Winamp is in staat om diverse mediabestanden af te spelen. Oorspronkelijk werd het programma ontwikkeld om mp3-bestanden af te spelen, maar in de loop der tijd is er ondersteuning toegevoegd voor een groot aantal mediaformaten. Op het forum van Winamp is de aankondiging verschenen versie 5.22, de nieuwste telg van het prorgamma. De update kan gedownload worden als Lite-, Full- en Pro-variant, waarvan de laatstgenoemde uitvoering de shareware versie is van Winamp.
