Abit BE6 review

The layout of a motherboard seems to be less and less important with the ATX form-factor in use. The BE6 uses the standard 5/2/1 layout of most BX motherboards. The two ISA slots (one shared) are blocked from using full-length cards. Though I've not seen a full-length ISA card in more than seven years, they do still exist. The inclusion of ISA slots keeps this board from being PC99 compliant, though the back plate has the characteristic eye-gouging color coding of the PC99 spec. Unlike this board's big brother, the BX6R2, the BE6 has only three DIMM slots, allowing for a maximum of 768MB of RAM. The worst thing I can say about this board's layout, indeed, the worst I can say about the entire package is the placement of the power connector. It's located towards the back of the board, near the Slot 1 connector, meaning the power cords are often in the way of proper CPU ventilation. A minor annoyance, to be sure, but one that may cause problems for some.

An excellent package Abit has put together. This may be the swan song for BX motherboards as Intel's Camino chipset comes into the forefront of high-end PCs in a few months, but with the solidity of this board and the inclusion of some great new features, waiting for Camino or just building a new box is made much easier with the BE6.

It certainly has some issues, but I'd say this is the best board out there for overclocking and I'd stand by that. Nothing else quite compares to the BE6's stability at overclocked speeds, but if you want raw stability and aren't interested in overclocking at all, then this is just like another motherboard.

Here are some givens. Anti-Aliasing is a way to reduce the jagged effects of lower res gameplay (it's a patch). Obviously, the higher the poly-count, the better the image. The higher the res, the less need for A-A. Likewise, the higher the poly-count, the less need for A-A.

That being said, here is where we are. nVidia chose higher poly-counts and it sems that 3dfx has chosen higher? fillrates (the lack of speculative press leads me to question mark).

The most important advantage a player with a better graphics card has while gaming, is keeping the framerate higher in a dogfight-rocket-jungle-ambush. However, as long as the CPU (the life-blood) is bogged down by T&L calculations (around 25% of CPU usage whle gaming), you can kiss that advantage goodbye. The entire game will slow because the video card isn't getting the info to dump to the monitor. We know that CPU usage by AI and overall game complexity will increase. Therefore, stress on the CPU will increase, regardless of increased polygon counts. So the nVidia pitch is you can either spend $300 on a new video card, or $700 on an Athlon and mobo in order to give you enough free CPU horsepower for next-gen games.

If I can have 1024x768, with HIGH polygon counts, in 32-bit glory, without dropping framerates below 30fps, EVER, and especially without having to ditch my C366@550 and big money mobo (dual proc, dual SCSI), I will be a happy sumbeech.

Diamond Viper 2 press release

Diamond Multimedia Systems today unveiled its new Viper II graphics accelerator. Powered by S3 Incorporated's Savage2000+ chip and 32MB of on-board memory, Viper II delivers enhanced 3D performance, transformation and lighting functionality, digital video playback and sharp high-resolution 2D imagery. Slated for shipment in late October, Diamond Multimedia's Viper II, including a software bundle, is expected to carry a U.S. estimated retail price of under $200.

Based on S3's Savage2000+ chip, the Viper II graphics accelerator combines enhanced 3D texturing performance, 32-bit true color rendering, Direct3D/OpenGL support and 32MB of high-speed memory with high resolution support (up to 1920x1080x32bpp) and a separate 128-bit 2D engine to deliver a solid graphics solution.

Additionally, with S3's fully integrated geometry engine, Viper II is capable of performing all 3D transformation and lighting computations in hardware to accelerate next-generation content with 4-10X the polygon and lighting complexity of today's applications.

Diamond Multimedia's new Viper II graphics accelerator lets people enjoy the latest multimedia technologies. Viper II offers DVD hardware acceleration for cinema-quality playback that doesn't require a majority of the CPU's resources. Users can also view graphic images on a TV screen using the TV-output mode, including support for NTSC and PAL output formats in resolutions as high as 800x600.

