Software-update: VMware Fusion 3.1 build 261058

VMware heeft enkele dagen geleden versie 3.1 build 261058 van zijn virtualisatieprogramma Fusion uitgebracht. Met deze applicatie kunnen met behulp van virtuele machines diverse besturingssystemen op een hostcomputer draaien. Daardoor kunnen bijvoorbeeld binnen Mac OS X Windows-programma's worden uitgevoerd, die zich via de Unity-functie als normale programma's gedragen. Er worden ook andere x86-besturingssystemen ondersteund, zoals verschillende Linux-distributies en Solaris. De lijst met veranderingen voor versie 3.1 build 261058 ziet er als volgt uit:

Hoeveel verschilt VMware Fusion van VMware Workstation? Het verschil tussen linux en msWindows is toch ongeveer het zelfde als het verschil tussen OSX en msWindows?

Bestaat er voor OSX ook een 'VMware Player' variant? of kan het de linux of msWindows versie draaien?

Dat is VMware Fusion.

Vrij weinig, qua core zijn VMware Fusion, VMware Player en VMware Workstation gelijk (daar zijn inmiddels ook nieuwe versies van uit: resp. 3.1 en 7.1; men deelt een aantal opgeloste bugs e.d.). Qua extra features is Workstation nog altijd wat uitgebreider, het heeft bijv. een hiërarchische weergave van de snapshots wat in Fusion volledig ontbreekt. Voor OS X is er geen versimpelde versie zoals Player, daar moet je het met Fusion doen. De Linux/Windows versie kun je uiteraard niet draaien omdat het op een low level manier in je OS ingrijpt en dat is bij al die OS's weer verschillend. De verschillen tussen de 3 operating systems is aanzienlijk, de kernel is bijv. totaal anders.

Wacht op goede vergelijking tests tussen deze Fusion versie en de huidige Parallels.
Bij de laatste tests zou ik voor Parallels gaan deze was op zaken als magic-mouse en minder cpu/mem gebruik/ efficiënter gebruik beter dan Fusion.

Wel lees je vaak dat men eerder antw /respons krijgt van vmware dan van Parallels.
Deze laatste zijn iets te stil volgens mijn lezen in forums.

Tevens overweeg ik Virtualbox Ofwel de nieuwe naam " Oracle VM virtualbox" 3.2.0 .
Heb het nu draaien op een Ubuntu host en ben zeker onder de indruk.
Het kan alles en werkt SUPER en dat voor noppes

Maar of het ook goed omgaat met de magic-mouse en specifiek apple zaken weet ik niet.

Kom toch weer terug op mijn 1e regel een goede test tussen alle drie zou erg cool zijn.

Als iemand ervaring heeft met de nieuwe Virtualbox op OSX (laatste versie).
Laat dan van je horen..

Parallels is tot dusver nog de enige die gebruik kan maken van de multitouch features van o.a. het trackpad en de Magic Mouse. Fusion kan dit vooralsnog niet maar op het Fusion forum heeft men al wel gemeld dat ze er naar aan het kijken zijn. Die gestures vind ik ook niet zo heel erg interessant eerlijk gezegd, het horizontaal scrollen supporten is voor mij al genoeg.

VirtualBox, Parallels en Fusion werken allemaal wel prima op OS X. Ieder heeft z'n eigen voor- en nadelen. Aangezien men voor Fusion en Parallels een gratis probeerversie aanbieden en VirtualBox gratis is moet het geen probleem zijn om ze even te installeren en te testen. Je kunt beter je eigen mening vormen op dat vlak.

Ben het inderdaad met je eens dat de multitouch opties niet de spelbreker kan zijn.

Mijn gedachten dwaalt naar een stuk dat ik heb gelezen over programma's die hun oorsprong op het Window platform hebben en dan omgebouwd worden voor OSX.
Waarbij een tal van zaken slordig worden opgelost, Native zou beter zijn..
Naar mijn weten is paralles alleen voor OSX. Wil natuurlijk niets zeggen..
Want Fusion is alleen voor OSX , maar hoeveel hebben ze van de win versie ? hmm.

Lees hier beneden over het OVF vraagstuk..
Als parallels dit niet ondersteund maakt dit je minder flexibel.

Ik heb wel eens aan pers de vraag gesteld hebben jullie ook osx in een VM op een osx host geïnstalleerd?

Men vroeg me het nut hiervan..Mijn gedachten is dat je lekker software in een sandbox achtig omgeving kunt installeren zonder je host OS te vervuilen..

En zo ook het install gedrag van een applicatie bekijken..
Op de site van virtualbox lees ik wel dat ze OSX install ondersteunen..
Wie weet gaat dat wel met parallels moet nog wat onderzoek doen

Parallels is er voor Windows en OS X (zie hun site). Het draaien van OS X in een vm is door Apple beperkt tot alleen de Server versie, dus niet de versie die je bij de gewone desktop/laptop Mac krijgt. Parallels en VMware hebben daar ook een technische beperking voor, je kunt alleen OS X Server dvd's/images gebruiken. VirtualBox heeft voor een andere aanpak gekozen. Hun 3.2 versie brengt OS X support (mits draaiend op OS X) waarbij men alleen maar waarschuwt dat je alleen de server versie mag draaien, er zijn geen technische beperkingen. Bijgevolg is dat je zonder problemen de Snow Leopard retail dvd kunt gebruiken maar het is wel illegaal om te doen. VirtualBox heeft het lef om dit te doen omdat ze ook wat minder te verliezen hebben dan Parallels en VMware.

