Software-update: Inkscape 0.47

Afgelopen dinsdag is versie 0.47 van Inkscape uitgekomen. Inkscape is een opensource en cross-platform programma voor het bewerken van vectorafbeeldingen. Het vertoont daarmee overeenkomsten met programma's als Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, Freehand en Xara X, maar het grote verschil is dat Inkscape met Scalable Vector Graphics werkt, een door het W3C ontwikkelde open standaard. De implementatie van SVG is overigens incompleet. SVG fonts kunnen nu wel in Inkscape ontworpen worden, maar kunnen nog niet ingezet worden om tekst op het canvas te renderen. Hieronder is een overzicht van de belangrijkste veranderingen, die in versie 0.47 zijn doorgevoerd:

• Timed autosave: no more lost work
• Spiro splines: an exciting new way to work with paths, fully supported in Pen, Pencil, and Node tools
• Auto smooth nodes: a new type of node that keeps the path as smooth as possible as you move it or its neighbors
• New modes in Tweak tool: pushing and jittering whole objects, scaling/rotating objects, deleting and duplicating using the "soft brush"
• Reworked, much more usable snapping system and a Snapping toolbar
• New path effects, including sketch, hatching, envelope deformation; effects can be stacked and assigned to groups
• A huge collection of preset filters in the new Filters menu
• New cairo-based PS and EPS export: improved quality, more features supported, fallback rasterization for filters and transparency
• Spell checker for text objects in a document
• Many new extensions: restacking, calendar, printing marks, cartesian and polar grids, interpolating attributes
• Optimized SVG code options, now with their own Preferences page
• Many other improvements, usability tweaks, memleak stops, and misc bugfixes

Anderhalf jaar ontwikkeling, het resultaat mag er zijn.

Met een beetje spelen met de settings kan deze soms nog vrij aardig 'normale' plaatjes naar SVG omzetten.

Leuk alternatief voor degene die meer van de andere grote linux toolkit gecharmeerd zijn (Qt i.p.v. GTK), Karbon - onderdeel van de kOffice suite. Persoonlijk vind ik geen enkele SVG editor lekker werken en de enige nuttige SVG die ik heb weten te maken was met een text editor.

De implementatie van SVG is overigens incompleet. Zo is er op dit moment nog geen ondersteuning voor animaties of SVG fonts.

Er is nog geen enkel paket that de volledige SVG standaard geimplementeerd heeft. Desalnietemin is Inkscape een heel fijn programma.
