In a historic vote today, a powerful Internet governance group tentatively approved the first new global Internet domains since the advent of .com, .net and .org more than a decade ago.
The Board of Directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) voted unanimously to clear the way for .aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name and .pro to be added as generic top- level domains (gTLDs) to the "legacy" root server, which lies at the heart of the Internet's worldwide addressing system.
ICANN - the US not-for-profit organization charged with managing the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS) - has been meeting here all this week, primarily to determine which address suffixes should be added to the root.
[...] Not included among the domains awarded was ".web," one of the most popular proposals among members of the Internet community.
Affilias had proposed .web as its first choice for a new domain, but that selection was rejected by the board due to controversy over who should have the rights to the domain.
A small California firm called Image Online Design has been operating an "alternative" .web domain for several years. While IOD's proposal to operate .web was rejected by the ICANN board, the board expressed concern about awarding the domain to a group other than IOD.
Winning applicants will still have to agree on contractual terms with the ICANN staff in order for their domains to be added to the legacy root.
