Ook nog een E3 artikel van Anand. O.a. de Voodoo3 - 3500TV, Creative Nomad, Matrox G400, AMD en Hercules komen aan de beurt. Check 't hier.
Matrox had a nice little demonstration of the G400’s dual head capabilities. In case you’re not familiar with dual head, Matrox had incorporated two monitor outputs on their upcoming G400 cards. This means you can use two regular CRT monitors at once so you’ll have double the windows desktop area. Each monitor can display at a different resolution and use different refresh rates. You can also use the second monitor to zoom in on a particular area of the first one. Still not impressed? Try hooking up a TV to play games on, or use the TV to play your DVD movies while you work in Windows on your primary display. You can also use two analog LCD displays or 1 digital LCD display and something else, using the two outputs. It's a slick feature, and arguably the G400's greatest advantage over its competitors.

It appears that some form of signal degradation is going on. It is worth noting that all the CPU's will run just fine at 464Mhz using 2.0v on any of the Slot1 boards. When higher bus speeds are used, stability goes through the floor. The combination of 112Mhz bus speed, and 370->Slot1 adapters definately seems to decrease stability. I can run benchmarks on the Elitegroup P6BXT-A+ and Abit ZM6 @ 504Mhz until the cows come home, but move the same CPU's onto an adapter board and instability results. I'll be looking at this further - in the meantime I'd be interested in getting your own feedback on this issue. Send me your results to me. I particularly interested in any results running on the Elitegroup P6BXT-A+ as this board, with its dual interface offers unique testing possibilities.
Goeie info -> check BXB.
At 184mm², the 0.25 micron K7 die is bigger than the PIII, and die size can hold a direct relationship with the pure speed of the CPU. Larger die chips require more power to run efficiently and power increases tend to increase heat which tends to decrease performance. The large die size presents a few logistical problems as well. Increased die size means fewer chips per wafer and lower yields that will no doubt result in initially higher cost to the consumer. Once the Dresden fab ramps up, the prices should drop as production increases. This should hopefully put the K7 into the mainstream buyers market before Christmas.
Now for the big question--how does the Force RS perform? In a nutshell, very well. Force feedback effects are strong and provide good feedback, especially in Viper Racing and Sports Car GT. The included I-Force studio allows the effects to be customized for I-Force compliant titles, though I didn't experiment with it much. Control is very precise, and centering is excellent--a complaint I've heard from many FF wheel owners is the lack of self-centering, but that isn't an issue with this product. With the updated drivers from ACT Labs' web site, the centering works in non-FF titles as well--a big plus for most sim racers, since many of the best simulations don't support FF. I tried the Force RS with Grand Prix Legends and NASCAR Racing 1999 Edition, neither of which have FF, and it was outstanding in both cases. The only titles it won't work with are those which run under DOS, as the Force RS is strictly a Win95/98 controller.
The very first thing I noticed when booting this up was the BIOS (being that it's the first thing you ever really see when booting, this makes perfect sense). Instead of the very popular Award BIOS that is so common amongst motherboard manufacturers for some God-awful reason, Tyan has opted to go with the MUCH nicer AMIBIOS. The main reason I like it better is it cuts the boot-time to nothing. It's just a hell of a lot faster. There's also the MUCH nicer menuing system. If I had my way, all motherboards would have AMIBIOS. Then again, if I had it my way, all motherboards would be Tyan's, but I'm getting ahead of myself now.
:
The question upon many gamers minds is whether the glasses will support a large number of games. Elsa picked the right API to make it compatible with, at the right time. Most games are written in Direct 3d flavor (or else given the option). This means that not only PC games are supported, but a large number of console emulators (Ultra HLE and Bleem! come to mind) are also supported, considering D3D is the acceleration of choice with the EMU developers. The real limitation when it comes to support of hardware is in the light that the Elsa 3d Revelator only works with Elsa boards. It's obvious why Elsa has chosen this way of going about it considering their new TNT 2 boards are just about to ship.

The Blade 3D Turbo has raised the performance of an entry-level graphics controller to a new standard. The most recent Mercury Research Benchmark Results Survey dated May 10th gave Trident's new Turbo a 516 3D WinBench 99, a 30% advantage over the Savage 3D. The new Turbo also scored a 186 on the 2D WinBench99, an edge higher than the Rage 128Turbo chip from ATI.[...]The advanced architecture adds the true color 32-bit rendering with per pixel complexity and 1/16th sub-pixel precision. The 4 Kbytes-texture cache provides over 90% hit rates and, along with multiple buffering and page flipping, further enhances the picture rendering performance. The Blade 3D-Turbo is Trident's Open GL compliant device with blending for fog and depth queuing.
The Creative Labs' DVD drive bundled in the Encore 6X Dxr3 is, as the name reveals, a 6X DVD-ROM drive. It has a buffer memory of 512kb and the random Access Time is at around 180ms for DVD media and 120ms for CD media. As it is a 6X DVD drive, transfer rates are exceptional, giving a maximum of 8.3mb/sec when using DVD, and a maximum of 3.6mb/sec (24X) using CD. The DVD drive can read 2-layered discs, giving a maximum storage of 8.5gb/side! This means, that with a 2-layer, 2-sided DVD disc, a storage capacity of 17Gb is supported!
Dark Viper (samen met o.a.
Unreal Tournament Deathmatch is the core mode of the game, here you start out with the DM Tutorial, a level for people who need assistance in learning how to get started in UT, or you can skip it and start the first match against Blake, an easier opponent in the ranks, who you will need to kill an x amount of times in order to go on to the next tournament match. Once you have defeated the first, you can move on to more matches as they become more difficult in both levels and opponents, with frag requirements increasing as you progress. Once you have completed all stages, you will unlock a secret player, who you can later use as your player model on the inernet.

