Software-update: AlmaLinux OS 10.1

De AlmaLinux OS Foundation heeft versie 10.1 van AlmaLinux OS uitgebracht. AlmaLinux is net als Rocky Linux ontstaan nadat Red Hat had besloten CentOS niet verder meer te ontwikkelen. Het OS is voornamelijk bedoeld om voor servertaken ingezet te worden. Waar versie 9 was gebaseerd op Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, wordt voor versie 10 CentOS Stream 10 code als basis gebruikt en is verder binary compatible is met RHEL 10. AlmaLinux 10.1 introduces performance enhancements, updated development tools, and improved security. This release delivers new compiler toolsets and updated module streams, along with improvements to debugging and networking tools. Container and virtualization support is enhanced with the latest versions of Podman and Buildah. Security is improved with updated SELinux policies, OpenSSL featuring post-quantum cryptography support, and newer versions of SSSD and Keylime.

Btrfs Support

AlmaLinux 10.1 also includes support for the Btrfs filesystem, which has already been available in AlmaLinux OS Kitten since early September. Btrfs support encompasses both kernel and userspace enablement, and it is now possible to install AlmaLinux OS on a Btrfs filesystem from the very beginning. Initial enablement was scoped to the installer and storage management stack, and broader support within the AlmaLinux software collection for Btrfs features is forthcoming.

Other Improvements

In addition to Btrfs support, AlmaLinux OS 10.1 includes numerous other improvements to serve our community. We have continued to extend hardware support both by adding drivers and by adding a secondary version of AlmaLinux OS and EPEL to extend support of x86_64_v2 processors.

We have also re-enabled SPICE support and Re-enabled frame pointers by default. We have continued our enablement of KVM for IBM POWER in the virtualization stack, and are enabling the CRB repository by default for new AlmaLinux OS installations.

Wacht: Alma wordt gestart als alternatief voor CentOS, niet omdat CentOS destijds werd gestopt, maar als stream verder ging, dus veel meer voorop lopen ipv een stabiele achterstand aanhouden. En nu gaan ze ipv de stabiele RedHat ook de voorop lopende CentOS stream volgen. Wat is dan nog het onderscheidende van Alma?

Ik zat er ook al op af te kijken en dacht klopt dat wel? De site van alma zegt iets anders dacht ik.

Het de nek omdraaien van het oude centos door ibm/redhat is achteraf een zegen, de reden om op debian over te gaan. Wat een mooi systeem.

Het is volgens mij iets genuanceerder.... Bij RedHat hebben ze destijds zowel fedora als centos anders opgesteld rond de onwikkeling van RedHat zelf. Dus ja, CentOS werd in het RedHat spectrum meer als voorloper opgesteld in plaats van de opensource delen van RedHat.

Dat Alma toen is opgestaan als vervanger van de oude CentOS in het redhat spectrum, als de opensource delen van RedHat zelf.

Dat nu Alma linux wordt gebaseerd op de opensource delen van CentOS in plaats van de opensource delen van RedHat zelf is naar mijn idee praktisch het zelfde: RedHat is immers ook de stabile versie/variant achter CentOS aan. Naar mijn idee staat AlmaLinux nu naast RedHat in plaats van dat ze er achteraan loopt. Ze loopt voor zover ik zie praktisch gelijk met RedHat. De tijd zal leren hoeveel Alma en RedHat van elkaar afwijken.

Red Hat staat niet meer toe dat ze RHEL clonen, dus ze gebruiken CentOS maar is het verder wel binary compatible met RHEL.
