Internetten via Astra satelliet

  • Upstream via telefoonlijn (bijv. ISDN)
  • Abonnement schotel-account v.a. fl250,- per jaar (geen data-limiet)
Wheel of Time is goud

Rookstar schrijft: "Goed nieuws voor alle (fantasy) shoot 'em up fans!

So I hear you all have been waiting for some important news, well then, let me be the second (Mark was the first) to say that......I have finally gotten some sleep and am not nearly as cranky as I have been!

Alright, more specifically, the game has gone gold and should be in production now. The shelf date is a little over two weeks away (I could give the date we've been given, but I don't think that will accomplish much).

So what can I say, the game kicks ass and we've all had a blast playing it these last few weeks. At this point, though, we're all weary (well, not as weary, considering we were given the weekend off) and worn and mentally drained...and worse yet, we still have an international master to produce and a demo to get done (supposedly before the shelf date). I guess what I am trying to say is, we aren't out of the woods yet and we still have a few painful days ahead (some more than others).

Pacman op Kodak DC265 camera :)

Door Femme Taken, 26 oktober 1999 17:3615 reacties, bron: Mame for Digita

Hehe, cool.

Welcome to MAME for Digita. This is part of the MAME project, a not for profit project dedicated to preserving the history of arcade video games by emulating the inner workings of the actual hardware. MAME achieves this by running the original program code found in the arcade games. As such, it is much more than a reproduction, it is essentially that same game running via an emulated layer inside your digital camera. To work, the emulator requires ROMs of the original arcade machines, which must be provided by the user. No portion of the code of the original ROMs is included in the executable. Please do not ask me for ROMs and I will not provide you with any of them. Also please do not bundle any ROMs with this version of MAME.

You will find the most current version of MAME for Digita on this site, along with information about upcoming versions and instructions on how to use it.

GigaPixel Corporation today enters the 3D graphics market with the GP-1, a silicon-proven intellectual property (IP) core that brings a new level of visual quality to mainstream 3D graphics applications.

GP-1 achieves higher levels of performance through the use of full-scene anti-aliasing and Giga3D(TM) technology, a state-of-the-art visibility subsystem that applies an innovative approach to rendering 3D graphic images. The combination elevates visual quality on mainstream PCs to levels previously only available from high-end workstations.

Giga3D technology enables high-end visual performance on mainstream applications through a tiling architecture that processes only the polygons that the user will see on the screen. As a result, GP-1 reduces memory bandwidth requirements by up to 10 times, compared to existing solutions. GigaPixel has elevated performance without compromising die size.

GigaPixel's goal in the design of the GP-1 was to be 100 percent compatible with existing and future 3D applications and API's including Direct3D and OpenGL. Using a standard system interface, GP-1 is the only IP core with a tiling architecture that is completely compatible with existing and future 3D applications.

    Evolving Market Requires New Solutions

``The market for graphics systems is very dynamic, characterized by emerging companies and evolving technology,'' said George Haber, president and CEO of GigaPixel. ``We have made an incredible breakthrough with innovations in 3D architecture. With our tile-based architecture, we believe that we are well-positioned to provide a market-leading visual experience while meeting the price and time-to-market windows of our licensees.''

``Our research indicates the market for 3D graphics on the PC is $400 million'' said Dr. Jon Peddie, President of Jon Peddie Associates (Tiburon, Calif.), the leading market research firm tracking digital media. ``Conventional single pipeline graphics rendering schemes have reached their potential in visual performance, and cannot accommodate the increased requirements of emerging 3D applications. GigaPixel's architecture could change mainstream expectations by raising the bar for both performance and visual quality. Their core will be of interest to virtually all 3D market players.''

    Giga3D(TM) Architecture

As the depth complexity of 3D applications increases, the end-user is most affected by the frame rate. Conventional architectures tend to drop frames when many overlapping objects appear in the scene, resulting in jerky motions and jagged edges. To eliminate these effects, Giga3D uses visibility algorithms to determine if a pixel will be visible when the final scene is rendered. The setup only occurs with visible polygons, reducing power and processing requirements. The core is independent of memory types. SDRAM, SGRAM, DirectRDRAM and DDR can be supported. The off-chip memory accesses are burst on and off the chip for efficient memory bandwidth utilization, resulting in full speed multi-texturing.

The visibility algorithm also decreases the number of Z buffer writes and reads, texture fetches and frame buffer writes. Reducing reads, writes and fetches to memory, decreases the bandwidth requirements by up to ten times compared to alternative solutions. Pixel processing is done on chip, so that Giga3D does not cause any CPU overhead. This allows licensees to utilize the CPU bandwidth for other applications, which further increases the quality and speed of the graphics subsystem.

