Deze technologie zou moeten voorkomen dat DVD's illegaal gekopieerd kunnen worden. Afhankelijk van de wensen van de maker van de DVD, kan er ook toegestaan dat er 1 kopie gemaakt mag worden.

De afspraken zouden al zo vergevorderd zijn dat de technologie al in september ingevoerd zou kunnen worden. Helaas voor de bedenkers werkt de beveiliging alleen bij DVD-spelers die daarvoor aangepast zijn. Mensen die nu al een DVD-speler bezitten, hebben dus niets te vrezen van deze nieuwe vondst.

Intel en AMD hebben afgelopen vrijdag hun licentie-overeenkomst voor de vierde keer verlengd door nog 10 jaar bij te tekenen. In 1976 werd de eerste versie van dit contract opgesteld toen AMD de 8085 ging produceren. Twintig jaar later werd de overeenkomst gewijzigd, waardoor AMD de producten van Intel niet meer letterlijk mocht namaken. Volgens een bron die bekend is met de inhoud van het contract is er dit keer niet veel veranderd. Er zijn alleen wat nieuwe afspraken gemaakt over de manier waarop de royalties worden berekend en de productierechten zijn aangepast. Geen van de bedrijven wilde commentaar leveren op de exacte veranderingen, maar een woordvoerder van AMD beweert dat ze genoeg ruimte van Intel krijgen om de plannen uit te voeren:

The last deal, which was announced in January 1996, had some more fundamental changes, namely that AMD would no longer have a license to make direct copies of Intel chips beyond the 486 processor and that it would not use the same bus--which connects the processor to other components on the PC motherboard--as Intel's chips.

The current generation of processors--Intel's Pentium 4 and AMD's Athlon--can both run Microsoft Windows, but AMD uses its own chip design and bus. AMD got its start in the Intel-compatible world in 1976, signing a deal to serve as a second source for the 8085 chip.

"We're always happy to license technology in exchange for fair value," said Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy.

Volgens dit stukje op BetaNews lijkt het erop dat AOL zich aan het voorbereiden is om de strijd tegen .NET en XP tegen te gaan. We hebben al eerder gemeld dat het allang niet meer zeker is dat Microsoft en AOL hun samenwerking zullen voortzetten. Bovendien zal HailStorm een groot deel van de functionaliteit van de AOL client hebben. Uit uitgelekte documenten blijkt nu dat het bedrijf zich niet zo maar buiten spel wil laten zetten. Als het nodig is zullen ze het hele XP gebeuren gaan dwarszitten. De provider is zelfs bereid om een niet-Windows operating systeem te gaan ondersteunen, iets wat Microsoft niet fijn zal vinden aangezien AOL zo'n 30 miljoen leden heeft. Volgens BetaNews zou dit wel eens de grootste machtsvertoning die het internet ooit gezien heeft kunnen worden:

• Accept Assimilation: Partner with Microsoft to support their initiatives while gaining specific "carve outs" for AOL. This approach would not necessarily involve the OEMs.
• Make AOL the Default: Work with the OEMs to create a "Coalition" to ensure AOL is the default application and service for all online activity, and that AOL has extensive presence throughout the OS.
• Ensure AOL Properties replace Microsoft OOB: Ensure Netscape, Magic Carpet, Aim, etc.. are the default applications for online activities unless the AOL client is registered through OOBE.
• Replace the default Desktop: Partner with an OEM to replace the default desktop environment and default Microsoft functionality with a custom solution (e.g., xSides).
• Stall XP Deployment via OEMs: Encourage the OEM to keep ME until AOL can develop an appropriate solution for XP
• Stall XP Adoption: Until AOL can develop an appropriate XP solution, message to AOL members and the public that XP is “not ready” for broad adoption (i.e., has bugs, will not run AOL, will not run your existing software, will violate your online privacy, etc...)
• Think Different: Partner with an OEM to develop and launch a more esoteric solution such as an alternative OS or a modified MS OS

