MSNBC heeft er nog maar eens eentje gepost. Geen wereldschokkende info die je nog niet elders tegen hebt kunnen komen. Dit stukje over de verwachte prijs van de K7 lijkt me wel interessant om hier te quoten:

The K7 could help. Mr. Slater estimates that AMD could sell the chips for $400 to $700, far above the $78 average selling price for its chips in the first quarter. Mr. Meyer said the K7 design makes it easier to boost the megahertz rating of the K7 chips without straining the tolerances of its manufacturing equipment. But Intel still has the financial resources to keep building advanced factories more quickly, Mr. Slater noted.

Ik zag bij THG Tech news een nieuwsbericht over een headset die 1,4 miljoen pixels (2x 1024x748) op een LCD display kan weergeven:

Daeyang E&C and Colorado MicroDisplay Inc. are partnering to produce an SVGA headset display designed for gamers, mobile and wearable PC users, and industrial product applications. The DYHMD-B2000 headset will utilize CMD's reflective Dynamic Nematic Liquid Crystal on Silicon technology, to create a fully immersive display without the pixelation of the poly-silicon method currently used in head-mounted displays. The headset’s interface is designed for easy connection to portable DVD players, notebook and desktop PCs, televisions, video tape recorders, camcorders, game consoles and a variety of other devices. Working prototypes and finished models of the display headset will be demonstrated June 22-24 at the PC Expo Conference in New York, with initial OEM delivery slated to begin in Q1 2000. The unit will display 1.4 million effective pixels, providing a resolution-scaleable solution for various types of content -- such as arcade gaming, immersive training, DVD, video movies and virtual prototyping. Intel begint met levering 0,18micron processors

EBN Online en PC World berichten dat Intel is begonnen met de levering van 0,18micron mobile PII's en Celeron processors. Ik wist niet dat Intel al zo ver was met hun 0,18micron fabricage technologie:

ntel on Monday ships a 400-MHz Celeron chip for the value mobile market and a 400-MHz Pentium II for performance notebooks. The two new Intel processors are the first chips to use 0.18 micron production, enabling faster and more powerful processing than its 0.25 micron predecessors.

In eerste instantie zal het dus nog om procossors gaan voor mobile computers, dus niet interessant voor ons overklokkers (een 0,18micron Celeron zou anders zeker tot leuke dingen in staat moeten zijn ).

Xitel Storm Platinum review

AnandTech heeft een test gedaan van de Xitel Storm Platinum, dezelfde geluidskaart die ik een paar week geleden gereviewed. Best wel een koele kaart. Vooral de bijgeleverde force feedback koptelefoon is tof:

Actually, this is one of the few products in recent memory that actually went above and beyond expectations. It's not perfect, but it really does feel like you're wearing a subwoofer, or at least sitting near one. The claimed frequency response is 5Hz - 28kHz, which is actually wider than the typical human hearing range of 20Hz - 20kHz. Why go so low? You can still feel sounds below 20Hz, it's that sort of rumble you get during a suspenseful scene in a good movie theater. The sound quality won't impress audiophiles, but for just $20 when purchased in the Gamer's Pack, there aren't many better options at that price point. They're also available for $40 as a stand alone unit, which obviously doesn't offer as much value, but it is still a decent buy since a similar pair of Sony headphones, without force feedback, would run $60 or more.

AMD Zone heeft een K7 FAQ in elkaar gedraaid, errug handig als je de specs van de K7 nog eens op een rijtje wilt zien. Bijv. dit punt over de verbeterde 3DNow! instructies:

A: Yes. Nineteen new Single-Instruction, Multiple Data (SIMD) instructions have been included bringing to total to 40. The new instructions will help with integer and cache performance. Creative Labs CD-RW 4224 review

Het volk bij GA-Source heeft een review van de Creative CD-RW 4224 CD-Rewriter op het net gezet. De normale lees snelheid van het apparaat is 3,6Mb/sec (24x), recorden gaat op 4x speed en rewriten op double speed. GA-Source is positief over de performance:

Beyond my initial surprise at the quality of the CD mastering software, I was really surprised at the performance of the drive itself. I ran some of the cheapest crappiest blank CDs I could find through the Blaster CD-RW, and I got 0 coasters. Out of using about the same number of the same brand blanks in my normal CDR drive (a Panasonic/Matsushita SCSI 7502), I would have expected at least 1 or two coasters. Especially with blank Maxell or JVC media, I generally tended to get as bad as 1/2 of my total burns as coasters. With the Blaster, none at all. With more premium media, as I have generally had to use, I also experienced no headaches.