Diamond Multimedia's new Viper II graphics accelerator comes with the company's InControl Tools 99, the customized utility suite that provides users with controls that enable on-the-fly optimization for desktop settings. Additionally, Viper II customers will include the company's own 3D Turbo Gauge allowing PC consumers and gamers to increase engine and memory clock speeds for optimum performance. InControl Tools 99 also features an Update Wizard, a tool that identifies the current versions of software on the user's PC and automatically prompts installation of the latest version via an Internet connection. InControl Tools 99 gives users the ability to customize and/or select pre-programmed preferred 3D settings for Direct 3D and OpenGL-based applications, as well as the ability to improve performance for individual games. Added features to Diamond's InControl Tool 99 shipping with the new Viper II graphics accelerator includes video output settings, color adjustments and TV modifications.

Microsoft maakt e-commerce plannen bekend

Under the plan, Microsoft will offer Web developers the ability to pull technology components from its MSN Web site. The company is calling these components "megaservices," which include an Internet identification and payment technology named Passport. The components will also include the LinkExchange system for exchanging banner adds, the Hotmail and Instant Messenger communication technologies, and Windows Update, a way of sending software upgrades and patches electronically.

Microsoft is reorienting all of its products around this new approach called Windows DNA 2000, in anticipation of the launch of Windows 2000, Microsoft’s revamped high-end operating system formerly called Windows NT.

Analysts said Microsoft, which pioneered easy-to-use Windows development tools with its Visual Basic product in the early 1990s, has so far missed a huge opportunity by not following the same strategy for the Web development market. The company's tool lineup includes scripting, component development, and other tools, but does not include a visually oriented tool for overall Web site development, analysts said.

Grand Theft Auto 2 interview

[Q] Based on the screenshots, GTA 2 gives you the same overhead perspective that GTA 1 did. How will the gameplay differ? What's new?

[A] While the basic game idea remains the same - a huge teaming city, you a member of the criminal classes, able to make money any way you want, a focus on trying to create police chases and so on - the way it has been executed is vastly different. GTA2 is all about gangs - you are not the only bad boy in town, there's a whole series of gangs carving up the city and it's criminal activities, you now interact with the gangs, earn their respect (by attacking other gangs, and doing jobs successfully for them), and avoid them when they hate you - this adds a whole new element to the gameplay - trying to manage relationships, and keep people happy (while planning their destruction when it suits you!), but everything else has been massively improved - the police are far more aggressive, and get support from the army, the FBI and swat teams in this, allowing for some spectacular firefights. There are loads of new weapons, including Molotov cocktails and oil slicks (along with the electric weapons featured) - this time, we can enough cars on screen and pedestrians moving around, especially on the PC version, to really make the city feel alive and busy, in the right places, and deserted and lonely in other places. Technically, the graphics, although retaining the core perspective (to replicate helicopter chase footage from LA and the UK), are vastly improved, with incredible real time lighting effects, amazing explosions and so on, while the audio is probably the most complex and complete people will have ever experienced in a video or computer game - it really is amazing. The AI is much better this time, with every citizen, criminal, mugger, car jacker (there's a lot about in this city), taxi driver and bus driver all having their own objectives, behaviour and ambitions.

The gameplay was good fun in the first game, but in this one it is literally insane at times, while several of the missions recreate classic scenes from movies, utilising new features to allow for roof top chases, for Mexican stand offs where you and your buddies in one gang attack another (or, if you're clever, you let them attack, while you watch, standing well out of the way), stealth based attacks on compounds, as silenced weapons, hearing and line of sight are now utilised, and articulated lorries, which you can use to smash road blocks...

The game is just far slicker and far more insane than the original.

Diamond Viper 2 info

Later on today, Diamond will be officially announcing their Savage 2000+ based Viper 2 series of 2D/3D accelerators. There should be two versions of the card, one with 32MB and another with 64MB of RAM. A price hasn't been determined for the higher end 64MB version but it's looking like at least $250. The 32MB version on the other hand is set for a late October release date and to sell in retail at approximately $200 (probably under). The graphics clock frequency hasn't been pinned down yet to a final speed but it should be between 160-175MHz for the 665M/texel per second fill rate. The 32MB of RAM is set to be clocked at 166MHz.

