Linux verboden in Austrialië?

Did the drafters of Australia's new Net censorship legislation ever imagine that their rules might ban Linux? After all, the Linux source code has quite a few instances of the word "fuck" sprinkled throughout, mostly as commentary about problems with software. Can an operating system be considered unsuitable for minors?

Using grep -- the powerful Unix search command -- to go through a recent version of Linux, I came up with some comment lines and error messages that were clearly intended as the sort of coarse humor engineers of all sorts engage in. Some examples:

./drivers/block/cmd640.c:16: * These chips are basically fucked by design
./fs/ufs/ufs_super.c:184: printk("ufs_read_super: fucking Sun blows me\n");
./lib/vsprintf.c: * Wirzenius wrote this portably, Torvalds fucked it up :-)

The Linux port of Opera will be built on the new and redesigned Opera 4.0 code. We have had Troll Tech write the entire front and user interface in Qt, the leading toolkit on Linux, which promises a very fast browser, indeed. The UI is already working and has been demonstrated, albeit with limited functionality, on the Linux World Expo in San Jose. Currently, we are pulling together the strings in the new formatting engine and the new ECMAScript module, and will proceed to integrate that with the UI when things are getting reasonably stable. So you, the Linux user, should have the latest version of our code along with the Windows user.

Elsa Erazor III TNT2 review

For an asking price of $185 (if you look hard enough), ELSA's TNT2 offering does indeed stand out of the crowd if (and we mean 'IF') 3D glasses are your thing. According to ELSA, their 3D REVELATOR "turns your flat 3D game graphics into lifelike Stereoscopic 3D for the ultimate in immersive gaming". We're not totally convinced but D3D (via DirectX 6.0 support) games did look the part (currently there's no OpenGL support). More so than with any other vendor's 3D glasses. There was little noticeable flicker and the LCD shutter glasses stayed at a consistently high refresh rate. Whilst not of any 'technical significance', ELSA's glasses wrap around less than ASUS's, thus making them more comfortable to wear for pro-longed periods of gameplay. And just because these REVALTOR glasses happen to be infrared and sans a cable don't go wearing them outside either....

3DLabs demonstreert geometrie acceleratie in DX7

3Dlabs today provided the first public demonstration of accelerated geometry and lighting using Microsoft's newly-enhanced DirectX 7 application programming interface (API). The demonstration used the 3Dlabs Oxygen GVX1 board that provides high-speed geometry and rasterization acceleration on a single AGP card and included a demonstration of a highly-detailed flight simulator written by Simis, the well-known game developer. The demonstration showed that applications with complex geometry run up to three times faster due to the increased polygon throughput made possible by hardware geometry acceleration.

NVIDIA(TM) Corporation (Nasdaq:NVDA - news) announced today the availability of a new set of software drivers for the RIVA TNT and TNT2 3D processors that are specifically optimized for AMD's K6®-2 and K6-III CPUs. With the new software, NVIDIA's 3D graphics processors deliver up to a 40% increase in performance as measured by leading industry benchmarks and real-world games. The new drivers show a significant performance gain in both Microsoft® DirectX(TM) 6.X and SGI OpenGL® applications.

``We have been working very closely with AMD to extract every possible ounce of performance with 3DNow!,'' said Dan Vivoli, vice president of marketing at NVIDIA. ``Our goal to be the best 3D processor for all PC platforms is supported by our dedication to deliver continuous improvements to both our hardware and software partners. RIVA TNT2, along with these new drivers, now brings unequaled graphics performance and visual quality to AMD users.''

The new drivers, available for download today, also include enhancements that maximize AGP performance in AMD systems. These improvements increase AGP texturing performance, which allows large textures to be transferred from system memory directly into NVIDIA's graphics pipeline. The new drivers also include a number of quality related enhancements and are designed to be compatible with future NVIDIA graphics processors.

Half-Life Opposing Force preview

In Half-Life: Opposing Force (Op For), you'll be playing as a soldier -- one of the grunts you so frequently had to challenge in the original game. "In Op For, you play as one of the soldiers sent to clean up the mess at the Black Mesa facility," says Gearbox Software's Chief Game Designer, Randy Pitchford. But, you quickly find that there is more to the situation than you were originally told, as a "new alien" race begins infesting your base. In addition, G-Man, the mysterious brief-carrying man from the original is back, and is trying to manipulate you as well.