Ars Technica heeft een artikel gepost waarin nogmaals de info wordt samengevat die de afgelopen dagen over de K7 bekend is geworden:

The take? This processor looks like it's gonna be a winner, and then some. Looks can be deceiving, however. We wouldn't be proper reporters if we didn't highlight the fact that AMD needs this success to survive. It wouldn't be right to fail to mention that investors are angry, the media is hungry, and AMD is desperate for faith in its company. If AMD can deliver on the manufacturing side of things (something AMD has had serious troubles with in the past), we could be in for a great end to '99. If 500MHz represents the bottom end of this new design, the .18 micron fab that's forthcoming means that AMD should be able to stretch this processor long enough to actually make some money. Or so we hope. And man, that's a lot of 'if's, eh?

Turtle Beach Montego II Quadzilla review

Wemp! (?) heeft een review gebakken van de Montego II Quadzilla, een Vortex II geluidskaart met S/PDIF interface en quad speaker support. Hier heppie wat info over de geluidskwaliteit van de kaart:

The Quadzilla has damn nice sound, I really mean that. Everything was placed perfectly; even the few things that tripped up the MX300 were perfect. All in all on each of the speaker set ups it was on par with and maybe slightly ahead of the MX300. I am not saying that it was an incredible improvement, just a little crisper and a little bit more believable on the placement. Absolutely no complaints on the sound, all I have to say are good things here. This may be due to the custom driver set. Unfortunately I really have nothing to test the S/PDIF connector on, so I can’t comment on that, sorry. Ok, so nothing really bad here, the card is about perfect.

Bij AGN Hardware hebben ze een artikeltje in elkaar geknutseld waarin wordt uitgelegd hoe je je BIOSsen (mobo, videokaarten enz.) kunt flashen. Volgens mij moet je wel een hele erge Computer Idee lezer zijn wil je niet begrijpen hoe je je BIOS moet flashen, maar laat ik mijn vuile opmerkingen maar achterwege laten . Mocht je nog nooit een BIOS geflasht hebben, dan kan het handige info zijn.

Cambridge Soundworks FPS2000 review

3D Audio Immersion heeft een review van de Creative Labs Four Point Surround 2000 speakers op het net gekwakt. De speakers zien er best wel heftig uit, en zo te lezen zit 't met de geluidskwaliteit ook wel okay:

Music was on the same level as gaming. Playing songs from No Doubt (New), Sarah McLachlan, Orbital, Enigma, and other artist, I felt that I covered the range of frequencies that you should encounter. I didn't notice any distortion of any kind playing at normal listening levels, and even at louder levels, distortion was at minimum. The speakers gave a nice feel to the music, and didn't sound muddy or shallow, they were warm and full sounding. Definitely speakers you can sit in front of for hours working on a paper. (Note: The digital CD spdif on the Live! made these speaker scream!) While testing, I ran the speakers through the test CD (the same one that Mark from 3DSS uses) and got these babies down to 35hz, which is great for the size of the sub, with no noticeable distortion.

Firingsquad heeft een target=new>preview van Diablo 2 op de site geplant. Hier is een stuk over de characters in dit spel:

This time around you will be able to use 5 new types of characters. The graphics of the original Warrior, Rogue, and Sorcerer will be seen as NPCs (non player characters) in the towns. Each of the five classes can learn 30 skills and spells to distinguish themselves from one another. Each character will have to reach a certain status before he or she is able to wield certain weapons or use certain spells. This time around while there won't be a class-limit; there will be a statistic limit for your character that can only be broken by a magical item. Blizzard hopes that the characters are balanced enough so that a wide-variety will be used to create a longer duration of entertainment (and probably cut down on their imbalance e-mail).

3DHardware.net heeft een editorial geschreven over de nieuwe PC99 specificaties, die o.a. de dood van de fossiele ISA bus moet betekenen:

A second specification that will be quickly noticed on a PC 99 system is the color coding that all the PC 99 motherboards must have. If you've ever owned or meddled with a Packard Bell system you'll feel at home, and I'm sure this will make life a little easier, or at least give some comfort to hardware newbies taking their first, daring steps into the internal world of their PC's. But ISA isn't the only aged technology slated to be replaced by newer ones with the PC 99 specification. Although not required, Wintel strongly advice the replacement of old COM and LPT ports favoring USB and IEEE 1394 (AKA. FireWire). Printers are the only devices officially allowed to use the old ports although system builders are advised to use the newer ports for connection of printers.

