The first thing you notice when you start a race in Re-Volt is that your view of the world is from the bottom up. And, dare we say it, the world has a nice shapely bottom. The feel of being in an environment made for creatures much larger than you adds a nice feel to the game. Back in the days of RC ProAm, and more recently with the Micro Machines games, you felt like you were racing a tiny car. Re-Volt turns the whole concept on its head by making you feel like you're driving a normal car in a huge environment. Whether you're slamming into a basketball, driving under a car, or rocketing off a curb, you feel immersed in a world made for giants. We spent twenty minutes just driving around bouncing against a basketball and enjoying every second of it!

The second thing you notice is the excellent physics. They feel much like a real RC car! RC cars have rocket-like acceleration, tons of grip, and tremendous agility. All of these aspects are captured in Re-Volt. If you've driven an RC car, you know how easy it is to spin out and flip due to driving such a light vehicle. Re-Volt captures this aspect perfectly as well! Good job there, Iguana!

The third thing you notice is how nice the graphics are. Iguana made heavy use of reflective surfaces when designing Re-Volt. All racing games nowadays have that feature, but Re-Volt seems to do it particularly well. Some later levels have reflective waxed floors. We're looking forward to seeing those in action! The cars themselves have detailed textures, and the maps are both detailed, and as we said, large!

Tiberian Sun Q&A

Door Femme Taken, 15 juni 1999 22:480 reacties, bron: Tiberian Sun Center

Tiberian Sun Center heeft een Q&A'tje gepost met Aaron Cohen, PR manager van Westwood. Hier heb je 1 vraag:

Lionel: If harvester truces are on in multiplayer, then can a player send a harvester into a stealthed nod base and make its defences fire so the base is easily found?

Aaron: Base defense won't fire on Harvesters during a Harvestor truce. Also, vehicles won't uncloak cloaked buildings, so don't think about using a Harvestor as a scout either.

SAN FRANCISCO — Despite some jitters along the way, suppliers at a technology conference here reported that the infrastructure is in place for Rambus DRAMs to move into the PC market.

Die size remains a concern, suppliers conceded, but all of them maintained that neither the 10-to-25-percent die-size penalty nor a higher price tag should hamper the acceptance of RDRAM for high-performance PCs.

[...] Die size is the most critical handicap for Rambus parts and is not likely to see improvement soon, panelists said. For Micron, 128-Mbit Rambus parts are 20 to 25 percent larger than their synchronous-DRAM counterparts, said Jeff Mailloux, DRAM marketing manager for Micron Technology Inc. (Boise, Idaho). Samsung Semiconductors Inc. claimed a similar number, while Hyundai Electronics quoted 10 to 15 percent.

[...] Rambus' price premium over SDRAM was not seen as a barrier by panelists, who believe that PC OEMs will pay extra for the added performance. One example mentioned repeatedly was the Sony Playstation 2, which uses Rambus' memory architecture to drive its ultra-high-end graphics. Rambus remains more expensive than SDRAMs, but panelists refused to classify the two as competitors, saying they aim for different uses. As DRAMs enter a new age where different types of memory apply to different devices, high-performance parts are worth more, panelists argued, and Rambus' price tag should be irrelevant.

"Rambus is this nice, fast, sexy device. You want performance, you've got to pay for it. There is no free lunch," Tabrizi said.

Intel Camino release in twee stappen

Check it:

Intel Corp. will launch its Camino chip set in two stages, thus delaying its support for high-speed Direct Rambus DRAM by at least a few weeks, according to a number of Intel customers.

While a version of the Camino, or 820 chip set as it is officially known, will indeed ship as scheduled during the third quarter, industry sources said the device will support only 600-MHz Direct Rambus DRAM, the slowest speed defined in the Rambus memory specification.

A second, full-fledged Camino chip set supporting 600-, 700-, and 800-MHz Direct RDRAM will ship at least a few weeks later, and possibly not until November, according to Intel customers.

While it acknowledged the existence of two Camino "skews," Intel said the chip set schedule is still on track. An Intel spokesman reiterated "that the 820 ships in Q3. We're definitely going to hit Q3." He would not say specifically when either skew will ship.

Intel roadmap @ THG

Pentium III for Socket370 will only be certified for uni-processor systems and initially there won't be any Coppermine-variants with 133 MHz front side bus available for Socket370 and the supply will be limited vs. the supply of Coppermine for Slot1. This will change in the second quarter of 2000, when supposedly all Coppermine-Pentium III variants will be available for Socket370 as well as Slot1.

This guide provides some early warnings and precautions users should take when upgrading to Windows 98 SE with the USB devices listed on this page. Check to see if you have these USB devices before installing Windows 98 SE. Some of the problems can be solved by changing BIOS settings, and driver updates; however, some USB devices do not work with OpenHCI-standard USB controllers. In this case, a hardware upgrade to UniversalHCD-standard USB controller is required if users intend to install the USB device on their systems.