By now I hope you've all read my article on System/V3 cooling & overclocking here on Voodoo3.net. If you did, you know I'm EXTREMELY power hungry.Well in an attempt to push my system a little further, I decided to try out a few more Voodoo3 3000's, looking for one that would OC higher than my current board. In the process, I stumbled upon some information that you'll all want to know about.
LithTech 2 supports exactly the same geometry capability as Quake 3 for indoor situations. Quake 3 does not support "true" curved surfaces either. It simulates curves with many polygons just like LithTech. It has to, because 3D cards currently only support the drawing of triangles. Quake 3 passes the card triangles just like Lithtech. All engines need to do it the same way on the PC for now!
Tommyboy is plotseling driemaal zolang geworden! Nog meer sorry van Tom. Jummie
:
When I made my editorial posting Saturday evening, I hoped that I could finally calm down the rough tides that arose from the Q3test-article, but the Saturday-posting was indeed not really the right way to achieve this whatsoever. I can see that the things I said on Saturday weren't exactly helpful. Due to the fact that I really don't have any desire to waste anymore time on that stupid issue that was generated by me as well, I will try now to rectify things once and for all. Now I will say it once more, once and for all, I have never been paid off for good reviews by anybody and I won't ever do that in the future as well. I never even had the slightest need to do anything like that. However, mails saying I was biased from several people and especially posts on other websites claiming that I've been paid off really hurt and upset me. This was wrong, I should never have bothered even reading or looking at this, but certainly I shouldn't have felt compelled to prove all of the time that TNT2 is indeed better. I also made comments against those polemic postings, this way pouring oil into the fire rather than calming things down. I simply tried to prove in any comment that I made and from every test that I did, that TNT2 simply deserves my credits over Voodoo3 and that this doesn't have the slightest thing to do with bias or even a pay-off. The result was that the fronts between the 'pro-NVIDIA' and the 'pro-3Dfx' people hardened and I made myself look as if I was the bad guy all over sudden. [break]Blabla...Q3Test disaster...blabla, Tom wil een staakt-het-vuren[/break] As a result I will take down any kind of flaming towards any individual or website. I promise here and now, that I will not ever react to any kind of 'anti-Tom' postings or emails anymore, I won't even bother taking the slightest offence to it. If people like to make nasty comments about my work, and me, if they try to make me look bad, biased or paid-off, then they will have to collect the material for it by themselves from now on. I won't make it easy for them by supplying any material for bad-mouthing me by myself anymore. I apologize to all my readers who feel that their time has been wasted by this stupid war-campaign, I apologize to Brian Hook for taking too much time until I finally got the message and I even apologize to all the websites who hate and despise me, for making nasty comments about them. I have neither got the time nor the slightest desire to go on fighting over a topic that most of you cannot even remember anymore, "is TNT2 indeed better than Voodoo3'.
I will from now on only focus on supplying you with the best and most thorough analysis of hardware components for PCs, just as I used to do in the good old days. I am old enough to be able to control my temper, and may the mails, news groups postings and websites be as ridiculous as they want, I won't get upset about it anymore.
Erg amusant allemaal
Wow, these amazed me. They have to be the best computer speakers I have used so far. Positional audio was great with the four-point surround mode, and the best thing about them is they support Dolby Digital. However there are some cons. Number 1, the subwoofer is very poor. Number 2, they still sound like computer speakers (Computer speakers often leave out a lot of the lower tones, giving them a half-rounded tone). These aren't that big of a deal being as they are computer speakers, but it just doesn't replace my home stereo system. What good is Dolby Digital if you can't hear a full, crisp sound?
In-game performance probably mattered most. Well, playing with a pair of headphones, Half-Life no doubt best brought out the powess of A3D 2.0. I could feel that positional audio was taken a notch higher - sounds of enemy fire were distinct enough to giveaway their positions. However, once I switched to quad speakers mode, the effects became a little hazier and after installing LiveWare 2.0 onto my SBLive! test system, positional audio had been much improved and distinct. No longer I see the advantages of wavetracing over EAX so clearly. (Check Page 3 of Alive's LiveWare 2.0 Review)
Unreal was another game I played on both cards. I was unable to discern any appreciable difference between the Vortex2 and Live!. Strolling about the infamous Nali Falls didn't disappoint on both cards. Performance was about on par with each other.
Als we The Register moeten geloven (waarom zouden we
A reliable source close to AMD's plans who attended the E3 show last week has confirmed that information we posted about the K7 chipsets is correct. At the same time he said that AMD was bang on the button for a June release and would come out with 500MHz, 550MHz and 600MHz versions at launch date.
System vendors, however, will be the first to get their hands on the parts, as AMD continues to ramp up its production during the rest of the year.