GP-1 also applies full-scene anti-aliasing to remove jaggies from polygon edges and intersections. Unlike other solutions, Giga3D maintains its performance when full-scene anti-aliasing is enabled. Each pixel's color value is averaged with the adjacent pixels, resulting in smooth intersections between polygons after the image has been rendered. These visual quality and performance levels have previously been seen only on high-end SGI workstations.

    Compatibility, Support and Availability

GigaPixel supports integration efforts through a synthesized design that enables smooth IP integration. The company develops and provides standard drivers to the content developers for designing next generation 3D applications.

Giga3D architecture is available now for licensing to 3D chip, graphics card manufacturers and system companies, as well as content developers.

Door Femme Taken, 26 oktober 1999 17:059 reacties, bron: The Register

Internal Intel documents have revealed a massive shortage of Coppermine parts, just a day after Chipzilla beat its chest to the world's press, and bellowed: "Look how well I've done".

The mobile Pentium III is in particularly short supply, with distributors and dealers being told that boxed units are now unlikely to arrive in volume until Q1 of 2000, with availability still very limited in Q4. Intel also pulled the plug on its "early access" plan for distributors and dealers, under which they can buy up to three new processors ahead of launch. In this case, the Pentium III 733s, 700s, 667s, 650s, 600EBs, 600Es, and 533s in the SECC2 package were all affected.

The move is a further grave embarrassment for Intel in the wake of the i820 Caminogate debacle, and prompts the question of whether Intel really was ready to ship product, or whether it was just a marchitectural move to try to scupper AMD's successful intro of the Athlonium.

    Rambus is de toekomst?

Door Femme Taken, 26 oktober 1999 16:544 reacties, bron: The Register

Ondanks voortdurende problemen zien analysten nog steeds toekomst in Rambus, zo bericht The Register:

He [analist van Dataquest Europa] said that technologies such as DDR, a souped up version of PC100/PC133 memories, were likely to disappear. "DDR is really just an interim measure on the way to Rambus," he said. "It's not as scaleable."

The interim technologies were likely to appear and disappear. His view is that over the next three quarters the market is likely to see Rambus memory technology start to appear in some volumes.

"Sooner or later, Rambus will win out," he said. And he expects it to become the mainstream technology by the end of next year.

    IBM promoot DDR SDRAM

The Web site will include designs and technical information for double data rate, or DDR, memory, IBM said.

[...] Delays in chips that support Rambus technology have weighed on the company's stock, which has fallen 34 percent since reaching a high of 115 1/4 on July 15. IBM's move to foster DDR development may hurt people's faith in Rambus, an analyst said.

''This sends the message that there are other memory types out there,'' said Sherry Garber, a memory chip analyst at Phoenix- based Semico Research Corp. ''Investors may get nervous about Rambus.''

[...] Double data rate memory will be used for workstations and servers, IBM said. ''IBM is committed to the success of DDR as a mainstream memory solution,'' said James Karl, a manager in IBM's Microelectronics unit.

    Sunon 120 & 80mm case fan review

Ok, Glenn. Breathe deep. Control the excitement. These fans... blow out so much air that it will make every single fan you have used before seem overspecified exponentially. I'm serious. You could blow-dry your dog with the 120mm fan, and the smaller one is a perfect fit for your hamster. I have an industrial-size fan in this room right now that costs twice as much as this fan, is twice as large, and blow out only half as much air.

    Asus K7M review

..and now I was set for some overclocking! 110MHz FSB, or 550MHz from our 500 unit, was a no brainer, simply change the FSB setting in the BIOS. It ran stable for a couple of hours of Driver (this stress testing is terrible work, I can tell you) with SETI in the background. 120 refused to POST. 115 would lock up halfway through loading Win98. 111 would load Win98 but crash shortly after loading Driver. Opening the case and ducting cold air onto the CPU fans with another fan prolonged it slightly, but the results were similar. I tried boosting the core voltage using the jumpers on the board (vcore adjust in the bios woulda been nice, guys) .. from the default 1.6v to 1.7v made no difference, at 1.8v it made no difference except the board beeped continuously during the boot process.. I decided not to try any higher (the board allows up to 2.0v) with this cooling. Even setting the mysterious "VIO" jumper to the highest setting, which is supposed to boost the voltage to the chipset, ram, PCI etc had no effect.

