HP Deskjet 995C, de eerste printer met Bluetooth

De Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 995C printer ziet eruit als iedere andere moderne inkjet printer. Een koelgrijze behuizing in dezelfde styling als de andere 900C series modellen. Het 399 USD kostende apparaat print 17 pagina's text per minuut en 13 pagina's in kleur. Toch is het geen gewone printer; het is de eerste Deskjet die de draadloze Bluetooth communicatietechnologie integreert, zo meldt C|Net:

Inside the DeskJet 995C is a small, built-in radio. When you turn on a Bluetooth-enabled handheld or laptop, it automatically searches for compatible devices within range, such as the DeskJet 995C. Once it finds the printer and establishes a connection, all you do is hit Print. To some readers, this may sound similar to infrared. However, unlike infrared, Bluetooth does not require a direct line of sight and has a slightly wider range. While we haven't had a chance to test the DeskJet 995C, we did see a demo at PC Expo in June. Used in tandem with a Bluetooth-enabled HP Jornada handheld, the DeskJet had no problem printing wirelessly, even on a crowded showroom floor.

heeft iemand al zo'n ding? de nieuwste linux kernel (2.4.7) ondersteund namelijk al wel bluetooth en ik zou graag willen weten of die elkaar een beetje lief vinden

Hèhè kan ik eindelijk bij de buren een werkstuk afdrukken zonder eerst aan te hoeven bellen of het wel uitkomt.

Dan is bluetooth juist niet leuk - duren de bezoekjes veel te kort . Dan is het leuker als jij eerst je hele PC mee moet nemen of zij eerst de hele printer naar jou toe .

Eindelijk weer eens een groter Bluetooth apparaat! Dat werd tijd.

Hopelijk gaan we er ook wat aan hebben. Bluetooth wordt (als het goed, of eigenlijk, fout is) niet door Windows XP ondersteund. Microsoft heeft inmiddels met wat anderen een eigen standaard in elkaar geflansd. Jammer! (Zie http://www.tweakers.net/nieuws/17863 ).
Laten we hopen dat ze door een overweldigend aanbod van Bluetooth spulletjes toch overstag moeten.

Helemaal mee eens iefje! Op de overwinning van IE op Netscape na het grootste voorbeeld van Microsofts koppelverkoop. En persoonlijk vind ik MSN een stuk slechter dan ICQ, dus er is geeneens een excuus voor.

Bluetooth is op zich een leuke technologie. Helaas duurt het veel te lang voordat het 'volwassen' wordt vanwege technische problemen. En mede heirdoor duurt het ook te lang voordat er toepassingen voor komen. Bovendien is de technologie vrij duur.

Nu dus maar wachten op de zoveelste strijd om de standaard: Bluetooth vs. de technologie van Micro$oft en consorten

Inderdaad, bluetooth is er al, en het kan gebruikt worden. In tegenstelling tot de versie Wi-Fi die intel beoogd. Bluetooth verbruikt ook vele malen minder stroom dan wi-fi.

Ik zie bluetooth en Wi-Fi niet als concurrenten. Wi-Fi heeft meer bandbreedte, grotere afstanden etc.
Bluetooth wordt de technologie voor binnen een kamer, Wi-Fi voor binnen een gebouw.

bluetooth is NIET voor één kamer hoor - bluetooth kan ook door ieder gebouw van redelijke grootte, en in ieder geval binnenshuis (waar het ook voornamelijk voor bedoeld is). Het is inderdaad wel zo dat WI-FI grotere afstanden kan overbruggen.

terwijl mij WiFi meer iets lijkt voor LAN's

Er is ook een grotere versie van Blue-tooth.
Deze ondersteund geloof ik afstanden van meer dan 100 meter speciaal voor kantoor ruimten. Ruim voldoende lijkt mij.

