Imaging Resource heeft een behoorlijke diepgaande review van de Nikon Coolpix 800, een digitale camera met een maximale resolutie van 1600 bij 1200px en 2X optische zoom, op het net gezet. Hier wat algemene info over het ding:

The Coolpix 800 is an attempt by Nikon to capture all the wonderful qualities of the 950 but with a lower price and minus a few features. The major differences lie in the mixed metal/plastic body, lesser lens, more limited exposure control, and the eliminated external flash option and reduced macro capability. The result is still a remarkably capable camera, at a substantially reduced price, relative to the Coolpix 950. Surprisingly, the designers did manage to improve a few of the 950?s options on the 800 model, such as improved power consumption, improved manual focusing, faster processing and an ultra high speed capture mode. It's also our impression that the LCD panel on the 800 is more usable in bright light than that on the 950.

Hango Electronics heeft een portable MP3 player met 4,86Gb grote harddisk aangekondigd. Het apparaatje is qua afmetingen vergelijkbaar met een PalmPilot, zo schrijft Wired News:

The current generation of MP3 portables has an Achilles heel when it comes to storage capacity. Whether it's flash memory or memory sticks, you're only going to get an hour or two of music on board most of the first-generation devices.

But a new portable MP3 player manufactured by Korea's HanGo Electronics solves this problem using a 4.86 GB hard drive, which can store up to 81 hours of MP3-formatted music, according to the company. The Personal Jukebox was originally designed in Compaq Computer's research lab, and is set to make its debut on November 15 at Comdex in Las Vegas.

Several sites have reported that European distributors are reporting that they have the CL Annihilator Pro (using DDR memory) available. According to Steve, that is NOT possible, as the DDR cards have not been shipped from the factory. The estimated release date of the Annihilator Pro is still "sometime before Christmas"

Anand heeft een review gepost van de socket370 versie van de nieuwe PIII Coppermine. De enige chipset die op dit moment overweg kan met de FC-PGA Coppermine is de i810E, en zoals je wellicht weet staat deze niet bepaald bekend om z'n hoge performance (vooral de geïntegreerde graphics accelerator is sneu). From the general trend of this review most of you would think that there is no reason to even pay any attention to the FC-PGA Pentium III E, and if you’re buying a computer today, you’d be completely right.

With the i810E as its currently only available platform, the FC-PGA would only appeal to businesses that are looking for a low cost but high performing system, thus making the FC-PGA perfect, right? Wrong.

There is a little thing called the Celeron that we’d have to ignore if the FC-PGA were to be considered a good option for businesses looking for a low cost but high performing system. The fact of the matter is that the Celeron is a fast enough solution for most applications that the FC-PGA Pentium III E really has no purpose, as long as it is coupled with the i810E platform. If Socket-370 is your only option and you’re looking for performance, the Celeron 500 is probably a better option than the FC-PGA Pentium III 500E in terms of cost. However, if you want something similarly priced to the Celeron yet faster in high end applications, the FC-PGA may interest you. For most gamers and users however, you won't be too interested by the FC-PGA on the i810E.

Bij Penstar Systems hebben ze een artikel in elkaar gedraaid over de toekomstige processors van Intel. Hieronder heb je wat info over de P7 "Willamette".

Willamette is the code name for Intel’s 7th generation chip. The P7 chip was actually supposed to have been released in early 1999 and finally retire the aging P6 architecture. Political infighting, loss of personnel, and other assorted reasons have led to not only the P7 chip to be delayed, but also the high end IA-64 based chip Merced (now Itanium). Both chips were supposed to have been released by now, but the above stated problems along with major technical and software hurdles have conspired to make Intel miss a large portion of deadlines with these two new architectures.

When Intel engineers attended the Athlon dinner in June of 1999, they were visibly shaken and taken aback by the presentation and the performance of the Athlon processor. Rumors soon circulated that the design for the P7 was thrown out and a new design was commenced. Many rumors abounded that the P7 was based off the Itanium, but that no longer looks to be the case. What is speculated is that the P7 will look a lot like the Athlon, but will have many tweaks and optimiztions that it will be faster per clock than the Athlon. There are several things that we can deduce from this and the upcoming architecture.