Israeli company Hypernix on Monday released via the Web a new application called Gooey that gives registered users a chat environment they can carry around the Web with them.

When a user visits a Web page, he/she will see the alias names of every other Gooey user who is currently visiting that site. They will also see a public chat room connected to that particular URL, which all Gooey users present may respond to. Users can also click on the names of particular users, giving them an option of opening up a private chat channel. Users are also able to turn the application off and surf in non-chat mode.

The company will make its revenue off of advertising through its interface and website. The Gooey site will also contain a list of the locations of the most active discussions going on on the Web.

Portable MP3 player van I-Jam Multimedia Corp.

Door Femme Taken, 15 juni 1999 20:518 reacties, bron: Yahoo Finance

Yep, weer een nieuw MP3 playertje:

SAN DIEGO, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- A new portable MP3 player, designed to play back music and other audio content downloaded from the Internet, will be introduced by I-Jam Multimedia Corporation at the MP3.com Summit which opens here tomorrow.

The I-Jam(TM) portable MP3 player, which can also play back music recorded from compact discs, is the smallest such product on the market -- three inches high and less than two inches wide -- and fits easily in the palm of the hand. The player, which will be available in a variety of colors, has a compact design that makes it easy to hold and operate and can be conveniently clipped onto a belt or worn around the neck or arm.

Audio playback is achieved by a postage-stamp-sized MultiMediaCard, a new memory technology from SanDisk Corporation. The MultiMediaCards can store up to 32 MB of information or about one hour of CD-quality audio programs. One 32-MB MultiMediaCard will be included with the I-Jam player and others will be available separately.

``The I-Jam player is the result of combining advanced technology with our vision of the future of digital audio products,'' said Doug Marrison, President, I-Jam Multimedia Corporation. ``It's small and simple to use, but it also provides high-quality sound for users who want to add portability to playback of their Internet or CD music collections.''

Through use of an accessory called Jam Station(TM), the MultiMediaCard records audio content in a manner similar to a cassette tape. The Jam Station, which downloads music onto a MultiMediaCard in less than 60 seconds, will be available in parallel and USB interface modes for use with Windows 98 or Mac formats. Future applications for the MultiMediaCard include the storage of video or other digital data.

The MultiMediaCards contain proprietary technology compatible with the Strategic Digital Music Initiative (SDMI). Formed by major record labels under the auspices of the Recording Industry Association of America, SDMI is developing a new technology standard for secure downloading of audio and other information from the Internet.

Asus gooit kloksnelheid V3800 TNT2 kaarten omhoog

- AGP-V3800 (Entry) - Pure VGA/Combat ; 16MB 7-8ns SDRAM - Default Core/Mem => 125/150

- AGP-V3800 TVR (Mid.Range-High) - TV-& VR-I/O -opt.Shuttergl.; 32MB 6-7ns SGRAM - Default Core/Mem => 125/150 up to 150/183 +

- AGP-V3800 TVR Deluxe (High Range) - TV-& VR-I/O + Shuttergl; 32MB 6-7ns SGRAM - Default Core/Mem => 125/150 up to 160/183 +

Asus V3800TVR vs Elsa Erazor III

The picture produced by these babies, is just as good as that on your monitor. Enough said. Reception was never an issue on the Infrared ELSA glasses, and in general I got the impression that the ELSA 3D technology was lightyears ahead of the ASUS. ELSA employ a technology which allows them to maintain the vertical resolution (and horizontal) of an image or game. This one feature alone has significant (positive) impact on picture quality. Once I had tried the Revelator, there was no way I could consider using the ASUS glasses anymore.

Elsa 3D Revelator Glasses review

Well, you can see that in 16-bit the framerate takes a ~33% hit, going from 45.6 to 31.4 FPS. Ouch. In 32-bit, the hit is a little less (although still rather high), about a 30% hit in FPS. Once again, this is due to the extra computing that must be done to ascertain the positional depth values of objects.

Western Digital AC29100 Expert harddisk review

The exceptionally low CPU utilization rate in UDMA Mode 4 (Ultra ATA/66) is a major plus for multi-threaded applications and multitasking. I have to mention also that the drive is exceptionally quiet compared to WD's Caviar drives leading to a sense of security that the drive is indeed well designed and crafted. Temperature also does not seem to be a factor as the drive remained an exceptional cool 80-84°F throughout the test period.

UltraATA/66 artikel

By increasing the burst transfer rates of IDE drives, Ultra ATA/66 brings the effective transfer rate of the system’s bus and a drive’s internal data rate into a much closer balance. Ultra ATA/66 allows system designers to provide greater system throughput, particularly for long sequential transfers required by multimedia applications. It is a known fact that host data transfer rates must exceed media data transfer rates or else performance is reduced because of additional revolutions due to buffer full/empty conditions on reads/writes.