In a conference call with Diamond, we were also informed that their Savage4 Pro Xtreme (see preview) will start shipping at the end of this month. The retail price will be set at $99.99 (based upon a $30 rebate).

In other Diamond news, we were told that their follow-up product to the RIO 300, the RIO 500, will begin shipping at the end of this month as well. At $265, it will harbor 64MB of RAM for up to two hours of music, a USB connection and be both PC & MAC compatible.

The instant messaging software used by Freeserve subscribers will be interoperable with America Online's software. However, AOL says it will block access so that users of the two Internet services will not be able to communicate.

The U.K. ISP Freeserve this week announced that it is licensing instant messaging software from Tribal Voice that works with other messaging platforms, including AOL's Instant Messenger and ICQ as well as Microsoft's MSN Messenger Service.

But AOL is taking a hard-line stance on interoperability, demanding that other companies make agreements with the company or it will block access to its instant messenger servers.

"We will block anyone who attempts unauthorized access to our servers," says AOL spokeswoman Tricia Primrose, adding that Tribal Voice doesn't have an agreement with AOL "to preserve the security and privacy of our members."

Chip Testers RAM price editorial

What do you get when you have millions of angry customers storming your local Best Buys and Comp USA stores fighting for the new "free PC's"? Part shortages. Surely you've heard of the supply/demand price model - price goes up when demand increases or supply decreases. In this case, both are true. Manufacturers in Taiwan and surrounding countries have been ramping down memory production for almost a year now after the "depression" of last year. Taiwan also suffered a huge blackout in early August which left a majority of the country without power for two hours - in the process screwing the Taiwanese chip makers. An estimated 1-2% of the world's memory was lost because of that.

It may be considered unethical and illegal in most places, but apparently the memory manufacturers of the world have been very cooperative in their stand against operating losses. It is common to see rapid increases on the order of $10-$20 accross the board. Don't worry though - after demand drops down, which it inevitably will, these companies will be forced back into competition and the prices will fall...

Austin American Statesman over AMD

Atiq Raza, who was AMD's chief technology officer for more than three years, said recently that the company had made considerable progress in getting its design teams, its research scientists and its factory managers to work together more effectively.

"AMD has become a much more efficient manufacturing machine," Raza said recently. "It is on the same technology road map as Intel."

But it was Raza, considered by financial analysts as the most credible figure in AMD's senior management, who created the latest cloud of uncertainty. In July, Raza suddenly resigned as company president, chief technology officer and chief operating officer, stunning Sanders and the microprocessor community. Raza explained that he wanted to become a venture capitalist. But he also voiced some concerns about AMD's high level of spending, particularly on its new $1.9 billion factory in Germany.

Bringing the German factory on line has driven AMD's operating expenses up far higher than ever. Now, the company must sell more chips than it has ever sold, just to break even.

"The whole idea of the German factory is something that AMD should reconsider," Raza said, "no matter what the cost is of getting out of it."

Sanders disagrees. The German factory, he said, will have the advanced technology that AMD will need to hit high-performance targets in the future.

Just as it needs success with Athlon, AMD needs that factory, he said, to stay competitive with nemesis Intel. Despite the heavy spending required to stay in the game with Intel, Sanders acknowledges that his company must soon achieve consistent profits.

"Profitability is a great deodorant," Sanders said. "It makes criticism go away. We are going to make history."

Athlon vs Pentium III prijsvergelijking

The Athlon is approximately 13% more expensive than the Pentium 3 at 500Mhz, about 8% more expensive at 550Mhz, and 3% more expensive at 600Mhz.

Kryotech Cool Athlon 800 review

What can we say? The Kryotech Cool Athlon 800 the fastest system we've ever tested. It simply destroys Intel's fastest processor.

