Hitachi SuperScan 19" monitor review

A few things that stand out when toying around with this monitor is that it produces a very clear, crisp , and bright image, which makes overall use very comfortable and worthwhile. Even after long periods of use I didn't experience tiredness or drowsiness due to the high refresh rates which it supports. With a 0.22 mm horizontal and 0.14 mm vertical dot pitch, Hitachi's super high contrast tube make both text and graphics appear bright and sharp. Rest assured, with a viewable area of 18", the CM761U allots enough space for you to have many open windows simultaneously and the same applies if you are working with image creation/editing programs such as Photoshop, Corel, etc. I expected some minor flickering on the screen when I bumped up the resolution up to 1600 X 1200 but with a refresh rate of 75 Hz flickering was almost invisible to my eyes and therefore should not cause any significant strain on my eyes. However, desktop icons get really tiny at this resolution so if you have don't the greatest eyesight you'll probably want to keep a resolution setting below 1600 X 1200.

The linux Kingpin v1.20 port can be downloaded from the following location:

http://impact.frag.com/ridah/kptest/kingpin-1.20_glibc-i386-linux2.0.tar.gz

This is an unofficial full client build. I will be putting together a server only official build soon, which will hopefully find it's way onto the official Kingpin page.

Athlon cooling to da max

"Had to move three resistors to get the OEM Athlon 500Mhz running at 800MHz. I also bumped the voltage from 1.8 to 1.9v. Well , It runs rock solid at 800MHz. Will run Prime95 for one day and then will go for 850 or 900MHz."

Tiberian Sun Firestorm add-on info

The game will ship with 18 new missions and a bevy of cool new playable units, including an artillery piece called a Juggernaut – a walking, three-gun piece that is the GDI counter to NOD artillery -- and a multiple bombing thing called the Cyborg Reaper. Here’s the lowdown:

  • Mobile EMP: A GDI vehicle that will disable your opponents’ stuff, even forcing underground units to surface. This baby winds up a big electrical charge, and then sends out an awesome looking shockwave that wreaks havoc and mayhem.

  • Cyborg Reaper: Though we didn’t get to see this in action, Stojsavljevic’s description had us excited. Only to be found in multiplayer, this puppy fires two missiles, which then split into multiple bomblets that rain bad news on your attackers.

  • Limpet Drone: This can be used by both sides, and is a sneaky little monkey. You hide it underground and wait for someone (hopefully not you) to drive over it. Once someone does, it slows the unit down to a crawl. Get to a mobile repair vehicle or a repair pad to get rid of it. While it’s attached to your opponent, it will also let you see exactly where he (and his buddies) are. Very nice.

  • Mobile War Factory: Just like Americans, we’re always looking to do something on the run. The mobile war factory will be available to both sides and will give you the ability to crank out units anywhere on the map with one caveat – you won’t be able to build at your original base while it’s deployed.

  • Mobile Stealth Generator: Keep your boys real quiet-like, and you’re enemy will never know what hit them. It just can’t keep things cloaked while it’s on the move. For both sides.

  • Juggernaut: A three-barreled artillery for GDI that walks around, then plants a third leg when it’s ready to fire. More of a saturation weapon than a gun with pinpoint accuracy, but we’re willing to bet you won’t let that stop you from using it.

  • Jumpjets: No, these aren’t new, but the team is giving them a nifty new ability. When they fly over cloaked structures or units, the hidden enemies will be revealed. Take that, Mr. Hide-y Hide-skins.

Athlon moederborden round-up

FIC SD-11 - The SD-11 was the first board readily available in mass production quantities, and it certainly shows. While there's nothing wrong with the board (besides incompatibility problems with the Athlon 650), this board really doesn't suit the gamers taste. The board runs all other Athlon's perfectly, but that's about it. The board is the largest Athlon motherboard that we've come across thus far, a quality we don't readily approve of, and just isn't the best quality. A recent BIOS update allows for front side bus speed adjustments (instead of just 100, you can choose from 120 and 133 MHz). Unfortunately, the current crop of Athlon's can't reach these bus speeds without a reduction in the multiplier, which requires popping off the processor cartridge and ripping off resistors, a process we don't approve of here.

Microstar 6167 - Initially, this was the first board to hit store shelves, but was pulled due to the fact that the shipping versions didn't meet AMD's standards for an Athlon-class board. Nevertheless, the board is back in action, now completely meeting AMD's standards. The board is the same size as the GigaByte GA-7IX, which are both much smaller than the FIC board. This board has zero options for overclocking.