    Microsoft X-Box details

Door Femme Taken, 26 oktober 1999 15:578 reacties, bron: The Register

The one curious titbit in the whole piece is that the device may not, as previously thought, use Windows CE as the OS, but instead use a cut down version of Windows 98. That makes sense, since DirectX, Microsoft's games-oriented API already runs on Win98, but not on CE. Still, since the comment comes from an analyst rather than anyone "familiar with the situation", how accurate it is (ie. is it simply the guy's opinion of what's the likely scenario) remains to be seen.

[...] Dow Jones suggests Bill Gates was originally to have launched X-Box at Comdex next month, but that plan -- if it ever was a plan -- seems to have been canned. If that is the case, either the reaction from the games industry to Microsoft's plan hasn't been too positive.

Kenwood introduceert 72-speed TrueX CD-ROM drive

San Jose, CA, October 25, 1999-- Today Kenwood Technologies (USA), Inc. announces the Kenwood 72X TrueX™ CD-ROM drive, their third high performance drive based on Zen Research's TrueX™ technology. The Kenwood 72X TrueX CD-ROM drive delivers an unparalleled sustained transfer rate ranging from 6.75MB/sec. to 10.8MB/sec. across the entire disc. Like all TrueX CD-ROM drives, the 72X TrueX reads 7 tracks of data in parallel. It employs Partial Constant Angular Velocity (PCAV) for optimum performance. Unlike a 56X "Max" drive that rotates at over 11,000 RPMs with excessive noise and vibration, the 72X TrueX drive's revolutionary design virtually eliminates vibration and noise while rotating at only 5,100 to 2,700 RPMs

"With the Kenwood 72X TrueX CD-ROM drive, users can be assured that they are getting the highest transfer rate attainable in the market today for their CD based applications and data such as 3D games, data visualization, desktop publishing, software installation, and digital audio extraction," said A. J. Hart, Senior Vice President at Kenwood Technologies.

"Reading several tracks in parallel is an elegant way to improve the data rate without spinning the disc faster. With this technology Kenwood raises the bar for CD and DVD drive performance," said Wolfgang Schlichting, Research Manager of International Data Corporation.

Kenwood TrueX CD-ROM drives have won over 20 awards in less than one year and continue to set the industry performance standard. The Kenwood 72X TrueX CD-ROM drive builds on the success of the preceding 52X TrueX and 42X TrueX drives in the aftermarket channel.

Kenwood's 72X TrueX CD-ROM drive embodies Kenwood's competitive advantage of being faster, quieter, and more reliable than other drives. The 72X TrueX drive delivers a performance range of 45X to 72X across the entire disc, unlike an advertised 56X "Max" CD-ROM drive that performs at 24X on its innermost tracks and claims performance of 56X on its outermost tracks (if the disc is full). The Kenwood 72X TrueX CD-ROM drive offers a more reliable flow of data to the user with rotational speeds that are less than half that of a 56X "Max" drive, enabling precise readability of media with limited vibration. Zen's TrueX technology allows the Kenwood 72X TrueX to read multiple tracks concurrently, resulting in a faster, quieter, and more reliable CD-ROM drive.

Kenwood 72X TrueX CD-ROM drives are available today at a suggested retail price of $129.95. Kenwood TrueX CD-ROM drives are available in bulk pack, white box, and retail box through Kenwood distributors including Merisel, Tech Data , D & H, CONSAN GATES/ARROW, and ICG. Kenwood products are also available from reseller partners including CompUSA, Fry's Electronics, Micro Center, CDW, and MicroWarehouse. In March of this year, Kenwood announced Compaq Computer as its first PC OEM to incorporate Kenwood's TrueX CD-ROM drives in their product offerings.

    Logitech Wingman Force review

The WingMan Force performed very well in just about every game I tested it with. Other than my aforementioned problem with setting up Joysticks for different games. I was really surprised at the strength of the force feedback. I cranked it all the way up to 150% in the control panel and realized that it was way too much to play well with. It was almost impossible to control well with that much force.

I was also surprised at how quiet the unit was. Even when I was pushing very hard against the joystick the I-Force drive didn't make a sound. This is a welcome aspect of the joystick, as I know how bothersome it can be to hear the $130 piece of equipment you just bought making strange noises.

    GlobalWin FDP32 socket370 heatsink review

The FDP32 is one awesome heatsink!!! It beats practically every socket 370 heatsink on the market in sheer size and it performed excellently throughout every torture test I could come up with. The only drawback is the fact that it doesn't fit on all motherboards. So, before you purchase the FDP32 make sure it will fit in your current configuration. However, this is not a reason to rank the FDP32 any lower. It is indeed the best passive socket 370 cooler currently available. Enthusiastically recommended!