An alternative option towards increasing the TNT2 speed would be overclocking. I have tried to overclock in all kinds of configurationsand concluded that the Magic TNT2 is not a very good card to overclock. The highest i have reached was a 166/166 MHz configuration. However, while running 3DMark it resulted in errors. This is a bit strange considering that the card is cooled with a fan. Other companies bring us TNT2 cards with no fans at all and they are capable of doing 166/166 Mhz. However, this is not a biggy. It would only bring you one, maybe two frames per second more in a game.

Abit BX6-II review @ Glide Underground

Dat-ie zo goed is?:

ABit has a long history of producing boards that have exceptional quality, and the BX6 Revision 2 is no exception. Its overclocked stability is next to none in the computing world. The BX6 Rev 2 has got to be one of the best boards on the market, if not the best. Data buffers are server level chips that make the memory much more stable when using all of the banks. It is in the reference design for BX boards from Intel, but due to cost most companies do not implement them. I have absolutely no complaints relating to Abit's BX6 Revision 2 motherboard. The factthat my overclocked Celeron 300 crashed about 70% less when using it in this motherboard alone is enough to make me go out and buy it.

Rambus DRAM artikel

As I said, Daikatana will feature a much-enhanced Quake2 engine, featuring such delights as Radiosity lighting, Translucency, Snow, Fog and Rain effects, Colored Lighting, 16 Bit Color and Unique palettes for each episode. The action will be viewable from multiple camera anglens, too, including the popular chasecam. The game will also feature a 'Use key' which seems to have become popular again, since its hayday in Doom. In-game cinematics, ala Blood2 and Shogo will also be included to advance the plot although it is currently uncertain how and when these will occur. Despite the relative size and high volume of content in the game, Ion Storm are adament that the game will ship on just one CD. This is largely due to MP3 compression technology and such, meaning that all character interaction can take place in full voice audio. Not only that, but a powerful level editor will be included.

Nieuwe Mac Unreal

** Note there is a bug in 224b1 that causes extreme slowdowns in RAVE when a visible player is wearing the shield belt - this will be fixed in a small (100k) 224B2 update that will be released in a day or two. The B2 update will require the full 30MB 224b1 update. ***

The 224b1 update adds support for 224 and 225 PC servers in network games, and has the new in-game server browser. It also has many internal changes and bug fixes. The update works with any version of Unreal. We plan to post a segmented version soon (three 10mb segments), but we're still trying to figure out exactly how to do that so it works with everyone's browser & version of Stuffit.

Alpha P125C cooler review

How does the Alpha combat the heat situation? Well, when you get the box you will see. The heatsink is huge, and very well designed, allowing heat to be transferred from the core of the CPU to the heatplate to the heatsink. This is one reason why effective use of thermal grease is important. Air bubbles between the thermal surfaces can heat to extremely high temperatures, cancelling the effect you are trying to accomplish.

As you will see in the results section, the Alpha does an excellent job at keeping the core under 90F degrees, even at 560MHz (no L2). I was able to POST at 600MHz (150MHz FSB!!!) but Windows wouldn't finish loading. I am still contemplating a voltage tweak...

The main point is CPU core cooling is not where you are going to encounter a problem in your overclocking adventure, thanks to the Alpha. I was not able to get my CPU over 32C (89F), so heat should not be a big issue.

* Powerstrip 2.50.03: Under NT 5, the PowerStrip assumes that the display driver works properly with Windows 2000 (some don't), and that the driver is lying if it reports support for DDIGammaRamp (some do). If the first assumption is wrong, a fix is already designed into the program - refer to the Release Notes for details. If the second assumption is wrong, this can also be corrected but there is little reason to do so as the PowerStrip's DirecDAC routines are generally faster that the Windows API equivalent.

* Performance Tuner 1.00.01: Like the PowerStrip, the Performance Tuner assumes driver compatibility and benefits from the same fix if compatibility problems are encountered. A bug when running Windows NT 4.0 has also been squashed.

* MultiRes 1.12: MultiRes now provides better support across a network, and properly enumerates available refresh rates.

Happy tweaking!

Duke Nukem Forever Q&A

>>1. Will DNF use larger than 256x256 textures? Yes, I know Unreal can do this - my question is "will DNF _use_ it"?

Maybe. Right now we're very happy with the texture sizes/look of the game.

>>2. How about stencil-buffer shadows? If so, are you planning to emulate it on cards without this feature, like Voodoo3?

Maybe, but only on cards that support it. Doubt we'd emulate it for other cards.

>>3. Which LOD is better - Unreal's (v224+) or MRG? What is the difference beetwen them? MRG is perfect. We've had it in for several months before anyone else out there announced LOD for their games. We're very happy with it. I doubt either MRG or Unreal's LOD is significantly better than the other, but we haven't evaluated them.