Gigabyte GA-7IX - Nearly identical to the Microstar board, the GA-7IX takes the cake at this moment for the nicest Athlon motherboard out at this time. While it doesn't have any overclocking options (even though the FIC does, none of the speeds are reachable), this is the best made board out there, design wise. Unlike the other two boards, this board has 3-pin fan plugs where they should be, and a thermal probe under the CPU. Not to mention that all the jumpers are labeled clearly on the PCB board for easy setup and usage. The board has larger capacitors all over the board, rather than FIC's and Microstar's capacitors that are around half the size. Basically, all in all, this board actually is up to par with most BX boards, with motherboards out any overclocking.

VIA Apollo Pro133A Chipset review

Well, what is the outcome? VIA has a very up to date chipset supporting all latest technologies such as PC133 SDRAM, 133MHz processor bus, AGP 4x, ATA-66, AC'97 and a couple of other pleasant trifles. Intel in its turn can't boast anything of the kind, especially after a number of failures it has suffered recently. In other words, VIA Apollo Pro133A doesn't have any really threatening competitors, because i440BX is hopelessly outdated.

On the other hand, there are no applications now, which could show a really tangible performance gain due to VIA Apollo Pro133A's advantages. That is why we can't point out any serious reasons for the owners of i440BX based mainboards and processors with 100MHz bus to urgently change their mainboards. Of course, VIA Apollo Pro133A is a much more promising chipset, so it seems quite logical to bear it in mind when buying a new mainboard.

Moreover, for its new processors with 133MHz bus, in particular those on Coppermine core, Intel can't offer anything but a lonely i810e, which looks much more like a mockery. That's why if you are longing for a Coppermine with 133MHz external frequency, the only way out for you is to purchase a mainboard on VIA Apollo Pro133A (or VIA Apollo Pro133) chipset.

Western Digital 27.3 GB harddisk review

Though ATA-66 hardware technology is not exactly new, it is only recently that it has become cheap enough the for the general public to easily get their hands on. With this in mind, I decided to test out the difference for myself, to see if the extra speed could possibly be worth it. I found a great deal on a Western Digital 27.3 Gig 7200 RPM ATA-66 drive (about $200) and jumped on the bandwagon.

Western Digital has been known for their great customer service, and you can tell from the moment you open the retail box of their new Expert series hard drives. Easy to read step-by-step instructions for those that have never attempted a self-install of a hard drive, as well as the all important EZ-BIOS disk for those poor, unfortuate souls with motherboards that dont' get along with drives over 528 MB or 2.1 GB. Ha!

In my own system, I added the 27 GB drive as a slave on my current 17 GB Maxtor drive. I copied a directory, about 5 gigs in size, to the newly installed and format drive. I then did a simple test: highlight the folder, right click, and choose Properties. Then, wait to see how long it takes to count all the files and size of the folder in bytes. While I heard a little over 1 second of grinding on the Maxtor drive, to see the 5.19 GB of data statistics, the same test on the Western Digital was instananeous. What does this mean? What causes this? 7200 RPM and ATA-66.

"Ultra ATA/66 is the next generation Ultra ATA interface that doubles the current burst data transfer rate to 66.6 MB/s. The high-speed interface allows host computers to send and retrieve data faster, removing bottlenecks associated with system performance."

De rest vind je hier.

Duke Nukem Forever Q&A

>>>It is very unfortunate that 3DRealms is beating around the bush on DNF. There are many games that will be and are being released that will put DNF to shame and the only reason is because of 3DRealms taking their sweet time to release a game that is soon to have another outdated graphics engine!!!

Please provide a list of FPS shooters that do not focus primarily on online only play (TF2, Q3A, UT) that will crush us? I'll be waiting

>>>Sorry guys but personally I do not think this game could possibly hold a candle to games like Team Fortress 2 (Online Battle). But this kind of thing happens when you try to use one of the oldest marketing schemes known, i.e keeping your customers in the dark so it makes your product more desirable when it is released.

I don't see what you base your opinion on? TF2 is built upon the Quake 2 engine. We are built upon Unreal. Both are similar and both companies are adding additional technology to them. So exactly how will we be crushed or left behind? Not to even mention that the two games aren't even in the same genre. You might as well compare Diablo 2 to DNF or apple to oranges

>>>Can Duke get drunk in the game?

We actually had this in the original Duke 3D, but removed it. Looking back we should have kept it But the effect wasn't good enough then.

>>>Has DNF switched to the QuakeIII engine?

Nobody's swicthed to anything around here. DNF will be shown in the Dec PC Gamer and you will all get a small early taste of the game.

Lighting artikel

The most common use of environment mapping to render highly reflective objects (such as mirrors). The way environment mapping works is by generating an environment map (a large sphere, or a cube surrounding the object textured with the reflections) and then mapping each pixel on the object to a point on the environment map (or blending with a pixel on the environment map for partially reflective surfaces). The simple formula most people use is

U(texture x coordinate) = Normal.x*width*0.5 + width*0.5
V(texture y coordinate) = Normal.y*height*0.5 + height*0.5

The Normal refers to the normal of the object. The width and height are dimensions of the environment map texture. This simplified method is actually not correct because the environment map is sphere and you have to convert the normal into spherical coordinates before you can access it properly. In actual practice, the approximation above is easier/faster and the difference is negligible.