    Microsoft touch mouse

The Touch Mouse can be used to simplify the user interface and reduce screen clutter by sensing the context of what the user is currently doing. In graphical user interfaces, there is a constant tension (due to limited screen real estate) between UI that is up all the time versus having the maximum possible screen real estate allocated to the user's document itself.

However, observe that most UI widgets can only be used when the user is holding the mouse. If the user is not holding the mouse, the widgets often serve no purpose and only get in the way. Thus, Touch and Release events from a touch-sensitive mouse can be used to fade in or fade out portions of the user interface based on which input device(s) the user is currently holding.

For example, the figure below shows a time series where toolbars and scrollbars fade out when the user lets go of the mouse, thus allocating maximum display real estate to the document itself during text entry or reading of the document. When the user once again touches the mouse, the toolbars and scrollbars fade back in quickly for immediate use.

    Bug in 733MHz Coppermine?

Door Femme Taken, 26 oktober 1999 12:445 reacties, bron: The Register

Authoritative German magazine c't is reporting that there could be a bug in Intel's latest flagship desktop chip, the 733MHz .18 micron Pentium III.

But Intel says that the problem is down to the defect in the i820 chipset the magazine used to test the Coppermine chip.

In the latest printed edition of the magazine, which reviews the Coppermine processor, the magazine reports compiler optimisation errors using both Intel and Microsoft software.

The magazine apparently also reports hardware errors, possibly related to the brand new level one/level two cache in the top end chip.

    Pentium III Coppermine 800 preview

At 800MHz, the P3 Coppermine is delivering more that a 100% performance gain over last year's Pentium II 400 CPU and .it's somewhat surprising to think that we're quickly approaching the introduction of CPUs that will be described by their Gigahertz speed rating rather than their Megahertz speed rating.

To put that in perspective it's taken Intel roughly 20 years to go from a 1MHz desktop processor to a 1000MHz (1GHz) desktop processor. If that rate of progress is maintained, will we be using 100+GHz processors in our desktop PCs 20 years from today? And how long after that will it be before 1THz (Terahertz, or 1000GHz) is achieved?

Only time will tell if engineers can keep building on the impressive gains that have been made thus far, but one thing is certain: Both AMD and Intel must continue to push the edge of the envelope in CPU performance or risk being left behind by the other or external competitors like NEC and Sony as the market moves forward.

    Anand's PIII Coppermine review

ow what about the Athlon? The Athlon 600 is still my pick for the best performing chip at a fairly reasonable price. It has no problem outperforming most of Intel’s solutions and if you pick up a modified Athlon 600 (we will be reviewing some of these modification options next week) the chances are very good that you’ll be able to hit at least 650MHz (700MHz won’t be too far out of your reach either). But if you already have a BX setup, should you upgrade to the Athlon? Unfortunately the answer is no. The quality of the motherboards available for the Athlon is definitely sub par and if you need a performance upgrade now and already have a BX motherboard, your best bet is to pick up a BIOS upgrade that enables support for the Coppermine core and pick up a Pentium III E.

If you’re building a new computer and the decision comes down to Athlon or Pentium III E, the choice is as close to 50/50 as possible thus leaving it up to you. On the one hand, the Athlon is the faster (clock for clock) and based on much more sophisticated architecture. And on the other hand the Pentium III E has much better motherboard support (even with the BX) and runs considerably cooler.

    Computer prijzen stijgen fors?

Time for another 3dfx Napalm (Voodoo4) teaser, this time telling you that you are not going to have to worry about feeding your animal. As long as you pick up one of "The Pet Auto-Feeder" you will be able to free up your time to stand in front of your awesome new Voodoo4 card. Ok, so that sounds ok, but where is that pet of yours supposed to take a crap? Or is that what the toilet paper that was in the first Voodoo4 teaser was for. Maybe there is going to be something else in the hardware as well, to keep your doggy from shitting all over you floor. The D-Buffer, or in other words the Doggy buffer. OK, so enough of my thoughts for today.....

The level editor allows you to build whole new level layouts, import new models, even change the behavior of existing objects within the world of Drakan! The toolset allows you to mix and match visual special effects and programming behaviors, to create new powerful weapons, traps or puzzles. For example, you could make your own spike trap room by building a new dungeon with the 3D map editor, building a custom spike model and importing it into the game, and then using proximity detectors to have Rynn trigger the spikes when she walks near them!