S3 Savage4 drivers, benchmarks & S3TC pics

Door Femme Taken, 15 juni 1999 18:191 reactie, bron: Savage World

Brad found these at the Sparkle website: new Windows95 and Windows98 reference drivers for the Savage4, with version number 8.09.02. That's a giant leap from 8.04.xx, so that could indicate lots of things have changed. You can get the Windows95 drivers here, and the Window98 drivers here.

The MX3W continues AOpen's tradition of leaving overclocking avenues as open as possible with the supported, most unofficially, FSB frequencies of the board. The 66/72/100/107/112/117/121/125/127/130/133/136/140/145/155MHz FSB settings can come quite in handy if your Celeron can't seem to handle one or more of the higher FSB frequencies. Specifically, the 72MHz FSB setting can be considered a faster version of the 68MHz "turbo" setting that found its way onto most motherboards, the same goes for the 107MHz setting and the 121/125MHz settings as well. The board is jumperless, and the revision AnandTech tested supported clock multipliers in the 3.0x - 8.0x range however clock multiplier support isn't a big issue anymore with Intel processors now that all Intel CPUs are multiplier locked.

The jumperless setup is a function of the Award BIOS utility that is part of the board's 802AB FWH (Firmware Hub). The BIOS used on the motherboard is the updated revision 4.60PG of Award's popular BIOS setup utility, the latest revision does provide a cleaner operating interface as well as expanded options for configuration and system tweaking, definitely a plus for hardcore hardware enthusiasts. The board does allow the user to power on the system using a keystroke combination, or a click of either mouse button depending on the setting you specify in the BIOS.

BX Chipset Overklokken

SoftFSB and Hirobo's Turbo.PLL are two extremely hard-core overclocking hacks that involve hacking not the CPU but the BX chipset. Both of these mods give you the ability to tweak the FSB speed in very small increments: SoftFSB gives you software control of the FSB and the Turbo.PLL gives you hardware control. From a technical standpoint, I haven't seen anything this cool since the dual Celeron hack. Unlike Tom's B21 trick, this isn't something you'll stumble across by reading a PII datasheet. The folks responsible for these two hacks had to do a lot of research, and they really had to understand system clocking and the intricacies of the BX chipset.

Windows 98 Second Edition review

I've had this new "SE" version of Windows 98 installed for about a month now, and overall it runs well. Before this update came out, I was still using the OSR2 version of Windows 95. The original version of Win98 didn't really offer anything above what Win95 OSR2 had so I held off on the upgrade. This new SE version does however have useful features like ICS (Internet connection sharing), Direct X6.1, IE5 and some new drivers. The install time of Win95 is barely 10 minutes compared to Win98's 30 or so minutes of install time. The offset for this increase in time is that Win98 will be ready to use when it's done. Win95 on the other hand, requires updated motherboard drivers, drivers for nearly every peripheral, Direct X6.1, IE5, Wingate, Winsock 2, the DUN updates, and a slew of other updates and additions just to bring everything up to date.

OC horror: gewonde PIII @ HardOCP

Oorzaak: waarschijnlijk beschadigde L2 cache chips:

Out of the box from Dallas Memory, the processor ran at 558MHz at default voltage with no problem. Since my jacking around with it, I cannot get it past 4.5x117, and believe me

I have tried just about everything me and a few others can think of. I really do think we torched the L2 because if we bring the L2 latency up to 10 or 11, the processor still functions at 558MHz. Not extremely stable but at least it will again boot Windows... Lesson to be learned here? Don't fix it if it aint broke. Just smoked my own MHz greedy ass in the name of living on the edge. Guess that goes to show that if you live on the edge, you are bound to fall off sooner or later. Welp, glad it was not a PIII-550.....

Overklokken is gevaarlijk .

Soldier of Fortune Q&A

I heard that Soldier of Fortune is using a new engine with Target spots on the characters. Is this true and if so, how does it work and how does it look like?

Raven is using a heavily modified Quake II engine that has been upgraded with Raven's revolutionary new GHOUL rendering system. GHOUL allows for location based damage on 26 different "gore zones" on each enemy and player model. GHOUL's advanced physics model makes this damage system possible and allows pinpoint accuracy with the game's weapons. For example: Utilizing the sniper rifle (one of the 12 weapons in the game), you can shoot the sunglasses off an enemy's face at maximum range without injuring him. It's pretty amazing... Uiteraard gaat 't over A3D support in SoF:[/break] Do you think the impact of 3D audio in this particular title makes it a better game? If so, in what specific ways?

There's NO DOUBT in my mind that 3D audio will make Soldier of Fortune a better game. The 3D audio places the gamers in realistic gun battles, with bullets zipping by and carnage developing all around them. It makes you a part of the action, instead of a spectator.
