Software-update: CoreELEC 19.2-Matrix

De ontwikkelaars achter Core Embedded Linux Entertainment Center hebben kortgeleden versie 19.2 van Matrix uitgebracht. CoreELEC is een fork van LibreELEC, dat op zijn beurt is ontstaan nadat een groot aantal ontwikkelaars bij OpenELEC wegens onenigheid is vertrokken en voor zichzelf is begonnen. Deze Linux-distributies zijn gebaseerd op Kodi en kunnen een computer tot een volwaardige htpc omtoveren. CoreELEC richt zich daarbij specifiek op de chips van Amlogic. De releasenotes voor deze uitgave ziet er als volgt uit:

CoreELEC 19.2-Matrix

CoreELEC 19.2-Matrix is now available. It was a rather short development cycle this time around, which saw the CoreELEC developers focusing on fixing the most common issues reported with the 19.1-Matrix release.

Het is mij nog niet gelukt om OpenVPN hierop aan de praat te krijgen. De addin van mijn VPN provider gaat iig nog uit van Python 2, dus die is niet compatible.

Lukt het ook niet met de zomboided OpenVPNManager addin?
Die werkt prima bij mij op coreelec.

Die python 2 addins beginnen wel heel pijnlijk te worden:

We did not want to hurt the people using Python 2. So, in 2008, we announced that we would sunset Python 2 in 2015, and asked people to upgrade before then. Some did, but many did not. So, in 2014, we extended that sunset till 2020.

How long is it till the sunset date?

The sunset date has now passed; it was January 1st, 2020.

Python 3 builds of 18.x "Leia" were available, and the code was in the Python 3 feature branch - but this was merged in October 2019, so any build after that date would have included it. More broadly, developer builds of Kodi 19 became available in November 2019, with Alpha builds following along in August of last year. That means, nearly two years after saying we were making the switch, the first test builds of a pure Python 3 Kodi became available - and we've then finally switched over our release code just over a year later. That's three years after the initial announcement.

And yet... and yet... the move seems to have taken people by surprise. Operating systems have dropped support for Python 2; it's a huge security risk, as it (and its libraries) are unmaintained; you shouldn't be using it unless you really, really have to. And yet...

Met die hele context is het bizar dat we richting 2022 gaan met addons die mogelijk zelfs geschreven zijn ná de originele python2 sunset date. Dat er 5 jaar écht wel tekenen waren om te migreren. Dat er al bijna 2 jaar gewoon geen security fixes zijn en .. dit alsnog een probleem is.

Ik heb nog maar net voor het eerst Kodi opgezet en het is bizar hoeveel addons gewoon niet lijken te bestaan voor kodi 19.
