close and long-standing relationship with S3 as a key partner to bring performance 3D graphics to the mainstream PC market.''

``Savage4's 4X AGP and S3TC will clearly give Diamond a competitive advantage in the market,'' said Rick Bergman, vice president of marketing for S3 Incorporated. ``We anticipate that Diamond will be highly successful in both the OEM and retail markets with their upcoming Savage4-based product.'' With true 32-bit 3D rendering, complete DirectX 6 support, AGP 4X technology and full optimization for Intel Pentium III and AMD K7 processors, Diamond's Savage4-based graphics accelerator is expected to provide the horsepower to enhance the performance and intensify the realism of today's mainstream and gaming applications.

WARNING: ONLY FOR SERIOUS FLIGHT SIMMERS!!!  This thing is so detailed in flight, it's not even funny.  If you want to fly an easy flight sim, go fly that other Falcon game that got boxed with a MiG game to make it look attractive.  Real physics apply in this game and all the other fun things.  Each key on the keyboard has several functions.  There are different types of multiplayer actions to get it on over LAN, Modem, or Network.  If you are a begginer, I suggest some of the training missions first, because when I got this, I ripped it open and installed it on my parents computer.   On an AMD-K6 200, let's just say it was choppy.  Play it on a high end system, and you will never goto sleep again.  Just make sure you realize it is not like any other flight sim, not even it's predecessor's.

Gigabyte GA-630 Banshee review

The GA-630 is an excellent implementation of the Voodoo Banshee. There is a heatsink and fan mounted on the Banshee processor, and a full 16Mb of 125Mhz SGRAM.

Please note, I do not recommend overclocking a Celeron 300A to 450Mhz, the potential for corrupted data is unacceptable for business use. Just because the Celeron 300A I purchased seems to be rock-solid at 450Mhz does not mean that all of them will run at 450 - and if I do not recommend overclocking the chip, people can't complain that "you said it would run at 450Mhz!".

Will there be revolts in B&W when you don't do a good job guarding your villagers against the enemy, will there become "leaders" who try to undermine your society or will people try to convince others to leave with them and if so.

Yes definately - in fact what will happen is that, um, if you and I were two god on different sides of the landscape and there was a small tribe between us that we both want on our faith - it is gonna be just as historical as it was, if you look at the primitive tribes and early religions, including Christianity, there is a lot of swapping religions when one god seems to be better than another or more impressive than another.the little people are innocent to believe that that spell you do say over there, they will think "God that's bloody impressive isnt it" and they will start converting to your faith. So if you and I were competing over a village - you might send a missionary to help them out and to be really nice to them and they will start believing in you, and then you ignore them for a while and their leader comes up and asks you for help with food and stuff and you ignore them - they will start to lose faith in you because your ignoring them - then when I come along with my skeleton army and start beating up all the people they are gonna start to think "oh maybe this god is more powerful" and they will lose more and more faith until that tribe becomes mine rather than yours!

Maxi Gamer Phoenix review

There is nothing to mention about this card that would surprise anyone. The Phoenix is a plain Banshee board that uses an orange PCB, the same coloured heatsink, and 16MBs of SGRAM. Okay, sure, the SGRAM isn’t the norm on the Banshees, but in use, the SGRAM doesn’t really give a performance boost. Luckily, the SGRAM doesn’t give a price boost either ;)

The trend of using reference designs seem to have the positive effect that a lot of cards share similar qualities, such as installation. The Phoenix was recognised by Win98’s Plug ‘n Pray, and immediately requested for the drivers. By the book, and the way I like it!

Savage4 preview

The full feature list is certainly impressive and bodes well for the newly christened Savage4. S3 have increased the maximum memory support to 32Mb which will certainly be plenty, even for ultra hardcore gamers. With the added bonus of S3TC, this could become an effective 160Mb texture memory (assuming 5:1 compression with all 32Mb used as texture storage). Of course in practice this will allow the use of much, much higher resolution texture maps which will allow unprecedented levels of detail in forthcoming games. The following shots were taken using high resolution textures running in the Unreal engine. They show off the potential of S3TC.

The MonsterSound MX300 is an excellent card with the best 3D sound on the market. It’s precise 3D steering and the possibilities of wavetracing make this $99 card worthy in any hard-core gamer’s rig. However, the lack of complete gaming support, the lukewarm MIDI and the missing wave sound effects included with Creative Lab’s card causes me to continue to support the $99 SB Live! value edition as still the best bargain and still the official sound card of the Voodoo Review. If a company comes up with great MIDI, echo and reverb perimeters and complete 3d compatibility with all games please let me know and I’ll jump on it!

But when will Willamette appear? One rumour is along the lines that Intel will bring it forward from its end of Q4 in a bid to spanner AMD's K7, while another rumour says it is delayed.

We know one thing for sure. It is a "new implementation" of the IA-32 architecture. Does the world need one of these? Does that mean it is the P7, long ago promised by Intel? Or the P8, or maybe even the P9?

Here, in my little cave in Knaresborough, Yorkshire, my crystal ball is a tad cloudy after all these years being dead, but I see in the future not just Willamette, but cheap Alphas and the shared motherboards that they will have with AMD's K7 muddying Intel's waters.

We suspect even as we gaze that AMD has a list of processors that it is showing a number of vendors about the level of production it will have by year end.

First silicon is already rolling off Dresden's Fab 30, and we know that Dell is already OEMing Alpha filers for its customers. By year-end, AMD will have copper whopper .18 micron technology well under its belt and a string of OEMs to boot, according to the tea-leaves.