I've been covering the OS beat for about 15 years now, and in that time, I can recall seeing only three or four genuine innovations. It's been a while since something really spun my socks. BeOS, which I wrote off for years as a MacOS clone for PCs, recently crept back onto my radar screen. This time I took a closer look, and was pleased and surprised by what I found. There are things I would change about it, but BeOS could be an alternative to Linux for those who are looking for the right mix of fast, cheap, easy, and reliable.

BeOS has been around long enough to be up to version 4.5 and it turns out to be pretty cool. I've seen many sound-bite summaries of BeOS that call it "Linux meets MacOS." Frankly, that spin doesn't grab my interest. BeOS had the misfortune of starting its climb at the same time Linux did, and the Linux people climbed a lot faster. The technical media lapped up the high-volume rhetoric from the Linux camp, which insists there is only one hip, alternative OS.

The Gateway Astro features a 400MHz Celeron processor, 64MB of synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM) and a 4.3GB hard drive built into the same chassis with a 15-inch monitor, floppy drive, CD-ROM drive, stereo speakers and a modem. The system has an external keyboard and mouse.

The Astro includes four USB ports, and comes with a one-year warranty.

This is Gateway's second all-in-one system, following the release of its Profile PC, which weighs 8 pounds, uses a 400MHz AMD K6-2 processor, and includes a flat-panel display.

Gateway said today that the Astro is focused more on ease of use.

Plextor gaat IDE, introduceert PlexWriter 8/4/32A

Door Femme Taken, 16 oktober 1999 03:2722 reacties, bron: Plextor.be

Plextor, one of the leading companies for the development and production of CD-ROM drives, CD-Recorders and CD-ReWriters with a SCSI interface, is expanding its range with its first ATAPI CD-ReWriter, the PlexWriter 8/4/32A, which writes CD's at 8-speed, rewrites at 4-speed and reads at 32-speed. The PlexWriter 8/4/32A is the ideal instrument for both professional and private users who want to copy CD's, archive large files, or create multimedia productions.

The PlexWriter 8/4/32A is available as a Retail Package containing, in addition to the CD unit itself, 1 CD-Recordable Disk, 1 CD-Rewritable Disk, an extensive set of CD-Recording Software (WinOnCD + Packet CD), an audio cable, an E-IDE interface cable and an Instruction Manual in 12 languages (German, English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Hungarian, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Portuguese). The PlexWriter 8/4/32A is supported by a unique one-year on-site collect and return guarantee by Plextor, by which any inconveniences resulting from a defect are reduced to a minimum. The firmware is stored in FlashROM which makes it possible to quickly and easily upgrade to the latest version. CD-Text is also completely supported.

With the PlexWriter 8/4/32A, the user has a perfect all-in-one product for backup, duplication and all multimedia applications. CD's can be written, rewritten and read on a single unit, and at the highest possible speed.

Klipsch ProMedia v.2 - 400 speaker review

If there was ever a company that, throughout audio history, have helped define "Sound Quality", it is Klipsch. The ProMedia speakers are a shining example of high-end computer audio. The speakers reproduce sound in the most clear and accurate manner I have heard to date from PC speakers. When a set of speakers come out and rival $1000+ sets of home audio equipment, people stop and listen. As usual, when testing speakers, I used a Creative SoundBlaster Live. I played probably over 200-300 songs over the past week and just can't turn these things off. I also watched some DVD movies and the speakers sound fantastic, only lacking a decoder and an extra speaker to experience 5.1 AC-3 sound. Gaming sounds nothing less than immersive. Playing games like Need For Speed: High Stakes, listening to the roar of your opponent coming up behind you, just adds that extra level of realism. With the sheer power of these speakers, the sounds in certain games, especially those in the low frequency range, are just outstanding. One of the things I noticed in all of the PC speakers I have heard is the subwoofer. Although some of them have sounded great, they still lack that punch that you can feel throughout the room and through your body cavity.

For those of you that get a good laugh out of the Mac vs. PC phenomenon, there's a pretty funny article over at Byte. Apple's Driven Me To Wintel details a confessed Apple loyalist's conversion to the Wintel platform. Here's an excerpt: Oh, by the way, it also turns out that Windows is a better OS than Macintosh. Maybe that wasn't always true, but right now, at the end of the 20th century, Windows is better than the Mac OS. It's easier to learn, easier to use, more stable, and simpler for all the Average Joes out there whose only goal is to hook up a printer and a monitor and surf the Internet. It's good for a few laughs and should give you good reason to voice your opinion in the forums.

Erg grappig, check 'm hier by Byte.com