Mastering process of CD-R supports didn’t encounter any problem; at the speed of 4x all the copies have been carried successfully; the master allows to create copies in overburning and even with these there has been no problem. This is the same for rewritable supports too which had no problem even at 4x. The good writing performances are also due to the buffer of 2 Mbytes which allows to reduce the risks of buffer underrun. Working temperature during the master phase has always been low, clearly lower than that usually achieved with master at the same speed and this is the same for noise too.
Maxtor Corporation today announced the DiamondMax 6800 hard disk drive, the newest addition to its award-winning DiamondMax product line. With 6.8 GB of capacity per disk, the powerful new drive provides up to 27.2 gigabytes of high performance storage, the highest capacity in its class for today's video, audio, and Internet computing needs.Building on Maxtor's tradition of leadership products, the DiamondMax 6800 features a new dual-microprocessor controller for enhanced performance. The Maxtor DualWave(TM) processor uses the power of two high-speed processors, which improves drive and system performance through a 90% reduction in drive command overhead.
[...]The DiamondMax 6800 features an average seek time of 9 ms, a 2 MB buffer, and the UltraDMA 66 interface.
In my opinion, the biggest improvement in graphics over the older Quake games is the consistency of the environment. Quake was far too dark for my taste, but Quake II went a little crazy sometimes with the colored lighting. Quake was just too brown, while Quake II ended up looking like a cartoon at times (not necessarily a bad thing). Epic’s Unreal was beautiful, but the ability to select independent 256 color palettes per texture was abused in many areas too. In Quake3, id left behind the 8 bit textures of Quake II, and went for full 24 bit source art. The result is a new hybrid metal medieval look. The artists and level designers at id did a good job of making each map look consistent. The weapons and weapon fire are the only things that really introduce bright colors into the levels. I believe that id said that they did it intentionally as a design decision for accessibility to newbies. The darker atmosphere and deeper contrasts within the maps does tend to make the player models harder to see. Kenneth Scott, who has an absolutely amazing skinning style, uses a lot of shading on his skins. Combined with the new lighting, player models can be difficult to make out, especially with all the other graphical effects going. It would be nice if id implemented a gl_modulate type command to brighten things up a bit in the final version. There is a fullbright command in the test, but it is protected under id's new anti cheating scheme.
You now can play Glide games on Creative TNT cards with the Creative Unified Driver. But this driver does also work on other TNT (2) cards. In the following some Wing Commander Secret Operations screenshots in Glide mode. They were made with an ASUS V3800 Deluxe TNT2 ULTRA with NVIDIA drivers v1.81:

Number Nine SR9 [break]Van de TNT2 kaarten is de Hercules Dynamite TNT2 Ultra duidelijk het snelst en best overklokbaar:[/break] As I mentioned before Hercules seems to be aiming at the power user. The default clockspeed of this card has been set at a whopping 175/210 MHz and mine could be clocked up to 180/220. And yes, you have seen it right, the huge cooler covering the TNT2 Ultra chip is indeed one of them ultra powerful Lasagna coolers from TennMax. As far as I know Hercules is the first company to ship their cards with this cooler, and it's a good choice, well worth the extra few bucks..... Apart form the ultra high-speed this card also has TV out.... The Hercules Dynamite TNT2 Ultra is clearly the best choice for the performance hungry gamer.
This article is intended for two audiences: Those who have not been able to play q3test (like Bigdog) and those who have played, but are looking for a summary of what's new and may not have noticed some of these things. Please email either Mobius Trip or Nechaboi if you notice any cool new details that we missed. I have to say that he has lived up to his words because the details are amazing! Clicking on a screenshot will open it in a new window. From then on all screenshots will open in that window, so make sure you check it when you click on a new screenshot link.
:
Regardless of their reasons for missing the show, after seeing some incredible video footage of Payne in action, we must confess that they can take all the time they need. Imagine a cross between a hyped-up John Woo flick and the box office smash The Matrix, and you begin to get a sense of what they have created. The game's engine enables Remedy to do some amazing things with the in-game action, as it can change the speed of the game for emphasis (such as a slow-mo gun fight or cut scene). Bullets whiz by in slow motion, gunmen stand face to face in a classic stand-off and Max performs standing backflips and launches head-first into a volley of shots at his next target. There are several sequences where Max dives while filling his enemies full of lead as he tumbles through a hallway or past a group of concrete supports to nail the bad guys square in the chest. He also performs a variety of back flips and dives, which stunned the E3 crowd, which could do little but cheer in utter amazement at what looks more like a high-budget action film than a game.
The frightening thing is, we're actually going to get to play this thing. Currently slated for some time next year, Max Payne is well on its way to redefining the action genre as we know it. We'll be back with a full report in the near future, so be sure to keep you eyes glued to IGNDC for the full scoop.
Errug handige info.
