The Nessus Project is bezig met de verdere ontwikkeling van Nessus, een security scanner die een netwerk kan scannen op bekende exploits en openstaande services. Let er daarbij wel op dat het programma alleen gebruikt mag worden wanneer je toestemming hebt om de veiligheid van het netwerk te controleren. De lijst met exploits en openstaande services is zeer groot en kan eventueel verder uitgebreid worden met eigen geschreven scripts. Het pakket draait onder de meeste Posix-systemen zoals onder andere MacOS X, FreeBSD, Linux en Solaris. Onlangs heeft men versie 2.0.12 vrijgegeven in de stable branch met het volgende changelog:

- Fixed a bug in ./configure which would sometimes assume that GTK is not installed whereas it actually is.
- Fixed a race condition in nessus-adduser for users who do not configure their TMPDIR variable (thanks to Cyrille Barthelemy).
- Fixed a bug in nessus-update-plugins which would not update the plugins properly on all systems (thanks to Keith Butler).
- Fixed the installer to compile Nessus with GTK support if gtk-config OR pkg-config is installed.