Kun je niet gewoon ff een linkje plaatsen?

ik weet niet wat een bruetooth interface kost, maar wat is nu echt het duidelijke nut van zo'n interface? Zowel je computer als je printer staan, lijkt me, op een vaste plaats. waarom kan je dit niet gewoon met een zg. kabeltje verbinden? dat ene kabeltje meer maakt ook niet zoveel uit lijkt me

ehm dat lijkt me toch wel vrij duidelijk. Ten eerste omdat een kabeltje lelijke rotzooi geeft. Ten tweede omdat je printer best wel eens op een andere kamer of etage kan staan (zoals bij mij thuis) en je geen zin hebt om een takke eind te lopen of om een fatsoenlijk windows netwerk aan te leggen. En om dan nog maar niet te praten over de mogelijkheden van overige PDA's e.d. waarvan je misschien ook wel eens wat wilt laten printen. Al met al genoeg redenen om het een aantrekkelijk product te maken.

Waar ik overgens wel bezorg over ben ik de vervuiling van onze omgeving door radiosignalen die ondertussen zo ongeveer overal vandaan komen (netwerk, mobieltje etc) en nu dus ook dat mooie draadloze PAN systeem. In hoeverre schaadt dit de gezondheid.. ook op langere termijn want voor mij is het plaatsen van een muis naast een bluetooth ontvanger/verzender voor 1 uurtje niet genoeg om aan te tonen dat het wel of niet schadelijk is voor de gezondheid.....

Dat zal wel meevallen. Er komen inderdaad steeds meer technieken in de licentie-vrije banden, maar die kunnen meestal gewoon naast elkaar bestaan zonder dat er bandbreedte-problemen komen. Zo wisselt Bluetooth 1600 keer/s van frequentie, waardoor het zonder grote problemen naast bv. WLAN gebruikt kan worden.

Heej, leuk om een reaktie op mijn eigen demonstratie te zien van CNET, die ik deed op de HP Expo in Barcelona
Het werkt inderdaad al verbluffend goed. Ik heb die demonstratie uitgevoerd terwijl ik door de expo-zaal heenliep, dwars door muren en mensen heen. Ook GSM verkeer vlakbij of in de omgeving (er waren zeker 5 tot 10 mensen permanent aan het bellen) was geen probleem. Ook de hotel communicatie-apparatuur was geen probleem. Enige nadeel was nog dat de snelheid niet optimaal was; hier wordt nog aan gewerkt. Is voornamelijk een software-issue. Je had de gezichten van de meeste mensen moeten zien toen ik wegliep tijdens het printen met de Jornada! Overigens zit daar een CF-card in, die zonder antenne werkt. De PCMCIA cards werken wel met antenne, de bedoeling is ook dat ze ongeveer van 100 meter diameter afstand kunnen werken.

Dat Bluetooth werkt geheel automatisch nietwaar? Dus geen codes om "in te loggen" bij apparaten. Hoe weten die apparaten dan, welke van de buren zijn en welke van jou zijn? Leuke toepassing, printen bij de buren, of bellen via je headseat à la miss Crofts met de telefoon van iemand anders...

Je kunt dit soort security prima op hogere protocollagen regelen.

Die "codes" en zo zijn er allemaal wel, maar daar hoeft de gebruiker zich niet meer mee te bemoeien (hooguit eenmalig, bij installatie ofzo). Door authorisatie kan worden vastgesteld of twee apparaten met elkaar een verbinding op mogen zetten. Je kunt niet zomaar je buurman ermee gaan pesten, als je dat bedoelt.

Lijkt me lache joh, gewoon een paar XXX plaatjes op je Palmtopje zetten en naar een computerbeurs gaan en uit elke Bluetooth printer foto's gaan uitprinten.... Terwijl je tussen de mensen staat

Wel grappig, maar helaas niet mogelijk. Ga er maar vanuit dat die printers op de beurs geen verbinding met jouw palmpje aan willen gaan. Je kunt namelijk niet zomaar elk apparaat met Bluetooth gebruiken, eerst moeten beide het eens zijn over het opzetten van een verbinding. Daarna kan er pas data verzonden worden.

Het wordt nu ook nog makkelijker gemaakt om de apparaten onder je arm mee naar huis te nemen, nog meer dieftstal.