Geen Voodoo3 drivers voor Win2000 beta users

Slecht nieuws voor V3 gebruikers die een beta van Win2000 willen proberen: 3dfx is niet van plan om V3 drivers uit te brengen voor de officiële release van Win2000:

A call to 3dfx technical support confirmed that there are no drivers currently available because the OS has not been officially released. It was recommended that users download and install the Voodoo Banshee drivers, which the representative claimed could run the Voodoo3 on Windows 2000. Beta drivers for competitive cards are not out yet but are stated to be in development.

The drive works as a 6X-DVD ROM drive transferring 8.1MB/second with an average access time of 180 ms and as a 24x CD-ROM drive transferring 3,6 MB second with an average access time of 120ms. The drive feature all the standard function such as IDE connector, eject button, eject hole (used incase of power failure), headphone jack with volume control, a busy indicator (irritating thing that flashes all the time) and a CD audio connector that you connect to the soundcard or the Dxr3 card. The drive also has a digital audio connector (internal) that you can connect to any DAT player or soundcard that supports it, like the Live and LiveValue soundcard.

G400 tegen G400MAX

Bij Matrox Users is ook nog een review te lezen van de G400 tegen de G400MAX. Natuurlijk heeft de MAX een aantal dingen extra, sneller geheugen en processor, hogere RamDAC snelheid, maar is ie ook sneller? Hier kan je het lezen. Vooral bij hoge resoluties blijkt de MAX sneller te zijn:

f you are going to be restricted to no more than 1024x768 then there is not a huge difference between the two G400s at present. The reviewed units here are very late beta hardware which are almost definitely in the final production form and obviously the drivers too are late beta. We may see as drivers develop the gap widen in performance between them at low resolutions. To decide between the G400s you must look at cost, potential performance in your system and if you have a low spec system will you be upgrading in the near future in which case the MAX may prove a better investment due to its scalability. For the mainstream user the G400 will be an excellent buy but for those craving the ultimate speed, feature set, image quality and don't mind the extra cost then it's got to be the MAX.

Performance hit Bump Mapping

Matrox Users heeft een kort artikeltje over de performance hit van de G400 als het visueel schitterende Environment Mapped Bump Mapping gebruikt wordt. Bij een demo van M$ blijkt het gemiddeld 29% te zijn. Dat is nogal wat, maar het hangt grotendeels af van de hoeveelheid bump maps in een scene.

Another test of the performance hit taken when using bump mapping is the Microsoft's Earth demo. While this is simply a demo of a rotating bump mapped Earth it gives an indication of the maximum performance hit due to the fact that the whole scene is bump mapped rather than just selective objects as in Expendable. The test was to run the demo full screen in 32-bit colour with environment mapped bump mapping enabled and disabled.

Sysop Solutions heeft een review gepost avn Motherboard Monitor, het handige mobo temperatuur, voltage & fan controle proggie (en nog wel van Nederlandse afkomst ):

Well, all in all this is one solid piece of software. We have been using it here on our test systems and personal systems for an extended period of time now and find that the readings we get are very accurate. (Yes, we even took a digital Fluke meter to compare temperature and voltage results). The user interface is very pleasant and easy to navigate and the customization features are excellent. Installation was easy and it integrated well with our Windows and NT environments. The one gripe we did have was the necessity to download third-party software in order to activate the shutdown features (maybe we are just lazy here but we are hoping that it will come bundled in the package in future revisions).

Die kast (in beige) ben ik al eens eerder tegengekomen bij Funtronics. Ik kan niet echt zeggen dat ik die kleurtjes mooi vind, dan zien de iMacs en G3's er toch wel wat stijlvoller uit.

Apple in de verkoop?