>>4. Is UnrealEd written in Visual Basic? Will DukeEd? Isn't too slow language for 3D editor?

UnrealEd is fine. It is written in Visual Basis which makes it a pain to deal with but for the end users, it will be fine.

>>5. Is DNF up-to-date with Unreal's engine updates?

Nope. We broke off after v220 due to delays in getting be code drops. We just couldn't wait any longer. but considering we've added skeletal/bones based animation, infinitely (and I mean infinitely) more control of moving brushes and tons and tons of other interactive thigns, I think you should ask wether Unreal is up-to-date with DNF

>>6. Will music be in UMX-like format or pure CD audio?

Neither. We'll likely go with some sort of streaming wav files for the music.

>>7. What happened to your Quake2 src copy? It's useless now?

All gone.

George Broussard

Gamasutra over DirectX6 bumpmapping

Door Femme Taken, 7 juni 1999 15:550 reacties, bron: Gamasutra

Gamastra heeft een artikel gepost genaamd "the Ups and Downs of bumpmapping with DirectX6".

You may be asking, "I’ve never used a modeling package – what is bump mapping?" First, I should explain that the way bump mapping is implemented under DirectX 6 is not what purists would call "real" bump mapping. If you asked Jim Blinn to tell you about bump mapping (and he would know, as he invented it), he would likely tell you it’s different than what I’m about to present. Blinn would tell you that bump mapping adds surface detail (bumpiness) to objects in 3D scenes, without adding more geometry than already exists. It does so by varying the lighting of each pixel according to values in a bump map texture. As each pixel of a triangle is rendered, a lookup is done into a texture depicting the surface relief (a.k.a. the bump map). The values in the bump map are then used to perturb the normals for that pixel. The new bumped-and-wiggled normal is then used during the subsequent color calculation, and the end result is a flat surface which looks like it has bumps or depressions in it.

Intel's Celeron processor was never meant to be setup in a multiprocessor configuration, in fact, it is completely disabled by default. So to get the processor to work in a dual configuration, up until now, you would have to solder wires to the processor, and hope you didn't mess anything up, otherwise your processor could be fried. Setting up a dual processor Celeron configuration become utterly simple, with the arrival of Socket-370 Celerons and Slotket adapter cards. Slotket cards allowed for all of the dual processor configuration mess to be taken care of already, and built into the adapter card with no modifications for the user, and since than Dual processor Celeron configurations have become almost mainstream.

In all fairness, Intel does have good reasons why they did not enable multiprocessing capabilities for the Celeron by default. Simply put, most Dual processor configs are used for servers, and servers eat up processor cache like no one's business. In comparison, the Celeron has 128K of Level2 cache, whereas Intel's server-aimed Xeon processor has up to 2 MB of L2 cache, 16 times more L2 cache. There have been reports and quotes around the internet that a Celeron-based dual processor rig can outperform a similar Xeon configuration, but simply it's not true. In any real software that is meant to be used on servers, like high end webservers or datacenter software, would run the Celeron over in it's tracks.

Unreal Tech Update: D3D verbeteringen

Since Riva TNT users are reporting that Direct3D is more than 30% faster than OpenGL on their cards, I've been spending some more time improving the D3D code, adding better support for video mode switching, and optimizing the texture management code a bit more.

Another motivation for the Direct3D improvements is the Matrox G400. I just received one, and it's an awesome video card--fast fill rate, great graphics quality, and decent texture management performance. The G400 has a great Direct3D driver, but their OpenGL is hideously bad.

One interesting new feature I managed to implement in Direct3D is recursive, fractal detail textures. With this feature enabled in Direct3D, you never see any individual texels, no matter how close you get to a surface. It's a really interesting contrast to the blurry bilinear filtering you see near surfaces in most games. Considering how fast current 3D hardware has become, there's no reason for games to reveal any individual texels anywhere.

-Tim

DeskTop Theater 5.1 speakerset review

With the arrival of DVD the interest of DD 5.1 has increased significantly and unlike those who own laser disc players or have a standalone DVD player in the living room, most computer owners doesn't want to spend $1000 on speakers. That's why Creative decided to put together a very inexpensive DD 5.1 system targeted at computer buyers, called Desktop Theater 5.1 (DTT 5.1). Featuring 5 watts and a dimension of 2.75" for each of the satellites, 15 watts and a dimension of 3.5" for the center channel and 15 watts for the subwoofer, the DTT 5.1 this system certainly has specs far below what most audiophiles would put in their living room. In this review we will find out if the system offers good sound for games, music and most importantly DVD movies. We will also look at how it compares with the AC-3 down mixing to 4 speakers that most software DVD decoders now supports.