Bij Ars Technica hebben ze een grote Athlon moederborden round-up online gezet. Meegenomen in de test zijn de FIC SD-11, de Gigabyte GA-71X, de BCMGVC QS750 en de Microstar MS-6167. All around you really can't go wrong with an Athlon CPU in your machine regardless of what motherboard it sits on. But you probably already knew that. The purpose of this review was to cover some of the hottest Athlon mobos out there so you can get a head-start in deciding what to host that little hottie on.

I think it's clear that of all the boards currently on the market the FIC board wins hands down. Personally, after using all the boards I think that the FIC was the most stable, reliable, and just well..."felt" faster. Call me nuts, but I'd have to say that's the case. Now I know some of you out there have gotten a FIC board and your experience wasn't all peaches n' cream like mine, and the word on the street is that FIC may have sent some bad boards to market. But I can tell you, when you get a good one... it's a good experience. Another benefit of the FIC board is that it comes in at $10-15 less than the Microstar or Gigabyte boards.

The Microstar and Gigabyte boards would tie for second, and the BCM board comes in last due to the ancient expansion slot configuration.

ASUS has an Athlon motherboard known as the K7M, but from the rumors I've heard, ASUS won't be selling these boards under their own name. Rather, concerns over their relationship with Intel has supposedly led them to market the 'board under the "Freeway" brand name. Either way, the K7M supposedly features smaller FSB increments than the boards we've tested here.

hjs bracht het nieuwtje dat AMD haar Athlon prijzen weer eens flink naar beneden gooit. Vooral de 700MHz versie zal zo'n 18% goedkoper worden. Deze prijsdaling is natuurlijk het gevolg van de introductie van de Intel Coppermine van gisteren.

AMD's largest price reduction came on the 700MHz Athlon chip, whose price was slashed by 18 percent from $849 to $699. AMD's 650MHz Athlon was reduced from $615 to $519, a 16 percent price cut, company officials said.

Smaller cuts were made on Athlon 600MHz and 550MHz chips. The Athlon 600 fell from $449 to $419, a 7 percent reduction. The Athlon 550 chip was cut by 8 percent from $304 to $279. AMD held the price of the 500MHz Athlon steady at $209. These prices are for smaller quantities of 1,000 units or more, the officials said. The largest cut came on its 433MHz Celeron chip, which was reduced by $6 to $73, an 8 percent cut. Unquestionably, GeForce is the current fillrate 'king'. GeForce boards equipped with single data rate SDRAM are showing high resolution 16-bit fillrates that are 1.65 to 1.75 times, and 32-bit fillrates of 1.3 to 1.5 times that of the TNT2 at the same bandwidth.

Quake III Arena Test ver 1.08, which uses hardware transformation, shows the greatest benefit with a 16-bit fillrate that is 1.75 times that of TNT2. At high resolution and 32-bit color depth, the T & L advantage evaporates because of bandwidth constraints. At 183 MHz memory clock or 2.9 gigabytes of bandwidth, GeForce enables 'reasonable' frame rates (30 plus to 60 frames per second) in current games up to a resolution of 1600x1200x16 and 1024x768x32. GeForce should not be judged purely from a performance standpoint. Its implementation of mip-mapping and trilinear filter is superior to TNT2.

meendering gaf me deze link naar een nieuwsbericht van Nu.nl waarin gezegd wordt dat de Sun Solaris nu ook op een Intel Itanium 64bits CPU'tje draait:

Sun Microsystems heeft zijn Unix-variant Solaris aan de praat gekregen op een prototype van Intels eerste 64-bit processor, Itanium. Hiermee volgt Sun de voetsporen van Microsoft, IBM, Hewlett-Packard en de Linux-gemeenschap.