Yahoo Computers heeft een artikel over geruchten dat Apple er op uit is om overgekocht te worden. Ze zouden Steve speciaal teruggehaalt hebben om het bedrijf klaar te maken voor zo'n overname. Er zijn genoeg redenen om aan te nemen dat het hier om verse koeiepoep gaat, Yahoo noemt er een paar:

The B.S. test Does this scenario hold up to a basic B.S. analysis? Actually, it does. With its QuickTime 4.0 technology, its upcoming Mac OS X, as well as with its G3/G4 Altivec multimedia extensions that will turn the next generation of Macs into true multimedia blockbusters (can you say digital video and MP3 audio?), plus a well-crafted technology alliance with Sony (the PlayStation 2, by the way, will blow you way with its graphics performance -- how does 60 million polygons a second grab you?) and its prowess at 3D, Apple could be the first computer company to really build a cheap crossover computer/game console/Web access box. An access box that would pump 3D digital video and sound like a bat out of hell.

But to work, those images and sounds have to be compelling and well-known. Enter Disney and Mickey Mouse or Time-Warner and Bugs Bunny. As Bill Gates knows from his acquisitions, you have to have the content as well as the means to distribute it if you want to win in the next century. Of course, there are many crash and burn opportunities for an Apple buyout by an entertainment giant. But it sures beats being a 7 percent solution the rest of Apple's life. I can't imagine Steve Jobs settling for that.

Ok, here's some of the details I'm going to describe about K7. As I'll show you, K7 has what we maintain is a superior 7th-generation micro-architecture. The other thing I want you to take away from this talk is that the K7 microarchitecture is very carefully tuned to deliver very high frequency operations to the market. [..] We'll be introducing 600Mhz by mid-June of this year, and that's in .25 micron technology, and we totally expect K7 to be delivering to market 1Ghz frequency next year. And also as I'll show you in the form of benchmarks at the end of this talk, that K7 delivers leading ... leadership x86 performance across all application bases, that is including floating point and multimedia.

AMD K6-X comparison

FullOn3D heeft een AMD K6-X comparsion in elkaar geknalt. In het artikel wordt de performance van de K6-2 met die van de K6-III vergeleken. FullOn3D komt tot de conclusie dat de K6-III (en -2) niet helemaal ideaal zijn voor games, bij office applicaties is het plaatje echter anders:

Once application performance enters the picture, things are a whole lot different. If you are equipping a machine for home office use or if you are just a casual gamer, the K6-III offers a significantly smoother experience than the competition at the same price or even clock speed. I especially liked the savage speed it unfolded under Linux - it may just be the ideal Linux x86 CPU available and if that is what you think about setting up I urge you to consider the K6-III as your engine - AMD would be smart to exploit that in marketing.

Tim Sweeney over trage Unreal OpenGL performance

Voodoo Extreme heeft een vraag gepost van een bezoeker over de slechte OpenGL performance van Unreal. Tim Sweeney geeft antwoord:

Theory 1 (Quake theory):
Hardware vendors are writing and optimizing their OpenGL drivers for Quake, and Quake uses small textures, so they don't spend any time optimizing their drivers for handling the huge amounts of textures that Unreal uses in order to improve graphical realism.

Theory 2 (historic code theory):
Hardware vendors base their OpenGL code off the source code SGI provided them, and that code is very inefficient at handling texture changes and state changes.

Theory 3 (general purpose equals slow theory):
OpenGL has a ton more options for texture formats, memory layouts, etc than OpenGL and Glide, so hardware vendors don't have time to optimize for all of those cases, whereas they can for Glide and Direct3D.

Theory 4 (Sweeney sucks theory):
Tim's OpenGL code sucks (judge for yourself, it's available on http://unreal.epicgames.com).

Theory 5 (Nobody focuses on OpenGL theory):
Most games use Direct3D so hardware vendors put most of their optimization effort into their Direct3D drivers instead of their OpenGL drivers. Other than theory 4, I don't have firsthand knowledge of the code involved, so it's not really clear to me why OpenGL drivers are slower than Direct3D drivers on the same card. But I guess it's combination of all those things.

Spinning at 7200 RPM, it is Quantum's second model to use giant magnetoresistive (GMR) heads to achieve higher areal density. The Fireball Plus KX has an average seek time of 8.5ms and comes in capacities of 6.8GB, 10.2GB, 13.6GB, 20.5GB, and 27.3GB. It uses the Ultra ATA/66 interface and incorporates Quantum's Shock Protection System and Data Protection System, as well as 224-bit on-the-fly double-burst error correction. The new drive is currently shipping for OEM qualifications, but it will be in volume production by the end of June. The estimated price for the 27.3GB drive is $399. Quite honestly, games running in 32-bit just look better and the majority of hardcore gaming enthusiasts may be willing to take a 15-20% performance hit if it enhances the overall image quality over running in 16-bit. And there are more and more games out there today with support for 32-bit rendering. Frankly speaking, it's a feature almost all 3D-accelerators being developed today will offer and 3Dfx is one the only technology companies left that hasn't supported it yet.