Some may argue that it's not fair comparing the 800MHz Athlon to the 600MHz Pentium III, but if a 800MHz Pentium III did exist, the Athlon 800 would still be a faster chip.

BeNews ECTS report

Quake III was running at the booth, alongside Quake II. At the moment it is very very beta. The frame-rate is quite bad and there is something wrong with the mouse. This is however no indication of how it will be when it is finished. The main thing is that it runs and that it is looking good. People were generally very impressed by the mere fact that it was running on BeOS already. Other then this there is really not much to say. If you want to know what it is like now, download it for Windows: it's the same .

Corum III is an RPG that currently is only available in Korea. At the booth we just had a rolling-demo with screenshots and some movieclips showing off gameplay, but once this game is actually release the only way to play it is by installing BeOS! The game has some deep Anime/Manga influences and looks quite nice.

Civilization Call to Power (picture) is of course the well known successor (well one of two actually) to Civilization II. It is a kind of empire building strategy game. You have unit roving the map to fight, discover new lands and build cities to increase your sphere of influence. The list of civilizations you can play is huge and includes just about every country the every set a foot across their own borders.

WASHINGTON -- With $500 and a trip to the hardware store, saboteurs can build a device capable of remotely disrupting computers, automobiles, medical equipment and nearly anything else dependant on electronics, according to a California engineer who demonstrated a homebrew computer death-ray at the InfowarCon '99 conference here Wednesday. [break]
[/break] The HERF gun is not particularly high-tech, either. The device uses technology dating back to Tesla, essentially pushing a 20 megawatt burst of undisciplined radio noise through an antenna. The energy is enough to interfere with sensitive computer components nearby, creating unpredictable results ranging from minor anomalous behavior, to complete burnout.

Schriner said he's built larger HERF guns capable of crashing computers and disabling automobiles at a range of 100 feet, with a cost as low as $300.

Super Duper Slot Fan review

The fan works by spinning and drawing the warm air into its brushless, rotating center. The air is then sent out the vent, that leads to the outside of the back of your case. Seems simple enough and it is. In fact, using some testing software for my ASUS motherboard, the fan lowered my internal case temperature by 5.5 degrees!! Wow!!

The Super Duper Slot Fan is perfect for placing under your V3 or TNT2 card, as it is sure to keep it cool and working at full potential. This fan also allows you to overclock your video card even more! It is quiet and comes with a lifetime warranty to boot. The SDSF also is a "self-cleaner" as it removes much of the dust in the system as well.

"by Hoyt, hduff2@worldnet.att.net . . . the newest distribution of Mandrake 6.0 from http://www.linuxmandrake.com [is] based on RedHat conventions. . . highly optimized and comes with a killer implementation of the KDE desktop. Hidden away, however, is a program called Lnx4win.exe. . . Many current MS- Windows owners have powerful computers with plenty of hard drive space, but are understandably confused about the repartitioning involved to install Linux on an ext2 partition. Next to ppp issues, partitioning seems to be the source of much frustration from new-to-Linux users. Lnx4win allows the new user to eliminate this hassle by installing Mandrake to an image file on a hard drive and creating a desktop shortcut that allows the user to boot from MS Windows to Mandrake. No muss. No fuss. No repartitioning necessary. This is not a umsdos file system, but a real ext2 file system inside an image file mounted using a loopback device. There is one drawback. . . You must have at least 64 Mb of ram to install Linux this way and. . . enough free hard drive real estate to accommodate the size you select for you installation. You also get an option to install a boot menu into the config.sys file. This option would not work for me when booting into Windows 98, just into DOS. I removed it and use a desktop link to boot to Lnx4win. The performance of Linux under the Lnx4win installations seems slower than an identical ext2 installation. . . but not significantly so. Lnx4win also uses a swap file rather than a swap partition While targeted at the new user. . . Lnx4win can also be useful to the dual-booting seasoned Linux veteran. Just make a minimal install of enough programs to recover from a crash and duplicate any config file in the Lnx4win version of Mandrake. Then just edit fstab to allow you to mount the regular ext2 partition and as long as the entire machine has not crashed, you have a convenient way to launch a repair kit to fix your primary installation. . . Soyo SY-6BA+ review