De veelgebruikte CD-brandsoftware Easy CD Creator 5 blijkt een slechte invloed te hebben op sommige Windows 2000 systemen. Na een 'complete install' doen situaties zich voor waarin Windows enorm traag opstart, of zelfs helemaal niet meer wil booten. Het probleem bevindt zich in het onderdeel Take Two, wat er normaal gesproken juist voor bedoeld is gecrashte systemen weer te recoveren. Fabrikant Roxio raadt gebruikers van Windows 2000 aan de 'custom install' te doen, en hierbij het onderdeel Take Two niet te installeren:

A small percentage of our customers using the Windows 2000 operating system have experienced some problems with Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum. There are two issues that we are currently aware of and working diligently to correct:

• A blue screen error and
• The computer takes an extremely long time to boot.

Both of these issues are experienced after doing a complete install of Easy CD Creator.

HardOCP heeft een uitgebreid stuk tekst geschreven over het MSI K7T266 Pro moederbord. Eerst wordt de layout van het plankje besproken; over het algemeen is deze goed, het is bijvoorbeeld geen probleem om grote heatsinks te plaatsen. Toch zijn er ook wat negatieve puntjes aan te wijzen, zoals het feit dat de videokaart behoorlijk in de weg zit als je geheugen wil plaatsen of verwijderen. Ook de opties in het BIOS worden doorgelicht voor men aan de benchmarks begint. De Promise RAID controller wordt aan de tand gevoeld met HDTach en het systeem in zijn geheel met 3DMark, SysMark en Quake3. Over het algemeen zijn de resultaten goed, maar één belangrijk probleem komt aan het licht. Het bord blijkt volkomen onstabiel als er meer dan één DIMM geplaatst wordt:

Here is one thing that I have not discussed that led to us testing five different types of DDR sticks on this board and another reason that this review was not posted weeks ago. My MSI K7T266 Pro will NOT OPERATE PROPERLY with more than one stick of DDR Ram installed. We get tons of random errors in the OS (either 98 or 2K) that make using the OS impossible. I worked for two weeks to try to isolate the problem we were having and tried about every different DIMM slot and stick combination known to man and could NOT make it work. Finally our buddies over at AZZO got us a 256Meg stick of DDR. We slapped it in and it worked fine. After that, we ascertained that the problem in fact lied with the board and not the DDR Ram being used.

I called a couple of the other reviewers in Europe that have reviewed this board and asked if they had the same problems and none of those reviewers confirmed having the same problem. Microstar was made aware of the problem from day one but never got back with us on fixing the problem or suggesting a fix for the problem or getting us a replacement board. Therefore, I have to lay out my opinion on exactly what we have to base it on...a board that does not work with two or three sticks of Ram installed.

OcPrices heeft een review geschreven over een 256MB PC2100 reepje van Crucial. Deze modules zijn relatief gezien erg goedkoop, zelfs als je de internationale verzendkosten meerekent. Hij wordt verkocht als CAS 2.5, omdat er volgens deze pagina nog problemen zijn met CAS 2. Tijdens het testen bleek echter dat het reepje in ieder geval op een Asus A7M266 moederbord makkelijk op CAS 2 kan draaien. De prestaties van het geheugen zijn zeker niet verkeerd. Met een beetje tweaken, maar zonder de FSB op te schroeven, wordt er 633 en 812MB/s uitgetrokken door SiSoft Sandra. Door over te klokken wordt dit resultaat nog veel mooier; op 146MHz 2-2-2 werd 692 en 890MB/s gehaald. Helaas laat men niet zien wat deze cijfers in de praktijk betekenen. Wel vergelijkt men ze met de resultaten van SDRAM:

By going from 133 MHz FSB at the default settings up to 146 MHz FSB with maxed out settings gave a jump in memory scores from 585/738 to 692/890 - or more specifically: a jump of 18% and 21%. And even by settling for the more conservative 2.5-2-2 at 147 MHz FSB gave a healthy boost of 14% and 16%.

As the memory scores at 146 MHz FSB are so much higher, it seems to be a better option to stay at that setting even though the CPU runs a little slower. The higher memory bandwidth will make up for the slowdown...