Eck Pfeiffer and his mob will be pushing very fast Alpha machines as fast as they can sell'em, and who will want Willamette when it arrives, given that K7 copper whoppers will be dirt cheap by then.

Zware prijsverlaging Alpha CPU's

ast week we wrote that 21164A 533MHz Alpha CPUs cost $250 in quantity but an informed source has revealed that the price is nearer to $180 when ordered in volume.

[...]Details of Samsung's pricing for Alphas in this quarter are as follows, we can reveal. The 21164A CPU costs $250 for the 533MHz part, $684 for the 600MHz part, $1,080 for the 633MHz part, and $1,800 for the 667MHz part. The LX2 motherboard currently costs $680, the LX4 $1,000, the UX2 board $600 and a UX4 $750.

A SMB 264DP2-500 21264 with a 500MHz motheboard and a 2Mb daughtercard will cost $5,350, while a SMB 264DC2-500 21264 with 500MHz daughtercard only with 2Mb cache costs $2,643.

Our source said that the low water mark for the LX2 and 533MHz processor happened last year between April to June, when Samsung and DEC OEM had a price war. He claimed that DEC was dumping stock because of the upcoming merger with Compaq and the impending death of the Digital Semi group. Then, prices were as low as $700 for 100 piece orders.

The 800MHz processors are, however, likely to fall to below $250 when the .25 micron processor ramps up later this year, although the source said that price was by no means certain because the suppliers "charge what the market will bear".

Gamecenter '98 Awards

Door Femme Taken, 1 februari 1999 01:410 reacties, bron: Coolinfo

Gamecenter heeft z'n Awards for 1998 uitgereikt.

Choosing the best games of 1998 was both simple and difficult; at first we went hog-wild, nominating up to ten games in each category. Turns out gathering the nominees was the easy part. Then came the tough part when we had to trim each genre's nominees down to four titles. During some of those meetings we were sure there would be blood, what with Gamecenter's Thief contingent ready to drop some fifth-ward-Bs on the Half-Life group.

Nevertheless, it was a good year for gamers all around, and we even managed to find common ground and agree on the top games of the past year. You'll also be happy to know that GamerX has been busy compiling his special awards, including the Worst Game of the Year. So sit back and enjoy the Gamecenter Awards for 1998!

Quantum Viking II review

For a high-end drive, these specs are middle of the road, not the fastest they could be, and these specs directly affect the price of the drive. Let's start off with spindle rotation speed, clocking in at 7,200 RPM. For an Ultra2 SCSI drive, this is considered the slowest Ultra2 speed available, most Ultra2 lines have two models, a 7,200 RPM model and a 10,000 RPM model, consistently higher in price. 7,200 RPM models produce significantly less heat than 10k RPM models, but the drive produced quite a bit of heat nonetheless. After running the drive for only a few hours, it was hot to the touch, if you buy this drive I'd have to recommend spending an extra 20 bucks for a hard drive cooling kit.

Cambridge Desktop Theatre 5.1

The subwoofer which comes with the Desktop Theatre 5.1 is the same one that is shipped with the 4-point surround set from Cambridge. Unfortunately this woofer isn't very high quality. The bass is too noisy and at higher volume you can hear the bass speaker popping. I've managed to get pretty good soundquality from it by putting the woofer on a piece of soft packaging material. This way it's decouppled from the ground and the sound quality is improved quite a bit.

Alan's Tech Views

The previous Friday, ATI had told me that new Rage128 drivers would be available in approximately two weeks and yet the Rage128 was available? I checked ATI for new drivers, and to my surprise, I found a new set of drivers A3A. I have since been given a new set of drivers labeled CD57.

These drivers have significant improvements in stability as I have experienced no crashes and have added 2D functionality such as gamma-correction for the Video Overlay. Of particular note was the implementation of 16-bit dithering in Direct3D. As noted by FiringSquad, the Rage128's 16-bit graphics quality was sub-par in the original beta drivers and these new drivers "corrected" the mottled effect by completely disabling dithering. Remarkably, the visual quality in 3Dmark '99 and Rage Dawning is pleasant although the textures in Shogo look terrible as one gets closer. Unusually, dithering is not a problem with the OpenGL ICD. What I would rather have is a "32-bit color override" for the Rage128 as the performance hit is minimal.

Elsa Victory II review

The Victory II is pretty much your standard issue Banshee based video card. The only difference being the onboard SGRAM instead of the more commonly used SDRAM. The Banshee chip is cooled with a standard heatsink, making it a poor candidate for overclocking. The software bundle that includes Test Drive 5, which is pretty good considering the full game would cost you at least $30 anyway. However, Elsa should have included a better 3D accelerated game than Test Drive, which doesn't fully show off the Banshee's performance capabilities.

Wicked3D Eyescream review

There is a slight performance decrease as far as frame rates are concerned within games that require high graphics performance. For all but the most basic of systems, the reduction in FPS is negligible and the trade off is well worth it.

First Person Shooters seem to benefit the most from the eyeSCREAM system, as the indoor and outdoor environments lend themselves well to stereo optics. Unreal is a blast, especially underwater as you swim through plants, which seem to literally protrude out of the screen. Half-Life seems tailor made for stereo, and you'll find yourself wanting to replay older titles just for the fun of it. Flightsims, racing and sports titles take on an amazing new aspect when running in stereo mode.