Mijn persoonlijke ervaring is dat Parallels sneller is dan VMWare Fusion. Ik draai een Windows XP machine, via Parallels duurt het "opstarten" wel iets langer dan VMWare Fusion maar zodra hij is opgestart is Parallels beduidend sneller van VMWare Fusion. Ook gebruikt Parallels minder resources waardoor je mac-applicatie gelijktijdig met je virtuele machine kan gebruiken. Ik heb alles draaien op een 2009 24" iMac

Heeft iemand de OVF tool voor OSX al gevonden?

Ja, die zit verborgen helaas. Hij is alleen beschikbaar in de volledige versie, niet in de light versie (daar zit dus EN geen virusscanner EN geen OVF Tool EN niet alle VMware Tools versies in). Ik heb hier dan ook de volledige versie moeten downloaden en installeren. Je zult tijdens de installatie voor customise moeten gaan en daar de OVF Tool selecteren. De tool zelf is een commandline tool die je kunt vinden in /Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/ovftool. Zie ook het topic op het VMware forum: OVFTools 3.1. Beetje jammer dat er geen grafische versie van is, dat hij ontbreekt in de light installer en dat je 'm specifiek moet selecteren om te installeren. Hopelijk veranderd dat nog in de toekomst.

Dat is goed nieuws! Ik gebruik vmware op mijn linux systeem en draai daar windows 7 op. En dit was het enige nadeel, tot nu toe!

Dag allen,

Na wat input van een ieder (zeer gewaardeerd) heb ik de zet gezet en toch maar voor parallels gegaan.

Niet dat ik het nu perse nodig heb, want PPL heeft zkr gelijk je kan ze beide proberen en zelf zo beslissen.
Maar vandaag was de laatste iDays aanbieding dag en kon je bij verschilde zaken Fusion of parallels kopen voor 40,- euro ipv 70,- .. Dus voor 45,- (inc transport) klaar..

Waarom toch parallels?
De performance was belangrijk, vmware zegt dat ze het hebben opgelost.
Maar niemand heeft er nog over geschreven, en de update moet zich nog bewijzen.
Ook de usb integratie van parallels vind ik erg cool, je sluit een device aan en je krijgt de vraag waar hij actief moet zijn , (niet bekend hoe veel je open moet zetten zodat het werk)..
Tevens vond ik de documentatie site een stuk beter overkomen dan van vmware.
De xhtml lezen van de documentatie is erg goed..

Of ik nu 100% een goede keuze heb gemaakt weet ik niet.
Het is meer een gevoel keuze dan gebaseerd op feit..

Wel wil ik een belangrijk kwestie met een ieder delen (waarschijnlijk al bekend).
Ik maakte me zorgen omtrent te veel integratie van bv win in mijn mac.
Het moet niet zo zijn dat een evt virus andere bestanden kan infecteren.
Gelukkig vond ik vele opties voor het isoleren van een machine.
En gelukkig niet alleen dmv een knop ! Met dus alleen een optie aan /uit.
(geen idee hoe de usb integratie hierop effect heeft)

En wie weet koop ik over een paar mnd een macbookpro en zet ik het ook daar op.
Maar dan is de vraag mag dat qua licentie , of is er een 50% korting voor een 2e licentie.
Tja gebruik er maar 1 tegelijk wie weet kan het toch op beide licenties

Dat soort dingen kun je beter zelf testen, een review geeft een idee maar er zijn teveel zaken die bepalen welke in jouw geval de beste keus is.

Vanaf versie 3.1 doet ook Fusion dit waarbij er inmiddels ook al mensen zijn die daar niet blij mee zijn. Ze vinden het extra schermpje irritant. Zo even uit het hoofd, er zit een optie op de dialog om het niet meer weer te laten zien, dit werkt (again, zo even uit het hoofd) per device. In de changelog vindt je hierover het volgende:

Tevens vond ik de documentatie site een stuk beter overkomen dan van vmware.

De documentatie zit bij de software zelf, als een pdf. De site van VMware biedt echter wat additionele informatie, met name bedoeld voor geavanceerdere zaken. Het zijn dan ook meer hacks dan documentatie.

Belangrijke kwestie die nog wel eens over het hoofd wordt gezien. Het is en blijft Windows dus alle do's en dont's omtrent beveiliging blijven van toepassing. Virusscanners, malwarescanners, etc. installeren en gebruiken is aan te raden. Als Windows bij bestanden op je Mac kan komen, bijv. door het gebruik maken van de share mogelijkheid (dat je een folder op je Mac deelt met de Windows vm) dan is het ook mogelijk dat een besmette Windows vm die bestanden kan besmetten. Als Mac gebruiker zul je daar niets van merken omdat Windows malware niet op Macs werkt omdat het specifiek voor Windows is. Je zult hooguit wat boze Windows gebruikers krijgen die roepen dat je hun een virus hebt gestuurd indien je bestanden gaat uitwisselen. Je kunt in zowel Parallels als Fusion als VirtualBox sharing opties uitzetten waardoor de vm geheel op zichzelf komt te staan. Bij Fusion en VirtualBox is dat min of meer de standaard als je een vm aanmaakt hoewel Fusion nog wel de applicaties wil delen (kun je bestanden op je Mac in de Windows vm laten openen). Bij Parallels kun je zelf de keuze maken bij het aanmaken van de vm (heeft imo de voorkeur).

En wie weet koop ik over een paar mnd een macbookpro en zet ik het ook daar op.
Maar dan is de vraag mag dat qua licentie , of is er een 50% korting voor een 2e licentie.

Bij VMware koop je een licentie per Mac en bij Parallels volgens mij ook. Bij VirtualBox mag je het gebruiken zolang jij het installeert en gebruikt, eventuele andere gebruikers op dezelfde machine mogen er dan ook gebruik van maken. Dit ongeacht of je nou een zakelijke gebruiker of particulier bent.
