That said, there is reason for optimism. This is a brand new chip with brand new drivers, and we should expect some possibly significant performance boosts from subsequent drivers. In contrast, the Quadro4 is relatively mature, with several driver revisions presumably already grabbing the low hanging fruit of performance enhancements.
Still, from a pure performance perspective, the VP870 certainly doesn't leapfrog the Quadro4. We're given to wondering if 3DLabs may not have a faster clocked version of the VP series in the works (3DLabs does not disclose engine clock rates) as a way of keeping this series of parts competitive going into the fall. As it stands, the VP870 is competitive with Quadro4 750, but given that this part is a very recent arrival, we had hoped to see more performance coming from it. But perhaps of more interest to ET readers will be how P10-based consumer cards--due before year's end--fare against ATI's new hotrod, the Radeon 9700, and nVidia's GeForce 4 Ti 4600 and upcoming NV30. In addition, the VP line of workstation 3D cards will face stiff new competition from both ATI and nVidia later this year. ATI unveiled its Radeon FireGL X1 at this year's SIGGRAPH, based on the Radeon 9700 core, and there will undoubtedly be a "Quadro5" part based on NV30. If 3DLabs doesn't have a competitive response at the ready, the VP series will be at a decided disadvantage against these newer and more than likely faster offerings.