This is an excellent board for overclockers and non overclockers alike. The board is a dream to work with and was stable with all 3 out of 5 of our test DIMMs right up to 150Mhz. For the really hard-core overclocker who like to throw maximum voltage at a problem then the 10% voltage limit may be constraining but as our results show we achieved 100% stability with all our test CPUs. However the inclusion of L2 cache tweaking more than makes up for this, and many tweakers use this to extra a few more Mhz out of their CPU's, at the expense of L2 to main memory transfers.

Intel Celeron 433 review

The Celeron 433 was only overclockable to 488 MHz and it couldn’t even POST using the 83 MHz bus. However some people might have more luck but unfortunately, we didn’t with this CPU.

The price of the Celeron 433 is around 85-95$, which is a relatively low price and not much more expensive than the Celeron 366 and 400. However, there are rumours that new Celeron 366s have a high chance of reaching 550 MHz.

Athlon mobo shipping info

I just found out that FIC shipped 1700 SD11 boards on Tuesday to distributors and systems integrators. MSI and GVC boards are also supposedly shipping this week... [/break] Some news for you folks. We've been told to expect the FIC and GVC mainboards on Tuesday. We have them both on backorder. Microstar is expected mid week and Gigabyte the begining of the week after. FIC will be the least expensive at approx. $239. The others are priced at $289. Expect them all to drop too the $200 level by the end of the month when Asus and all the other guys come around. We can also announce the AMD K6-2 500 CPU will be arriving within the next 2 weeks with pricing at approx. $179. The K6-3 500 is expected in Q4 (Nov, Dec timeframe) and the Athlon 700 should make an appearance in October sometime. Also look to see the K6-2 and K6-3 move to a new manufacturing process which will allow for a 2.2 voltage instead of 2.4. Should help in heat reduction. That's about it for now.. keep checking back!

3dfx interview

Q: I'll make an assumption here and say that the Voodoo4/Napalm won't incorporate a geometry processor. The point being it won't help much in most games and huge fill-rates is more important. Another point is that game engines need to be coded for transform & lighting in the first place. Meaning there aren't any or isn't going to be many games that will have that and therefore an on-board geometry processor would be a waste. How do you respond to people that says, "But isn't this the same as when 3dfx said, with the Voodoo3, that 32-bit rendering is not important because not many games will have that color/texture depth?".

A: It is different. First of all, 32-bit rendering slows you down but doesn't cost much more in terms of chip area, while geometry processing tends to speed things up but does cost a lot more in terms of chip area and final product cost. Before the argument went something like this - 16-bit for speed versus 32-bit for quality. Now the argument will go like this - geometry engine for more triangles vs. anti-aliasing for quality pixels. These are two VERY different tradeoffs. I foresee another giant newsgroup battle. What people don't realize is that there is no "right" answer - it's a very subjective decision as to which is better for a game player. For existing games, we feel strongly that geometry acceleration doesn't provide as much value as anti-aliasing. For future games, it's a closer call, but more geometry without anti-aliasing is only going to increase the number of aliased pixels on the screen, which is not a good thing.

That is already great. And without Anti-Aliasing. I removed the teapot with 10x more polygons because some people said that it was already too much (although the GeForce and even maybe Savage2000 can increase a game from 10.000 polygons/scene to 100.000 polygons/scene)... but as you can see with only an increase of 5x the polygons in the teapot the results are already encouraging that we will enter in a new realism of games in the next month when T&L cards arrive.

I really want to say that I think that Anti-Aliasing is great and can eliminate some of the effects that many of us identify in the majority of computer generated images. But in low polygon count games, anti-aliasing don't have the same impact in image quality than an increase of polygon count in the game.

I am not saying that GeForce/Savage2000 are better than Voodoo4 or vice-versa. I haven't seen any of them What I am saying is "More Polygons" IS better .