Guillemot Maxi Gamer Xentor TNT2 review

Bij PC Benchmarks vind je een review van de Maxi Gamer Xentor TNT2. Het ding draait op 135/166MHz en dat is weer iets hoger dan de meeste vanilla TNT2's. Helaas heeft PC Benchmarks het (nog) niet gewaaagd om de kaart te oc'en, dus dan maar dit stukkie uit de conclusie:

If you have a low end CPU, but plan to upgrade to a faster one within the next 6 months or so, I'd say that the Maxi Gamer Xentor would be a fantastic purchase. The quality of the images is terrific (you'll especially appreciate the difference if you're looking at at a Rage Pro or a Riva128 right now).

If, however, this is going to be your only upgrade for a while, and every dollar counts, then you have more of a decision to make. If you don't have a 17" monitor or larger, you can probably save some cash and go with a card like the Xpert 128.

PowerMac G3-400 review

Gamespot heeft een 400Mhz G3 gereviewed. Uiteraard willen wij pc gebruikers allemaal weten of zo'n blauwe doos op 400MHz nou sneller is dan een vergelijkbare PII:

Running ZD's MacBench, this G3 was solid across the board, and the Rage 128 rips through MacBench's graphics tests. Turning to games, we ran MACQUAKE's three TimeDemos and compared the results to the RIVA TNT-based STB Velocity 4400's QUAKE numbers (in our March issue). We tested the Velocity 4400 on a Pentium II 400MHz with 128MB of system memory, so the test systems are comparable. Unfortunately, MACQUAKE only runs at 640x480, which these days is pretty low-res, but G3 posted an average of 65.8fps. The Velocity 4400, on the other hand, running at 800x600, posted a frame-rate of 74.5.

Tja, Quake is natuurlijk ook niet helemaal de ideale manier om een Mac te benchen...maar ja, het gaat hier om een review van Gamespot.

Diamond Viper V770 Ultra review

Planet Riva heeft een review van de Viper V770 Ultra op z'n site gedouwd. De review heeft errug veel benchmarks (Q2, Q3, Kingpin enz.). Nadat ik die allemaal doorgeploegd had, kwam ik ook nog een stukje over het overklokken tegen:

The Viper V770 Ultra's default clock speeds are a core of 150MHz and memory of 183MHz. As I stated in the introduction, there are no gurantees when it comes to the how high a particular card can be overclocked. While I was able to run all the benchmarks for this review at overclocked speeds of 175MHz/200MHz, I reached 179MHz/210MHz successfully benchmarking GLQuake, but Quake 2 caused the system to lock up. These charts show the percentage gain in frames per second by overclocking the Viper V770 Ultra from 150/183 to 175/200. In lower resolution modes such as 640x480 and 800x600 the gains were minimal. At higher resolutions, overclocking started paying off with increased performance. However, the gains are dependent on amount of the stress a benchmark is putting on the system as shown by the results of the Quake 2 demo1 versus the Quake 2 crusher. The charts also indicate that overclocking provides better results when running in higher resolutions and/or 32-bit color.

George Broussard (3D Realms pipo) heeft op het 3D Realms message board een reply gepost op een thread over interactiviteit (omgeving slopen enzo ) in Duke Nukum Forever. Allereerste de vraag:

Sadly, I do have to report that the Unreal engine does have problems with interactivity. I know that is one thing that would make the game much more fun than most first person shooters. Currently, Unreal only supports interactive environments with the use of "meshes." So, it is possible. However, these meshes are a big hog on system resources. Therefore, I wouldn't expect too much in the form of interactivity, unless 3Drealms makes some changes to improve this. I know I hope they do . We've done so. DNF is the most interactive FPS game I've ever seen as it stands right now. Some is done with meshes. Some with world brushes. But we have god-like control over both and it leads to "emergent" gameplay the likes of which you've never seen .

That's a large part of what we spent our first 6 months doing with Unreal. Making it more flexible dealing with interaction. The last 6 months have dealt with character systems and interaction.