De reden voor het relatief late verschijnen van een functionerend Solaris op Intels - nog altijd toekomstige - 64-bit chip was de lastige beschikbaarheid van de benodigde hardware. Sun had moeite om toegang te krijgen tot prototypes van Itanium (voorheen bekend als Merced). Dit zegt Jonathan Han, productmanager voor Solaris op Intel-chips.

Toen Sun eenmaal prototype-chips in handen had, duurde het slechts een week voordat het zijn Solaris-voor-Intel aan de praat had op Intels 64-bit architectuur (IA-64). Overigens is de oorspronkelijke uitvoering van Solaris op Suns eigen Sparc-processoren al zeker een jaar een 64-bit besturingssysteem. Sinds de introductie van de huidige generatie Sparc is ook die onderliggende chip in 64-bit uitgevoerd.

1 - licht
Er worden geen extreme eisen aan de ventilatie van de computer gesteld. Typisch haalbaar zijn b.v. een Athlon 500 naar 550-600MHz. De cpu wordt geretourneerd met een dual-fan cooler.

2 - Zwaar
Je hebt een goed geventileerde kast. Haalbaar is b.v. een 500MHz naar 650MHz, en in enkele gevallen 500 naar 700 MHz. De cpu wordt geretourneerd met een extra zware dual-fan cooler.

Helaas kan niemand op voorhand garanderen hoever een specifieke Athlon te 'verbeteren' valt. Minimaal garanderen wij voor de modificaties een winst van 50MHz.

Hm, vrij cool! Check voor meer info de website van Corum. Even wat prijzen: de 'lichte' behandeling is 90 piek, de 'zware' treatment gaat je 160 piek kosten.

Enige dagen berichtten we jullie met gepaste tevredenheid dat er een Athlon Moederbord opkomst ZOU zijn, en dat deze in November zou komen. Mijn contacten bij ABIT hebben dit echter eerder altijd ontkend. Wat er echt gaat gebeuren blijft een vraag, ook na het volgende korte gesprekje, maar ik vind het wel iets helderder worden hoe de zaken ervoor staan :

Me - should I wait for ABIT to buy a new Athlon systemboard and CPU, or can I go for an ASUS K7M7 rightaway? [Je moet ze wel een beetje kietelen he?, red.]

I guess that enduser's english wasn't good enough, so he misunderstood maybe a marketing email.

Leave it or Believe it, maar ik denk dat het er gewoon glashard op neerkomt dat ABIT niet met een Athlon bord komt. Wees nou eerlijk... nu ASUS uit de kast komt dat ze de K7M hebben, kan dat de drempel niet langer zijn toch?

Op Gamespot UK hebben ze alvast een preview gemaakt voor het te verwachten Warcraft III. Helaas moeten we nog een jaar wachten voor de game uitkomt.

What we saw proved that Blizzard isn't settling for a tried-and-true sequel. Instead, it's hoping to create something new that will infuse an increasingly staid genre with creativity and personality. WarCraft III is not a real-time strategy game in the traditional sense. It's not a mission-based game where you start each scenario gathering resources, erecting buildings, and cranking out hordes of units. WarCraft III is narrowing its focus, injecting many roleplaying elements, and is being touted by Blizzard as a "3D roleplaying strategy game".

Op Gamers Central hebben ze een preview geplaatst van Rayman 2: The Great Escape. Rayman heeft het 2D wereldje na kritiek van de pers verlaten en gaat nu lekker verder in 3D. Hier de conclussie van de preview:

While all the reaction to the game so far seems to be positive, I am not convinced that gamers will be enthralled enough with the gameplay to turn it into a best seller. This is not necessarily UbiSoft's fault; it's just that I believe that the game's status as a platformer may limit its success to a degree. This is a shame because from what I've seen so far, Rayman 2 is a quality product, with top-notch visuals, diverse landscapes and a reasonably engrossing storyline. While the AI and the sound could have been improved, I think that overall Rayman 2 is made of all the right stuff. If Rayman 2 gets the type of recognition that it deserves, then I think that our limbless hero could make his way into many gamers' shopping baskets this Christmas.