Labtec LCS-2414 speakerset review

Satellites: To start off, these tiny little satellite speakers might be good when considering the $50 price tag of the entire speaker set, but they don't stand up to other sets. The drivers are backed by 10 watts combined to both channels, yet tend to over emphasize mid range frequencies. They lack the crisp high frequency response that is found in more expensive speaker sets, but we have to remember that this set retails for only $50 which is around the cost of a video game. Overall the satellites tend to over emphasize mid range frequencies and lack the crisp clean sound we have come to love.

Subwoofer: This little guy does its best to perform like a champ, but for it's size it just can't pump out the wall shaking bass. It's rated from 40Hz to 20kHz to provide a good range of response. When you start to look at higher quality subwoofers you will notice that the range rates from 20Hz to 20kHz, which is basically standard. When a sound hits 20Hz, it produces the really low bass that shakes. In terms of Hz, the lower it goes, the quieter the sound gets, but the more it shakes. So when you hear that super low bass that you can feel yet hardly hear or not hear at all, it's probably getting close to that 20Hz range. Overall the subwoofer is pretty good for the $50 price tag, but doesn't come close to other speaker systems which cost around $100.

It looks like the days of playing laptop games on an underpowered ATI Rage Pro LX are over, thanks to the announcement that S3 is will soon be shipping their new Savage/MX and Savage/IX 3D mobile accelerators. (Parts on retail shelves in September) The parts are the first .18 micron design and include excellent image quality, great 3D and 2D performance, hardware DVD playback, up to 16MB of memory support and a low price. This combination may see the chip replace ATI's current stronghold on the mobile accelerator market by giving them some competition that truly does succeed in mobile PC gaming. Don't be surprised if at the next LAN game, your friends will be bringing Laptops instead of their whole PC.

This is the Midtown Madness version of Capture the Flag in which you attempt to grab some gold located on the map and rush it to your hideout (if you’re playing a robber) or to the bank (if you’re a cop.) Having the gold invites intimate contact from others who try to wrest it away by ramming into you. Look for this to be a very popular option on the MSN Gaming Zone.

The graphics in Alien vs Predator are very good, but not Half-Life quality. The alien environment has a dark, futuristic feel to it. But that was one problem I had with the game. You have to spend too much damn time in special and infrared vision modes just to make it through a level. The 3D engine incorporates rain, reflective surfaces, in-game video, and dynamic lightingjust to name a few. But, a good thing about the darkness is it gives the game an atmosphere that is frightening to the player. You always have a feeling that an alien is going to sprint out of the dark and tear you to shreds. When walking through a level as a predator I sometimes just look at the motions of his appendages as I press for the shoulder cannon or any weapon.

Skywell Magic TNT2 32MB review

The card itself is set at 150 memory clock, and 150 core clock. That is the factory default, we upped the card to 160/160 noticing a slight performance in the frame rate, but only about 1 frame better. We then decided to go all the way, and we moved it up to 180/200, praying the card would still run. It did, until we opened up Quake and the computeer froze, forcing us to move down the speed. We then tried 170/180 where the card froze running 3d Mark 99 Pro. This lead us to the conclusion that this card is not very good to overclock, even though the powerful 32MB of SGRAM is running at a mere 150MHz. Even the Guillemot Maxi Gamer Xentor 16MB card runs at 166MHz, and that has no fan. Did I mention this card has a onboard fan? Well it does, and that is one good thing, the card kept pretty cool, even at higher clock speeds. You may have better luck with overclocking, but it pretty much failed our tests

Oke dat zuigt dus

Star Wars: Racer review

If you've seen Star Wars: Episode 1, you remember the pod racing scene: Anakin Skywalker racing in what looks like a floating sled tied to two rocket engines. Now, you too can feel the excitement of shooting through narrow canyons at speeds up to 600 mph, either as Anakin, or an alien nemesis of your choosing. You and up to 7 of your friends can compete on one of 8 alien worlds, where killing your opponent isn't only allowed - it's rewarded.

Creative 3D Blaster Savage 4 review

Waarom? Lees verder...

110MHz…Wasn't that the speed of video cards that debuted six months ago? Who dropped the ball here? Even relatively conservative Diamond Multimedia set their Savage4Pro-based product at a default level of 125MHz.

We can only speculate that in order to keep their profit margins high on a $100 product that Creative has cut a deal with S3 to take what we call the "slop yield" on the Savage4Pro. This means that the chips that fail to sustain 125MHz as tested by S3 at the fab plant are being sold to Creative at a discount price versus the Savage4Pros being sold to other OEMs.
